ios: carry #123's capture modules into HouseScanKit and fix their result, consent, retry, redirect and folder-ownership handling - #192
Conversation
…eScanKit Copied unchanged from PR #123 (t3/hunter-integration) at 17b53ba, written there in 02c1e92..cd10f55. Only HouseScanKit library code and its tests come across: the packet 0.4 producer and checks, the capture-API uploader with its saved state and send gate, the session coordinator, and the device-result decoder with its AR gate. The one change to an existing file is the `shift` argument #123 added to the makeJPEG test helper. Nothing calls these modules yet. ScanEngine, the app's UI and the ordinary upload to /v1/placements are untouched, so the shipped app behaves exactly as before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The capture API can say a run is finished before its answer is readable. It answers a result read 200 with the capture's status and a null outcome until the run writes its answer, and 404 result_not_ready when the run reads as done before the answer is stored. The uploader took the first as the final result whenever the status already looked terminal, and failed the capture for good on the second. A result read is now final only when it has an outcome, or when its status is failed or expired, which can end a capture with no answer. A not-ready read is retried with the uploader's usual backoff, at most maxNotReadyResults times (10, about three minutes), and then the upload ends as failed(result, result_not_ready). No measurement sets that bound; it only keeps an answer that never appears from holding the upload open. A 200 that is not JSON now fails as result_unreadable instead of being kept as the answer. The loopback API gains faults for each case, and five tests cover them. The two not-ready tests failed against the carried #123 code before this change. Remove the private capture contract from tracked source
When this commit lands in the public repository, this constant exposes a server-derived internal tolerance; the added result and API types likewise publish output and prompt field names. Repository policy explicitly requires these materials to remain under ignored private/, so the contract-derived interfaces and values must not be committed here.

Not changed. The AGENTS.md rule cited here covers Base's materials. This constant and the result and API field names are copied byte for byte from #123 at 17b53baa, which is already public in this repository. Whether the capture API's contract values belong in public code at all is still an open decision for Sam and the server's owner, and I've raised it with them. I'm leaving this thread open until they decide.

Validate the full result before ending the upload
When the API returns valid JSON with a non-null but malformed outcome—for example {} or a scalar—decoding ResultHead succeeds because Present accepts any JSON value, so the uploader saves the body and permanently marks itself finished. CaptureSessionCoordinator.bindResult then fails to decode CaptureResult.Response and only logs the error, leaving the UI with a finished upload but no result and no retry path. Decode the full response, or otherwise validate the outcome shape, before setting state.end.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 63b3295. The result read now decodes the whole CaptureResult.Response before it finishes the upload, and a body that doesn't decode ends it as result_unreadable. aMalformedOutcomeStopsTheUpload sends an outcome with only a kind. Before the fix the upload ended finished with that body saved; now it ends failed(result, result_unreadable) with nothing saved.

Represent terminal failures as settled results
When the server finishes a capture with failed or expired, the uploader intentionally accepts a response with no outcome as final, but this initializer classifies every nil-outcome response as .working. A valid terminal failure therefore reaches consumers looking indistinguishable from an in-progress capture and can leave the result experience showing a working state indefinitely; handle these terminal statuses separately instead of deriving the state solely from outcome presence.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Valid, not changed here. A failed or expired capture with no outcome becomes .working(.failed) or .working(.expired), so the status is kept, but the case name is misleading. Nothing in the app builds this summary yet. Splitting out a terminal case changes a public enum that the result screen will switch on, so it belongs with the change that wires that screen. Leaving this open as a follow-up.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 9e0db8e, now on this PR at 997f266. CaptureResultSummary.State has a new .ended(Status) case, used when a result has no outcome and its status is failed or expired. Other outcome-less statuses stay .working. The parameterized test aCaptureThatEndedWithoutAnOutcomeIsNotWorking (failed, expired) failed at 89eec02 and passes now. Nothing in the app reads the summary yet.

