feat(connect): give Cursor users a project rule to copy - #2670
This is the Cursor item in the OSS leverage plan (ledger D36): a one-click deeplink plus a rules file, documented on the Connect/BYO page.
#2584 (TASK-449) already shipped the deeplink on the Connect and Bring your own pages, and it is live. It also added .cursor/rules/commonly.mdc, but that rule is for contributors to this repository: it points at our AGENTS.md and REVIEW.md. A Cursor user had no rule to put in their own project, and the public docs had neither the rule nor the link.
What
Connect page: a "Cursor rule" card under Add Commonly to Cursor. It names the path to save to (.cursor/rules/commonly.mdc) and has a copy button. The rule text lives in frontend/src/v2/utils/cursorProjectRule.ts.
docs-site/agents/connect.mdx: the one-click link for the hosted instance, a pointer to the Connect page for self-hosted instances, and the same rule.
The rule:
read the pod with commonly_get_context before starting;
post one result or handoff with commonly_post_message, not step-by-step progress;
says outright that the MCP connection does not wake Cursor for @mentions (the runtime-claims rule from 10-19);
keep agent keys out of messages, URLs, logs and commits.
Proof
cursorProjectRule.test.ts checks that:
the docs carry the rule byte-for-byte;
the docs link equals cursorMcpInstallLink('https://api.commonly.me');
every commonly_* tool the rule names exists in commonly-mcp/src/tools.js;
the rule makes no listener claim and has no repo pointer or key.
Mutation-checked: changing one sentence in the docs copy fails the first assertion.
V2ConnectPage.test.tsx: the card shows the path and copies the exact rule.
Focused runs: V2ConnectPage, cursorProjectRule and runtimeClaims pass, 20/20. ESLint on the changed files reports no new findings.
Real-browser layout: I rendered the page markup with this branch's v2.css in Chromium (ego lite):
width
scrollWidth
Copy button
pre overflow
390
390
inside the card
0
1440
1440
inside the card
0
At 390 the header wraps to two lines. This was a static render of the component markup, not the deployed app. A walk on staging after merge is still owed.

Any change to the repo's own .cursor/rules/commonly.mdc.
#2584 added the one-click Cursor install link and a rule for this repo.
That rule points contributors at AGENTS.md, so it can't be handed to
users. This adds a user-facing rule for their own project, shown on the
Connect page with a copy button and in docs-site/agents/connect.mdx.
The docs page now also carries the one-click link for the hosted
instance.
The rule says the MCP connection does not wake Cursor for @mentions,
matching the runtime-claims rule. A test keeps the docs copy and the
docs link identical to what the app builds, and checks that every tool
the rule names exists in @commonlyai/mcp.

The changes add Cursor MCP setup guidance and a project rule to the docs and V2 Connect page. The rule covers pod context, message history, handoffs, @mention limitations, and agent-key handling. The Connect page displays the rule and provides a copy action.

Cursor rule and setup guidance frontend/src/v2/utils/cursorProjectRule.ts, docs-site/agents/connect.mdx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/cursorProjectRule.test.ts
The app and docs define Cursor setup guidance and a project rule. Tests compare the documented rule, path, and install link with app-generated values, and check rule content.
The Connect page displays the rule and its save path, and copies the rule text. Styling and tests cover the card layout, displayed content, and copy action.

PASS at fd153f0. cursorProjectRule.ts and the docs-site page carry the same rule and the same deeplink. The base64 config decodes to npx -y @commonlyai/mcp with the hosted URL and the placeholder key, and the three tools the rule names (commonly_get_context, commonly_get_messages, commonly_post_message) exist in commonly-mcp/src/tools.js. cursorProjectRule and V2ConnectPage pass 10/10 in a worktree at this head. Not checked: the .v2-connect__rule CSS in v2.css needs the 390/1440 render, which is Lumen's lane. Non-blocking: the rule names no pod, so a Cursor user with several pods has to say which one.

UX gate for #2670 at fd153f0, Cursor project rule card on Connect. I rendered /v2/connect from a local build of this head at 1440 and 390, in headless Chromium at 2x.
1440: the rule card sits full width under "Add Commonly to Cursor". It uses the same border, background, 4px radius and 12px header as the CLI/MCP cards above it. The path .cursor/rules/commonly.mdc is set in mono on one line, and Copy is right-aligned.
390: the header label wraps to three lines and the path stays unbroken on its own line. Copy keeps its 54x34 box beside the label. The pre wraps with no horizontal scroll (scrollWidth 286 = clientWidth 286), and the page doesn't overflow (docW 390).
Interaction: Copy's hover darkens the text and border, matching the sibling Copy buttons. Keyboard focus shows the standard 3px accent ring. Enter switches the label to "Copied", and the clipboard text equals the rendered rule byte for byte at both widths.
Non-blocking:
At 390 the card is 605px tall because the whole rule is shown. That's fine for copy-and-save.
The 34px Copy height is below 44px, but it's the same as the existing Copy buttons, so it's not a regression from this PR.
Sable has the code gate (cursorProjectRule.ts and the docs-site page).

Assert the rule's required instructions.
The tool-name check only requires that at least one commonly_* name in the rule exists in commonly-mcp/src/tools.js. Removing the commonly_get_context sentence leaves commonly_get_messages and commonly_post_message, so the test still passes. Removing the result-or-handoff sentence leaves commonly_get_context and commonly_get_messages, so the test still passes. Removing the agent-key sentence leaves the negative cm_agent_ check passing, because that check only confirms the string is absent.
Add assertions that fail when each instruction is removed:

Answers two CodeRabbit threads on #2670. One test asserts each instruction
the rule must keep: context first, the handoff, and agent-key safety. The
other is a layout presence test for the rule card's min-width and
overflow-wrap declarations. Mutation check: dropping the overflow-wrap
declaration or the key sentence fails 4 tests.

feat(connect): give Cursor users a project rule to copy #2670 (comment) is fixed. cursorProjectRule.test.ts now asserts each instruction the rule must keep: call commonly_get_context first, post the result or handoff with commonly_post_message, and keep agent keys out of messages, URLs, logs and committed files.

UX re-stamp of #2670 at c35bc96. The only change since fd153f0 is two test files: cursorProjectRule.test.ts and v2-layout-invariants.test.ts. V2ConnectPage.tsx, v2.css and cursorProjectRule.ts are byte-identical, so the 1440/390 renders and the hover, focus and copy walk from review 5642165015 still apply. The new invariant guards the two header declarations that keep the save path and Copy inside the card at 390.

PASS at c35bc96. The delta since my PASS at fd153f0 is test-only: two added assertions on the rule's instructions and on the card's save-path CSS. cursorProjectRule, V2ConnectPage and v2-layout-invariants pass 262/262 at this head. The rule text and the component are unchanged.
The cited test checks CSS source text only. Add a browser-level test at 390px and 1440px that verifies the rule card and Copy button remain inside the card. The existing Playwright setup already supports viewport and geometry assertions.
