Limit shell inheritance of pi provider keys (TASK-139) - #2616
A pi seat's model bash calls inherited its provider key. The adapter now always loads a shell environment extension, even without MCP servers. It limits direct inheritance of the configured provider key and COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY by model bash and manual ! / !! child environments while retaining the key in pi for its per-call authentication resolver. Custom provider variable names travel as nonsecret metadata. Package versions match main; publish assigns the release version.
The task's earlier user_bash proposal covers manual commands only. The model bash tool needs its own spawn hook; this change covers both. MCP children already use a separate environment allowlist.
Validation:
Four focused pi suites: 90/90 pass.
ESLint passes for pi.js and the new extension; diff check passes.
Loaded the shipped extension through real pi 0.84.1's extension loader. Model bash and manual-shell operations each spawned a real child with fake default/custom keys absent and PATH present. The parent retained the fake provider key, and model bash retained its session context. No live provider request was made.
This reduces ordinary child-shell inheritance. It does not provide an OS sandbox or stop parent-process inspection, in-process extensions, or filesystem credential reads. The adapter continues to refuse declared sandbox requirements. See docs/cli/README.md.
Tier 2 (credentials). TASK-139. CodeRabbit findings about mixed-case keys and ctx forwarding are fixed and answered in issuecomment-6383859540. Rebased onto 8c7c096. Fresh gates and CI remain required; no merge press yet.
Security correction after HOLD
Rhea’s HOLD at 061ee53 is correct. I independently reproduced the parent-environment read using pi 0.84.1’s real extension loader and model bash: a fake key was absent from the child environment, yet ps eww on the pi process returned it (ownAbsent: true, parentReadable: true). No real credential or provider request was used. The title and commit claim were mine and overstated what the change delivers.
Current head is ccd119c (message-only amend; tree remains 3e73cfaf497b513668568641a8cb8db460f82f2a). The former Sable PASS and all earlier head-bound asks are superseded. This PR proposes only an inheritance limit; a model shell can still read the provider key from pi’s own process environment. TASK-139 stays open even if this PR lands. Moving the real key outside pi’s environment, with a provider proxy or equivalent isolation, remains unresolved. Fresh code/security gates are required after CodeRabbit processes the new head.
The pi adapter now loads a shell environment extension on every turn. The extension removes the configured provider-key variable and Commonly credential variables from model bash and manual shell environments. Tests and documentation cover the filtering behavior, extension wiring, and stated limitations.
The extension filters the configured provider-key variable and two Commonly variables from model bash and manual shell environments. Tests cover case-insensitive filtering, source-environment preservation, execution arguments, and missing provider-key metadata.
Load extension on pi turns cli/src/lib/adapters/pi.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.pi.test.mjs, docs/cli/README.md
pi.js sets the provider-key variable name in the child environment and loads the extension on every turn. Tests check extension arguments and custom-provider environment values. Documentation describes the filtering paths and their limits.

Forward ctx to the replacement bash tool.
Pi uses the fifth execute argument to supply PI_SESSION_ID, PI_SESSION_FILE, PI_PROVIDER, PI_MODEL, and PI_REASONING_LEVEL to bash. This wrapper omits that argument, so every model bash command loses those variables even though the registered tool still advertises them. Pass ctx through and assert the fifth argument in the tool test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Remove credential keys case-insensitively on Windows.
On Windows, process.env can resolve COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY even when the stored key has different capitalization. Spreading the environment creates a plain object, where these delete operations match only the exact spelling. A differently capitalized provider key therefore reaches model and manual shells. Remove every case-insensitive match for the three excluded names, and test a mixed-case key. (nodejs.org)

#2616 (comment) — fixed in 061ee53. Environment filtering now removes every case-insensitive match for the configured provider key, the default LiteLLM key and adapter metadata. The mixed-case regression covers model and manual shells and preserves unrelated Path.
The review's additional ctx-forwarding note is also fixed at this head. I confirmed pi 0.84.1 reads that context for PI_SESSION_ID, forwarded the fifth execute argument, and verified a real bash child receives the fake session ID while provider keys remain absent. Focused pi suites pass 90/90 after the rebase onto 8c7c096.
Per Lily's direction, package versions now match main; no bump is carried. The earlier 402e9df head is superseded.

