Highlights

Behavior changes

  • case_sensitive now applies to init kwargs and config-file sources (#900). InitSettingsSource and the JSON/TOML/YAML config sources previously ignored case_sensitive. Since it defaults to False, case-insensitive matching is now the default for these sources — e.g. Settings(TeSt=...) now populates a test field where it previously did not. Nested keys are still matched case-sensitively.
  • Fields with unresolved forward references now emit a warning (#901). Settings sources can silently fail to resolve such fields; they now raise IncompleteFieldDefinitionWarning telling you to call model_rebuild(). If you have filterwarnings = error configured, this may surface as a new failure.
  • Non-JSON env values for strict fields now raise ValidationError (#926) instead of a less specific error.

New features

  • Show environment variable names in CLI help via cli_show_env_vars=True (#860), so generated --help output doubles as configuration documentation.
  • PYDANTIC_SETTINGS_DEBUG for debugging settings resolution (#906, #913). Set it to a truthy value with DEBUG logging enabled to see each source's contribution in priority order, which source won for each value, and which env_file/secret files were probed, loaded, or skipped — the long-standing "why isn't my .env being picked up?" question.
  • toml_table_header for regular TOML files (#882, #886, #887), letting you root settings at a nested table in any TOML file, not just pyproject.toml.
  • Traversable support for JSON/TOML/YAML file sources (#902), so you can load config packaged inside a distribution — including files inside a zip or wheel — via importlib.resources.files(...) without casting to Path.
  • GCP: project_id can come from an earlier settings source (#878), rather than only from the constructor or GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT.

Bug fixes

  • Fix env vars not loading on Windows with case_sensitive=True (#894). Windows upper-cases os.environ keys, so fields raised Field required instead of picking up their values.
  • Read secret files as UTF-8 instead of the platform locale encoding (#917). On Windows code pages such as cp1252 this silently corrupted non-ASCII secrets.
  • Fix AliasPath on nested model fields not JSON-decoding env values (#898).
  • Fix case-insensitive matching for optional nested models (#905).
  • Fix dotenv extras being wrongly claimed by a complex field sharing a name prefix (#912) — e.g. dbx_token being swallowed by a db: dict field.
  • Fix nested_model_default_partial_update=True corrupting discriminated unions (#876).
  • Fix Secret subclasses crashing when loaded from the environment (#920).
  • Fix enum names not parsing through nested annotations such as Optional[Annotated[MyEnum, ...]] with env_parse_enums=True (#910).
  • An empty yaml_config_section now falls back to defaults instead of raising AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'keys' (#914).
  • NestedSecretsSettingsSource no longer follows symlinks pointing outside secrets_dir (#889).
  • GCP: skip the list_secrets call when case_sensitive=True (#862), lowering the required IAM permissions to just roles/secretmanager.secretAccessor.
  • AWS: types-boto3[secretsmanager] is no longer required at runtime (#880).

A few defaults changed in this release. If you run a server or client on 2.x, skim these first:

Behaviour changes

HTTP client redirects are only followed within the endpoint's origin (#3397)

  • Client("https://..."), streamable_http_client and sse_client follow a redirect only if it stays on the same scheme, host and port (or upgrades http to https on the same host).
  • A redirect anywhere else is not followed: the call fails with MCPError and the session stays usable (an SSE connect fails with httpx2.HTTPStatusError). If that other URL is the server you meant, use it as the endpoint URL.
  • The follow_redirects setting on an httpx2.AsyncClient you pass in is no longer used for MCP requests, so you don't need it for the trailing-slash redirect any more.
  • The OAuth providers apply the same rule to their own requests.

Idle Streamable HTTP sessions now expire (legacy <=2025-11-25 spec( (#3395)

  • A stateful session with nothing in flight for 30 minutes is closed. The client's next request gets a 404 and it has to initialize again.
  • Clients that keep the GET stream open (the SDK's Client does) are not affected. Neither are stateless servers or 2026-07-28 connections.
  • A server also holds at most 10 000 sessions at once; beyond that, new sessions get a 503.
  • To turn either off: mcp.run(transport="streamable-http", session_idle_timeout=None, max_sessions=None) (also on streamable_http_app() and run_streamable_http_async()).

The OAuth client checks the authorization server's issuer on the legacy path too (#3398)

  • For servers without protected resource metadata, authorization server metadata whose issuer isn't the server's own origin is now rejected with OAuthFlowError: Authorization server metadata issuer mismatch. The protected-resource-metadata path has done this since 2.0.
  • A 403 that isn't an insufficient_scope challenge is returned to the caller instead of retried.
  • If protected resource metadata can't be fetched because of a 5xx/429, the flow now stops instead of falling back to the legacy endpoints.

Two new MCPDeprecationWarnings (#3435, #3447)

  • ClientCredentialsOAuthProvider / PrivateKeyJWTOAuthProvider without issuer=. Pass your authorization server's issuer URL; 3.0 will require it.
  • AuthSettings with resource_server_url set but validate_token_resource unset. Set it to True or False; 3.0 defaults it to True.
  • Both keep working as before in 2.x; this mostly matters if your tests turn warnings into errors.

New

  • AuthSettings.validate_token_resource: only accept tokens your TokenVerifier reports as issued for this server (#3447).
  • issuer= on ClientCredentialsOAuthProvider and PrivateKeyJWTOAuthProvider (#3398).
  • session_idle_timeout= and max_sessions= on the Streamable HTTP server entry points (#3395).

Fixes

  • A client DELETE frees its session immediately, and a refused opening request no longer leaves a session behind (#2455, #3228, #3300).
  • $refs in a tool's outputSchema resolve within that schema only; an unresolvable one surfaces as RuntimeError: Invalid schema for tool ... (#3394).

Known gaps

The tasks extension (SEP-2663), DPoP (SEP-1932) and the jwt-bearer grant are not implemented yet; https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk/blob/main/ROADMAP.md tracks them.

Alberta moved to permanent -06 on 2026-06-18. Morocco moves to permanent +00 on 2026-09-20. More integer overflow bugs have been fixed in zic.

Changes to future timestamps

Alberta’s 2026-03-08 spring forward was its last foreseeable clock change, as it moved to permanent -06 thereafter. (Thanks to Roozbeh Pournader and others.) Model this with its traditional abbreviation CST. Although the change to permanent -06 legally took place on 2026-06-18, temporarily model the change to occur on 2026-11-01 at 02:00 instead, for the same reason we introduced a similarly temporary hack for British Columbia in 2026b.

Although another TZDB release will likely be needed soon because Northwest Territories will likely follow Alberta, the legal formalities have not yet taken place.

Morocco plans to move back to permanent UTC, without daylight saving time transitions, on 2026-09-20 at 02:00. This also affects Western Sahara.

Changes to commentary

Northwest Territories is expected to move to permanent -06 prior to 2026-11-01 02:00, when clocks would otherwise fall back. (Thanks to Tim Parenti and James Bellaire.)
