feat(connectors): Linear writes with owner approval (TASK-238) - #2641
TASK-238. Re-pin Linear from connector-ops's approved 2026-10-19 consenting capture at read write openid. No new consent or vendor call was made during implementation.
Risk tier: Tier 2 (OAuth scope expansion and write-tool catalogue). Two exact-head seat gates required after CI/CodeRabbit; Wren's pin-set ruling requested before press. Draft, not enabled or deployed.
Pin set
68 captured tools: retain 36 read pins and add 26 named write pins. Every schema and readOnly/destructive annotation equals the capture. Read descriptions retain reviewed local copy; all 26 write descriptions are locally authored effect summaries.
Keep get_attachment and extract_images excluded because caller-chosen external fetches can enter agent context.
Wren ruled the pin set at feat(connectors): Linear writes with owner approval (TASK-238) #2641 (comment). Exclude prepare_attachment_upload (upload credential), create_attachment_from_upload (dependent flow), create_attachment (opaque base64 approval and deprecated) and create_issue_label (deprecated). Keep 36 reads and 26 writes, including diff review/merge and delegate. Exactly 19 writes are irreversible; seven have pinned reversals. save_issue explains that assignee me means the connection owner and delegate selects a workspace-installed agent.
All 26 writers project to write-with-confirm. The existing hosted mint refuses plain write; no broker, grant or approval semantics changed. Each vendor write remains behind credential-owner approval of exact arguments. Tokens at rest now have vendor write capability; pins are not a token-theft defense.
CIMD, endpoint/issuer, openid subject binding and signed-in Authorized applications revoke page remain as before.
Reconnect and rollout
After deployment, the two previously identified live Linear connections need removal/reconnect to acquire write. An English/Chinese Connectors Tools notice explains the upgrade and per-write approval requirement. Existing read-scoped tokens cannot gain write permission merely from this code change. New connections request read/write/openid.
Merge remains held until connector-ops confirms the Wednesday batch deployment/walk prerequisite, the revised pins pass CI/CodeRabbit, and exact-head code/security gates pass. Connector owns Sam's browser and any live reconnect/write walk. No live credentials, reconnect, vendor write, migration, deploy or publish here.

Follow-up 15993f1: Linear confirmation-mode minting now requires stored grantedScope token write. Legacy read/openid or missing scope refuses write_scope_required; read mode remains valid. Three focused callback/catalogue/mint suites 78/78 pass including four refusal controls. Updated stale callback/catalogue CI expectations; new-head CI rerunning.
Pin ruling applied at e20136c: four writers removed, all 26 write summaries authored locally, exact 19 irreversible flags from Wren. Per-tool schemas/annotations and delegate remain unchanged. Focused entry/catalogue suites 58/58 pass, scoped lint/diff pass. Fresh CI/CR pending, no gate ask until green.
The changes update Linear’s write-tool projections and requested scopes, require the write scope before minting a write-confirm grant, and display a localized notice for connected Linear entries.

Summary
Linear tool projections and scope data backend/__tests__/unit/services/hostedMcpEntry.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/hostedMcpConnect.callback.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/services/installableCatalogService.test.js
Tests cover 62 shipped pins, including 36 reads and 26 writes, their classifications and annotations, updated scopes, and captured-tool compatibility.
Write-confirm grant scope enforcement backend/routes/grants.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/grants.mint.test.js
The grant route rejects Linear write-confirm requests if grantedScope is not a string containing the exact write token. Tests cover rejected write-confirm requests and successful read-mode requests.
Connected Linear entries display a notice that older connections need reconnecting to enable writes and that each write requires approval. English and Simplified Chinese tests cover the notice.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2501: This PR documents Linear’s read-only capabilities, which differ from the write tools and scope added here.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2443: This PR describes the hosted-MCP write-confirm contract used by the Linear write tools.
Merge Risk: Low · up to e2013
Newly connected Linear users may still see an unnecessary reconnect notice. The write-scope callback path also needs a focused test before merge; no current failure of that path was established.

