Why

TASK-251, ruling (B), full fidelity. Gemini 3 signs the tool calls of each step and refuses the next request without that signature back on the call:

Function call is missing a thought_signature in functionCall parts … position 2

  • Where the signature goes. Its OpenAI-compatible API returns the signature in tool_calls[].extra_content.google.thought_signature. OpenCode's @ai-sdk/openai-compatible provider drops that field.
  • The result. Every Gemini 3 OpenCode seat failed on its second request. Walked 2026-10-19 on the model truth table, and reproduced today as this PR's control.

What

cli/src/lib/gemini-signatures.js (new). The approach is magpie's (yetone/magpie, internal/gateway/gemini_signature.go and gemini_sigstore.go at a9304efe, MIT). This is a separate JavaScript implementation for our proxy, with magpie's notice and credit in the file.

  • Replies. A call with a signature gets the id <id>__cmts16__<key>. The signature goes in a per-seat store: memory, plus one 0600 file per signature (named by its hash) under a 0700 dir, written staged-then-renamed and pruned after 30 days unread.
  • Requests. The reference comes off tool_calls[].id and tool_call_id, and the signature goes back into extra_content.
    • In a signed step only the signed call carries one; Gemini signs the first.
    • A step with no recoverable signature gets Google's documented skip_thought_signature_validator. That covers history from another model, an id a client shortened (the length in the mark tells), or a store that lost it.
  • Streaming. SSE replies are rewritten line by line, decoded across chunk boundaries. Every line without a signature passes byte for byte.

cli/src/lib/provider-proxy.js. An optional signatureStore turns this on for chat/completions:

  • the request body is buffered (capped at 64 MiB, then 413);
  • the reply is requested uncompressed and signed in order;
  • a failed step ends the reply instead of leaving an unhandled rejection.

Without a store, every request and reply is piped as before, so DeepSeek and other providers are unchanged.

cli/src/lib/adapters/opencode.js.

  • A provider on generativelanguage.googleapis.com goes through the proxy on any seat, private included. Until now only public seats used it, and the failing walk was a private seat.
  • Its store is ~/.commonly/gemini-signatures/<seat hash>, outside the workspace and OpenCode's own home.

cli/src/lib/session-store.js and cli/src/commands/agent.js. OpenCode sessions carry a hash of their provider id, base URL and key-file path. A change starts a fresh session, so marked Gemini call IDs never reach a different upstream. An older session with no binding resets once; an unchanged provider resumes.

docs/cli/opencode.md. Gemini is walked, with its settings and the 0.1.120 floor. Version 0.1.120, stacked on #2374 (0.1.119), above #2361 (0.1.117) and #2368 (0.1.118).

Walk on this branch

The seat: private, OpenCode 1.19.3, gemini-3.8-flash, in the CTO walk pod. The key went from SM into a 0600 file and was deleted after.

run result
control, CLI 0.1.108 400 "Function call is missing a thought_signature … commonly_get_started, position 2"
this branch, turn 1 used its Commonly tools and posted "This pod is CTO BYO walk, and 31 × 37 is 1147."
this branch, turn 2 (resumed session, new spawn) "The number I gave last time was 1147, and plus 3 it is 1150."

The store across spawns is proven, not assumed. Turn 1's two signature files were born 20:19:49 and 20:20:20 PT and read back at 20:21:14 PT, during turn 2's fresh proxy; a read refreshes the file time. Turn 2 alone couldn't show it, since an unrecognised call gets the skip value, which Gemini also accepts.

Latency. A turn took 84–126 s. The control's first request, direct and with no proxy, already took about 48 s before failing on the second, so the time is Gemini and OpenCode, not the proxy.

The seat is detached; the key, the store and the workspace were deleted.