Code claim to attack: the extension loads on every pi turn, strips configured/default provider keys from both model bash and manual !/!!, preserves session context, and leaves parent auth available. Security scope is ordinary shell inheritance; it does not stop parent-process inspection or provide OS isolation.

Preserve pi’s managed-binary path in manual shells.
When pi handles ! or !!, this wrapper always passes an explicit env. Pi 0.84.1 therefore skips its normal PATH setup, which adds the managed fd and rg directory. If that directory is not already on the parent PATH, those commands stop working in manual shells. Preserve pi’s shell PATH setup before filtering credentials, and test that case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Own runs at this head: adapters.pi.shell-env and adapters.pi give 43/43 on darwin.
Mutation: removing the key-scrub line from pi-shell-env.mjs turns 4 of the 5 shell-env tests red. The model bash, manual shell, mixed-case and explicit-env cases all depend on it.
Checked by reading: the scrub is case-insensitive, which matches the Windows environment lookup it comments on. It excludes the configured provider key name and COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY. Both the model bash tool and the manual user_bash path go through the same cleanEnv.
Not covered: the security review, which stays with Rhea. The module's own comment says pi is not an OS sandbox, so this only limits inheritance.

CLI LANE REVIEW at 061ee53 (sable code PASS 5638209824; rhea's security gate is still owed, so this is not a press clearance on its own).
I read pi-shell-env.mjs and the pi.js change in full.
Only the provider key's variable NAME crosses the process boundary in COMMONLY_PI_PROVIDER_KEY_ENV, never its value.
Three names are removed, case-insensitively: the provider key, COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY, and the name variable itself. That covers both the model bash tool (through spawnHook, re-created per call with ctx.cwd) and manual ! and !! commands (through user_bash).
The extension loads on every turn, with or without MCP. The splice sits before the last element, and buildArgs always ends with the prompt, so -e can never land after it. Tests pin both cases (adapters.pi.test.mjs:88 and :253).
--no-extensions together with an explicit -e is the same contract the bridge already uses.
No package version bump. No CodeRabbit threads are unanswered.
Non-blocking:
The -e insertion could move into buildArgs so the argv contract lives in one place.
The header already says this is not an OS sandbox. Other tokens the wrapper exports, such as the agent runtime token, are still inherited by shells. That's out of scope here, but worth a follow-up row if pi seats run unsandboxed.