Explanation
The description is closely related to the changeset. It names TASK-238, the Linear re-pin to the 2026-10-19 capture at read/write/openid, the 26 write pins, the write-with-confirm projection, the grantedScope write-scope refusal in 15993f1, and the bilingual reconnect notice. Those match the raw summary's test, route, and locale changes. Its scope is far broader than the summary's detail, but the check only requires a relevant description, so it passes.

A connected Linear row with config.grantedScope set to read openid can still receive a write-with-confirm grant. Tool validation accepts the pinned write tools because resolveBrokerFor returns every tool in the Linear entry.
The install endpoint cannot enforce this because it accepts only podId, not a connection. The connection-specific authorization boundary is POST /api/grants; reject the grant there when the recorded scope lacks write.

Show the reconnect notice only for legacy Linear connections.
This predicate matches every connected Linear entry. After a user reconnects successfully, and for connections created after write access was added, connections.length > 0 remains true. The notice will continue to instruct the user to reconnect and may cause unnecessary connection removal.
Expose a server-owned needsWriteReconnect flag for the connection or entry, and render this notice only when that flag is true.
Based on the PR objective, the reconnect requirement applies to pre-write connections, not every current connection.

Addressed #2641 (review) at 15993f1: POST /api/grants refuses Linear confirmation-mode minting unless stored grantedScope contains the exact write token. Missing/empty/read-only/overwrite scope cases refuse with zero grants; read mode still works. Applies only to Linear because other hosted vendors have different scope vocabularies. The existing plain write refusal remains.
The notice is conditional copy for connections made before write access was added; it does not instruct already-upgraded connections to reconnect. It is deliberately shown while any Linear connection exists because the catalogue does not currently expose per-connection granted scopes. No claim of per-row upgrade detection.
Also fixed two stale CI expectations: callback uses the approved 10-19 scope capture, and catalogue projection expects confirmation mode for writers. Three focused suites 78/78 pass; scoped route lint/diff pass.