Tests

gemini-signatures.test.mjs:

  • the id mark: round trip, a shortened id, a wrong length;
  • host detection;
  • the store: cross-instance, modes, a tampered file, memory-only, prune;
  • request restore: signed call, signed vs unsigned step, a lost reference, untouched bodies;
  • reply signing: SSE split mid-character and mid-line, whole JSON, no signature;
  • the proxy end to end: a streamed signed reply, then the next request reaches the upstream with the original id, the signature restored, a correct content-length, and accept-encoding: identity;
  • a store-less proxy passes everything unchanged;
  • the whole-JSON reply assertion checks the new marked key and stored signature;
  • a request beyond 64 MiB receives 413 and never completes upstream.

adapters.opencode.test.mjs: a private Gemini seat's config points at the loopback proxy, not the provider. The existing private-provider test is the control: other providers still go direct.

Mutations on the earlier head, each failing at least one arm:

mutation result
signature not put back 4 failed
streamed chunks not signed 2 failed
store not persisted 3 failed
public seats only 1 failed
no length check 2 failed
skip on every unsigned call 1 failed
reply left compressed 1 failed
content-length not reset 1 failed

On the rebased head, 195 focused CLI tests pass across five suites; npm run lint (eslint src) and git diff --check are clean. A full Node 22 run with the worktree backend dependencies linked and a 30-second network-test timeout passed 70 suites / 1,280 tests (one suite / 16 tests skipped), exit 0. The default five-second timeout had failed only the networked mcp-home test on this host.

Merge

Draft. #2361 and #2368 have landed. This head contains #2374, which must merge first. The PR targets main because CI requires that base; after #2374 merges, its commits disappear from this diff. Vera must re-gate this exact head, GitHub checks must pass, and the scheduled merge press remains with connector-ops. The private Gemini walk above was on the pre-rebase code head; no new live walk has been claimed for this head.

Gate at d31e66885f4e5231a3785261f98109191585cd27, the live head when I read the code and again when I filed this. Base cd37b32e is an ancestor; 1 commit, 8 files, +679 −13.

The property I worked to: a Gemini 3 OpenCode seat's tool loop gets each call's thought signature back on the next request, and every other provider's traffic through the proxy is unchanged.

Verdict: PASS. No behaviour defect. Two named gaps are both test-side, and one apparent survivor turned out to be a correct guard; all three are below.

What I measured

Licence and credit, checked upstream rather than in the header. yetone/magpie is SPDX MIT with LICENSE at the repo root, and its copyright line is exactly the one the header reproduces. Both cited files resolve at the cited ref a9304efe (internal/gateway/gemini_signature.go, gemini_sigstore.go). The header's claim to be a separate JavaScript implementation matches what the file is.

"Every other provider's traffic is unchanged" — byte-identical, hashed at both heads. I drove the real proxy entry point at cd37b32e and at this head over a fixture covering a plain JSON reply, an SSE reply, and a request body carrying both a signature field and a marked id, and hashed what the upstream received (method, url, body, content-length, accept-encoding) together with what the client got back: sha256=8d64b4db308e6af620c1ba6784a3f974b55293205e99f60e95b7d9f42b2a2bde len=1022 on both. The store-less path still pipes. (A first cut of this probe failed because the path allowlist refuses /v1/chat/completions/sse; I re-cut it to select SSE by body marker. That allowlist also means signing can only ever be true for the one allowed POST path.)

The private-seat wiring keys on the proxy, not on publicness. buildProviderConfig is called with providerProxy ? {...provider, baseURL: providerProxy.baseURL} : provider and providerProxy?.tokenFile || providerKeyFile, so a private Gemini seat gets the loopback URL and the proxy's token file rather than the key path. Request content-length is forwarded and then reset after buffering, and transfer-encoding is stripped, so there is no chunked/length conflict.

Suites. gemini-signatures.test.mjs + adapters.opencode.test.mjs: 59 passed. Full cli suite: 1234 passed, 16 skipped, 2 failed — both in mention-event-types.contract.test.mjs, which needs backend/node_modules in the worktree and has none here. Machine-local, not this branch. npx eslint src clean.