Persist the not-ready retry count across relaunches
When the app is terminated while polling a terminal capture whose result remains unavailable, resume restores CaptureUploadState but this actor-only counter starts again at zero. Repeated relaunches can consequently exceed maxNotReadyResults indefinitely, defeating the stated bound that prevents a missing answer from holding the upload open; store the count in the persisted capture state and restore it with the rest of the attempt.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Valid, not changed. The budget is per process: a relaunch starts a new uploader and gets up to maxNotReadyResults more reads, about three minutes. Nothing loops on its own across launches, because each new budget needs a relaunch. Making the budget last for the whole capture means adding a field to the saved upload state, and that should land with the other saved-state changes the uploader needs. Leaving this open.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in a8c4fb3 and aac6c90, now on this PR at 997f266.
- The count is saved as
CaptureUploadState.notReadyReads, so a relaunch continues the same limit: 10 retries, at most 11 reads. theNotReadyLimitSurvivesARelaunchstops the first process during its second wait and resumes, and the reads still stop atmaxNotReadyResults + 1. At 89eec02 they reached 6 instead of 4.- When the server loses the capture and the uploader opens it again, the count resets, because that is a new run.
aRecreatedCaptureStartsANewNotReadyLimitfailed at a8c4fb3 and passes now.

Allow replay captures to finish without live IMU
When CaptureIntegrationMode enables a replay upload to a local receiver, the runtime deliberately does not start Core Motion because there is no live camera, so the recording supplies empty accelerometer and gyroscope rows. Passing those rows unconditionally to Packet04Producer.finish makes Packet04Streams.imuRaw throw streamEmpty, after which the coordinator abandons the upload as a refused packet; consequently the explicitly supported replay/Simulator integration path can never produce a capture.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Not reachable in this PR: nothing here wires replay or Simulator capture to the coordinator, and the app does not call it at all. The mechanism is right, though. Empty motion rows make Packet04Streams.imuRaw throw streamEmpty, and the coordinator abandons the packet. The ARKit tiers require raw IMU, so the fix is for a replay adapter to supply the recorded motion, not to relax the check or invent samples. That belongs with the replay wiring. Leaving this open.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Decided: replay without motion stays local-only and can't be sent, which is today's behavior. Replay sessions (measure-lab-session v2) record frames and poses but no motion. The ARKit tiers require raw IMU (Packet04Streams.swift:72,86), so captureEnded refuses such a packet with "packet refused on the phone" (CaptureSessionCoordinator.swift). There will be no invented IMU samples, no relaxed check and no new tier. This is a recorded decision, not an open question.
The failed event the loopback API emits for a capture that ends `failed` carried a made-up code that read like a real server code. It is now `loopback_run_failed`, so nobody mistakes it for part of the capture API. The uploader ignores this code; only the status matters to the test. …eadable results are handled Three defects review found in the capture library, each with a test that failed before this change: - A no after a yes kept sending. `answerConsent(false)` changed the recorded answer but left the uploader running, so photos kept afterwards were uploaded and the packet was finalized. The uploader is now abandoned as "consent withdrawn", and a second yes in the same scan does not restart it. What the server already received stays there. - A reset left staged photo copies on disk. `kept` copies each JPEG into `Captures/staging` and deleted it only inside the queued work, which a reset skips. The deletion now runs whether or not the work runs. - A result whose outcome was present but malformed finished the upload with an answer nothing could read. The result read now decodes the whole `CaptureResult.Response`, and a body that doesn't decode ends the upload as `result_unreadable`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…unch can't resume the capture Review of 63b3295 found that withdrawal lived only in memory until the uploader's asynchronous abandon saved its end. If the app quit in that window with a sealed capture, a relaunch's resumeSealedCaptures would find the saved yes and send the remaining files. answerConsent(false) now writes a `consent-withdrawn` marker into the capture's folder before it returns, and resumeSealedCaptures skips any folder that has one. The new test seals a capture while its finalize is held, withdraws, and relaunches in the same main-actor turn. Before this change that relaunch resumed the capture. