TASK-452

OpenCode now carries Gemini's extra_content.google.thought_signature from a streamed tool call into the continuation request. Remove Commonly's signing shim and its on-disk signature store. A private Gemini seat now uses the provider directly. A Gemini seat with OpenCode older than the tested 1.18.35 floor, or an unknown version, refuses before spawn because trusted seats otherwise continue on untested binaries. The public-seat provider proxy remains for key isolation, and forwards request and response bodies unchanged.

Verification:

  • A local two-turn OpenAI-compatible tool-call fixture against real OpenCode binaries 1.18.35, 1.19.0, and 1.19.4 returned the exact signature in the second request's tool_calls[].extra_content.google.thought_signature, without Commonly's proxy. The fixture used a fake key and loopback server; it was not a live Gemini API call.
  • cli OpenCode adapter suite: 66/66 passed, including direct private Gemini, public provider proxy, and the older/unknown Gemini version refusals.
  • cli lint and git diff --check passed.

Upstream fix: anomalyco/opencode#51768.

Walkthrough

The CLI no longer stores, restores, or rewrites Gemini thought signatures. Private Gemini seats connect directly to the provider. Public-seat provider traffic continues through a local proxy that streams request and response bodies unchanged. Gemini startup checks the OpenCode version.

Changes: Gemini OpenCode routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove signature rewriting from provider proxy
cli/src/lib/gemini-signatures.js, cli/src/lib/provider-proxy.js, cli/__tests__/gemini-signatures.test.mjs, cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs
The CLI removes Gemini signature storage, restoration, and reply rewriting. The provider proxy streams request and response bodies directly. Signature integration tests are deleted, and proxy tests verify byte-for-byte body pass-through.
Route private Gemini seats directly
cli/src/lib/adapters/opencode.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs, docs/cli/opencode.md, cli/package.json
Private Gemini seats use the configured provider URL and key-file credential. Startup rejects Gemini when the OpenCode version is unknown, older than 1.18.35, or a prerelease of that boundary. Public provider seats retain the local proxy. Tests and documentation describe these paths and native signature replay. The CLI package version changes from 0.1.139 to 0.1.144.

Explanation

The changes match the current PR scope. They remove the Gemini signing shim and on-disk signature store, keep public-seat provider proxying, use direct private Gemini access, add the OpenCode 1.18.35 and prerelease or unknown-version refusals, and update focused tests and documentation. The package version change supports the same CLI release. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Add byte-preservation assertions for the public-seat proxy.

The changed proxy has separate request and response pass-through paths. Extend the proxy test with a signature-bearing POST body and assert the exact bytes received upstream. Also assert the exact response bytes received by the client. One focused test with two assertions is proportional because either direction can regress independently.

Add an in-repository regression test for native Gemini signature replay.

The private-seat test only verifies the generated URL and credential configuration. It does not invoke OpenCode or inspect the second request in a tool-call exchange. Add a two-turn fake-provider test that exercises the changed Commonly adapter path and asserts that the second request contains the Gemini signature. Apply the test to both the direct private path and the public provider-proxy path.

A fixture that only runs OpenCode against a fake provider would test OpenCode’s upstream replay behavior, not Commonly’s changed route. The test must invoke the Commonly adapter and observe the request that reaches the provider.

Reject pre-releases below the tested Gemini version.

If OpenCode reports 1.18.35-rc.1, parseOpenCodeVersion accepts it and compareOpenCodeVersions treats it as 1.18.35. The Gemini guard then permits a version that precedes the tested release. Compare pre-release precedence or reject pre-release builds at this floor. Add 1.18.35-rc.1 to the version tests. (semver.org)

Commit an adapter-driven native two-turn replay regression test.

The current tests cover Gemini provider configuration and OpenCode version refusal, but no test sends a Gemini tool-call response through a second turn and asserts the exact thought signature. Run the fixture through Commonly’s OpenCode adapter on the private direct-provider path. A standalone OpenCode fixture would not cover adapter routing.

Otto, gate measured at 952875f7d8a06faf54f1e83b1483cbf52029b3a6.

The requested prerelease refusal is incomplete. compareOpenCodeVersions compares the numeric triplet before prerelease status. For a private Gemini seat reporting OpenCode 1.19.0-rc.1, the new minimum check compares it greater than 1.18.35; the later untested-version branch only warns and continues for private seats. The same is true of 1.18.36-rc.1 and later prereleases. I replayed the exact comparison logic: 1.18.35-rc.1 is refused, while those later prereleases pass the Gemini guard. The new test covers only the former. This leaves a prerelease without the measured native replay guarantee able to reach the provider, contrary to the gate property. Refuse Gemini prereleases before spawn, including ones numerically above the floor, and pin that counterexample in the test.

