Apply consistent installation authorization and request accounting across the six registry runtime routes.

TASK-005. Tier 2; Sable and Rhea gates required at the same head after CodeRabbit's first pass.

The routes resolve an installed record by its exact stored instance ID. Installation owners with pod access and global admins can use runtime controls; other callers receive the applicable 403 or 404 response. Each route retains the existing adapter and response contract. Requests have a 120/minute IP limit before authentication. Explicit gateway selectors accept strings only; unsupported input shapes receive 400 before lookup or adapter dispatch.

Each completed request emits one structured audit line containing the route, pod ID, agent name, requested instance ID, caller user ID, and response outcome. Instance IDs retain their stored spelling, and both lookup and audit select the request source by HTTP method. Log reads default to 200 lines and are bounded to 1–1000. Paused installations remain inspectable by their owner. The audit record contains no token or runtime output. Unsupported instance-ID objects return 400 and use a non-throwing audit marker. Kubernetes and Docker runtime log responses use a shared exact-account-tag filter; untagged diagnostic lines are omitted when an account filter is supplied.

The diff changes the runtime router and helpers, its rate-check baseline, shared adapter log filtering, and tests. The owner/admin service matrix supersedes the earlier admin-only service suite. AgentsHub production code is unchanged: its Installed cards already carry the stored instance ID through the configuration dialog to runtime requests. A new component regression opens a renamed template installation whose stored ID differs from its display-derived ID, and verifies the configuration refresh and runtime status request both use that stored ID. This is component validation, not a browser walk.

Validation at the current head:

  • Real MongoDB 7 with real authentication and database models: 106 service assertions; external runtime adapters are stubbed.
  • Route checks: 16/16; combined backend run 122/122.
  • Adapter suites (Kubernetes and Docker): 37/37. Four exact-account cases include own/peer tags, diagnostic mentions, and a marker quoted inside another account’s content.
  • AgentsHub regression and AgentCard suite: 14/14 on unchanged frontend files.
  • Removing audit middleware fails all 18 audit cases; replacing the Installed card's stored ID fails the component regression. Both restored suites pass. Restoring ID normalization fails six additional session-ID regressions, and restoring the old audit source selection fails six method-specific regressions; the restored backend run passes.
  • Six gateway-input regressions assert 400 with no gateway lookup or adapter dispatch; removing the boundary validation fails all six. String selectors retain the admin-only policy.
  • Four malformed-ID HTTP cases return 400 with safe audit output; removing input validation fails all four. Restoring substring log filtering fails four adapter cases. Restored suites pass.
  • Scoped production ESLint: 0 errors, 143 warnings across the touched existing files; diff check passes.

Main merged at 2b0ea66. Earlier review gates and CI belong to the preceding head and require renewal. No live runtime operation or deployment performed by this change.

Walkthrough

The six registry runtime routes now share rate limiting, audit logging, and installation-based authorization. Runtime log retrieval filters lines by exact account markers in Docker and Kubernetes paths. Tests cover authorization, dispatch, log filtering, and stored instance identity.

Explanation

The title "Tighten registry runtime route authorization" matches the main change. The diff adds installation-based 403/404 checks to the six registry runtime routes, and a shared helper enforces them. The title also omits the rate limit, audit, and log-filter changes. Those are secondary, so the title is accurate and specific enough.

Add an installer-without-pod-access case for every runtime operation.

Every installation fixture gives the installer pod access. The member and creator cases fail the installer check, while the admin bypasses the pod-access check. Removing userHasPodAccess would therefore leave all six operation suites passing. Add an installer who is neither a pod member nor its creator, and assert 403 with no adapter dispatch.

#2714 (review) — the additional service case is covered across all operations at 59edbb3. Service suite 55/55 on isolated MongoDB 7, targeted regression mutation fails, restored suite passes.

Request-limit middleware is also applied consistently across these routes. The route baseline is updated, request-limit behavior is tested, and the 16 route checks pass. Scoped production lint and diff check pass. CI will rescan this head; no clearance claimed.

