ios: fix review debt on the walk, review and AR result screens - #241
Conversation
The first "Looks complete" with a question unanswered points to it, and the next tap sends. That warning was spent once per screen: answer everything, add a window, and the next tap sent without pointing to the new question. With two unanswered windows, answering the outlined one removed the outline instead of moving it to the other. The gate now re-arms when every question has an answer, and while warned the outline follows whichever question is first without one. The lost-place line no longer promises that one tap sends. #131 (comment) #131 (review) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A replay frame shown for review re-aimed the card's direction but kept the step-back and second-position flags from the last live frame, so the card could ask to step back from a frame taken far enough out. The planner's cues() now works out both flags from the camera it is given, and the review path rebuilds the whole hint from them, keeping the direction's edge hysteresis. #120 (comment) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Entering the close-up, a retake, a skip and starting over reset the number but kept the brand read with it, so a rejected reading's brand could sit beside a skipped number. The brand is local display state and is never sent; this keeps it consistent with the number. DemoEngine mirrors the same resets. #89 (comment) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The line was latched for the whole request so ARKit's plane refinements couldn't re-arm the reply lock every frame. A plane ARKit later moved or removed then left the card saying the walk was impossible, with no dotted line, though the walk could be done. SlowRelease (HouseScanKit) keeps the first reading still while a block is found and clears it once none has been found for 2 s, so the card and the dotted line come back without flickering. #168 (comment) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… chooser With -autopilotCantGetThere the held-back window was planned with each end at the farthest frame's own place. The engine puts the end through WalkedEnd.choose, which stops short of the phone with limited tracking, a phone far out from the wall, or one more than 2 m past the kept views. The planner could then hold back frames for a gap the walk never asks for. The walked policy now runs the same chooser from the farthest frame each way, with that frame's tracking, the kept views and the seen extent. #169 (comment) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…urrent The server answers objects_not_used for marks with no footprint past an unexplored end, but the app never decoded it, so a homeowner whose window was set aside had no sign it wasn't counted (#42). HouseScanKit decodes the list (optional in schema 1.0), and the result's Details lists each one in the server's words under "Not counted". featuresPastEnds also kept stale IDs after a mark was deleted or the marks were reset; those paths now refresh or clear it. A -uiDemoMarkPastEnd state covers the review row and the result list. #53 (review) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… frame The model hangs on the meter's anchor and follows its corrections, but the rebuild test compared the wall in world coordinates, so an anchor correction over 5 cm rebuilt it anyway, and a rebuild during the first 0.7 s cut the battery's rise short. The wall is now compared in the anchor's frame at build time and now, so only a change to the wall itself rebuilds the model. People occlusion, still unused, is now checked against the semantic set that would run with scene depth rather than by itself. #51 (review) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The tilt-down card and the ring's legend asked for "a small step sideways" while the second-position title asked for "one step to the side". A stretch counts only once seen from two places 0.25 m apart, and auto-capture keeps a frame for its place only 0.5 m from the last one, so a shuffle can fall short of both. All three lines now ask for a step to the side, about the 2 ft step the field runbook uses. #117 (review) #120 (review) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The card's title came from the camera's angle to the target (AimHint), while the overlay chose between the ring and an arrow from the open camera between the card and the actions. Near the card or an edge the card could say "Put the ring on the strip" with an arrow drawn, or "Tilt up a little" with the ring in plain view. The overlay now reports the marker it draws, and the walk's card takes its direction from it: a drawn ring is on screen, and an arrow standing in for a target the angle calls on screen gives its own direction. An arrow becomes a ring only 12 pt inside the ring's bounds, and an arrow's direction keeps the hint's axis bias, so neither the marker nor the title swaps several times a second at that edge. -uiDemoAimHint plants a disagreeing engine hint for the UI test. #120 (comment) #120 (review) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
