TASK-507 / D66

Tier: 1
Gate: Sable (request after CodeRabbit and container proof)
Hold: draft pending SRE's live Docker VM caps and first-run permission on TASK-507, then container proof and required gate/CI.

Adds npm run test:container -- backend|cli|frontend|service|<repo-relative Jest file>.

  • Explicitly pulls CI Node/DB images, inspects the resulting IDs, and runs only those IDs with --rm --pull=never. No deploy-image builds.
  • Read-only source mount; git-listed files copied into bounded /work tmpfs; dependencies, home/cache, MongoMemoryServer/Jest temp data remain in container tmpfs. Root filesystem read-only. No host dependency mounts, Docker socket, production env or published ports.
  • SRE-owned host policy supplies memory/swap/CPU/tmpfs/log caps and global mkdir lock. Waits for live PID, cleans dead owner's labelled resources before recovery, cleans on normal exit/signals, retains lock on cleanup failure. Containers/network carry commonly.test=1 plus PID ownership.
  • service uses CI postgres:16 and mongo:7 on a private network. Other suites retain CI's default Jest setup. Exact Jest paths select the matching package; service paths enable real DB mode.
  • Tests exercise the actual orchestration process with fake Docker/git, including exit 37 propagation, pull refusal, service command boundaries, waiting/dead-PID lock recovery and failed-cleanup lock retention. No nested Docker in these regressions.

Verification so far

  • node --check for both MJS files, bash -n for the container entrypoint, git diff --check: pass.
  • Tests and real container smoke not run yet: SRE explicitly held the first container until Docker Desktop's 6GB RAM / 1GB swap / 4CPU / 64GB disk VM limits are active. No local suite, dependency install, image build or container run has been performed for this PR.
  • SRE supplied Node memory 4g, logs 10m ×3 and the global lock. Requested explicit confirmation of workspace/home/temp/service tmpfs and service/CPU values on TASK-507. Runner refuses to execute without the complete host policy.

Before ready: run the single regression file inside the capped runner, fix findings, prove source unchanged and cleanup after success/failure/interrupt, answer CodeRabbit, obtain one exact-head gate. CI remains the merge gate.

Walkthrough

This change adds a policy-constrained runner for containerized repository tests. It supports named suites and approved test paths, optional database services, lock and cleanup handling, regression tests, an npm script, and development documentation.

Changes: Container test execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy, suite, and image selection
scripts/container-tests/run.mjs, cli/__tests__/container-test-runner.test.mjs, docs/development/container-tests.md
The runner validates policy limits, accepts named suites or approved test paths, and derives image tags from CI. Tests cover policy, image, and path validation. The documentation describes accepted inputs and policy requirements.
Lock and service lifecycle
scripts/container-tests/run.mjs, cli/__tests__/container-test-runner.test.mjs, docs/development/container-tests.md
The runner waits for or recovers a global lock, optionally starts PostgreSQL and MongoDB, and removes run resources before releasing the lock. Failed cleanup retains the lock. Tests cover lock recovery and service cleanup.
Source snapshot and test execution
scripts/container-tests/run.mjs, scripts/container-tests/inside.sh, package.json, cli/__tests__/container-test-runner.test.mjs, docs/development/container-tests.md
The runner passes a Git source manifest to a read-only test container and returns the test exit code. The container script installs suite dependencies and runs the selected tests. The npm script, regression tests, and documentation cover execution and its constraints.

The stale-lock tests miss the recovery mutex leak and the cleanup-before-recovery contract.

The test dead PID is the only automatic stale-lock recovery passes with the .reap leak in run.mjs Line 71. It never asserts that ${path}.reap is gone after recovery. Add that assertion, and add a second recovery. The second recovery must succeed. That sequence would fail today.

Other behaviour in this change has no test:

  • onStale in main removes the PID-labelled containers and networks before the lock is removed. The docs rely on this ordering.
  • The SIGINT and SIGTERM cleanup path has no test.

Suggested assertion:

const release = await acquireLock(path, { alive: () => false });
await expect(readFile(`${path}.reap`)).rejects.toMatchObject({ code: 'ENOENT' }); // mutex must be released

As per path instructions: "missing tests for changed behaviour" and "A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test (rule 1)."

Probe PostgreSQL over TCP in the health check.

pg_isready -U postgres defaults to the Unix socket. The official PostgreSQL image uses a Unix-socket-only temporary server during initialization, so this check can pass before PostgreSQL accepts TCP connections. The test container connects to PG_HOST=postgres on port 5432.

Update the PostgreSQL health check in the container options to make pg_isready

Abort active Docker work before cleanup.

Setting process.exitCode does not stop main(). After a signal, the runner can continue with pulls, readiness checks, or Jest while the signal handler cleans and releases the lock. Pass an AbortSignal to every Docker command after lock acquisition. Abort the active child from the signal handler. Wait for its close event before cleanup. Keep cleanup in finally and preserve 130 or 143 when main() rejects.

Closing this. v3 only takes fixes now, and the v4 rebuild has its own CI and local test setup, so that's where a capped local test run belongs. The branch stays up in case any of this is worth carrying over.