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… failed marker write removes the saved upload Review of 7ec7770 found two ways a withdrawn capture could still be sent: - Only the coordinator checked the withdrawal marker. Calling CaptureUploader.resume directly would resume the capture before the asynchronous abandon had saved its end. The check now lives in CaptureUploader.resume, which the coordinator's relaunch path also uses, and the marker's name moves to CaptureUploadState. - If the marker couldn't be written, for example on a full disk, withdrawal was only logged. The coordinator now removes the saved upload state instead; resume needs that file, so nothing is resumed. The relaunch test now also calls CaptureUploader.resume directly, and a new test blocks the marker's path so the write fails. Both failed against 7ec7770. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… also takes After a no, a reply already in flight could still save the upload as active before the asynchronous abandon ran. When the withdrawal marker couldn't be written, that save recreated the state file a relaunch resumes, and in every case the loop went on to send the next request. CaptureUploader now owns a Mutex<Bool>. withdrawConsent(), synchronous and nonisolated, sets it and, under the same lock, writes the consent-withdrawn marker or, if that fails, removes the saved state. persist() saves while holding the lock, and once withdrawn it saves the upload as abandoned with a new attempt id. Whichever runs first, no save after the withdrawal can leave a resumable capture. Every API request and every batch of PUTs checks the flag before it is sent, so nothing new goes out after withdrawConsent returns. A request already on the wire finishes, and its reply can only save the upload as abandoned. The coordinator calls withdrawConsent() before it schedules abandon. aReplyAfterWithdrawalCannotSaveAResumableCapture holds the register reply, withdraws, and keeps the main actor busy so the abandon task cannot run, then releases the reply. It runs with the marker written and with it blocked. Against bc7d868, both cases saved an active upload and then uploaded the photo. It replaces the fallback test, which checked only that the file was deleted. The same-turn assertion that the saved end was still nil is gone, because a gated save may now record the abandon first. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…an't end the upload as finished Review of the withdrawal lock (9d6665f) found three remaining gaps, fixed here: - A request past its admission check, or a queued PUT child, could still start after withdrawConsent returned. withdrawConsent now cancels the running loop task synchronously. The task is kept in a Mutex so no actor hop is needed, and cancelling it cancels the requests and PUT children it hasn't finished. Each PUT child also checks the flag just before it starts, and kick() won't start a loop once consent is withdrawn. - A late result or refusal set .finished or .failed before saving, and the save kept it. Once consent is withdrawn, persist() now always saves the upload as abandoned. - withdrawConsent returns how the withdrawal was recorded: marked, saved state removed, or neither. The coordinator logs the last case instead of claiming the removal worked. A missing state file counts as removed. Two new tests failed against 9d6665f. aResultAfterWithdrawalSavesTheUploadAsAbandoned holds a result, withdraws and releases it. withdrawalCancelsTheRequestInFlight holds a register request and shows that the uploader gives it up while the main actor stays busy. The reply-save witness now uses a transport whose replies outlive cancellation, as a background session's do, and it waits until the response is parked before releasing it. The relaunch test waits for the abandon task instead of the loop. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

… blocking directory CodeRabbit (review 5387568688) noted that when the test blocks the withdrawal marker, the directory it leaves at the marker's path makes resume refuse by itself. The test now removes that directory first and checks resumeSealedCaptures(), which refuses a saved upload that already has an end, so only the abandoned save can stop the resume. The direct CaptureUploader.resume check stays for the case where the marker was written. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