"See it on your wall" judged the spot in view, and placed its chevron, in fixed bands 260 pt from the top and 160 pt from the bottom. From xxxLarge text up the card passes 260 pt, so a spot under the card counted as in view and got no chevron, and a chevron that did show sat under the card. The screen now reads the open camera the chrome measures (CameraWindow), as the walk's aim ring does. When that window can't hold the chevron and its words, the card's legend line says the spot is off screen instead. The result's anchor chain also counts as anchored only while the meter's anchor is still in the session, so the screen's drawing takes over when ARKit drops the anchor instead of trusting an entity that still reports itself anchored. #137 (review) #132 (review) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Gap requests and other targets the card doesn't follow keep the ring's bounds as they were. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Review of #241. The walk card's title follows the marker the overlay draws, and the overlay draws within the camera the card leaves open. A title that wrapped to another height moved that camera, which could flip the marker and the title back. An aim card now lays out every title its direction can swap to, unseen behind the one shown (Instruction.titleReserve), so its height doesn't change with the title. At the default size the base title is already the longest, so nothing moves there. The AR chevron's words were given a fixed 72 pt under the disc, sized for the default text; at the accessibility sizes they wrap to several lines and ran under Done. The words are now measured from an unseen copy and placed under the disc by that height. With no room for the chevron, the card's line said "turn toward the arrow" with no arrow drawn. It now names the way to turn. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

… target Review of #241 (Greptile, "Aim words can keep switching"). The card's height already stays fixed across an aim step's titles at every text size (Instruction.titleReserve, 7b54643). One path still changed it: any title change closed the card's Details, so at the largest text a marker-driven swap shrank an opened card. A swap between reserved titles now leaves Details as it is. testTheAimCardKeepsItsHeightSoAStillTargetDoesNotFlip checks, at AX XXXL, that two aim states with different titles lay the card out alike, and that a stationary target at the card's edge keeps one title and one marker for 4 s. With the reserve laid out as nothing, that state never drew a frame: the main thread spun between WallWalkScreen, CameraChrome and WayfindingOverlay, and the test's first query timed out after a spindump. …n note Independent geometry callbacks combined new note heights with old camera and content frames, oscillating during an AX5 Details scroll. Publish a complete measurement preference instead of each partial layout. When the note disappears, its reduced spacer and old scroll offset can survive for another layout. Reconstruct the settled camera even at zero note height so these transient frames cannot bring the note back. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>

Covered and absent marker reports kept the engine hint on the card even when no current arrow or ring was drawn. Clear only the aim direction and preserve the remaining guidance. Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Confirmed and fixed in 3424859. The rule that every drawn arrow controls the card still holds. A covered or absent current marker is different: there is no arrow whose direction the card should name. Only
Both new regressions failed against the unchanged 753531d production code, with four failed assertions showing the retained title. With the fix, all 11 focused UI tests passed, including both regressions, marker/card agreement, target/step hysteresis, reserved card heights, new-target Details closure, ring progress and largest-text layouts. These are review comments on already-merged BaseScanning iOS PRs that were never addressed. Most of them are about what the person scanning sees: the review gate, the aim card against the ring and arrow, the walk-out card, the AR result's chevron, and the step the aim lines ask for. Each original PR has its own section below. All repairs target alpha;
betais untouched.Companion #237 merged into alpha at
53d2f50. This branch merges that alpha commit with merge commitd5d137ed008e60c61123e7175f4e55390a3c9322. Both debug launch routes share one cached result and oneGroup, and aim advice uses the trimmed requested window incuesfor both normal and review frames.#131: Review: soft gate, window Not sure, and an assumed 3 ft AC footprint
Codex thread, Aiden's review, Should-fix 1 and 2.
On "Anything else near your meter?", the first "Looks complete" with a question unanswered points to it and the next tap sends. That warning was spent once per screen. If the homeowner answered everything and then added a window, the next tap sent without pointing to the new question. With two unanswered windows, answering the outlined one removed the outline instead of moving it to the other.
