packet: point to the server's capture packet 0.4 and propose 0.5 additions - #22
Conversation
The contract between the iPhone app and the server team: one scan session as manifest.json, full-resolution photos and sensor files, everything in the meter frame, in meters and device-uptime seconds. `python -m packet validate` checks the schema, file sizes and hashes, rigid poses, intrinsics against each image, time order, depth alignment, stream layout, the mesh and consent. Builders write samples from the app's own export, ADVIO and ETH3D to ~/house-scanning-data/packets/; only a synthetic fixture is committed. Five proposed changes to the packet, from the on-device 3D map in #21. Each is an addition a 1.0 reader can ignore, so together they fit in a minor version (1.1). #21 already reads the packet's conventions: the meter frame with 1. 2. 3.
4. Mesh classification: record whether it was on. 5. Optional depth between photos. 🤖 Generated with Claude Code |
…nes, mesh classification flag From S6's proposals on #22. All additive: a 1.0 packet still validates, and the two new requirements (confidence for ARKit depth, the flag with a mesh) apply only to packets that say 1.1. lidar.planes stays readable but deprecated. The validator checks sigma, depth frames against the trajectory and their own grid, plane boundaries inside their extent, and class 0 everywhere when classification was off. Reply to #22 (comment) Thanks. All five are in packet 1.1 (642a269). Two are stricter than proposed and one takes the other form you offered. It's additive: a 1.0 packet still validates, and the two new requirements apply only to packets that say 1.1.
The fixture now has one ARKit depth frame with confidence, one 🤖 Generated with Claude Code |

Review of d5439cf against main 1dcb0db. The local suite passes all 68 tests, lint and formatting, and the synthetic fixture validates. The inline findings below were checked against the source; the malformed-packet and filesystem cases were reproduced on disposable fixture copies. S4 remains the writer. This is not a merge-ready recommendation.

Caretaker handoff at d5439cf: the independent findings are in review #22 (review) . CodeRabbit completed review 5328211723 on this head, and each bot thread now has a checked disposition. Do not apply the ADVIO filename or accelerometer suggestions: the available archive contradicts them. Its location-column reorder is still needed. The remaining acceptance work also includes:
Evidence: 68 tests pass, Ruff lint/format pass, the committed synthetic fixture and all three existing external sample packets validate. The tracked JPEGs are generated drawings. No packet code was changed by the caretaker. The nine inline findings and remaining accepted bot findings still need writer fixes or an accepted reason before this is merge-ready. The generic docstring-coverage warning is not a correctness blocker; do not add comments that merely restate the code. |
The team adopted the server's capture packet spec 0.4 and its intake API as the single upload contract. This folder no longer defines a format: the 1.1 schema, validator, sample builders, fixture and tests are removed (still readable at d5439cf). What remains is the app side's proposals for 0.5 and three arrival checks offered for the server's validator. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

The server's repository is private, so validator-checks.md no longer names its internal files. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

The retired implementation findings are moot after the contract decision and removals. This review covers the two replacement documents. These remaining issues concern proposal status, evidence limits and the stated validation invariants; no private spec content is quoted here.

Carry uncertainty for the meter orientation
The proposal records only a categorical normalSource, although the cited measurements show that even one source has enough yaw spread to move a point by about a foot at 10 ft. Without a per-capture angular uncertainty or fit residual, the solver cannot propagate an error bar into along-wall distances and may turn a borderline placement into an unsupported pass; include the measured uncertainty alongside the transform.

Deferred, not a blocker for this proposal-only PR. A normal-source label is not evidence of accuracy, but no implemented solver here treats it as one. Per-capture angular uncertainty/fit residual would need an estimator and evidence that its values are useful; inventing a sigma from the cited proxy study would be worse. S4 should state that source is provenance, not a confidence bound, and leave a measured uncertainty field for a separate agreed proposal.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Deferred, as the caretaker verified: normalSource is provenance, not an error bound. 3792a8f adds that a per-capture yaw uncertainty is worth adding once a device study measures it, rather than inventing one now.
…the checks' limits From #22's review and Codex review: the eleven items are proposals, not contract; #59's numbers name their proxy, dataset and simulation; the retired sharpness and consent fields are not claimed to be covered; window operability is evidence for the rules; the boundary frame goes in a new field. In the proposed checks: positions only (not rotation), shape not alignment for depth, non-negative indices and finite vertices for the mesh, finiteness of every parsed number. The pointer no longer lists the intake routes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Hazards: a huge JSON integer parses as an int, and math.isfinite raises on it; check integers against their field's range and report failures as problems. - Proposal 10: each anchor-pose sample needs its timestamp and epoch. - Proposal 11: the #59 result assumes a still second phone at a known place; the proposal requires that, a time per range and the range's uncertainty. …t file E2E-criteria-on-recon.md) (#22)
What changed
The team adopted the server team's capture packet spec,
formatVersion0.4, and its intake API as the single upload contract. That spec isdocs/capture-packet-spec.mdin the private repositoryhuntertcarver/house-scanning-server. This PR no longer defines a packet format. It addspacket/with two documents:packet/README.mdpoints to the server spec and lists eleven proposals for 0.5, each with its reason. They are unapproved: none is part of the current contract until its owners adopt it. They cover what the app records at capture time that 0.4 has no field for:Nothing from the server's private spec, schema or code is copied into this public repository.
packet/validator-checks.mdproposes three arrival checks for the server's validator: keyframes lie on the pose stream, depth has its keyframe's shape, and the mesh file matches its declared layout. Each states what it cannot catch. It also lists six hazards that packet: point to the server's capture packet 0.4 and propose 0.5 additions #22's review found in the old validator and that apply to any packet validator. Whether the checks reach the server as a PR is Sam's and Hunter's call. Why
Packet 1.1, which this PR used to define, put everything in the meter frame. The server builds its reconstruction from raw ARKit world poses with epochs, tap rays, per-frame intrinsics and raw IMU, which 1.1 could not carry. An adapter between the two could not supply those either. The app already records world-frame poses before converting them, so writing 0.4 mostly means dropping that conversion. The comparison behind the decision was shared with the team separately.
The 1.1 schema, validator, sample builders, fixture and tests are removed. They remain readable at d5439cf, which the app's source comments cite. Nothing else in the repository depends on them: the app vendors its own copy of the schema.
Verification
main,t3/ios-mvf,t3/ios-map3d,t3/reconandt3/verificationfor uses of the removed files. None is an executable, build or CI dependency. Some text still refers to them: the app's source comments (pinned to d5439cf and d82a903),ios/README.mdon both app branches, and map3d's recorded-hash check of the vendored schema. The optional live-schema comparison that fetchedt3/packetwas removed from map3d in de04c3b. The packet caretaker is routing those docs to their owners.validator-checks.md; the rest are moot with the code removed.Checklist