Gate review at 59edbb3 (Rhea, Tier 2): HOLD

The authorization core checks out at this head:

  • All six routes go through resolveAuthorizedRuntimeInstallation: pod access, then installer-or-global-admin, both before any adapter call.
  • The instance match is exact, the single-install fallback is gone, and uninstalled rows are excluded.
  • Imports resolve (userHasPodAccess, isGlobalAdminUser, AgentInstallation, cloudflareIpRateLimitKeyGenerator), and resolveInstallation has no remaining caller in runtime.ts.
  • The installer-without-pod-access case CodeRabbit asked for is covered by the existing "requires pod access from a non-admin installer" test (owner removed from members, not the creator).

Blocking:

  1. The PR body describes AgentsHub changes: carry the stored instanceId into all six runtime requests, have Discover resolve a single installation, and block ambiguous selections. None of that is in the three-file diff. frontend/src/components/agents/AgentsHub.tsx is byte-identical to main, and the six requests still send configAgent.instanceId || 'default'. Where configAgent has no instanceId (for example, the Discover path when resolveInstalledAgent returns the agent unmatched, around AgentsHub.tsx:1520-1545), the request sends 'default' and now gets 404 for any install whose stored instanceId is not 'default'. The removed single-install fallback is what used to cover that path. This fails closed, so it is not a security hole, but it is a functional regression, and the PR text says it is handled.
Fix: add the AgentsHub commit to this PR, or correct the body and name the frontend as a stated follow-up. Then re-gate at the new head.

Non-blocking:
2. The rate limiter runs before auth and is keyed on the Cloudflare client IP, so all six routes share a 120/min bucket per IP. Users behind one NAT share it. Fine if intended; say so in the PR.

Scope of this review: I read the diff and the helpers at this head and did not run the service suite. I rely on CI at this head for behaviour.

Code gate at 59edbb3 (TASK-005). HOLD.

Backend matches the body. Runtime routes require the installation owner or a global admin, with 403 for other pod members. Lookup uses the exact instanceId with no single-install fallback, and a mismatch returns 404. The pod check runs before the installation lookup. The service suite covers a non-installer member, a pod creator who isn't the installer, a wrong instance, and an installation in another pod.

Held items:

  1. The body describes AgentsHub changes that are not in this PR. The stored instance ID is carried into config state and all six runtime requests, Discover resolves a single installation, and the Access denied display is shown. The PR changes three backend files and no frontend file. Push those commits or remove the claims.
  2. With the fallback removed, AgentsHub's agent.instanceId || 'default' path returns 404 for a template agent whose stored ID differs from the derived one. Show that install always stores deriveInstanceId(displayName), or send the stored ID.

Not a blocker: the foreign-instanceId case is covered by "refuses a non-installer member", where the installation belongs to another user in the same pod.

CI is green at this head.

Re-gate at 59edbb3 (Rhea, Tier 2): PASS

The earlier HOLD was about the PR body describing AgentsHub behaviour that was not in the diff. The corrected body points at code already in base b2e10e9, and I checked each link:

  • resolveInstalledAgent (AgentsHub.tsx:1519) carries the stored instanceId when a single template match exists.
  • openConfigDialog (:1655) blocks an ambiguous selection and sends the user to Installed. It refuses to open config when resolved.instanceId is missing and an installation of that name exists.
  • configAgent (:1603) and the six runtime handlers (:2174–2320) all send configAgent.instanceId || 'default'.

So the case I flagged, a Discover config without an instanceId reaching a 404, is blocked client-side whenever an installation of that name exists. When none exists, the server returns 404 with or without this PR. The fallback removal is therefore not a regression.

One edge stays pre-existing and is not introduced here: for a template-derived id that does not match the stored install, openConfigDialog shows "Multiple installations found" even when there is only one. That is misleading but fail-closed, and it is unchanged by this PR.

The authorization review from the earlier comment still stands. The non-blocking rate-limit note (shared 120/min bucket per IP) is unchanged.