The gate now re-arms once every question has an answer. While the warning is up, the outline follows whichever question is first without an answer (
MarkFeaturesScreen.swift). The second tap still sends. The lost-place line now says "finish with Looks complete" rather than promising that one tap sends.testAWindowAddedAfterEveryAnswerIsPointedToAgain(warn, answer all, add a window, tap: pointed to, not sent; tap again: sent).#120: hold a walk aim until it is met or stalls
The second-position reserve remains shared by both aim branches, but its title is now "Step sideways, look again". The previous sentence wrapped to two lines even at default text size, growing every aim card by about 28 pt and replacing the fixture's ring with an arrow. The shorter title measures 264.98 pt in the actual
.SFUIRounded-Bold22 pt title font. It fits the 297.3 pt CI text budget at a 402 pt screen width and a conservative 270.3 pt budget at the narrowest supported iPhone width of 375 pt. A constrained text-layout probe measures one line at both widths. The existingtestAimRingShowsProgressAndItsLegendis unchanged; only the AX1 toggle test's expected copy changed. The folded-title reserve finding is addressed by keeping nonempty reserved titles laid out whether or not a separate folded lead is present. Current live ground and wall aim cards have no separate folded lead, so their reserve was already retained. The new AX5 UI fixture deliberately exercises the combined card contract, cycling ring, arrow and covered titles for the same ground target and asserting a constant enclosing card height. Reserved titles remain hidden from accessibility.
The second-position title reserve is fixed in
875615d9. Both ground and wall aims now share their reserve before either advice branch or the nil-hint return, and include the namedaimSecondPositiontitle. The same target can gain and lose that advice without moving the card or camera. The AX1 toggle regression fails against686c44bb, where the card grows from 165.7 to 206.7 pt, and holds one height after the fix. The real AX5 screen still leaves 212 pt of visible camera, above the existing 150 pt requirement; marker bounds and scrolling checks pass.Greptile: review frames keep stale advice, Greptile: ring wording can mismatch the overlay, Aiden's review.
Step-back and step-aside advice on review frames. A replay frame shown for review re-aimed the card's direction but kept the step-back and second-position flags from the last live frame.
GuidancePlanner.cues(for:)now works both out from the camera it's given, and the review path rebuilds the whole hint from them while keeping the direction's edge hysteresis (51e8e79). Check:cuesJudgeTheAdviceFromTheCameraGiven. The card names the marker that's drawn. The card's title came from the camera's angle to the target (
AimHint), but the overlay chooses between the ring and an arrow from the open camera between the card and the actions. Near the card or an edge, the card could say "Put the ring on the strip" while an arrow was drawn. The overlay now reports the marker it draws, and the walk's card takes its direction from that (be7f47e):An arrow turns into a ring only 12 pt inside the ring's bounds, and the arrow's direction keeps the hint's axis bias, so neither the marker nor the title swaps several times a second at that edge. The margin applies only on aim steps (2d81733). Check:
testTheAimCardNamesWhatIsDrawn, which plants an engine hint that disagrees with the drawing (-uiDemoAimHint).One step instruction. Covered under #117 below.
Still open: when the walk asks to tilt up over the meter. Today it asks only near the meter after both ends are marked, which the usual flow rarely reaches. That's a change to the walk's order, so it's written up for Sam as D3.
The latest arrow/card finding is fixed by using every drawn arrow's direction, including its explicit horizontal turn for behind-camera targets. Details now closes for a new aim by carrying exact ground/wall target coordinates through the instruction; marker title changes for the same target retain it. Three screen-state regressions cover a conflicting off-screen hint, same-target title swaps and target changes with identical rounded distances. All three regressions passed locally under the guard after correcting the marker fixtures.
#117: green hold, legend in the card stack, narrower progress window
Aiden's reviews and follow-up comments.
