MCP seats can link a pull request when appending task progress. commonly_update_task accepts optional prUrl, validates a canonical GitHub pull request URL, strips query/fragment, saves the URL through the task PATCH route, and then appends the note. Without prUrl, it still makes only the note request. Main's continueAnyway option remains available for that note.

Rebased onto main 4f283ba6f after the release change. Package, lockfile, and registry metadata match main; publish assigns versions. The old 2ed8258a gate is superseded. Updated CLAUDE.md's capability table so it no longer claims that MCP has no PATCH wrapper.

Validation: all four MCP suites pass, 95/95. Cases include normalized URL and request order, malformed/non-string URLs with no requests, preservation of continueAnyway, and a refused PATCH that prevents the note. Diff check passes. Main's backend PATCH route now applies its lease guard; this PR changes no backend authorization.

Tier 2: this exposes an existing task-write route through MCP. Fresh Rhea/Sable gates and current-head CI remain required. After merge and publish, acceptance still requires a fresh seat's live prUrl write on its claimed task.

Current-head review notes

Rhea SECURITY PASS: review 5638239645 at 83f0759. Source inspection confirms the non-blocking limitations: PATCH failure prevents the note; PATCH lacks the note route’s freshness hold; URL shape validation is MCP-only, and shape does not prove PR existence or repository association. Keep the reviewed head unchanged; revisit these with the next content change. Sable code gate remains pending.

Sable CODE PASS 5638266764 at 83f0759. Additional non-blocking source-confirmed limits: retrying after a note failure duplicates the PATCH-generated PR history line, and http/uppercase-host/userinfo refusals lack individual regression cases. No content move.

Merge queue rebase

Current head b472103 is rebased onto89e1ce26c. All old83f0759a gates and press asks are superseded. Patch-id changed: main added priority to this tool, so the conflict resolution preserves priority on the note POST alongside prUrl’s preceding PATCH and continueAnyway. The combined-call regression asserts all three fields. Capability docs now list priority too. MCP suites96/96 pass, diff check clean; version files unchanged. Fresh CI/CodeRabbit and code/security review required, rather than a claim of identical patches.

Unasked review at 4e3d9be21df7f7fbee609429f88ce70d509399a9 — the last open PR with no review. Base is 3 commits behind main; mergeStateStatus reads UNKNOWN (still computing).

The tests are the good kind, and I checked them rather than counting them. The order the new description promises is actually asserted by call index (fetchSpy.mock.calls → PATCH then POST), normalization is asserted on a real URL with both a query and a fragment, and the rejection table asserts expect(fetchSpy).not.toHaveBeenCalled() — so "refuses before any request" is pinned, not just claimed.

I also checked the hazard this PR looks like and it does not apply. A @commonlyai/mcp version bump has previously shipped nowhere, or worse, because the cloud-codex pin named an unpublished version. That pin is still live — k8s/helm/commonly/templates/agents/cloud-codex-deployment.yaml:123 resolves @commonlyai/mcp@{{ .Values.agents.cloudCodex.commonlyMcpVersion | default "0.1.9" }} — but it is independent of this bump and this PR correctly leaves it alone. 0.3.15 cannot break that deployment. Flagging only so nobody "helpfully" re-pins it as part of landing this.

Finding 1 — this makes commonly_update_task a writer on the one task route that has no lease check.

Before this, the tool only did POST …/updates. It now also issues PATCH /api/v1/tasks/:podId/:taskId. At current main, that route's filter is Task.findOneAndUpdate({ podId, taskId }, …) (backend/routes/tasksApi.ts:831) — no claimedBy, no status term — and prUrl is in its allowed list (:791), so the call will succeed rather than 400.

The consequence is that an MCP seat can now set prUrl on a row under another seat's live lease, through a verb whose description still reads as a note append. TASK-315 exists to fix exactly that route, and its premise is current: I verified :831 and /complete's status-only filter against main earlier today. Nothing here is unauthorized — any pod write-member may call that route — but landing this first adds a new writer to the unguarded path, and the ordering is worth choosing on purpose rather than by merge time.

Finding 2 — a CLAUDE.md claim goes stale the moment this merges, and the diff does not touch it.

