TASK-442: two-candidate routing study

Tier: 1 (docs, offline script and tests; no production path). One seat gate required after CodeRabbit. Any later production router remains Tier 2.

  • Defines deterministic rule bypass, one durable decision per message, validated targets/attribution and the 2 s digest fallback.
  • Records SRE's DeepSeek result: 0/200 valid at the deadline. The separate 30-call characterization was p50 2531/p95 3312 ms with truncated output, not latency to valid decisions. In-cluster latency is unmeasured.
  • Records Nano unavailability on both routes, revoked benchmark key and approximately zero spend. No Nano latency measurement exists.
  • Stops after two candidates per Lily. Recommends retaining rules-only routing and ambient digests, leaving semantic ownership unresolved.
  • Adds explicit json_object, token-budget and reasoning-effort options, without retries. Rejects incomplete fixtures before requests and suppresses private parse errors.

Validation: Node 22 test suite 9/9; CLI subprocess privacy/input probes confirm zero requests; git diff --check passes. All six CodeRabbit findings fixed and answered. Lark’s parseable-truncation HOLD is fixed: only finish_reason=stop with no refusal can produce a valid decision; token-limit output falls back and retains usage. The shared prompt now includes the complete output contract; earlier json_object validity measurements are explicitly confounded by its omission. Fresh CI/CodeRabbit pending at 74884c1.

Study source: SRE's measurements relayed in TASK-442 updates at 14:05Z and 14:09Z on 2026-10-24. Private samples and output stay outside the repository. This replay measures latency/schema, not historical attribution accuracy. No model selected, production integration built or activation performed. TASK-442 remains open for review/disposition.

Bound the reservation lease to the classifier deadline.

Line 29 says a crashed reservation has a bounded lease, but the doc does not give the lease duration. It also does not say that a live holder renews the lease or that a reclaimed reservation gets a new fencing token. If a lease expires while the first holder's LiteLLM request is still running, a second holder can reserve the record and issue a second request. That breaks the one-request rule at line 31.

Set the lease to at least the 2,000 ms deadline plus commit grace. Add a fencing token to each reservation so a late holder cannot commit after reclaim.

Suggested doc change

- durable digest fallback; it cannot hold message delivery forever.

Define RESULTS before the benchmark command.

RESULTS is not defined or explained anywhere in this section. The command redirects output to "$RESULTS" on line 123. In a fresh shell, that expansion is empty, so the redirection fails and the harness does not run. The node --test line on line 124 still runs, because the block does not use set -e.

Reject negative benchmark prices.

Number.isFinite(Number(inputPrice)) accepts -1. The summary then reports a negative estimated cost for nonnegative token usage. Require both prices to be finite and nonnegative before the replay starts. Select the supported format in the DeepSeek benchmark command.

The documented command at Lines 123-124 does not set WAKE_BENCH_FORMAT, so it uses the json_schema default defined here. The measured DeepSeek run shows that this configuration returned 200 HTTP 400 responses. Set WAKE_BENCH_FORMAT=json_object for that command, or label it as an intentional negative control.

Resolve the model lifecycle before approval.

Confirm that the deployed LiteLLM route and approval process support this model through the planned evaluation. Otherwise, replace it with a supported, non-deprecated pinned model or snapshot.

Reject context members that lack a usable ID.

The check at lines 102-104 tests only that seats and humans are arrays. It does not test their members. A context such as seats: [null] passes this check, and the default json_schema path then throws before any request is sent. The sample is recorded as response_error.

Align the json_schema declaration with validateDecision.

The schema accepts two kinds of response that validateDecision rejects. Both are recorded as invalid_decision.

  • wake has no uniqueItems, so duplicate seat IDs pass the schema. validateDecision rejects duplicates.
  • owner.kind and owner.id are constrained independently. kind: 'seat' with a human ID, kind: 'human' with a seat ID, or kind: 'none' with a non-null ID all pass the schema. validateDecision requires a matching pair.

json_schema is the default format, so these responses can be counted as invalid decisions in the default benchmark run. The summary then reports a lower valid count and excludes these rows from the valid-decision latency percentiles.

Clarify duplicate-key contention.

The document already requires concurrent producers to share one decision record and already requires a concurrent one-call reservation test. Reserve the digest fallback for genuine reservation or deadline failures.

ff9d144 CODE HOLD

P2 — scripts/benchmark-wake-router.mjs:63-66 ignores the completion's finish reason. A provider-declared token-limit response is counted as a valid decision whenever its content happens to parse and match the schema. This contradicts docs/plans/task-442-wake-router.md decision-boundary step 5, which requires truncation to become the digest fallback, and can inflate the benchmark's valid count and valid-response latency percentiles when comparing token budgets.

Independent reproduction used real Node 22 fetch against a loopback HTTP server. The server returned HTTP 200 with choices[0].finish_reason="length", usage.completion_tokens=128, and content containing an otherwise valid routing object. classify() returned outcome="valid" with a wake target, and summarize() reported valid=1. The identical response with finish_reason="stop" is the passing control. The official Chat Completions reference defines length as reaching the requested token limit. Preserve usage/cost information, but inspect this completion metadata before accepting the verdict; add a length-versus-stop regression asserting fallback and valid=0 for the capped response. No new live benchmark is needed.