The tilt-down card and the ring's legend asked for "a small step sideways", while the second-position title asked for "one step to the side". A stretch counts only once it's seen from two places 0.25 m apart, and auto-capture keeps a frame for its place only 0.5 m from the last kept one (
AutoCaptureConfig.spacingMeters), so a shuffle can fall short of both. All three lines now ask for a step to the side, about the 2 ft step the field runbook uses (cf3a3ad). The green hold and the legend move were already on alpha.#168: treat a corridor's far wall or a side yard's fence as where the space ends
Greptile thread.
A walk-out request's "The space ends about … out" line was latched for the whole request, so ARKit's plane refinements couldn't re-arm the reply lock every frame. If ARKit later moved or removed that plane, the card kept saying the walk was impossible and hid the dotted line.
SlowRelease(HouseScanKit) now holds the first reading still while a block is found and clears it once none has been found for 2 s (eb3f270). The 2 s is a guess at what reads calmly, not a measurement. Check:SlowReleaseTests.#137 and #132: the AR result's chevron and who draws the result
Aiden's review of #137, Aiden's review of #132.
"See it on your wall" judged the spot as in view, and placed its chevron, in fixed bands 260 pt from the top and 160 pt from the bottom. From xxxLarge text up the card passes 260 pt, so a spot under the card counted as in view and got no chevron. The screen now uses the open camera measured by
CameraWindow, as the walk's aim ring does. The later accessibility-only rule that always showed an off-screen note caused a feedback loop at AX5. Opening Details covered the spot and added a five-line "Tilt the phone up" note. After Details closed, the note itself kept the spot covered and pushed Done off screen. 6850e12 decides the note against the camera the card would leave without it.
OpenCameraWithoutNotereconstructs that window from the measured layout, including scroll limits, and has Kit regressions. The note takes its room from the camera rather than pushing Done away. With Details closed, the card gives turn advice only when the chevron and its words cannot be drawn, at every text size. At AX1 through AX4 it therefore no longer repeats a drawn chevron. With Details open it never gives turn advice. 055e497 shows "The camera view is below. Close Details or scroll." whenever the chevron cannot be drawn with Details open, including windows that fit the 52 pt disc but not its label, addressing Greptile's P2. A drawn chevron's VoiceOver label now names the direction to turn.
The caretaker arrow-direction finding showed that visibility used the open window while direction still used the full camera center. With large text or Details open, a spot below that center but above the window produced a downward arrow. HouseScanKit's
OpenCameraDirectionnow computes projected directions from the visible window's center. A behind-camera spot keeps the camera-derived fallback. Package regressions cover the reversed-direction case, a covered optical-center spot, both side edges, Done and an already-visible spot. The sentence and chevron share the last named direction, applying axis hysteresis to diagonal jitter. Kit tests cover jitter in all four directions and deliberate axis changes. A spot that was off screen must move 12 pt inside the camera window before counting as in view again; Kit tests cover this entry margin at each edge and re-entry farther inside. The 12 pt margin is unmeasured on a phone.
OpenCameraDirection.classifyreturns only the four possible directions, removing the app's unreachable failure branch. The off-screen-note UI test moved from AX3 to AX5, where the chevron and label do not fit. A new AX5 regression opens and closes Details and checks that the note does not keep itself up and Done stays reachable. A new AX3 "chevron or note" regression checks that an off-screen spot has a written direction through either the chevron's VoiceOver label or the card note. These new UI regressions have not been run locally; the new AX5 regression's failure on
d5d137edis also unverified locally. The AR scene's chain now counts as anchored only while the meter's anchor is still in the session. When ARKit drops the anchor, the screen's own drawing takes over instead of trusting an entity that still reports itself anchored.
#53: keep reviewed marks past a marked end
Aiden's review.
The server answers
objects_not_usedfor marks with no footprint past an unexplored end, but the app never decoded it, so the homeowner had no sign a window or gas meter wasn't counted (#42). HouseScanKit now decodes the list, which is optional in schema 1.0. The result's Details lists each mark in the server's words under "Not counted" (63fab7e).featuresPastEndsalso kept stale IDs after a delete or a reset; those paths now refresh or clear it. Checks:decodesObjectsNotUsed(schema-valid and round-trips), themarkFeatures-pastEndscreen state, andtestAMarkTheServerSetAsideIsListedAsNotCounted. The "Not counted" hint now explains why marks were set aside without prescribing rescanning or contradicting "Capture it now". D1 remains open.