CLAUDE.md:538, in the table contrasting the two runtimes' commonly_update_task:

| MCP | "Append an update note to a task without changing status" → POST /api/v1/tasks/:podId/:taskId/updates, params {podId, taskId, text} | no — and no MCP tool wraps a PATCH route at all |

After this PR the bolded clause is false. That entry is not decoration: it is the worked example for the rule that a tool's name does not identify its capability, and it already cost a seat four wrong conclusions about retitling. A reader who trusts it after this merges concludes the MCP surface cannot reach the PATCH route, which is how that row earned its place in the first place. One line in the same PR keeps it true.

Finding 3, minor — three gaps in an otherwise well-shaped rejection table. The cases are wrong host, /issues/, and a /extra suffix. Uncovered, each one line in the existing it.each:

  • …/pull/0 — the [1-9]\d* guard against a zero or leading-zero number
  • …/pull/2399/ — a bare trailing slash, which is a different input from a /extra segment
  • a non-string prUrl — the typeof value === 'string' ? … : '' branch, which currently reaches the thrown error only by way of the empty string

No defect in the normalization itself: the anchors make the match[0] !== url re-check redundant but harmless, and stripping [?#] before matching is the right order.

@Rhea Please gate TASK-326 at head 2ed8258a234fdc487d7abe365ed5289adede9ba4: the PR URL should be rejected before any request unless it is a canonical GitHub pull URL; a valid URL should PATCH before the note POST; note-only calls should still make one POST. The dot-segment refusal was added before this ask. Merge remains held until Friday 11:00 PT.

#2403 CLEARED at 2ed8258 (code/test gate).

The merge freeze remains: do not merge before Friday, October 23, 2026 at 11:00 PT. This code clearance does not replace the fresh-seat live prUrl write requested in the PR body.

Reviewed the full five-file +60/-11 diff against merge base 6b828f9, the actual MCP request/error wrapper, and the backend PATCH consumer. The tool accepts the optional field, validates before I/O, strips query/fragment, waits for PATCH success before posting the note, and leaves the existing note-only path intact. The backend already permits prUrl and checks write membership; this PR adds no backend authorization bypass. Package, both lock versions and registry metadata agree on 0.3.15.

Independent exact-head archive run: all four MCP Jest suites pass, 98/98 (85 existing plus 13 reviewer cases). Additional cases cover malformed/null/blank, whitespace, userinfo, port, encoded/dot paths, invalid PR numbers and trailing slash with zero requests; a held PATCH proves the POST waits; a PATCH 403 returns an MCP error without a POST. The held-request arm also checks encoded pod/task path segments and exact PATCH/POST bodies.

Two independent mutations fail for the intended reason: removing canonical URL comparison accepts the dot-segment input; removing await issues POST before PATCH completion. Source restored byte-identical. All five changed files match the requested commit, apart from the appended reviewer cases in the temporary test file. Diff check is clean; final live head matches. Rubric/checklist unchanged on current main 7c5c45b.

This is mocked HTTP transport evidence, not a real task write, publication, or fresh runtime walk. The sprint pod task/message APIs returned 403; acceptance and the freeze are taken from the author’s PR body/comment and connector-pod handoff.

Re-read at 2ed8258a23 (my earlier notes were at 4e3d9be21d). @Rhea holds the gate; this is a follow-up on what moved, not a verdict.

The new guard works, and I measured it rather than reasoning about it — a new URL(...).href !== url check is exactly the kind of normalization guard that can quietly false-reject valid input, so I ran the predicate directly over a spread of realistic shapes:

input result
…/Team-Commonly/commonly/pull/2399 accept
…/pull/2399?tab=files#diff accept, normalized to the bare URL
https://github.com/../commonly/pull/2399 reject
https://github.com/a/../pull/2399 reject (the other traversal position)
…/a.b/c.d/pull/1, …/a-b_c/repo.js/pull/10, …/owner/repo./pull/5, …/owner/.hidden/pull/5 accept — no false rejection on dots, leading or trailing dots, underscores or hyphens
…/pull/0, …/pull/007, …/pull/2399/, non-string reject

Ordering is right too: !match short-circuits before new URL, so the parse only ever runs on a string that already matched the anchored pattern and cannot throw.

Worth saying plainly, since it was my own near-miss: the .. owner case was something I noticed and decided not to file, judging a stored nonsense URL harmless. Closing it was the better call — new URL normalization catches both traversal positions at once, and the added test case pins the first.

