Problem

Closes #2380
Related issue: #1201
Depends on: Silo-Server/silo-plugin-sdk#43 (merged, released in v0.26.0)
Validation tasks: changes #1202 C4

A request-router plugin that needs no API key can't be used today. Silo skips every router connection without a key, and the admin form won't save or test a server without a URL and a key. So an approved request sits in Approved with "request backend connection has no API key; add it in admin" until it fails, and a router that talks to a local tool or signs in some other way only works with a dummy key. This change lets a router declare that it needs no key or no URL (Silo-Server/silo-plugin-sdk#43). Silo then routes to its servers, checks their status and tests them without a key, and the admin form saves them.

This builds against silo-plugin-sdk v0.26.0, which includes Silo-Server/silo-plugin-sdk#43. The temporary replace is gone.

#1202 C4 passed with a test router that has a key, and recorded the key-less case as this limitation (#2380). This change lifts it on purpose: routers with a key behave as before, and a key-less router now receives requests too. C4 should be re-run with a key-less router after merge.

Approach

  • The SDK change adds api_key_optional and base_url_optional to RequestRouterDescriptor. Booleans named this way round keep the descriptor's rule that absent means false. A router that doesn't set them, a host on an older SDK, and code reading the generated getters all keep today's behaviour. The issue suggested requires_* defaulting to true, which a proto3 bool can't express.
  • RouterFeatures gains APIKeyOptional, read from the capability stored at install like supports_seasons. Every place that skipped a connection without a key now asks one check, missingAPIKey:
    • submission, for both direct and routed submissions;
    • the "no usable connection" message and the quality fail-safe;
    • status checks and the download refresh;
    • the route preview;
    • the connection test.
  • That check reads the declaration only for a connection without a key, so servers with a key never depend on it. If the declaration can't be read, the connection is skipped like one without a key, and a sibling with a key still takes the request.
  • Silo never required a URL, so base_url_optional only changes the admin form.
  • On save, a saved key still has to be typed again when the URL changes. A server saved without a key has no key to protect, so it can now change its URL without one. Before, a server without a key could never change its URL. The save now checks this rule again under the row lock, so a key or URL saved by another admin in the meantime can't end up paired with a different address. That also closes a window that already existed on main.
  • A save validates the URL it stores, blank included, so a plugin can refuse a blank URL it can't use. In a connection test of a saved server, a blank URL is tested as blank for a router that declares base_url_optional; routers that need a URL still treat it as "keep the saved address". Clearing the URL counts as changing it, so a saved key has to be typed again and the connection test goes without it. A connection test that leaves base_url out still tests the saved address; only a base_url sent blank (spaces included) clears it.
  • The v2 plugin views gain request_router { api_key_optional, base_url_optional } on request_router.v1 capabilities. This is additive, and v1 is unchanged. For an installation the flags come from the stored capability, which is what routing reads, so the form never offers a setup that routing then refuses.
  • When the plugin declares it, the web admin form drops the URL or key requirement from Save and Test and labels the field "(optional)". It also stops showing such a server as needing setup, both on its tile and in the routing warnings.
  • The first commit drops the two breaking-change approvals that feat(web): remove admin color overrides, fonts, and custom CSS #2413 consumed. The contract check reports them as stale for any change to the v2 contract, so this branch fails that check without it. It can land on its own if you'd rather.

Validation

Tested commit: 62b6e99. Review fixes in d9f7f4b: a save validates the blank URL it stores instead of the saved one, and a v2 base_url of spaces is sent as "". go test ./internal/requests/ ./internal/apiv2/ and golangci-lint on the changed lines pass, and both updated tests fail on 62b6e99. 3ba9d3d merges main and moves to SDK v0.26.0; go build ./... and the tests for internal/requests, internal/apiv2, internal/plugins, internal/api and internal/api/handlers pass on it.