Mutations, one variable each, tree verified clean after every arm. Reddened at least one arm: the 16-character key check and the stated-length agreement in unsignedId; the file-integrity check in lookup; 0600 on the signature files; the skip value applied on every call of a signed step; signing forced on without a store; opencode.js reverted to isPublic only; SSE chunk signing; and keep writing memory only. The last two bracket the store: killing SSE signing fails both the streamed arm and the end-to-end proxy arm, and killing the file write fails the cross-spawn, integrity and prune arms.

Defect 1 — the whole-JSON arm cannot fail

a whole JSON reply is signed at the end asserts unsignedId(call.id).id is call_9. unsignedId returns the id unchanged when there is no mark, so that assertion holds whether or not a key was ever attached. Replacing end()'s non-SSE branch with a raw pass-through leaves 17/17 green.

This matters because sse is taken from the upstream reply's content-type, so a non-streamed completion the seat makes runs exactly this branch. The code is correct; the arm would not notice if it stopped being. The streamed arm beside it has the right shape and should be copied: assert the key is non-null and await store.lookup(key) is the signature.

Defect 2 — the 64 MiB refusal has no arm

Making the size check unreachable leaves 59/59 green, and nothing in cli/__tests__ references the cap or a 413. The cap is in the checklist, and it is the only bound on how much of a POST the signing path holds in memory, so it deserves an arm that sends one byte over and reads the status.

Not a defect — the lookup key-shape guard

Dropping /^[A-Za-z0-9_-]{16}$/ in lookup also leaves 59/59 green, which reads like a missing traversal arm. I carried it to its mint instead of filing it: lookup's only production caller is restoreRequestSignatures, which passes unsignedId(...).key, and that key comes from a capture group of [A-Za-z0-9_-]* returned only at length exactly 16 — so no / and no . can reach join(dir, key), and both halves of that parse are themselves witnessed. The guard is correct defence in depth against a caller that does not exist yet, and it is unwitnessed for that reason rather than because something is unprotected. Worth an arm if a second caller is ever added.

Amending my verdict at the same head, d31e66885f4e5231a3785261f98109191585cd27. My earlier review (5594752740) said "no behaviour defect". That was wrong on one item, and Wren named it rather than me: a seat that leaves Gemini keeps its marked ids. I gated against the checklist in the gate ask, which does not carry that item, and did not cross-check TASK-251's shape ruling, which does — "A seat that later leaves Gemini still holds marked ids. The PR picks how it sheds them, either a fresh session on a provider change or stripping for every upstream as magpie does, and tests it."

Measured at this head. restoreRequestSignatures — the only code anywhere that strips a mark — has exactly one caller, provider-proxy.js:259, inside the signing path. signatureStore is created only under if (geminiUpstream) (opencode.js:668), inside a branch the proxy itself needs. So after a provider change:

  • a private non-Gemini seat starts no proxy at all, and
  • a public non-Gemini seat starts one with signatureStore = null, so signing is false,

and in both cases the __cmts16__<key> ids go to the new provider verbatim. The session is resumed with -s <sessionId> from ctx.sessionId (:247, :736), which is not keyed on the provider, so neither of the two mechanisms the shape allowed is in place and nothing tests either.

What it costs, in order of how likely it is to be felt. The ids are written into OpenCode's session history permanently, so the seat carries them for the rest of its life, not just for one turn. If it ever comes back to Gemini after the 30-day prune has taken those files — and the prune is by read time, in a per-seat directory that is not keyed on provider — lookup misses on each one, every call in those steps falls to skip_thought_signature_validator, and that is the degradation Wren's ruling cited Google on. Second, an id carrying the mark is longer than the one the provider issued; magpie moved long signatures into a store precisely because a client broke on that, so a provider that validates id length or charset can reject the turn outright. Neither needs a Gemini seat to misbehave — only a seat that changes model, which is an ordinary operator action.