The diff otherwise removes the signature store and proxy rewrite path, keeps the public key-isolating proxy, and adds byte-preservation coverage for request and reply bodies. Native replay on 1.18.35/1.19.0/1.19.4 is documented as a loopback OpenCode probe, not a live Gemini API walk; this review did not rerun OpenCode locally under the current disk rule. Exact-head CI has zero pending or failing checks, including CLI tests and required Test & Coverage; the PR is clean against current main. This HOLD dies with the head.

Otto, please re-gate #2586 at exact head 0ec9b48ae217f57a5dea0a3d1c4fab4ded3aa7b1.

Your HOLD at 952875f7 was valid. The private Gemini guard now refuses every OpenCode prerelease before spawn, including 1.18.36-rc.1 and 1.19.0-rc.1. Both counterexamples failed before the fix and pass after it. The focused Node 22 suite is 69/69, CLI lint and diff checks pass, and all exact-head CI checks are green. The unrelated needsYouEmail service failure passed on a failed-job rerun at this same head.

Otto, gate measured at 0ec9b48ae217f57a5dea0a3d1c4fab4ded3aa7b1.
This review supersedes my HOLD review 5637233111 at dead head 952875f7d8a06faf54f1e83b1483cbf52029b3a6.

The prerelease escape is closed. The Gemini guard now checks prerelease status before comparing version numbers: 1.18.35-rc.1, 1.18.36-rc.1, and 1.19.0-rc.1 refuse before spawning OpenCode, with an error requiring stable 1.18.35 or later. Older and unknown versions also refuse. Supported stable-version positive paths still spawn. The host override is reached after the Gemini guard, so it cannot bypass this refusal. The amendment changes only the adapter guard and its tests since my HOLD; no other adapter path changed.

At this exact head, the focused OpenCode suite passed 69/69 and CLI lint passed under Node 22. The diff check and trial merge against current main were clean, with no intervening commit touching the changed CLI paths. Exact-head CI has zero pending or failing checks: required Test & Coverage, CLI/MCP/hosted-runtime tests, Service Tests, E2E, and CodeQL are green; GitHub reports CLEAN and the PR is non-draft.

The native replay evidence in the PR body uses real OpenCode 1.18.35, 1.19.0, and 1.19.4 binaries with a loopback Gemini fixture and fake key. It does not establish a live Gemini API exchange. No remaining defect found in the requested property. This PASS dies with the head.

LANE GATE: PASS @ 0ec9b48

Connector lane review, cli/. I checked out the head in its own worktree and ran:

git fetch origin +pull/2586/head
git worktree add --detach <wt> 0ec9b48a
cd cli && node --experimental-vm-modules node_modules/.bin/jest __tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs
-> 1 suite, 69 passed

What I read:

  • adapters/opencode.js at the spawn site. Gemini now needs a stable OpenCode build at or above TESTED_OPENCODE_VERSIONS[0] (1.18.35, the lowest entry), and is refused when the version is unknown or a prerelease. That holds on trusted seats too, so removing the signature shim cannot fall back to the 10-19 second-request 400.
  • compareOpenCodeVersions now ranks a prerelease below its matching stable release, so 1.19.0-beta no longer counts as tested.
  • A grep for gemini-signatures, signatureStore and isGeminiOpenAIUpstream across cli/src and cli/__tests__ finds nothing left, so the deleted module has no orphan importers.
  • The proxy now starts for public seats only, as it did before Gemini was added. Trusted non-Gemini seats are unchanged.

The CLI version is 0.1.144, which collides with no open PR I am tracking.

Non-blocking: the old host check wrapped new URL() in a try. This one throws a URL error on a malformed baseURL. Since such a provider fails at spawn anyway, it is a clearer-error follow-up, not a hold.

Otto, please re-stamp the code gate at exact head 657107abf860e347544b2109c5c85dc46de89211 after this rebase onto a70b928e.

The code and test patch is unchanged from your PASS at 0ec9b48ae217f57a5dea0a3d1c4fab4ded3aa7b1. Excluding cli/package.json and cli/package-lock.json, the stable patch hash before and after is 2e5f1720f244271054f974366a34b78b4a3ab1d3. Range-diff shows only the package version change and commit credit trailers. The conflict was confined to the three package version fields, now 0.1.153, checked against main and every open PR changing cli/package.json.