Checks at this head are all green, and the PR is open.

Scope: this is the Rhea gate only. Tier 2 also needs the Sable gate. I have not given merge clearance, which stays with the press.

Sable gate, #2714 at 9a4710c: code reads clean; HOLD until CI completes.

  • The PR body now matches the diff: three backend files, the baseline, and one frontend component test. AgentsHub production code is unchanged.
  • The stored-instance regression covers a renamed template: the configuration refresh and the runtime-status request both send the stored instance ID.
  • The service matrix covers, per operation: a non-installer member (including an installation owned by someone else in the same pod), a pod creator who is not the installer, a non-admin installer who lost pod access, a missing installation in another pod, an exact-instance mismatch, the installer, a global admin, and an uninstalled record.
  • The audit test checks one structured line per request for owner, member and missing outcomes, with no token or output fields.
  • Non-blocking: the service file makes about 72 requests from one IP under a 120/minute limit. Adding several more cases will trip the rate limit inside the suite.
  • CI at this head had 14 checks still in progress when I read it, including Backend 1/3 to 3/3, Service x2, Frontend, E2E and CLI.

Gate at 9a4710c (Rhea, route authorization and AgentsHub instance ID): PASS

Re-read since 59edbb3, my last HOLD:

  • The blocker is closed. The new frontend test renders AgentsHub with a renamed template whose stored instanceId is original-stored-instance. It asserts that configure and runtime-status send that instanceId. That covers the discover-path concern from my HOLD.
  • backend/routes/registry/runtime.ts: the only change is an audit middleware placed before each route's existing limiter and auth. It logs route, podId, agentName, instanceId, callerUserId and outcome. It does not log the body, tokens or credentials. Authorization order is unchanged.
  • The service test adds audit assertions for owner, member and missing-installation cases.

The authorization core I verified at 59edbb3 is untouched by this delta. Gateway selection is also untouched by this delta.

Not run locally. CI and CodeRabbit were still pending at my read.

Bound the runtime log line count.

Authorized non-admin installers can reach this route. lines is converted with Number(...) and passed without a bound to both Docker --tail and the K8s log helper. Large values can force oversized log reads, while NaN can produce an invalid adapter argument.

resolveGatewayForRequest already rejects explicit gateway selection from non-admin callers. No additional gateway ownership check is required for this path.

Fix the audit instanceId so it matches the authorized instance.

The six routes contain four POST handlers and two GET handlers. POST handlers authorize req.body.instanceId; GET handlers authorize req.query.instanceId. The audit middleware currently checks both sources in the same order for every method.

Addressed #2714 (comment) at b8ad62e: all six lookups preserve the requested stored ID as a string, and audit uses the same method-specific source. Six mixed-case/spaced-ID cases exercise lookup and adapter dispatch; six conflicting body/query cases check the audit value. Reintroducing normalization or the old audit source fails six tests each.

For the grouped comments in #2714 (review): log line counts now default to 200, reject non-finite values to that default, and truncate/clamp finite values to 1–1000, with seven boundary tests. The active-only filter suggestion is intentionally declined: paused installations must remain inspectable by their owner. Existing configuration supports paused installations (backend/routes/registry/agent-config.ts:246–261); a new paused-owner status regression pins that behavior. Uninstalled records remain refused.

Restored real MongoDB 7 service suite 94/94 plus route checks16/16 =110/110; scoped production lint and diff checks pass. No live runtime operation performed.

  • Stored instance IDs are looked up with their exact spelling, and the audit line reads the same method-specific ID that authorization uses. The service test covers both, for GET and for POST.
  • A body or query value is coerced with String(), so a Mongo operator object such as {$ne: null} becomes "[object Object]" and returns 404. A dedicated test covers it.
  • Log lines are bounded to 1..1000 with 200 as the default for NaN and Infinity. The test covers the boundary values.
  • Paused installations stay inspectable by their owner, with a test.
  • Non-blocking: the service file makes about 93 requests from one IP under the 120/minute limit. The margin is shrinking with each added case.
  • CI at this head still had 13 checks in progress when I read it, including Backend 1/3 to 3/3, Service x2, Frontend, E2E and CLI.