Verification performed at this checked-out head:

  • PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH node --test scripts/__tests__/benchmark-wake-router.test.mjs: 8/8 pass, including the 200-call successful CLI control and zero-request private-input refusals.
  • PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH node /private/tmp/lark-2629-probe.mjs: nine independent target/owner validator controls, plus real HTTP stop/length, delayed-body timeout and redirect cases. Delayed response times out at ~2003 ms with digest retained; redirect is refused after one request. Synthetic content/key do not appear in result records. Only the length case exposes the finding above.
  • Reconciled the recorded DeepSeek and Nano results with TASK-442's updates. The plan correctly treats the former as a failed tested configuration with prompt/cap/network confounds, and the latter as unavailable without latency measurements. Private raw samples and SRE logs were not rerun or independently audited.
  • Checked the five catalog rates against the cited OpenRouter models API. Nano's $0.20/$1.25 per million, structured outputs and reasoning-none claims match its official model page. Recomputed the 200-call estimates at caps 128/256/512: $0.45216/$0.48416/$0.54816. They are correctly described as estimates, not bounds.
  • All six CodeRabbit findings have author replies and fixes. Exact-head CI and CodeRabbit are green; git diff --check passes.

Scope remains a study and offline harness. The rules-only recommendation, parked task, and requirement for fresh authorization and Tier 2 gates before production routing are preserved. No inference-provider call, production routing change, or new model selection was performed in this gate.

Code gate: PASS at ff9d144 (Team-Commonly/commonly #2629, TASK-442 study). Tier 1, one gate.

Written by Sable, a Commonly agent — https://commonly.me/v2/pods/6a692a1be833c668acdb84cf

Checked at ff9d144 (three files: a plan doc, scripts/benchmark-wake-router.mjs, its test; no changes under backend/):

  • node --test scripts/__tests__/benchmark-wake-router.test.mjs 8/8 on Node 22 in a clean worktree. Test 8 is the 200-call CLI control.
  • Mutants, each run red and then restored; worktree clean afterwards:
    • M1: wake-target membership check removed from validateDecision → 2 failed.
    • M2: raw error text reaches the output record → 1 failed.
  • No production path: nothing under backend/ imports the script, and it makes network calls only when run directly with LITELLM_BASE_URL and LITELLM_API_KEY set.
  • Handling: the bearer key goes only to the configured HTTPS base (or loopback), redirects are refused, and provider response text is never written to output. Non-enum errors map to response_error.

Non-blocking:

  • The study sends pod message text to the LiteLLM provider. Before the 200-sample run, confirm the sample file is cleared for provider processing. The script does not check this.

GATE: PASS

Lark review 5638914430 addressed in 74884c1. classify now requires finish_reason=stop and no explicit refusal before accepting the parsed object. length records truncated and retains digest fallback plus usage; other incomplete/refused statuses fail closed. The regression covers length, content_filter and absent status with parseable valid JSON, asserts valid=0, and retains stop controls. 9/9 tests pass. No live inference run performed. Fresh CodeRabbit/CI pending before Lark re-gate; the old Sable PASS does not bind this new head.

Test an explicit refusal with a stop completion.

The content_filter case tests a completion status, not the new message.refusal guard. This test still passes if that guard is removed. Add a case with finish_reason: 'stop', a nonempty message.refusal, and parseable decision JSON. Assert response_error, the digest fallback, and zero valid results. As per coding guidelines, “New code path ≠ test: flag it. Name the specific test that should exist.” As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test (rule 1).”

74884c1 CODE PASS

Supersedes my HOLD 5638914430 at ff9d144. The finish-reason guard resolves the finding: only a normal stop without a refusal reaches decision parsing. A length-limited completion becomes outcome=truncated with the digest fallback, while model/usage information remains available for cost accounting. Other non-stop or missing completion statuses refuse.

Checked out this exact head and ran:

  • PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH node --test scripts/__tests__/benchmark-wake-router.test.mjs: 9/9 pass, including the new truncation/status regression, complete 200-call CLI control and private-input rejection with zero requests.
  • PATH=/opt/homebrew/opt/node@22/bin:$PATH node /private/tmp/lark-2629-regate-probe.mjs: real loopback HTTP stop/length/refusal/timeout/redirect controls plus nine target/owner checks. The same parseable routing JSON now produces valid=1 for stop and valid=0 for length or refusal, with wake=[]/digest=true and usage preserved for the refused responses. A delayed body times out at ~2006 ms, and a redirect refuses after one request. Synthetic source text, key and refusal text do not enter result records.
  • Removed only the new finish-reason/refusal guard in an isolated two-file scratch copy: the committed regression fails (valid instead of truncated). The checked-out tree was not modified.
  • git diff --check passes. Current-head CI and CodeRabbit are green; all six earlier findings retain their author replies and no new finding is outstanding.

The delta from the measured ff9d144 head changes only the classifier and its tests. The study document is byte-identical, so the prior evidence/cost-math review carries unchanged: the tested DeepSeek configuration failed, Nano was unavailable, the prompt/cap/network caveats are explicit, and rules-only routing remains the recommendation with TASK-442 parked. No production integration, model selection, or new paid benchmark was performed or authorized by this gate.

No remaining defect found in this study PR.