…d, not working CaptureResultSummary turned every result without an outcome into .working(status), so a capture that had failed or expired looked as though it were still running. The new .ended(status) case covers those two statuses. Nothing in the app reads the summary yet. aCaptureThatEndedWithoutAnOutcomeIsNotWorking failed for both statuses at 89eec02. …r never takes, saves its not-ready count, and paces empty polls Four review findings on #192, each with a test that failed at 89eec02: - Storage URLs (CodeRabbit 4158007398, Greptile 4115041167 on #123). A register answer's PUT URL must now be https, or http to this machine. Otherwise registration fails as upload_url_insecure, or as upload_url_invalid when the URL doesn't parse. Before, an unparseable URL left the file registered and the loop spinning, and a public http URL was used as given. A saved URL that fails the check goes back to register. - Files the server never takes (CodeRabbit 4158007439). A file left out of a register answer, or not acknowledged by a commit, was queued again with no delay and no limit. Each file now counts these in `unacknowledged`. Each time waits the retry delay, and the upload stops as not_acknowledged after maxUnacknowledged (5). - Not-ready reads across relaunch (Codex 4152312613). The count is saved in CaptureUploadState.notReadyReads, so a relaunch continues the same limit instead of starting over. - Empty polls answered at once (Greptile 4159739264). An events answer that comes back with nothing new while the capture is still running, sooner than minimumPollInterval (2 s), now waits out the rest before the next poll. The new state fields are optional, so state saved by earlier builds still loads. No measurement sets the 5-try limit or the 2 s interval. The uploader's new tests wait for it to go idle with a deadline, so a loop that never stops fails the test instead of hanging the run. The HouseScanKit package passes 681/681 locally. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ll-pacing test uses a controlled clock Review of a8c4fb3 found that when the server lost a capture and the uploader opened it again, the new run kept the old run's saved not-ready count. With a limit of 3, an old count of 3 ended the new run on its first not-ready read. captureGone now resets notReadyReads and every file's unacknowledged count, because a new server capture is a new run. Relaunches of the same capture still keep both counts. aRecreatedCaptureStartsANewNotReadyLimit failed at a8c4fb3: the recreated run ended failed instead of finished. The pacing test now moves its clock only when the uploader sleeps, and it checks three waits of exactly the 2 s interval plus a terminal fetch with no wait. A new test checks that an answer held longer than the interval gets no extra wait. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
…st goes only to the URL that was checked URLSessionCaptureHTTP used an ordinary URLSession with no delegate. A URLSession follows HTTP redirects by default, and the uploader checks only the storage URL the server first gives. So a 307 or 308 from storage would have carried the photo to a URL nobody checked. App Transport Security would still block cleartext to public hosts. But it allows any https host, and the app's NSAllowsLocalNetworking permits plain http on the local network. Both send and upload now pass a task delegate, NoRedirects, that refuses every redirect. URLSession then returns the 3xx response itself, so callers classify it like any other refusal: a redirected PUT counts as a storage refusal, and a redirected API request fails on its status. The CaptureHTTP protocol now says implementations must not follow redirects. Two tests drive the real URLSession against two local loopback servers. aStorageRedirectIsNotFollowed redirects every photo PUT, and anAPIRedirectIsNotFollowed redirects create. Both failed at aac6c90: the second server received the redirected request. The maxUnacknowledged comment now says what the tests pin: 5 retries, with the upload stopping on the 6th unacknowledged answer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>

Packet04Check compared a tap's submitted ray with its replay by zipping the two origin+direction lists and taking the largest difference. zip stops at the shorter list, and max() can skip a NaN. So an empty direction, a 2+4 split of the same six numbers, an extra component or a NaN all passed the check that claims to validate tap replay. The producer isn't known to emit such rays; the check simply didn't catch them. The check now requires exactly three finite values in each of rayOrigin and rayDirection before it compares, and reports "tap <id> ray is not two finite 3-vectors". The replay tolerance is unchanged. aTapRayThatIsNotTwoFinite3VectorsIsRefused covers five mutations of a real producer packet. Four of them passed the check at 997f266. The infinite origin was already refused through its infinite error and stays as a guard. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Keep one live uploader per canonical folder and serialize ownership, saves, and withdrawal. Refuse reuse after withdrawal even when both persistence operations fail, and return that failure to the coordinator caller. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com> (cherry picked from commit 86a2633d34d5a987bf1e4d74eb2ff4c64ca2a933)
