About Me:

I'm Muhammad Shahzaib, a researcher in computational metagenomics and microbiome bioinformatics based at CIBIO (University of Trento), where I work as part of the Segata Lab (Laboratory of Computational Metagenomics). My work sits at the intersection of the human microbiome, cancer, and machine learning—using large-scale, multi-cohort metagenomics to uncover how microbial communities relate to disease. I'm especially interested in applying machine learning and AI to metagenomic data: building classifiers that distinguish disease states from taxonomic profiles, running cross-cohort meta-analyses, and turning complex microbiome data into reproducible, actionable insight.

🧪 Research & Projects

Contributor to several research projects at the Segata Lab (CIBIO, University of Trento):

  • EOCRC Microbiome Analysis — led analysis of the gut microbiome in Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer, including differential abundance and machine-learning classification across multi-cohort metagenomic data.
  • cCMD Curation — contributed to the curation of the curated Cancer Metagenomic Data resource.
  • cMD (curatedMetagenomicData) — ongoing contributions to a large-scale curated metagenomic dataset.
  • cCMD Dashboard — developing an interactive dashboard to explore cancer-microbiome curation and analysis results.

Note: several of these projects are maintained in private lab repositories.