Pin-set ruling, at head 15993f16b.linear.ts is unchanged since 6daf3ca1. The newer commit only adds the mint's write-scope check, which is the code gate's to review. Line cites are at main2fc4535c5.
The 36 reads are approved. Of the 30 writes, 26 are approved and 4 come out. Before the gate, the 26 kept writes need descriptions of our own, and 19 of them need irreversible: true.
Reads: all 36 approved.
Names, upstream names, annotations and descriptions match main's 36, and every description is ours.
18 schemas differ from main only in 56 property descriptions, which readSchemaChange strips before it compares (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:204–205).
get_attachment and extract_images stay out, as on main.
All 66 pinned schemas match the approved capture this PR adds as its fixture.
Writes: four come out.
prepare_attachment_upload. Its result is an upload URL with its headers, for a PUT outside MCP, so it works as a credential for that upload. The connection-scope rules keep credentials out of what a seat reads (hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md:191). It could not reach the seat anyway: a parked write returns only the receipt fields its definition declares, and a hosted pin declares none (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:49–62, toolBrokerService.ts:1129–1142).
create_attachment_from_upload. Its assetUrl comes from the upload above, so the two go together. A link can still reach an issue through save_issue's links, which only appends.
create_attachment. The file arrives as base64, so the owner cannot read what they approve (hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md:276). The vendor also marks it deprecated.
create_issue_label. The vendor marks it deprecated in favour of save_issue_label, which stays.
The 26 kept writes need descriptions of our own. A pin's description is "The description an agent reads — ours, never the vendor's" (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:54). 27 of the 30 write descriptions here are the vendor's text, word for word. The description is what the seat reads (grantBrokerProjectionService.ts:209), and it is also the summary on the owner's approval card, with " (approval required)" added (toolBrokerService.ts:1265).
Vendor text also teaches a seat things that are false here. update_diff says to inspect the result before retrying, and save_status_update says it returns the saved update, but a parked hosted write returns no result. A seat reads the outcome back with get_issue or list_issues (hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md:296).
As on main's Linear reads and the Atlassian and Sentry writes, one line naming the effect is enough, with no promised result. For save_issue, say that assignee: "me" is the connection's owner, and that delegate hands the issue to an agent installed in that Linear workspace. Property descriptions stay the vendor's, because write schemas compare exactly, descriptions included (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:306–308).
irreversible: 19 marked, 7 not. The flag parks a call even on a write grant, "by the same rule GitHub's tools use" (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:57). GitHub leaves close_issue unmarked because it can be reopened (toolBrokerService.ts:424), and marks its other writes. So a write stays unmarked only when a pinned call can set back what it changed:
retire_issue_label and restore_issue_label undo each other, and so do retire_project_label and restore_project_label;
share_issue undoes unshare_issue;
mark_notification undoes itself (read or unread, snooze or unsnooze);
resolve_diff_thread resolves or reopens.
The other 19 publish text people read, merge, delete, show an issue to someone new, or create a record that no pinned call removes: save_issue, save_comment, save_document, save_project, save_status_update, save_release_note, save_diff_comment, submit_diff_review, update_diff, merge_diff, share_issue, delete_comment, delete_diff_comment, delete_status_update, delete_attachment, save_milestone, save_release, save_issue_label, save_project_label.
On a hosted pin the flag is a plain boolean (hostedMcpEntryService.ts:58), so a tool that is only sometimes reversible is marked whole. save_diff_comment with draft: true is one.
Linear's destructiveHint is not the test. It is true on six of the seven left unmarked.
The flag changes nothing today: hosted grants refuse plain write (grants.ts:337 at this head), and write-with-confirm parks every write (toolBrokerService.ts:1242–1243). It records this review, so a later plain-write tier cannot run these 19 unattended.
Atlassian's writes mark only the comment edit. I'll re-rule them under this test before any hosted grant can take plain write.
delegate on save_issue stays. The connection-scope rules keep out a tool "whose reach is picked at call time from the vendor's own list: an operation name, code the caller writes for the vendor to run, or another agent" (hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md:193). delegate names an agent from the workspace's list, so it needs a ruling. I read the rule as aimed at a tool whose purpose is to run a vendor agent, like Sentry's Seer analysis (sentry.ts:12–13). save_issue edits an issue, and delegate is one field of that edit.
A delegated agent works under its own app installation, which a workspace admin installed. Its work stays in Linear, and none of it comes back through the call.
Every Linear write parks, so the owner approves the exact call, delegate value included, as the member-approval ruling requires.
Leaving delegate out would not close the path, because mentioning the agent in a comment starts the same agent session. And since write schemas compare exactly, a pin without delegate would withhold save_issue itself.
I'll add this reading to the connection-scope rules after merge.
Drift before the walk. Between the 10-14 capture main pins from and the 10-19 capture, Linear reworded 56 property descriptions across 18 read tools. On a write pin, a reworded description is drift, and the tool is withheld as tool_drift. Compare a fresh tools/list with these pins before the walk.
At the next head, the gate checks three things: the four tools above are gone, the 26 write descriptions are ours, and the 19 are marked irreversible: true. After merge I'll update the connection-scope doc's Linear paragraph, which still says reads only.
Applied Wren pin ruling #2641 (comment) at e20136c. Removed the four named writers, wrote local effect summaries for all 26 retained writers, and set the exact 19 irreversible flags. save_issue explains assignee me and workspace-installed delegate. Every retained inputSchema and annotation still equals the approved capture; delegate unchanged. Entry/catalogue focused suites 58/58 pass. CI/CodeRabbit rerunning; draft and live-walk holds remain.
Line 864 checks only that each writer description differs from the captured first line of that tool's description. Any other string passes this check, including a placeholder. The only content check for a writer is on save_issue (lines 867-869). The other 25 writers have no assertion on their local effect text, so a placeholder on any of them would not fail the suite.
Add a per-writer assertion for each approved effect summary. Use a table keyed by tool name, and require each writer's description to contain its expected summary text. Keep the existing irreversible-flag and delegate schema assertions.

Cover the Linear write scope in the callback test.
The shipped Linear entry requests read write openid, but the callback suite replaces it with a fixture that requests only read openid. The suite therefore cannot detect a regression that drops write before persistence. Add a write-inclusive callback case and assert that config.grantedScope contains write.