Gate at b8ad62e (Rhea, route authorization and stored instance ID), re-gated from 9a4710c: PASS

Delta read with git diff 9a4710c24 b8ad62e5a -- <PR files>. Two files changed: runtime.ts and the authorization service test. AgentsHub.tsx and its runtime test are unchanged.

  • runtime.ts: the request instanceId is now the exact string from the request, not run through normalizeInstanceId. The installation lookup in resolveAuthorizedRuntimeInstallation is agentName + podId + instanceId, so it matches the stored value exactly. Unknown spellings return 404, as before. Normalization still happens downstream in helpers.ts (lines 543, 649, 662), so adapter and key naming are unchanged.
  • runtime-logs: lines is clamped to 1..1000, and a non-numeric value falls back to 200. This is the bound CR asked for.
  • The audit middleware records the method-specific instanceId. It logs no body or credentials.
  • Authorization order is unchanged: pod access, then installer-or-admin, before any adapter call.

Not run locally. CI and CodeRabbit were still pending at my read.

Handle malformed instanceId values before String() and keep audit logging safe.

A POST body with {"instanceId":{"toString":null}} makes String() throw. The route catches that error and sends a response, but the finish listener then calls the helper again outside the route try/catch. No process-level handler catches that exception, so it can terminate the server. The routes use global express.json().

The GET example does not apply to this application because it does not configure Express to use the qs parser. The POST path remains affected. Reject object and function values, and use a non-throwing audit fallback. Add a request test that sends the malformed JSON and waits for the response.

Sable gate for #2714 (TASK-005) at b8ad62e. Scope: the owner-scoped runtime authorization, the stored-instance-ID path, and the body's claims.

HOLD: CodeQL is red at this head. Check run 121214574510 reports one new high alert, js/sql-injection (alert 1346), at backend/routes/registry/helpers.ts:560. The sink is Gateway.findById(gatewayId) in resolveGatewayForRequest, and gatewayId is req.query.gatewayId passed through unvalidated from runtime.ts. Two things are true:

  • The same finding is already open on main (refs/heads/main, same location), so the flow predates this PR. This PR re-surfaces it because it rewrites the runtime route that carries the flow.
  • The reachable exposure is narrow. resolveGatewayForRequest rejects non-admins before the lookup, so only a global admin can supply the value. An object value (gatewayId[$ne]=…) still reaches the lookup unvalidated, which is the shape CodeQL flags. I did not run that payload.

Fix (small): accept only a string at the route boundary, for example const gatewayId = typeof req.query.gatewayId === 'string' ? req.query.gatewayId : null;, and do the same for the runtime-logs handler. Then rerun CodeQL. If Lily or Rhea decide to dismiss alert 1346 instead, that decision needs to name the admin gate as the reason and be recorded on the alert. I am not able to make that call from the seat.

Also check: the coderabbit-threads entry reads FAILURE in the rollup, while the three recent runs at b8ad62e show success. Kai should confirm which run is current. The Stale-base merge guard run is CANCELLED and needs a successful twin, as on #2718.

Verified at this head (checks I ran)

  • Owner-scoped authorization. Non-admins need pod access and installedBy === userId. Global admins bypass both checks. The lookup is agentName, podId, exact instanceId, and status != uninstalled, so paused installations stay inspectable by their owner. The body describes this correctly.
  • Stored instance ID. getRequestedInstanceId uses String(...), so object-shaped query values cannot reach the Mongo filter as operators. The old lowercasing normalization is gone. This is a behavior change for any caller that sends a non-stored spelling, and the body discloses it. AgentsHub sends configAgent.instanceId || 'default', which is the stored ID.
  • Rate limit before auth. The 120/min limiter is keyed by IP and runs before auth, as the body says.
  • Audit line. Emitted once on finish with route, pod, agent, instance, caller user ID and outcome. It contains no token and no runtime output.
  • Log bounds. lines is clamped to 1–1000, default 200.
  • Imports. requireAdmin is gone, userHasPodAccess and isGlobalAdminUser are imported and defined, and no leftover reference remains.
  • Tests. registryRuntimeAuthorization.test.js plus routeRateLimitGuard.test.js: 110/110 against real Mongo (the body's 110 count matches). AgentsHub.runtime.test.tsx: 1/1. The test confirms configure, then runtime-status with the stored original-stored-instance ID.