Re-ran with Node 22: OpenCode suite 69/69, CLI lint, and git diff --check pass. Fresh CI is running. The cli lane review also needs its stamp on this head.

Otto, gate measured at 657107abf860e347544b2109c5c85dc46de89211.

This review supersedes PASS 5637518763, pinned to dead head 0ec9b48ae217f57a5dea0a3d1c4fab4ded3aa7b1 (which corrected and superseded 5637518347). The earlier prerelease HOLD 5637233111 at 952875f7d8a06faf54f1e83b1483cbf52029b3a6 remains superseded.

Checked out the stated head and compared each branch's net patch against its own merge base. Excluding cli/package.json and cli/package-lock.json, both stable patch IDs are 2e5f1720f244271054f974366a34b78b4a3ab1d3. git range-diff confirms the source/test/doc patches are preserved through the rebase. No intervening main commit touches those six non-package paths. The net package diff changes only the three version fields, all consistently 0.1.153, above main's 0.1.147. A paginated scan of all 62 open PRs found no other added CLI version line claiming 0.1.153; the package version guard also passes.

The original fix still holds: private Gemini rejects unknown/older OpenCode and every prerelease, including 1.18.36-rc.1 and 1.19.0-rc.1, before spawn. This guard precedes the host override. Supported stable positive paths remain covered. Private Gemini uses the provider directly, the public key-isolating proxy preserves request/reply bytes, and no reference to the deleted signature-store module remains in CLI. No remaining defect found in the requested property.

Commands run at this head under Node 22:

  • npm test -- --runInBand --watchAll=false --runTestsByPath __tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs in cli: 69/69 passed.
  • npm run lint in cli: passed.
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD: clean.
  • git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main HEAD: clean; current base equals main a70b928e04ef9390deb6df05a15e9bfef66b33f6.
  • git patch-id --stable, git range-diff, git log over the changed paths, JSON checks of all version fields, and paginated open-PR file reads establish the rebase/version comparison above.

Exact-head CI is complete with zero pending or failing checks: required Test & Coverage, Service Tests, CLI/MCP/hosted-runtime tests, all backend shards, frontend, version guard and CodeQL are green. The cancelled non-required count job belongs to the thread-count workflow run 40085214407; a later successful issue-comment run 40085221853 publishes coderabbit-threads: success on this exact PR head (all threads answered). GitHub reports MERGEABLE/non-draft and UNSTABLE while retaining that cancelled check. Verified with gh pr checks, paginated commits/<sha>/check-runs, commits/<sha>/status, and both run records. No E2E check was reported.

The native replay evidence remains a loopback fixture using real OpenCode 1.18.35, 1.19.0 and 1.19.4 binaries with a fake key. The local suite mocks process spawning and does not establish a live Gemini API exchange. This PASS dies with the head.

Rebased onto main 3a1b7c34 after #2558 merged. New exact head: 0ed8ee9ed30e42500ed5779dd8aa608bfa03acd7, retaining CLI 0.1.154.

Range-diff from a70b928e..76df1cf8 to 3a1b7c34..0ed8ee9e preserves every non-package commit patch. The non-package net stable hash remains 2e5f1720f244271054f974366a34b78b4a3ab1d3; only package-version base context changed. Node 22 OpenCode tests pass 69/69, CLI lint and git diff --check pass. Fresh CI follows this push. Otto's code PASS carries by Lily's version/rebase ruling; the cli lane stamp is pending.

cli lane review at 0ed8ee9 (cli 0.1.154).

  • With cli/package*.json excluded, the stable patch-id is 2e5f1720f244271054f974366a34b78b4a3ab1d3 at both 76df1cf (otto's CODE PASS) and this head, so otto's PASS carries.
  • The change retires the Gemini thought-signature proxy shim (gemini-signatures.js, 277 lines, and its proxy hook) and relies on OpenCode's native signature replay instead. A Gemini upstream is now refused unless the installed OpenCode is a stable release at or above TESTED_OPENCODE_VERSIONS[0]. Prereleases sort below their stable release, so a matching prerelease can't inherit the guarantee. Failing closed is the right default for removing a shim.
  • Trusted Gemini seats no longer go through the provider proxy. Public seats still always do.

Non-blocking: the Gemini check calls new URL(provider.baseURL) directly. The old isGeminiOpenAIUpstream caught a malformed baseURL, so a bad URL now throws a TypeError at spawn instead of being treated as not Gemini. That's arguably better, but the error text won't say which config is wrong.

No CodeRabbit threads are unanswered. Press order: this PR (0.1.154), then #2602 (0.1.155).

GATE: PASS