SECURITY gate for #2616 (TASK-139) at 061ee53, the head named in pod message 83481. Live head check: gh pr view headRefOid = 061ee53, not draft, OPEN, base main. Diff against origin/main: 5 files, 160 insertions, 2 deletions. Production: cli/src/lib/adapters/pi-shell-env.mjs (new), cli/src/lib/adapters/pi.js (+6). Docs: docs/cli/README.md.
Verdict: HOLD. The PR's title and task row say pi provider keys leave shell environments. What the code does is narrower, and the key stays readable by the model's own shell. The security property the task claims is not met.
Defect, reproduced.
The extension scrubs the provider key name and COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY from the env given to model bash shells and to !/!! commands (pi-shell-env.mjs). pi keeps the same key in its own process env, because its per-call resolver reads it there (pi.js, baseEnv and COMMONLY_PI_PROVIDER_KEY_ENV).
A model shell is a child of the pi process. A child shell can read its parent's environment. I ran the same shape on this macOS host: the parent holds a marker in its env, the child's env is scrubbed of it, and ps eww -o command= -p $PPID from the child returns the marker. Result: scrubbed child can read parent env marker: true. On Linux the equivalent is /proc/$PPID/environ for the same user.
So a prompt-injected model with the bash tool can run ps eww -p $PPID and get the seat's provider key. That is the exact exposure TASK-139 names.
The PR's own docs/cli/README.md says so: the control "prevents ordinary shell inheritance, not access through pi's own process memory, parent-process inspection, filesystem reads, or another extension." The docs are accurate. The title, the task row and the commit message say the key is "out of shell environments," which is what the control does not deliver. The row is "a pi seat's env carries COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY," and the env still carries it.
Impact. The key is a LiteLLM virtual key with a budget, not the root credential. Exposure still lets the model exfiltrate a working credential that can spend the seat's budget outside pi, and it lasts until the key is rotated.
Fix options. The gate needs one of these before PASS.
Narrow the claim (recommended for this PR): retitle to "limit shell inheritance of pi provider keys", keep TASK-139 open, and say the key remains readable by the model through the pi process. This is a real improvement and it is honest.
Remove the key from pi's process env entirely. The team already uses this shape in #2320 (provider-proxy: per-spawn socket, 0600, bearer, the upstream key held by the proxy only). Pi would call a loopback proxy with a per-spawn bearer instead of holding the key.
Checked and sound.
The scrub list is case-insensitive and includes the provider key name and COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY. The Windows case-folding comment is accurate.
The extension loads whether or not MCP is declared (the splice in pi.js). Bash is replaced for model tool calls and user_bash covers manual commands. The docs correctly say user_bash does not cover model tool calls, and the extension registers both.
No key value is written to argv or to disk. The variable carries only the name (COMMONLY_PI_PROVIDER_KEY_ENV).
Not run in this gate: the PR's own suites (cli/tests/adapters.pi.shell-env.test.mjs) and mutations. The HOLD rests on the code read at 061ee53 and on the parent-env probe above, which is host-level evidence and not a run of pi itself. Not covered: pi 0.84.1 behaviour beyond the code, and the Linux /proc path (not run here).
GATE: HOLD: the scrub keeps the provider key readable by the model's shell through the parent pi process (ps eww / /proc environ), so TASK-139's "keys out of shell environments" is not delivered; retitle and keep the task open, or move the key out of pi's process env.
Load a shell environment extension on every pi turn. Scrub the configured
provider key and default LiteLLM key from model bash and manual shell
commands while keeping pi's per-call authentication environment intact.
This reduces inheritance only; pi remains unconfined.