  • Go: go vet and the focused tests pass for internal/requests, internal/plugins, internal/api, internal/api/handlers and internal/apiv2.
    • New tests cover a key-optional router through auto-approval, routed submission, the route preview, the reconcile status check, the download refresh, the connection test and URL changes on save.
    • Further tests cover:
      • an unreadable declaration, with and without a keyed sibling, and in the download refresh;
      • a cleared URL on a URL-optional router, with and without a saved key;
      • the installation view using the stored descriptor;
      • the v2 field mapping.
    • A database test checks that a blank-key save can't keep a saved key for another address, on both save paths. It is added to scripts/ci/db-contracts.txt, and I ran it with the package's other database tests against a local migrated PostgreSQL 18.
    • The tests for key-optional routers fail on main. The keyed-sibling test and the "router needs a key" case pass on both, as regression guards. The existing no-key tests still cover routers without the flags.
  • Contract: these pass:
    • make verify-apiv2-openapi, verify-apiv2-web-types and verify-apiv2-fixtures;
    • TestCommittedArtifactMatchesRouter;
    • verify-apiv2-contract against main, which reports 8 additive changes and none breaking.
  • Web: tsc -b, and eslint and prettier on the changed files, are clean. vitest passes for RequestsSettings, requestRoutingModel, RequestRouting and RequestRoutingMode. New tests cover:
    • saving and testing a server without a URL or key;
    • the default plugin still needing both;
    • showing "Needs setup" only when the plugin needs a key.
  • Not run locally: make lint-changed, make test-go, make test-web, pnpm run build and make verify-local-paths. My machine blocks whole-repo runs, and the last needs a newer bash. CI runs them.
  • Live: a local dev build with a minimal test router that needs no key or URL. The before and after runs are on the evidence page below.

Evidence

Evidence: https://evidence.siloserver.org/r/silo-server/pr-2439/

Before is main at 6144c45 and after is this branch, on the same database with the same test router. On main the router is 0.1.0, without the flags, since it can't declare them there. After the upgrade it is 0.2.0, with them.

  • Web admin, desktop and phone:
    • Before: the server's tile says "Needs setup", and Add server and Test stay disabled without a URL and key.
    • After: the tile says "Connected", both fields read "(optional)", Test answers "Connected", and the server saves.
  • Request API:
    • Before: the approved request stays approved with last_error "request backend connection has no API key; add it in admin".
    • After: it is downloading at 62%, with two targets.
  • Plugin calls:
    • Before: the router only ever gets Validate.
    • After: it gets Fulfill and CheckStatus, with no key and no URL.

Risks

  • Routers without the flags: their connections never reach the new read, and their messages are the same. One save is now refused: an API save with a blank URL and a blank key on a server that has a saved key. It used to wipe the URL and leave the server unusable; now it asks for the key again. The web form can't send it.
  • Silo reads the flags from the capability stored when the plugin was installed or updated. A router installed while Silo ran an older SDK needs updating after the upgrade before the flags apply. Until then, both the form and routing treat it as needing a key.
  • Older Silo versions refuse a bare plugin binary that declares the flags, because they parse binary manifests strictly. I filed this as A plugin whose manifest has fields the server doesn't know can't be uploaded as a binary or started #2436. A plugin archive installs.

Follow-ups, not in this PR:

  • Model(s): claude-opus-5-5

  • Involvement: AI-assisted with Claude Opus. I directed the task and designed the work.

  • Adversarial review: a separate Claude Code subagent reviewed the diff and ran probe tests. It checked for behaviour changes to routers without the flags, a stored key reaching a changed URL, missed key checks, web state, and the API contract. It found three problems, all fixed here:

    • the form and routing could read the flags from different places;
    • an unreadable declaration blocked a healthy sibling connection;
    • a hint still asked for a URL and key.

    Its lower-severity findings are listed under Risks and follow-ups. Kody's review found three more issues, all fixed in d440d71:

    • the download refresh cleared progress when the declaration couldn't be read;
    • a key saved between validation and the write could pair with a new URL;
    • a cleared URL was tested against the saved one.

    CodeRabbit then found that clearing the URL kept a saved key paired with the blank address; that is fixed in b208392. Kody then found that a connection test leaving base_url out was treated as a clear; that is fixed in 62b6e99.