CI builds the package tests with -warnings-as-errors (ios.yml:137). Swift 6.3 warns when a weak var is never reassigned, so hosted run 37050869900 failed to compile ff8c0ed's tests at nine such declarations: the ownership, coordinator and uploader tests that check an uploader or session is released. Local runs passed because they didn't use the flag. The nine become weak let, which Swift has accepted since 6.2. Each is only read, to check that the object was released, so the tests mean the same. No source code changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>

The recorder gains a frameIntrinsics stream, rows [t, fx, fy, cx, cy, width, height]: ARKit's camera.intrinsics in the unrotated sensor image's pixels and imageResolution, as reported, built by HouseScanKit's FrameCalibrationRow. recordPose now writes it at the one LiveCapture call site, from the same ARFrame and at the same t as the trajectory row, under one lock so recording toggled between them can't keep one without the other. It uses the recorder's existing storage, restart and recording-off path like every stream. Photo processing's recording source forwards these rows instead of [] to Packet04Streams.poseRows, which joins them by exact t and omits a pose without its own row. The 1.1 packet doesn't get the stream: writeMotion now takes each stream's 1.1 destination from Stream.motionPacketStream, nil for the trajectory and for frame intrinsics, and PacketStream has no case for it. No 1.1 or 0.4 wire field or schema changed. No keyframe or depth calibration is borrowed and no clock is rebased. Gates, camera activation, sending, Share, the meter tap and #192's files are unchanged. Comments and the README no longer say live intrinsics are missing; they aren't checked on a phone yet. Tests: FrameCalibrationRowTests (HouseScanKit) check the row's values and units, that frames whose calibration and resolution change independently each join their own row through poseRows, and that a missing row or one off by one ulp omits the pose. There is no app unit test target, so the recorder's own behaviour and the 1.1 exclusion are not tested here. Validated: nothing ran. leased-admit refused the package tests: "heavy lease refused for run frame-intrinsics: refused: count limit 1 reached ; nothing started" (exit 75). Not retried. The app wasn't built. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Until now the app never called meterTapped, so a live photo-processing packet had no meter tap. When the homeowner's mark is accepted (raycast, MeterTap.refusal and setWall all passed), the engine reads ARKit's current frame once, in that same main-actor turn, and takes its time, raw pose, intrinsics, image size, tracking and image from it (LiveCapture.meterTapSnapshot). HouseScanKit's MeterTapFrame projects the raycast's hit through that frame's own camera (TapObservation.pointing). Tracking that isn't normal, or a hit behind the camera or outside the image, gives no tap. The image is encoded off the main actor with the walk's existing encoder, now internal, and the tap is forwarded only with its JPEG already in hand. Legacy scans, replays and the synthetic capture take no snapshot; LiveMode and the walk's encoding are unchanged. PhotoProcessingController keeps each packet's tap (none, forwarded, failed). It resets with every packet and is fenced on the ScanContext captured at the mark, so a result after a world reset or Start over is dropped and logged. A failed tap ends the packet as not prepared at once after a yes; before an answer it is kept and a later yes ends it the same way; a no or a withdrawal keeps its own end. A live send waits for the tap and seals the capture only once it was forwarded. No wire field, gate, endpoint, Share path or #192/aa72 file changed. Tests (HouseScanKit): MeterTapFrameTests, MeterTapControllerTests, and the two existing PhotoProcessingTests call sites updated to pass the scan context. Validated: see the slice report; this commit is what the wrapper jobs build. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Stacked on #191 (
codex/public-assembly-20260930). This PR adds library code and tests only. ScanEngine, the app's screens, project.ymland CI are unchanged, and nothing in the app calls the new modules yet. What changed
#123's capture modules come into HouseScanKit, unchanged
ec5ad932copies 13 HouseScanKit source files and 6 test files from #123 at17b53baa, byte for byte. They are the packet 0.4 producer and its checks, the capture-API uploader with its saved state and send gate, the session coordinator, and the device-result decoder with its AR gate. The only edit to an existing file is theshiftargument #123 added to themakeJPEGtest helper.#123 also rewires