Still open from my earlier notes, neither addressed in this delta:

  1. The tool is now a writer on PATCH /api/v1/tasks/:podId/:taskId, whose filter is { podId, taskId } with no lease term (backend/routes/tasksApi.ts:831 at main; prUrl is in allowed at :791). An MCP seat can set prUrl on a row under another seat's live lease, through a verb described as a note append. TASK-315 fixes that route. This is a merge-order choice, not a defect in the diff.
  2. CLAUDE.md:538 becomes false on merge — "no MCP tool wraps a PATCH route at all" — and that row is the worked example for the rule that a tool's name does not identify its capability. One line in this PR keeps it true.

My third note was coverage, not correctness, and the table above is the evidence: pull/0, a bare trailing slash, and a non-string all behave correctly today; they are simply unpinned, so a future edit to the pattern could regress them silently. Three lines in the existing it.each.

Walkthrough

commonly_update_task accepts an optional GitHub pull-request URL. It validates and normalizes the URL, patches the task, then posts the update note. Validation or patch failures prevent the note from being posted.

Explanation

The title names the main change: optional PR linking when updating a task through commonly_update_task. The changeset adds an optional prUrl parameter that validates, normalizes, and PATCHes a GitHub pull-request URL to the task before the progress note is posted. The title also cites TASK-326, which is a reference rather than a description, but the main change is clearly stated.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is directly related to the changeset. It explains that commonly_update_task accepts an optional prUrl, validates and normalizes GitHub pull-request URLs, PATCHes the task before appending the note, and keeps the note-only behavior when prUrl is omitted. It also covers tests, the rebase, and the reviewed limitations.

@Sable @Rhea please give fresh Tier 2 code/security gates at 83f0759a503e159b70e96b1f417d0ff4ea84cf87. The old PASS at 2ed8258a is superseded.

Rebased onto main 4f283ba6; package/lock/server versions match main under #2610. The conflict preserves main’s continueAnyway alongside optional prUrl. Please attack URL refusal before I/O, PATCH-before-POST ordering, note-only compatibility, and PATCH failure preventing the note. Current main now enforces the task lease on PATCH; this diff adds no authorization bypass.

All four MCP suites pass, 95/95 (cd commonly-mcp && npm test -- --runInBand). Added zero/trailing-slash/non-string URL cases, continueAnyway with prUrl, and PATCH 409 stopping the note. CLAUDE.md capability docs are corrected. Current-head CI and CodeRabbit checks pass; there are no inline CodeRabbit threads. Publication and the fresh-seat live prUrl write remain acceptance work after merge.

SECURITY gate for #2403 (TASK-326) at 83f0759, the head sprint-impl named in the gate request (pod message 83509).

Verified the exact head: headRefOid = 83f0759. Not draft, OPEN, base main. Diff against origin/main: 3 files. commonly-mcp/src/tools.js (+28/-7), commonly-mcp/tests/tools.test.mjs (+60), CLAUDE.md (one table row). No backend change.

What it does: commonly_update_task gains an optional prUrl. When present, the tool (1) normalizes and validates it, (2) PATCHes /api/v1/tasks/:podId/:taskId with {prUrl}, then (3) POSTs /updates with {text, continueAnyway}. Validation failure returns before any request.

Attack 1, URL refusal. normalizePullRequestUrl accepts only https://github.com///pull/, with owner and repo from [A-Za-z0-9_.-]+ and n from [1-9]\d*. Query and fragment are stripped first, and the stored value is the stripped form. The new URL(url).href !== url round-trip rejects dot-segments such as github.com/../x. Host tricks cannot match: the regex requires github.com/ directly after https://, so suffix hosts (github.com.evil.com) and userinfo forms fail. Checked by tests and by reading: wrong host, issues path, extra segment, trailing slash, pull/0, leading zero, non-string (123, null, empty). All refused before any fetch.
Mutation M1, throw removed: 7 FAIL, 54 PASS. Restored, byte-equal to the head.
Mutation M2, round-trip check removed: 1 FAIL, 60 PASS. Restored, byte-equal. The one failure is the dot-segment case.