The caretaker fixture finding exposed a false past-end example: the fixture flagged the in-bounds gas meter while the result described a window elsewhere. The demo now adds a window spanning -4.1 to -3.3 m, wholly beyond the wall's left end at -2.9 m. The review expectation identifies that window's row, its 12 ft distance and its warning; the result expectation identifies the same window.
#18: Research handoff: live survey findings, options and tested prototypes
Coverage replay could leave kept camera sightings beyond a cleared end clipped away. Both
setEndandclearEndnow rebuild regular and depth coverage from every kept regular frame against the new bounds, preserving skipped and withdrawn cells. Rebuilding replaces sightings rather than merging duplicates. Four Kit regressions check restored wall/ground cells, repeated clearing, clearing then re-marking, and preserving precomputed sightings without kept frames. The restoration test fails on6ceadcf.Every end tap and clear replays synchronously on the main thread. Both repository journey/autopilot fixtures,
synthetic-wallandsynthetic-wall-lidar, contain 61 regular motion frames with normal tracking, so their median and largest count are both 61. Both are synthetic recordings; externalHOUSESCAN_REPLAYinputs are not repository fixtures. On an Apple M4 Pro Mac16,8, the same synthetic no-depth probe built with
swift test -c releasemeasured these medians over three set/clear cycles:setEndclearEndCoverage maps are per wall. AutoCapture's 0.33 s minimum interval keeps at most about three regular frames per second, so a 60 s walk along one wall keeps at most about 180 frames. Linear interpolation between the measured 100-frame and 1,000-frame rows at 180 frames estimates about 33 ms for
setEndand 44 ms forclearEnd, roughly 35–45 ms. This estimate is below the 50 ms review bar, so the full-rebuild design stays. The 61-frame synthetic fixtures are not evidence of a realistic walk count. No real-walk frame count or iPhone timing exists. These are Mac Kit CPU measurements and an interpolation, excluding depth, capture, JPEG writes and UI scheduling. They replace the earlier debug-build timings.Existing ground refinement also calls
CoverageMap.updateWalland synchronously replays all kept cameras on the main actor. It runs only after a changed ground-plane snapshot yields the first valid measurement or a height change over 1 cm. The first measured ground can also clearheightError, causing another rebuild. There is no measured per-walk frequency or fixed timer. Replay fixtures carry no plane snapshots, so those ground/refit paths run zero times in their walks. Wall refitting is restricted to meter close-up and creates a fresh map before walk frames are kept; normal anchor corrections useapplywithout replaying. End taps therefore add the same kind of main-thread replay as ground refinement, but the source does not establish that the existing replay happens as often.Regular-frame history remains unbounded:
CoverageMap.observeretains accepted frames,ScanEngine.keepandKeyframeStoreimpose no count limit, and AutoCapture's 0.33 s interval limits rate only. The separate 300-frame depth-stream budget does not cap it. The past-end debug scenario now caches its result once per process, using the sameengineCheckResultpattern as #237 and both routes are preserved by the alpha integration above.A server
past_endrequest clears its old end, so replay can bring old sightings back and start the request partly complete or with full progress. The new engine scenario callsbeginServerGapwith both cases. Full restored coverage does not immediately settle it:updateGapstill requires a newly kept photo after the request began. This preserves option A's reused sightings without bypassing that existing fresh-photo condition.Capture-test write ordering
Journey failures read capture state before the write they depended on finished. Coordinator reset tests now wait for persisted abandonment before releasing the held old reply, then submit the new photo. This establishes the late-reply schedule and preserves the fixture's one-held-reply contract. Withdrawal tests hold an already-received reply, avoiding a network timeout while the test controls its release, and require the saved abandoned state while the main actor's queued abandon task remains blocked. Recovery tests wait until disk state matches the uploader snapshot before reading it or making the folder read-only. The loopback also parks and releases replies under the same lock, so release cannot miss a reply still being computed.
