Removing a saved server, or signing out of it, made one 8-second attempt at
the session DELETE and then cleared the login. When that request failed, the
removal could never be resent, as it needed the login that was gone, and the
server kept pushing to the phone.
Removal and sign-out now allocate the removal at the record's next
generation and persist it as a pending retirement, in the same write, before
anything is sent. The retirement, POST
/api/v2/notifications/push/devices/{device_id}/retire (retirePushDevice),
carries only the installation key and generation, with no session, and is
sent first. Only a server that answers 404 or 405 gets the session DELETE,
at the same key and generation, while the login still exists. Pending
retirements are retried on app start and foreground, and when an FCM
message arrives, at most three at a time with back-off. 200, 403, 409 and
other request refusals drop the entry. 404 or 405 keeps it for 30 days, and
other failures keep it for up to 90. Signing in again, re-adding the server,
or restoring after a sign-out that stopped registers at a higher generation,
which drops the pending retirement. Outcomes go to SiloLog as PushRetire
breadcrumbs.

Lost retirement retries occur when an in-flight registration holds the server mutex for the eight-second unregister budget: pending retirement remains unpersisted, leaving only ownerLeaving=true on disk, and sign-out/removal clears the login while retryPendingRetirements ignores the record because retirement is null. Persist a durable removal obligation before waiting for the mutex, then resolve its generation under the mutex.

Confirmed. A registration blocked on the server lock let the removal time out with only ownerLeaving saved, and nothing retried it afterwards. Fixed in 2522940, without moving the generation allocation out from under the lock: a retry treats such a record as a pending removal once its login is gone, and queues and sends its retirement under the lock. ownerLeaving is already the durable obligation, saved before the wait. A new test, aRemovalThatRanOutOfTimeWaitingOnARegistrationIsRetiredOnceTheLoginIsGone, failed on 198a726 and passes now.

Thanks for confirming. Based on your description, 2522940 addresses the reported gap: ownerLeaving is the durable removal obligation persisted before waiting for the lock, and retries now recover it once the login is gone, allocating the retirement generation under the server mutex.
The regression test failing on 198a726 and passing with the fix directly covers the timeout scenario. My original recommendation was too prescriptive: a separate pre-lock retirement record is unnecessary if retries honor the existing durable marker.

Race condition identified in restoreAsRegisteredOwner: it cancels the current record's retirement without rechecking latestRequests after acquiring the server mutex, so a removal that becomes newest during the wait can lose its pending retirement before applyOnServer rejects the stale attempt, leaving the subsequently removed server without retries. Recheck the attempt inside the mutex before cancelRetirement.

Confirmed from source; it needs a real thread interleaving, so there's no test for it. Fixed in 2522940: restore checks latestRequests again after taking the server lock and looking up the owner, before it cancels the retirement.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Thanks for confirming. The recheck in 2522940, as described, addresses the reported race: a superseded restore exits before canceling the pending retirement.
A deterministic regression test would need a synchronization hook to force that interleaving; a timing-based test would be flaky.

Retirement timeouts bypass retirementFailures bookkeeping because cancellation exits sendRetirement before settleRetirement and retryRetirement rethrows it, leaving a server that stalls beyond eight seconds immediately eligible on every foreground and FCM message and repeatedly occupying the callback for the full budget instead of respecting RETIREMENT_MIN_RETRY_MS. Record timeout failures outside the timed block, including cancellation by the Firebase callback's outer budget.

Confirmed. Fixed in 2522940: when retryRetirement runs out of its budget, the pass now records a failure for that server, so the next push waits out RETIREMENT_MIN_RETRY_MS. A new test, aRetirementThatStallsWaitsOutTheBackOffLikeOneThatFailed, failed on 198a726 (three sends instead of two) and passes now.

Thanks for confirming. Based on your description, 2522940 addresses this finding: timed-out retirement attempts now count as failures, so subsequent pushes respect RETIREMENT_MIN_RETRY_MS.
The regression test failing on 198a726 and passing with the fix provides coverage for the reported behavior.

Review of 198a726. Four defects need fixing. Two are new below; the other two are in Kody's threads, which I've replied to. A summary with scores follows once the fixes are pushed. I'm fixing all of these in a commit on this branch, so there's no need to change anything yourself.
Reviewed with Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5), with a read-only cross-check by Codex (gpt-6.1-sol).
A removal that ran out of time waiting on a registration holding the server's lock persisted only ownerLeaving, and one made by the previous release has no retirement field at all. Neither was ever retried, so the server kept pushing once the login was cleared. Retries now queue and send a retirement for such a record once its login is gone, at the generation a removal nobody confirmed already holds. A retry that runs out of time now counts as a failure, so pushes respect the back-off. Every retry pass shares one three-permit limit. Restore rechecks that it is still the newest operation under the server's lock before it drops a retirement, so it can't cancel one a newer removal queued. Review summary: reviewed 198a726, fixes pushed as 2522940 Fit: 9/10 · Readiness: 7/10 — conditional (assuming CI is green) Fit: removing a server or signing out should stop its pushes, and before this PR a single failed request left them running for good. Sending a retirement without a login, at the same generation the server already orders, fixes that at the right boundary without adding a setting. The Apple side is paired in Silo-Server/silo-apple#867, and the server side (Silo-Server/silo-server#2834) is merged. Readiness: the approach holds up and the review's defects are fixed, but nobody has watched a retirement go out from a real device. A local debug build has no Firebase config, so it never registers. Tests: User manual: no change needed. The site doesn't describe what happens to push registrations when you remove a server. Apple/Android parity: Apple has the same change in Silo-Server/silo-apple#867. That PR needs a check for the same two gaps: a removal that times out before queueing its retirement, and removals left by the previous release. Cross-provider review: Codex (gpt-6.1-sol), one read-only round. It confirmed the Kody findings and found the shared-limit and server-fence issues. Every finding was checked against the source. Terminal retirement recovery incorrectly selects dropped retirements through unqueuedRemoval: settleRetirement(DROPPED) clears only retirement, leaving ownerLeaving=true and acknowledged=false, so the new recovery branch requeues definitively refused requests and restarts expired retirements' lifetimes once the login is gone. Persist a distinct terminal state or clear the recovery marker on terminal drops before selecting unqueued removals.

Validation tasks: changes Silo-Server/silo-server#1234 C2
Removing a saved server, or signing out of it, made one 8-second attempt at the logged-in push DELETE and then cleared the login. If that request failed, for example because the server was unreachable, the app could never resend it, and the server kept pushing to the phone. The same bug on iPhone showed up as blank "New notification available" banners from a server the user had removed.
Approach
Removal and sign-out now save a pending retirement at the record's next generation before sending anything. The app then calls the new
POST /api/v2/notifications/push/devices/{device_id}/retire(retirePushDevice, Silo-Server/silo-server#2834). That call carries only the installation key and generation, which the app keeps after it removes the server, so it works without a login. The Apple client does the same in Silo-Server/silo-apple#867.
Validation
AndroidPushRegistrarTest(33) covers retirement, the 404/405 fallback, retries, expiry and re-adding, plus three regression tests from review that failed on 198a726: a removal that times out on the server lock, a removal left by the previous release, and a stalled retry skipping the back-off.PushRegistrationApiTest(7) covers the retire request.Evidence
