Configure sharded service tests .github/workflows/tests.yml |
The service-test job runs two shards with fail-fast disabled. Each shard runs its partition of the matching Jest service tests. |

- main has almost no merge protection: 1 of 11 checks required, no review gate, admins exempt (decision needed) #1373: This change adds two matrix entries for the Service Tests check. It does not change branch protection.

This change only splits the service tests into two CI shards and leaves application code untouched. No concrete defect was established. The remaining caveat is GitHub's handling of manual single-leg reruns, which is outside this change.

SECURITY gate for #2648 (ci: shard real-DB service tests while preserving the required gate) at d42fb3d, requested by Kai (pod message 83878, co-addressed to Lark). Live head check: headRefOid = d42fb3d, OPEN, not draft, base main. Diff: one file, .github/workflows/tests.yml, +6/-2. Read at that head: the full diff, the top-level permissions block, the concurrency block, the test-gate job (needs list, "Verify gate covers every suite", "Verify every check passed"), and the whole service-test job (runs-on expression, services, env, steps). Checked that no other job in the file uploads an artifact or writes a cache under a name the shards could collide on. Not run: the workflow itself, or any live run. Lark's code gate is separate.
Verdict: PASS. The change adds a two-shard matrix to service-test and nothing else. It does not touch secrets, permissions, triggers, or the runner selection that keeps fork PRs off the heavy runner.
Checked.
- Permissions. The workflow-level
contents: readis unchanged, and the service-test job declares no permissions of its own. The matrix adds no write scope. - Runner selection. The runs-on expression is byte-identical. Both shards resolve it the same way: pull_request from a fork goes to ubuntu-latest, and same-repo runs and merge_group use HEAVY_RUNNER. Sharding adds a second concurrent heavy job per run, which is a capacity cost. It does not widen the trust boundary.
- Secrets and env. The job env and services are unchanged. Neither shard reads a secret that the single job did not.
- Required gate. test-gate (id test-gate, name "Test & Coverage") is still the required check. Its needs list still names service-test, and a matrix job reports one aggregate result, so a failing shard fails the gate.
fail-fast: falsemeans a failure in one shard does not cancel the other, which only changes how fast a red result arrives. The "every check passed" predicate[.[].result] | all(. == "success")still covers the service-test entry. - Suite-coverage check. The awk over job ids still returns service-test as the id, because the matrix changes the display name, not the key. The diff in the "Verify gate covers every suite" step should stay empty.
- Partition.
--shard=N/2splits the__tests__/servicefile set. The two shards are disjoint and cover the set when both run on the same commit, which is what the PR records (40+39). Under the partition, a security test in the service tier still runs once, in one shard. - Artifacts and caches. Only backend-tests uploads an artifact, and it is already keyed by shard. service-test uploads nothing. The setup-node cache is read-only per run and keyed on the lockfile, so two shards restoring it does not collide.
Non-blocking.
- The display name now carries "(1/2)" and "(2/2)". Any branch-protection rule or external tool that matches the old name "Service Tests (Tier 1 — real DBs)" exactly would stop matching. The required context is "Test & Coverage" per the workflow comments, so this should be safe. Confirm the protection rule names Test & Coverage and not the service-test check before merge. This is a check-name hygiene item, not a control weakness.
- Shard count is a literal in two places (the matrix list and the
/2in the name and the command). A future change to 3 shards has to edit all three. Not a defect today.
Not covered: the code review (Lark's), CI results beyond what the PR body records, the branch-protection settings, and the live runs.

d42fb3d CODE PASS
No defect found in the service-test sharding change. The full PR is one workflow file, +6/-2: matrix [1,2], fail-fast=false, shard-specific display name, and --shard=${{ matrix.shard }}/2 on the existing Jest invocation. Normalizing those exact fields makes the service job equal to the base. Its services, real-DB environment, runner selection, dependencies, test filter, --runInBand and --forceExit are unchanged. Each matrix job initializes and stops its own Mongo7/Postgres16 containers.
Verification at the checked-out exact head:
- Node 22/Jest --listTests --json --runInBand with the unchanged tests/service filter, then with --shard=1/2 and --shard=2/2: 79 = 40 + 39, no duplicate or omitted path. This includes the existing tests/services/dmService.agentDm.test.ts prefix match; sharding does not alter that selection.
node /private/tmp/lark-2648-probe.cjs: parsed Test & Coverage object equals base byte-for-value, including job ID, exact check name, needs and shell predicates. Executed its extracted shell for 20 cases: success passes; failure/cancelled/skipped for every needed job and omission of service-test refuse. Changing all to any makes a failed-service case incorrectly pass and is caught. Replacing the second partition with the first is likewise caught by the coverage check.- Independently matched actual PASS paths from both candidate CI jobs to the local Jest lists: exactly 40 suites/411 tests and 39 suites/359 tests pass. Test & Coverage succeeds at this head. No local full real-DB suite rerun was performed.
- Verified the timing source metadata: service job 5:00 before versus 3:14/2:56 after; workflow 5:46 versus 4:16. Baseline 14929bd and PR base have no differences in the workflow, service-test directory, Jest config, package manifest or lockfile. These support the body's single-run observations, not a steady-state median or a causal performance guarantee.
git diff --checkpasses. CodeRabbit is successful with no inline findings. A cancelled duplicate PR-target guard has a later successful same-head successor; the required Test & Coverage result itself is successful.
This gate covers the workflow change and its evidence. The post-merge one-hour critical-path median remains separate from this single-run comparison.

Confirmed Rhea’s check-name follow-up: main branch protection currently requires exactly Test & Coverage (required_status_checks contexts/checks); it does not require the former Service Tests display name. The branch-rules endpoint adds no required-status context. Both exact-head gates PASS at d42fb3d: security review5638961376 and code review5638967026. No head change. Service Tests was the real-DB CI critical path. Split its existing job into two Jest shards, with an independent Mongo7/Postgres16 service pair per runner and sequential execution within each shard. Both legs report with fail-fast=false. The service-test job ID and the complete Test & Coverage aggregator are unchanged, including its exact required-check name, needs and failure predicate.
TASK-484. Tier 2 (.github workflow): Rhea and Lark gates required. Separate from #2639.
Validation
Jest listTests partitions all 79 service suites into 40+39 with no overlap or omission. The parsed aggregator object equals main. Exercising its exact shell predicate accepts success and rejects failure, cancellation and skipping. The real candidate run passes both shards and Test & Coverage. No runtime, dependency, test selection filter or test code changed.
Real-run timings
Both observations used Latchkey medium runners. The baseline branch and this PR base have identical workflow and service-test files (GitHub compare returned no differences for those paths). These are nearby single runs, not a one-hour median or a controlled performance study.
The slower service job fell 5:00 → 3:14 (35%). Whole Tests workflow time from run_started_at to final updated_at fell 5:46 → 4:16 (26%); both runs succeeded. The candidate now waits slightly longer on Backend tests (1/3), 3:16, than on either service shard. Database/container setup remains about one minute per leg, so service job totals are about three minutes rather than the 2.5-minute estimate. The candidate workflow meets the <=5-minute target in this observation.
SRE owns the new critical-path median after merge and a full hour of runs. That follow-up remains outstanding; no fleet-wide median or merge claim here.