Note

Allow keyless request routing when the router plugin declares the API key optional

  • Adds APIKeyOptional and BaseURLOptional flags to RouterFeatures (router_seasons.go). Submission, status checks, route previews, download refresh, and routing warnings now accept a connection without an API key or base URL when the bound router capability declares that field optional. Missing capabilities still require both.
  • The admin API exposes the optionality flags on plugin capabilities (admin_plugin_installations.go), with values sourced from the stored capability record rather than the manifest (plugins.go). The server editor UI uses these flags to mark fields optional and allow saving or testing without a URL or key (RequestServerEditor).
  • The options API distinguishes an omitted base URL from an explicitly blank one via BaseURLCleared on requests.Integration (types.go).
  • Repository.updateIntegration now locks the row and rejects a key-omitted update when the stored address differs from the submitted one (repository.go); plugin validation receives the submitted base URL instead of a restored saved URL.
  • Bumps the plugin SDK to v0.26.0 (go.mod).
  • Risk: capability-read failures now block keyless connections — a router whose RouterFeatures lookup fails is skipped rather than treated as keyless; check missingAPIKey in service.go and targetReportsProgress in downloads.go for the new error paths.

Macroscope summarized 3ba9d3d.

The getBrandingCapabilities and getThemeOverrides approvals belong to the
change Silo-Server#2413 merged, so the contract check reports them as stale against
the new base for any change to the v2 contract.
A request_router plugin can now declare api_key_optional and
base_url_optional (silo-plugin-sdk#42). Routing, status checks, the download
refresh, the route preview and the connection test use a connection without
a key when its plugin declares api_key_optional, through one check that
reads the declaration only for a connection without a key. A server saved
without a key can change its URL without one; a saved key still has to be
typed again.

The v2 plugin installation view carries both flags on a request_router.v1
capability, and the admin form saves and tests a server without a key or
URL when its plugin needs neither, and stops showing it as needing setup.

Closes Silo-Server#2380
Temporary: replace the SDK with the commit of Silo-Server/silo-plugin-sdk#43
so CI can build this branch. Replace this commit with a bump to the release
that carries api_key_optional and base_url_optional before merging.

📝 Walkthrough

Request-router capabilities now expose API-key and base-URL optionality. Backend connection handling and admin server setup use those flags. Integration options distinguish omitted URLs from explicitly blank URLs, and saved keys require re-entry when an address changes.

…ey-less routers

- The download refresh keeps a key-less target's progress when its router's
  declaration can't be read, instead of clearing it: statusCheckable now
  returns the read error.
- The save checks again, under the row lock, that a blank key keeps the
  saved key only for the address it was saved for, so a key or address saved
  by another admin between validation and the write is never paired with a
  different address.
- A blank URL on a saved server is tested and validated as blank when its
  router declares base_url_optional, since that is what the save stores.

… key

For a router that declares base_url_optional, clearing a saved server's URL
pointed the saved key at a different destination without asking for it
again. A blank address is now a different address everywhere the rule
applies: the save asks for the key again, the locked write refuses to keep
it, and the connection test goes without it.
Comment thread internal/requests/service.go Outdated
The v2 options body lets a client leave base_url out to test a saved
server. For a router that declares base_url_optional, that was treated
like a cleared URL and tested without an address. Only a base_url sent
blank on purpose is a clear now; the request carries that through
Integration.BaseURLCleared, and an omitted URL tests the saved one.

Review of 62b6e99: two low-severity findings, both on how a blank URL is handled. I'm fixing both in commits on this branch. A summary with scores follows once the fixes are pushed.

A save with a blank URL for a server saved without a key validated the
saved address but stored a blank one. With api_key_optional such a server
takes requests, so routing would send the plugin an empty URL. The save now
validates the URL it is given; a blank URL still stands for the saved
address in a connection test.

A v2 base_url of spaces also reached the plugin as sent when the router
takes no URL, while the save stored it blank. adminRequestBaseURL now
returns "" for any blank address.

