fix(tools): recover viewer reads and reconcile review documentation - #238
Conversation
Keep pending results pending, reject retired statuses and unidentified results, and read terminal outcomes independently of event-poll failures. Honor preview backpressure and reread results when their advertised preview disappears. Long polls now drop at the synthetic outage boundary. #124 (comment) #124 (comment) #124 (comment) #124 (comment) #124 (comment) #124 (comment) #124 (comment)
Correct the shortened request example, conditional existing-battery check and reconstruction pair-error figures. Reconcile the app-review summaries with their own source descriptions and recorded audit coverage. #134 (comment) #134 (comment) #134 (comment) #134 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment) #61 (comment)
Run the viewer suite from make check, refuse stale meter lockfiles, and check Measure Lab's generated project before its tests and build. Add scoped stub regressions for these root targets without invoking Xcode or dependencies. #124 (comment) #181 (comment) #181 (comment)

Cover all 64 suite combinations, exact command order, missing suites and failure propagation for project generation, tracked/untracked drift, locked meter sync and viewer tests. A failed git ls-files now fails the Makefile instead of looking like an empty generated-file list. #238 (comment)
Parse HTTP-date Retry-After values and keep contact backoff when a preview requires a fresh result. The controlled outage test now asserts the 100 ms boundary wake and rejects a mutation that instead sleeps until the next event. #238 (comment) #238 (comment) #238 (comment)
The check also runs without an existing battery when its configured clearance exceeds the AC clearance. Equal 3 ft limits describe the shipped public rules. #238 (comment)

Result reads honor their endpoint deadline. Preview reads honor the later result and artifact deadlines because the relay rereads the result. Stable opaque artifact IDs preserve delays across result refreshes and renewed signed queries. Review: #238 (comment) Review: #238 (comment)

Reject a changed same-run artifact before storage is fetched, so its Retry-After cannot be charged to an older file. The loopback regression switches A to B and requires the full 120-second delay before B is retried. Review: #238 (comment)

What changed
This fixes review comments from already-merged PRs that were never addressed on alpha. Each section below follows the original PR. The viewer recovers result reads while preserving run identity, and the docs match their source evidence.
#124: tools: viewer that films a capture reaching the server, as a labeled replay or read-only live view
Refresh-error notes are updated before either result-rendering early return and cleared when no body remains. Two browser regressions first show a pending refresh error, then switch runs and return JSON null on the first read. Both fail at 3e82e8c because the old note survives the hidden and bodyless-error states. fix
A failed refresh keeps the last valid body, including titled prompts in pending needs_views results, and displays the refresh error alongside it. Reducer and browser tests cover needs_views, plain pending and ready results followed by JSON null, plus malformed values and fetch failures. At 92a2735, the pending reducer and browser cases fail; ready controls already pass. prompt retention, error visibility The earlier ready-body regression fails at 6c8593f. vet fix
Contact retries have their own deadline. While events are throttled, the follower wakes for result and preview reads at their own deadlines. Regressions keep events delayed for 120 seconds while pending results retry after four seconds, throttled results honor their own 11-second delay, and preview retries honor 19 seconds. The pending scheduler regression fails at 92a2735, which waits 121 seconds for the next result read. thread
Pending results stay pending during refresh, rather than briefly displaying an outcome-less body. The reducer regression covers the refresh. thread
Retired-run statuses are rejected before changing lifecycle fields, and results without a nonempty string run ID are deferred. Reducer tests check unchanged state and missing, null, numeric and empty IDs. thread, thread
Terminal results can be read when every events request fails. The follower regression keeps events unavailable while the outcome succeeds. thread
The relay preserves preview Retry-After, the follower honors both seconds and HTTP-date forms, and a removed artifact triggers a result refresh without repeated stale preview reads. HTTP and follower tests cover these cases. Caretaker tests also ensure preview invalidation cannot bypass events backoff. thread, thread Retry metadata is now captured before body decoding and forwarded on both direct and preview prerequisite-result failures, including HTML errors and responses cut off after headers. Preview prerequisite failures are marked result_unavailable so the follower also delays direct result reads. Two HTTP-boundary cases and four loopback follower cases fail at 6c8593f and pass after the fix. vet fix
Preview invalidation restarts result polling even after eight pending reads moved it to the 30-second interval, while preserving the result endpoint's Retry-After. Regressions cover both 409 and preview_not_available. Result reads wait until both their cadence and server deadline allow a request. caretaker thread, delay preservation thread
An invalidated preview stays suppressed while accepted result reads advertise the same artifact. Result refreshes continue at their bounded cadence until the artifact changes or disappears; a new read revision alone cannot restart preview requests. Four regressions cover both invalidation responses and recovery through a changed artifact or run. They fail on 3ac6e49 with 60 preview requests instead of two. caretaker thread
Preview backoff belongs to the failed run/artifact, identified by an opaque digest that retains resource query selectors and excludes known credential fields and fragments. Accepted result reads and renewed signing queries cannot release that delay. A different file or run has its own deadline. Preview requests wait for the later result or artifact deadline because the relay rereads the result first; a preview delay alone does not block direct result reads. Relay and follower regressions cover these rules, including a prerequisite result read returning Retry-After. Resource selectors such as generation and versionId distinguish file versions; unknown query parameters remain part of identity. caretaker thread, artifact delay thread
A forced status refresh answered by a retired-run replica clears its completed request without restoring old status or counts. Reducer and follower regressions verify the flag clears and status reads return to five-second intervals; both fail before the fix. caretaker thread
Artifact identity retains resource-selecting and unknown query parameters while excluding known signing credentials. HTTP tests distinguish generation 1 from 2, preserve identity through renewed credentials and check query values containing question marks. caretaker thread
Preview requests carry the opaque artifact ID read by the page. If a same-run result changes files before the relay rereads it, the relay returns 409 before storage access. This prevents a file B Retry-After from being saved under file A. A loopback regression reproduces the old five-second retry and verifies the full 120-second wait for B; a relay test checks mismatch refusal and query validation. deep review thread
Storage-body cancellation errors no longer turn preview storage failures into an internal 500. The HTTP-boundary regression supplies an already-errored stream and verifies the 502, error code and Retry-After header; it fails before the guard. caretaker thread
Synthetic long polls drop at the outage boundary. The controlled scheduler test asserts a 100 ms wake and rejects a mutation that waits 800 ms for the next event. thread, thread
make check now includes the dependency-free viewer suite, and CONTRIBUTING lists the target and browser prerequisite. Command-stub tests verify inclusion, exact invocation and failure propagation. caretaker thread Adding a viewer CI job remains Sam-owned. thread
#134: docs: rebuild the README around the demo, with quick start, data and limits
#61: docs: app review, product description, UX review and friction audit
#181: build: include available experiment suites in root checks (#90, conflicts resolved)
#233: feat(eval): add local capture API client harness
#14: docs: keep only the current plan and the facts that still hold
#179: Ship beta to main: the app, server and experiments as submitted
#180: Research handoff: live survey findings and tested prototypes (#18, conflicts resolved)
#12: feat(evals): real-data evals for AR drift, wall reconstruction, coverage and the field test
#4: Add a scoring harness that compares capture pipelines with a tape survey
#16: experiments: meter close-up reading, tap-to-confirm and two retake checks
#33: docs: set the minimal experiment format and cut remaining overstatements
#8: ci: add manual TestFlight upload workflow
#5: fix(site): pin landing submodule to the implemented page
Why
Resolving a thread did not consistently mean its fix reached alpha. This PR repairs the remaining defects within its assigned paths and keeps source inspection, recorded audits and fresh synthetic tests distinct.