ScanEngineand the result screens, and those parts conflict with the current candidate. Keeping only the self-contained library code lets the capture contract be tested and fixed on today's base while the app wiring waits for its owners.A capture result counts only once it carries the run's answer
The capture API can report a run as finished before its answer is readable. Until the answer is written, a result read returns 200 with the capture's status and a null
outcome, or 404result_not_readywhen the run reads as done before its answer is stored. The uploader treated the first as the final result whenever the status already looked terminal, and the homeowner would have been shown an answer with no outcome. It treated the second as a permanent refusal and failed the capture. In
0848c43e, a result read is final only when it has an outcome, or when its status isfailedorexpired, since those can end a capture without an answer (CaptureUploader.fetchResult). A not-ready read is retried with the uploader's existing backoff. AftermaxNotReadyResultsretries (10, so 11 reads over about three minutes) the upload ends asfailed(result, result_not_ready). A 200 whose body is not JSON now fails asresult_unreadableinstead of being kept as the answer.A no after a yes stops the upload, including after a relaunch
Review found that
answerConsent(false)after a yes changed the recorded answer but left the uploader running, so photos kept afterwards were still uploaded and the packet was finalized. In63b32956, a no after a yes abandons the uploader, and a second yes in the same scan does not restart it. Abandoning happens asynchronously, soanswerConsent(false)first writes aconsent-withdrawnmarker into the capture's folder (7ec7770f).CaptureUploader.resumerefuses any folder that has the marker (bc7d8686).A reply already in flight could still save the upload as active before the abandon ran. Withdrawal now goes through a lock that every upload save also takes (
9d6665f9,37e86403):CaptureUploader.withdrawConsent()runs synchronously. Under the lock it writes the marker, or removes the saved state if it can't, and reports which happened..finishedor.failed.A relaunch therefore can't resume a withdrawn capture from this uploader. Anything the server received before the no stays there.
That still left a second uploader working the same folder: for example,
resumeSealedCaptures()called while the live scan's uploader was still sending. Its own lock didn't see the withdrawal, so it kept going. Inff8c0ed7(cherry-picked from86a2633d), each canonical capture folder has one live owner per process. Acquiring the folder, saving, withdrawing and starting the loop go through one registry, so a withdrawal stops every sender for that folder in this process. A withdrawn folder can't be reused, even when both the marker write and the state removal fail. In that caseanswerConsent(false)returns a typedConsentWithdrawalError.notRecorded, so the caller learns that nothing was saved instead of reading it in a log. A request that was already sent and can't be cancelled may still finish; no later batch or commit is admitted. The packet check refuses a misshaped tap ray
Packet04Checkcompared a tap's ray with its replay by zipping the two origin-plus-direction lists, which stops at the shorter one. An empty direction, a 2+4 split, an extra component or a NaN all passed. Inf5422be8, the check requires two finite 3-vectors before it compares.Staged photo copies and unreadable results
Also in
63b32956:keptcopies each photo intoCaptures/stagingand deleted the copy only inside the queued work, which a reset skips. The deletion now runs whether or not the work does.CaptureResult.Responsebefore it finishes the upload. An outcome missing required fields ends the upload asresult_unreadableinstead of being saved as an answer nothing can show. The uploader checks where photos go, bounds its retries and paces its polls
Five review findings on the uploader, fixed in
9e0db8eb,a8c4fb30,aac6c909and997f266d:URLSessionfollows redirects by default, so checking the first URL wasn't enough.URLSessionCaptureHTTPnow refuses every redirect, for photo uploads and API requests alike, and a 3xx comes back as its own reply and fails like any refusal.not_acknowledgedon the 6th unacknowledged answer..endedinCaptureResultSummaryrather than.working.No measurement sets the 5-retry limit or the 2 s interval; they only bound loops.
Why
Whether Hunter's server joins the app is still open. If it does, these modules are the client half. Carrying them onto the current candidate and fixing the result step means the next slice, follow-up photos for a
needs_viewsresult, can build on code that passes against today's base. The bound of 10 reads is not based on a measurement. Nobody has measured how long a finished run takes to make its answer readable. The limit only stops an answer that never appears from holding the upload open.