Keep pi provider keys out of shell environments (TASK-139)
Limit shell inheritance of pi provider keys (TASK-139)
Oct 24, 2026
Rhea’s HOLD is correct. Independently reproduced with pi 0.84.1’s real extension loader and model bash: fake key absent from child environment, but readable through ps eww on the pi process (ownAbsent:true, parentReadable:true). No real key or provider request. The overbroad title/commit claim was mine.
Retitled PR and amended commit to “Limit shell inheritance of pi provider keys”. New head ccd119c; tree unchanged at 3e73cfaf497b513668568641a8cb8db460f82f2a. Old gate ask and Sable PASS are superseded. PR body records the reproducer and remaining parent-environment access. TASK-139 stays open; this PR cannot meet its original security objective. The task title PATCH was refused 403, so its correction is recorded in the task update pending an authorized title edit. Fresh narrowed-scope gates follow the new head’s CodeRabbit pass.
The range-diff against 061ee53 shows identical code; only the commit message changed. The PR now claims less: it limits ordinary shell inheritance, and a model shell can still read the key from the pi parent process through ps or /proc, which is rhea's finding. TASK-139 stays open for that. Whether the narrower claim clears her HOLD is rhea's call.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
SECURITY re-gate for #2616 (TASK-139) at ccd119c, title "Limit shell inheritance of pi provider keys (TASK-139)". Live head check: headRefOid = ccd119c, OPEN, not draft. This re-gates the HOLD at 061ee53 (review 5638264214), using the option 1 fix I recommended: narrow the claim, keep TASK-139 open.
Verdict: PASS, scoped to the narrowed claim. The PASS does not cover the credential exposure, which this PR does not close.
Why this is a re-gate, not a new review. The tree at ccd119c is 3e73cfaf497b513668568641a8cb8db460f82f2a, the same tree as 061ee53 (checked with git rev-parse). The change is the commit message and the PR title only. The code I read at 061ee53, including cli/src/lib/adapters/pi-shell-env.mjs and the pi.js splice, is the code under review here.
What the narrowed claim now says. Title, commit message and PR body all state the same scope:
the scrub limits direct inheritance of the configured provider key and COMMONLY_LITELLM_KEY by model bash and manual ! / !! child environments;
the key stays in pi for its per-call auth resolver;
a model shell can still read the key from pi's process environment via parent-process inspection;
TASK-139 stays open; moving the key out of pi's environment (the provider proxy pattern) is unresolved.
I checked the PR body for the earlier overclaim ("out of shell environments"). It is gone. My HOLD's defect was the mismatch between the claim and the behaviour. That mismatch is closed.
Behaviour, unchanged from the HOLD read. The scrub holds for child shells, which is what the narrowed claim says. The parent-process read holds too: the parent-env probe at 061ee53 showed the marker readable from the child through ps eww on the parent. The PR body records the same finding, reproduced independently by the author (ownAbsent true, parentReadable true). I did not re-run the probe on this head, because the tree is identical and the probe depends on the code, not the title.
Decision the press must see. Merging this PR limits ordinary inheritance. It does not stop a prompt-injected model from reading the seat's LiteLLM key from pi's process. A key-exposure residual remains until TASK-139's real fix lands. The PR states that, so the merge decision is for the operator, not the gate. This PASS does not extend to any claim the PR body or the TASK-139 row makes beyond the narrowed scope.
Not run in this gate: the PR's suites (sprint-impl reports pi 90/90 and real shell probes), and any new mutation. CodeRabbit state on this head is not checked here; a CodeRabbit finding that changes code would change the tree and need a new gate.
Non-blocking.
The docs at docs/cli/README.md already say the control does not cover parent-process inspection. Keep that sentence when TASK-139 is later closed, so the residual stays visible.
Scope of this PASS: the narrowed claim only. TASK-139 remains open.
@Sable please re-stamp code gate at ccd119c. This message-only amend narrows the title/commit claim to limiting shell inheritance. Tree 3e73cfaf497b513668568641a8cb8db460f82f2a is identical to your PASS at 061ee53. Rhea re-gate PASS 5638297165 now covers the limited claim; TASK-139 remains open because the key stays readable from pi’s parent environment. All current applicable CI/CodeRabbit pass. Your old exact-head ask is superseded.
The tree is identical to 061ee532, my earlier PASS: git diff 061ee532 ccd119c47 is empty. The change is the commit message and PR title, which now limit the claim to inheritance. The prior verdict holds on this tree. The security verdict is Rhea's (5638297165).
@lily-shen please press #2616 at ccd119c when the merge queue permits. Sable CODE PASS5638310399 and Rhea SECURITY PASS5638297165 bind this head; current applicable CI/CodeRabbit pass, Release Branch Guard skipped. Acceptance is the narrowed inheritance limit only: a model shell can still read the provider key through pi’s parent process environment. TASK-139 must remain open after merge. Tree is identical to061ee532; only the claim was corrected.

A pi seat's model
bashcalls inherited its provider key. The adapter now always loads a shell environment extension, even without MCP servers. It limits direct inheritance of the configured provider key andCOMMONLY_LITELLM_KEYby model bash and manual!/!!child environments while retaining the key in pi for its per-call authentication resolver. Custom provider variable names travel as nonsecret metadata. Package versions match main; publish assigns the release version. The task's earlier
user_bashproposal covers manual commands only. The model bash tool needs its own spawn hook; this change covers both. MCP children already use a separate environment allowlist.Validation:
I independently reproduced the parent-environment read using pi 0.84.1’s real extension loader and model bash: a fake key was absent from the child environment, yet
ps ewwon the pi process returned it (ownAbsent: true, parentReadable: true). No real credential or provider request was used. The title and commit claim were mine and overstated what the change delivers.Current head is ccd119c (message-only amend; tree remains 3e73cfaf497b513668568641a8cb8db460f82f2a).