The held-reply helper now records a test failure and throws a specific error for a second overlapping reply rather than crashing the process. Its regression verifies that the first reply remains releasable. Dead held-array assignments were removed, and the demo sample documentation is attached to the correct value.
#51: show the AR result anchored to the meter
Aiden's review.
The AR model hangs on the meter's anchor and follows its corrections. The rebuild test compared the wall in world coordinates, though, so an anchor correction over 5 cm rebuilt the model anyway, and a rebuild during the first 0.7 s cut the battery's rise short. The wall is now compared in the anchor's frame at build time and now (
ScanEngine.inAnchorFrame), so only a change to the wall itself rebuilds the model (db6eccd). People occlusion, which nothing turns on yet, is now checked against the semantic set that would actually run.#169: bring the UI test flake fixes to beta
Greptile thread. The code is on alpha too.
With
-autopilotCantGetThere, the held-back frames were planned with each end at the farthest frame's own place. The engine puts the end throughWalkedEnd.choose, which stops short of the phone when tracking is limited, the phone is far out from the wall, or it's more than 2 m past the kept views. The planner could then hold back frames for a gap the walk never asks for.ReplayPlanning.walkedEndsnow runs the same chooser from the farthest frame each way (3152880). Check:WalkedEndsPlanningTestscovers each cap.#89: meter number read on device
Sam's thread.
Entering the close-up, a retake, a skip and starting over cleared the meter number but kept the brand read with it. The brand now clears with the number on each of those paths, and
DemoEnginedoes the same (3e51e03). The brand is local display state and is never sent. No test covers this: the brand is never on screen after these paths, and the app has no unit-test target (see D2).Answered without a code change
ViewThatFitsmeasures each candidate's ideal width, and aTextreports its ideal width unwrapped. I rendered the same footer structure withImageRendereracross widths. It stays stacked below 548 pt and switches inline at exactly the width where every entry fits on one line, at one line's height. ThewallWalk-fullLegendscreen state also audits all three entries together.WayfindingOverlay.swift:148,CameraChrome.swift:75-80on alpha). A ring that would sit under them becomes an arrow in the open camera (WayfindingOverlay.swift:155). The fixed rectangle that remains decides only whether to show the legend. It doesn't depend on the legend's own height on purpose: if it did, the legend could switch itself on and off. The card's words now follow the drawn marker (ios: hold a walk aim until it is met or stalls, and ask for the meter ground only near the meter #120 above).Still open

End changes replay an unbounded regular-frame history on the main thread. At the code-derived bound of about 180 regular frames for a 60 s per-wall walk, linear interpolation of the Mac Release measurements estimates roughly 35–45 ms. Measured medians reach 185 ms for setting an end and 244 ms for clearing it at 1,000 synthetic no-depth frames. No real-walk frame count, iPhone timing or depth-inclusive measurement is available. D1–D3 remain open. There was no real-device AR walk in this round.

-uiDemo -uiDemoFreeze. Before is alpha at cde8450; after is this PR at 2d81733.Every aim line asks for one step to the side (#117). Same state,
-uiDemoPhase wallWalk -uiDemoAim.The card names what is drawn (#120), after only. These states plant an engine hint that disagrees with the drawing (
-uiDemoAimHint), a flag alpha doesn't have. On alpha the left one would read "Tilt up a little" over a visible ring, and the right one "Put the ring on the strip" with only an arrow on screen. The aim-card mismatch and same-target Details regression were rendered locally and their screenshots inspected. The result-screen arrow has passing package coverage, and the corrected past-end window's result-card UI test passed locally.
Not captured here: the review gate after a tap (#131), the lost-place line and the past-end row (both below the fold on the review panel), "Not counted" under Details (#53), and the AR chevron at large text (#137).
