feat(eventconsumer): give each delivered event a stable event_id - #41
Conversation
Silo is moving plugin event delivery to at-least-once: the API server that produced an event stores it, any API server delivers it, and a failed or timed-out delivery is retried. HandleEventRequest gains event_id, the same on every attempt and for every installation, so a consumer can skip an event it has already handled. runtime-host.md documents the delivery contract. The field is additive: older hosts leave it empty and older plugins ignore it. Refs #40 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The legacy-host delivery guidance is a bounded documentation uncertainty: consumers could rely on an unverified no-retry guarantee. Confirm the behavior before relying on that guidance. Pre-merge checks |

EventConsumer documentation to state that event_id is empty and failed
deliveries may be retried; make clear that consumers must not assume only one

- Around line 18-21: Update the event_id guidance in
proto/silo/plugin/v1/event_consumer.proto, lines 18–21, to say consumers skip
previously handled IDs only when event_id is non-empty. Update the local and
upstream idempotency guidance in docs/runtime-host.md, lines 208–209, to
likewise prohibit using an empty legacy event_id as a deduplication key.

Problem
Closes #40
A plugin's
HandleEventreceives onlyevent_nameandpayload, so it cannot tell a repeated delivery from a new event. Silo-Server/silo-server#2314 moves the host to at-least-once delivery: the API server that produced an event stores it in a Postgres outbox, any API server delivers it, and a failed or timed-out delivery is retried. A retry can repeat an event the plugin already handled, for example when the plugin acted but its reply timed out. A plugin that sends notifications needs an ID to skip that repeat.Approach
HandleEventRequestgainsstring event_id = 3. The host sends the same value on every attempt, and every installation that receives the event sees the same value. Hosts that predate the field leave it empty.docs/runtime-host.mdgains "Receiving events", which states the contract plugin authors can rely on: once stored, an event reaches each subscribing installation at least once across the cluster unless every attempt fails; any API server may make the call, and only that process sees it; an error or no answer within 10 seconds asks for another attempt; retries stop after about 20 minutes; events are not ordered; and an event can be lost before Silo stores it.Compatibility and release
Additive. Older plugins ignore the field; older hosts leave it empty and keep their old behavior (one delivery per API server, no retries). No RPC is added, so
EventConsumerServeris unchanged. The host change needs a tagged release that carries this field; Silo-Server/silo-server#2314's pull request pins this commit until then.Validation