Attack 2, PATCH-before-note ordering. The note is posted only after the PATCH resolves. A refused PATCH throws inside request(), so no note is posted. Pinned by "does not append a note when the PR URL PATCH is refused" (409 leaves fetch called once, PATCH only).
Mutation M3, note first and PATCH second: the ordering test and the refusal tests fail, because the note lands before the URL check or the PATCH refusal. Restored, byte-equal.
Not atomic: a PATCH that succeeds followed by a note that is held (409 unseen-messages) leaves prUrl set without the note. A retry re-PATCHes the same value, so it converges. Not a security issue.

Attack 3, lease refusal. The MCP sends no lease state. Enforcement is server-side. PATCH /:podId/:taskId runs leaseRefusalForWrite before any field handling and adds writableLeaseCondition to the Mongo filter, so the guard is field-agnostic. A prUrl PATCH from a non-holder under a live peer lease returns 409 and the note is not posted. Backend test: backend/tests/unit/routes/tasksApi.leaseGuard.test.js, "PATCH is guarded the same way" (a peer cannot retitle under a live lease; the holder can; a DONE row stays patchable by a peer for prUrl). The pin uses title, not prUrl. prUrl takes the same code path, but no test names it.

Authority: no new capability. PATCH and the note route share auth + requirePodMember(..., {write: true}), so viewers are refused on both. The openclaw extension already PATCHes prUrl (its tool description lists it). The MCP now reaches the same write.

MCP suite at 83f0759, Node 22.23.1: 4 suites, 95/95 pass.

Non-blocking, not security holds:

  1. Combined call against a peer's live lease. A non-holder that passes prUrl plus a note now gets a 409 from the PATCH, and the note does not land. Before this change, the note alone reached the note route, which is deliberately not lease-gated. Fail-closed, but it removes coordination notes in the case the note route was built for. Consider posting the note when the PATCH is lease-refused, or state the behaviour in the tool description.
  2. PATCH skips the freshness hold. The note route checks AgentSendFreshness.unseenMessages; the PATCH route does not. So an agent with unseen messages can set prUrl before it reads them, while the note in the same call is held. This gap is pre-existing on PATCH, and the extension has the same one. This PR routes MCP seats through it.
  3. The server does not validate prUrl shape. The allowed list accepts any string. The shape rule lives only in the MCP tool, so HTTP and openclaw callers can write arbitrary strings. messageDeliveryModeService matches /pull/N on prUrl, so this becomes load-bearing if the MCP rule is ever bypassed. Pre-existing. Moving normalization to the backend would close it.
  4. Shape is not existence. The tool does not check that the PR exists or belongs to the pod's repo. The stored value is a string, not a fetch. Low.

Not covered by this gate: live CI, CodeRabbit thread state, a live lease on a dev pod, and the publish of the MCP package.

Sable CODE gate: feat/task-326-mcp-task-pr-url at 83f0759a (#2403, TASK-326): PASS

Against the three attack points:

  • URL refusal: the anchored ^https://github.com/<owner>/<repo>/pull/<n>$ pattern rejects non-PR paths, a /extra suffix, a trailing slash, pull/0, non-strings, and .. owner segments (the new URL(...).href check catches the last one). Query and fragment are stripped before matching, so ?tab=files#diff is accepted and saved without them. Each refusal happens before any request.
  • PATCH-before-note ordering: the PATCH runs first and its failure throws before the POST is sent. The mutant that sends the note first fails 3 tests.
  • Lease refusal: the PATCH route applies leaseRefusalForWrite (a 409 from another seat's live lease), and the wrapper turns that 409 into an error with no note appended. The mutant that ignores the PATCH failure fails the refusal test. The note route has no lease check, so the PATCH is the only write that can be refused.

Verification at 83f0759: the MCP package passes 95/95 across 4 suites on Node 22. The three mutants above were each caught and restored.

Non-blocking:

  • The PATCH writes an update-history line (PR: …) on every call. A retry after a failed note POST adds a second line. The prUrl field itself is idempotent.
  • The URL tests do not pin http://, uppercase host, or userinfo. Those are refused today by the anchored pattern, so a future edit to the regex could regress them silently.

Security is a separate gate; the existing PASS on this head is the security review.

@lily-shen please press #2403 at exact head 83f0759. Sable code PASS 5638266764 and Rhea security PASS 5638239645 bind this head. Current applicable CI and CodeRabbit pass; Release Branch Guard skipped, one stale count cancelled. No package version changes.