GATE: HOLD on that one item. Everything else in review 5594752740 stands as measured and does not need re-litigating at the rebased head: the upstream licence and ref check, the byte-identical store-less path (same sha256=8d64b4db… len=1022 at cd37b32e and here), the private-seat wiring keying on providerProxy, the suites, and the twelve mutations. The two test-side gaps I named there are also still open — the vacuous whole-JSON arm and the unwitnessed 64 MiB refusal.

Re-gate on #2371 at exact head 0fef15bdf36fb5d039148442140fa164c5dd5cf2. My HOLD at d31e6688 (review 5596727472) is the baseline.

GATE: PASS on #2371's own delta. All three HOLD items are closed, and one of the three is closed better than I specified. One scope boundary matters and is stated at the end.

Scoped deliberately, because this branch carries #2374. 57455ecd (#2374's head) is an ancestor of this head, so I gated 57455ecd..0fef15bd — four commits, eleven files, +771/−19 — rather than reading the combined diff and re-litigating a PR I have already passed. The combined view would have shown #2374's rebase as if it were this change.

Item 1 — shedding, the ruled item. Closed, with the mechanism the ruling allows. TASK-251's shape ruling said the PR picks how a seat sheds marked ids, "either a fresh session on a provider change or stripping for every upstream as magpie does, and tests it". You took the first: getSession(agentName, podId, { binding }) returns null when the stored binding differs, and performRun derives it as a sha256 over the provider's id, baseURL and keyFile for the opencode adapter. A seat that leaves Gemini therefore starts a fresh session, and no marked id from the old history reaches the new upstream.

The arm is the discriminating shape rather than the easy one: three runs — Gemini, another provider, that same provider again — asserting [null, null, 'session-2']. The third element is what makes it a property instead of a tautology, because it separates "reset on change" from "reset always". Disabling the binding check reddens it, and so does dropping baseURL from the hash, so the arm drives a real URL change rather than an id change.

Worth recording as intended behaviour rather than a defect: a session row written before this change carries no binding, so undefined !== hash resets every opencode seat's session once on upgrade. That is the correct direction — the pre-upgrade rows are exactly the ones that may hold marked ids.

Item 2 — the whole-JSON arm is no longer vacuous. Making the non-SSE branch return the body unrewritten reddens one arm, and forcing sse true so the branch is never taken reddens one too. So the non-streaming reply path is exercised for real, in both the "it rewrites" and "it is reached" directions.

Item 3 — the 64 MiB refusal is witnessed. Disabling size > SIGNED_REQUEST_MAX_BYTES reddens one arm. The refusal is also the right shape for a buffered path: it sets refused, destroys the upstream request, answers 413, and the end handler returns early rather than signing a truncated body.

A residual I checked and will not name as one. The binding is computed only for adapter?.name === 'opencode', so an adapter switch yields null — "do not check" — and would hand a stored opencode session id to another adapter. That is already closed upstream of here: #2098 refuses a mismatched --adapter outright and names the binding, so the switch cannot reach getSession at all. Checked rather than assumed, and nothing to do.

Suites. The three touched suites: 177 passed. Full cli at this head: 1,187 passed; at 57455ecd as the control: 1,167 — so +20, and the same six suites fail to run on both (Cannot find module 'commander' from a borrowed node_modules, machine-local). Product tree restored to a315105c after every mutation. One mutation of mine was syntactically invalid on the first cut and made the suite report 0 total rather than a red arm; I re-cut it valid before drawing any conclusion.

The scope boundary, which bears on the merge order. This branch carries #2374 at 57455ecd, and my clearance on #2374 names ea403936 (review 5597855246). #2374 has been rebased since: it now has two commits and ea403936..57455ecd spans 131 files, which is main's intervening work. So 57455ecd is an ungated head. Nothing in this verdict clears it, and since the stated merge order is #2374 first, that PR needs its own re-gate at its current head before it goes in. My gate here is the 57455ecd..0fef15bd delta on top of whatever #2374 turns out to be.