Review summary

Reviewed head: 62b6e99. Fixes pushed in d9f7f4b. 3ba9d3d merges main and moves to silo-plugin-sdk v0.26.0.

The approach holds up. The router declares what it can do without, and Silo reads it from the capability stored at install, which is the same source routing uses. Every former APIKeyRef == "" check now goes through one helper. Routers without the flags behave as before, apart from the save refusal described under Risks.

Addressed in d9f7f4b

  • A save with a blank URL validated the saved address but stored a blank one. With api_key_optional, that server could look ready and send the plugin an empty URL. The save now validates the URL it stores. The architecture doc and the BaseURLOptional comments now say so.
  • A v2 base_url of spaces reached the plugin untrimmed. It is now sent as "".

Both have regression coverage. The updated tests fail on 62b6e99 and pass on d9f7f4b. I updated the PR body's Approach and Validation sections to match.

Remaining

  • feat(requestrouter): let request routers say they need no API key or base URL silo-plugin-sdk#43 is merged and released as v0.26.0, and the branch now builds against that release instead of the fork. Merging main also clears the Go lint failure on d9f7f4b, which came from a main line counted against the old merge base.

  • Needs your call (maintainers): the frozen v1 PUT for a request integration now refuses a blank base_url with a blank key when a key is saved. Before, it saved and blanked the URL. The PR body lists this under Risks. No first-party client sends that request, since the web uses v2 and the apps have no request server admin. Accept it as bridge-safe, or keep v1's old behaviour.

  • Non-blocking: when the stored capability can't be read, the route preview says the server "has no API key" instead of naming the read error. The plugin views also make one extra capability query per request-router installation. Neither needs to hold this PR.

  • The first commit, which empties breaking-approvals.json, is now a no-op: main already has the empty file.

Validated features: none of the passed validation cases reach this code. Validation tasks: unblocks #1202 C4 in the body is right.

User manual: Silo-Server/siloserver.org#205 covers the form changes, and these fixes don't change what it describes.

Apple / Android / jellycompat: no change needed. Request server admin is web-only, and jellycompat has no request integrations.

Fit: 8/10 · Readiness: 8/10 — conditional (assuming CI is green)

  • Fit 8: it fixes a real gap (Request-router plugins that need no API key never receive requests #2380) at the right boundary, and it lets the request-router test plugin in Requests — Server #1202 C4 run without a dummy key. It adds two manifest flags and an additive v2 field, which is new surface area, but no new setting.
  • Readiness 8: the code is sound, with focused tests for each path, and it builds against the released SDK. The remaining condition is a maintainer's call on the v1 save refusal.

Reviewed with Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5); Codex (gpt-6.1-sol) ran an independent pass with no findings.

The recorded Server C4 scenario exercises a keyed test router and notes that a router needing no API key cannot receive requests (#2380). This PR changes the router eligibility, submission, and status-poll path for keyless optional-key routers, which that scenario did not exercise. This is a major change to C4's coverage: the PR must explain why it intentionally expands the validated behavior, and C4 needs re-validation after merge with a keyless router. The task entry documents a keyed-plugin run, not a blocked case, so unblocks is inaccurate. Use Validation tasks: changes #1202 C4.

Automated check: Macroscope check run agent (gpt-6-luna). No validation was performed.

silo-plugin-sdk#43 is released in v0.26.0, so the temporary replace that
pointed the SDK at the change's fork commit goes.

The Evidence page is linked and the description covers the server tile and form changes on desktop and phone, plus the request outcome. Please ensure it also shows:

  • The routing editor’s changed “needs setup” warning (web/src/pages/admin-settings/requestRoutingWarnings.ts): before and after for the same routing configuration, at desktop and phone widths where the warning appears.
  • The add/test/save flow for a server without a URL or API key (web/src/pages/admin-settings/RequestServers.tsx): a short recording of the multi-step flow, since the described before-and-after states do not show the sequence.

Automated check: Macroscope check run agent (gpt-6-luna). Evidence was not reviewed for correctness.