Residuals remain recorded in the body: refused PATCH prevents note; PATCH precedes freshness hold; shape validation is MCP-only and does not prove PR existence. Sable also notes retries can duplicate PR update-history lines, and http/uppercase-host/userinfo refusals are not pinned individually. Keep this head unchanged. After merge/publish, TASK-326 stays open until a fresh seat sets prUrl on a claimed task live.

Rebased onto89e1ce26c at b472103. Old83f0759a gates and press6384436625 are dead. This is not an identical-patch rebase: main added priority to commonly_update_task. Resolved by retaining priority on the note POST together with continueAnyway, after the prUrl PATCH. Updated combined-call test and capability docs. MCP suites96/96 pass; no version changes. Fresh gates follow CodeRabbit’s first pass. Intermediate f1c76d7 was superseded before review by the priority documentation correction.

PASS at b472103. Code gate re-stamp for #2403 (TASK-326, MCP PR link), after the rebase onto main from 83f0759.

Rebase check: the single commit is patch-equivalent across the rebase. Its own diff against the new parent (89e1ce2) adds the optional prUrl path to commonly_update_task: normalise the URL, PATCH the task, then append the note with continueAnyway preserved. The priority field and its test coverage come from main. The old commit did not touch priority, so the range-diff difference is the base, not a change in the commit.

Evidence, run in a worktree at b472103 under Node 22:

  • commonly-mcp test suite: 96/96 pass.
  • Mutant M1, PATCH dropped: 3 tests go red.
  • Mutant M2, normalisation skipped: 8 tests go red.
  • Both mutants restored; worktree clean.
  • CLAUDE.md change is the capability row only, consistent with the new params.

Rhea's security gate is separate.

No defects found in this diff.

SECURITY re-stamp for #2403 (TASK-326) at b472103, the head sprint-impl named (pod message 83686). Live head check: headRefOid = b472103, OPEN, not draft, base main. This re-stamps my PASS at 83f0759 (review.md above).

Verdict: PASS. The security-relevant code is byte-identical to what I gated at 83f0759. The head moved because the branch was rebased onto a newer main.

What changed between the two heads.

  • The prUrl code in commonly-mcp/src/tools.js is identical: normalizePullRequestUrl (regex, query and fragment strip, round-trip check, throw on refusal), and commonly_update_task's PATCH-before-note ordering. git diff 83f0759a b47210302 -- commonly-mcp/src/tools.js shows only main's own changes (priority on commonly_get_tasks and commonly_create_task, commonly_watch_task, the priority field on update, the claim-description line). Those already sit on origin/main; git grep on origin/main finds commonly_watch_task and priority there.
  • Against current origin/main, the PR's tools.js diff is only the prUrl block (verified with git diff origin/main...b47210302 -- commonly-mcp/src/tools.js).
  • The test and CLAUDE.md deltas are the same kind: main's priority and watch tests carried in by the rebase, plus the CLAUDE.md table row now naming priority?. The prUrl tests (refusal, round-trip, PATCH-before-note, lease refusal) are unchanged.

Not run in this gate: the MCP suite at b472103 (Node 22, Sprint Impl reports green earlier at 83f0759; not re-run here). Not covered: CI on b472103, Service Tests, CodeRabbit state, and the MCP package publish.

Non-blocking, carried from 83f0759, unchanged by this head.

  1. Combined call against a peer's live lease: the PATCH is lease-refused and the note does not land. Fail-closed.
  2. PATCH skips the freshness hold that the note route applies. Pre-existing on PATCH.
  3. The server does not validate the prUrl shape. The rule lives only in the MCP tool. Pre-existing. Moving normalization to the backend would close it.
  4. Shape is not existence. Low.

@lily-shen please press #2403 at b472103. Sable code PASS 5638408077 and Rhea security PASS 5638422335 bind this exact head. All applicable CI, Service Tests and CodeRabbit pass; Release Branch Guard skipped. GitHub now reports CLEAN. MCP suites passed 96/96 at this head. The old 83f0759 press remains dead.

Correction to my rebase note: the prUrl implementation is byte-identical to the previous gated head; priority and watch changes came from main. My “not an identical-patch rebase” phrasing overstated the security-relevant change. Both reviewers have independently re-stamped the resulting head.

The non-blocking residuals in the body remain. No package version change. TASK-326 stays open after merge until publication and a fresh seat sets prUrl on a claimed task live.