TASK-251, ruling (B) full fidelity. Gemini 3 signs the tool calls of each step
and refuses the next request without the signature back on the call ("Function
call is missing a thought_signature … position 2"). Its OpenAI-compatible API
returns the signature in tool_calls[].extra_content.google.thought_signature,
and OpenCode's @ai-sdk/openai-compatible provider drops it, so every Gemini 3
OpenCode seat failed on its second request (walked 2026-10-19; reproduced as
the control today on CLI 0.1.108).

- gemini-signatures.js (new): the proxy gives the client a call id carrying a
  16-character reference, `<id>__cmts16__<key>`, keeps the signature in a
  per-seat store (memory, plus 0600 files under a 0700 dir), and on the next
  request strips the reference and puts the signature back in extra_content.
  A step with no recoverable signature gets Google's documented
  `skip_thought_signature_validator`; in a signed step only the signed call
  carries one. Streamed replies are rewritten line by line, decoded across
  chunk boundaries; every other line passes byte for byte. The approach is
  magpie's (yetone/magpie at a9304efe, MIT); this is a separate JavaScript
  implementation, with magpie's notice and credit in the file.
- provider-proxy.js: an optional `signatureStore` turns the round trip on for
  chat/completions (request buffered, capped at 64 MiB; reply requested
  uncompressed). Without one, every request and reply is piped through as
  before.
- opencode.js: a provider on Gemini's OpenAI-compatible host goes through the
  proxy on any seat, private included, with its store at
  ~/.commonly/gemini-signatures/<seat hash>.
- docs/cli/opencode.md: Gemini is walked; settings and the version floor.

Walk on the branch (private seat, OpenCode 1.19.3, gemini-3.8-flash, key from
SM in a 0600 file, deleted after): control on CLI 0.1.108 → 400 missing
thought_signature; branch → "This pod is CTO BYO walk, and 31 × 37 is 1147."
posted via the Commonly tool; turn 2 on the resumed session → "The number I gave
last time was 1147, and plus 3 it is 1150." Turn 1's two signature files were
read back from disk during turn 2's fresh spawn.

Re-stamp on #2371 at exact head f9c3331fe49fe200b358cb2a5559d8eab949a04f. My PASS at 0fef15bd (review 5606122390) is the baseline.

GATE: PASS. The tree-identity claim holds, and it is the strongest form a rebase re-stamp can take.

git rev-parse <head>^{tree} is a315105c7c1e9534e17afbbb47795a6667273d04 at both heads. Every tracked byte at this head is a byte I already measured, so the baseline's findings do not merely "carry" — they are claims about this exact content. That is why I did not re-run the full set: with the tree hash equal, a suite run is determined by it, and the only remaining input is my own environment rather than anything in the PR.

What a tree hash does not settle is ancestry, so I checked that separately. main is now 0b36d24a, #2374's squash, and it is an ancestor of this head. The four commits above it are kai's own. git diff main..head is exactly the eleven files and +771/−19 I gated as 57455ecd..0fef15bd — so dropping #2374's two commits did not leave a double application. Specifically: public-tool-error.js is byte-identical between main and this head (4191c2fe), i.e. #2374's file comes from the squash and is not re-applied; opencode.js differs (55db8b2b on main, 6d8789fe here) because #2371 adds its own sixteen lines on top, which is what I gated.

The version chain is intact, checked against npm rather than only against the base. head 0.1.120 over main's 0.1.119 is an increase, and package-lock.json agrees in both its version and packages[""].version. On the registry: 0.1.119 is now published and dist-tags.latest is 0.1.119, matching main — so the mismatch that Package Version Guard exists to prevent is closed for #2374 — and 0.1.120 is not published, so this PR's number is free.

Two confirmations rather than a re-run. The three touched suites pass at this head (177, the same count as at 0fef15bd). And one tripwire mutation, to prove the arms are live on this tree rather than assuming it: disabling the session-binding check reddens the provider-change arm (1 failed / 95). Product tree restored to a315105c after it.

Nothing further is outstanding from the baseline: all three HOLD items stayed closed, and the residual I checked there (an adapter switch reaching getSession) is still closed upstream by #2098's mismatched---adapter refusal.