Not run: the body's mutation checks, and a live browser walk. The AgentsHub test mocks AgentCard, so it covers the AgentsHub path, not the card's markup.

Added string validation for explicit gateway selectors in each runtime route at 839b551. Service tests cover rejected input shapes and retain controls for string selection. Restored real MongoDB 7 service suite 102/102 plus route checks 16/16 = 118/118. Removing validation fails six regressions. Scoped production lint and diff checks pass. Fresh CodeQL and CI are required at this head.

Sable gate, #2714 at 839b551: code reads clean; HOLD until CI completes.

  • Non-string gateway selectors return 400 before the pod lookup, the installation lookup, the Gateway lookup and dispatch. The service test covers this on all six routes, with a Gateway.findById spy that must not be called.
  • Gateway selection stays admin-only: an admin reaches the Gateway lookup, and an installer who is not an admin gets 403 with no lookup. The test covers both.
  • The 400 response is returned to any authenticated caller regardless of pod membership, so it reveals nothing about a pod.
  • Non-blocking: the service file makes about 115 requests from one IP under the 120/minute limit. Another case or two will trip the limit inside the suite.
  • CI at this head is still largely in progress or queued, including Backend 1/3 to 3/3, Service x2, Frontend, E2E, CLI and the Analyze jobs.

Gate at 839b551 (Rhea, route authorization and gateway selectors), re-gated from b8ad62e: PASS

Delta read with git diff b8ad62e5a 839b551ba -- <PR files>: runtime.ts and the authorization service test. Nothing else changed.

  • All six routes reject a non-string gatewayId with 400 before any Gateway lookup or dispatch. A query array or an object such as gatewayId[$ne] is refused. A missing or empty value keeps the old null behaviour.
  • The 400 check runs after the auth middleware, so it adds no unauthenticated path. It does run before the pod-access check, but the response reveals nothing about pod existence.
  • Gateway selection stays admin-only inside resolveGatewayForRequest, which is unchanged.
  • The new tests cover the admin 404 and owner 403 string-selector policy, and the non-string refusal with zero lookups and zero dispatch.

Failing check at this head: coderabbit-threads. CI and CodeQL were not re-read by me, and they are the press's to confirm.

Not run locally.

Addressed #2714 (comment) at 702e6f7. Instance-ID objects are rejected with 400 before coercion; audit uses a non-throwing fallback. Four POST-route HTTP regressions await the response and verify safe audit output. Removing the input validation fails all four.

Addressed #2714 (comment) at 702e6f7. The route supplies only the installation account tag. A shared exact-tag filter is used by both Kubernetes and Docker adapters. Tests cover own and peer tags, diagnostic mentions, suffixes, and a tag quoted inside another account's content. Restoring substring filtering fails four adapter cases.

Validation: isolated MongoDB 7 service 106/106 plus route checks 16/16 = 122/122; adapter suites 37/37. Frontend files are unchanged from the preceding 14/14 validation. Scoped production lint has no errors; diff check passes.

Gate at 702e6f7 (Rhea, route authorization and log isolation), re-gated from 839b551: PASS

Delta read with git diff 839b551ba 702e6f7a7 -- <PR files>. Eight source files changed.

  • runtime.ts: an object-valued instanceId now throws a 400 inside each handler's try block. The catch maps error.status, so the response is 400. The audit path catches the same throw and logs invalid, not the object.
  • Log isolation: buildRuntimeLogFilters returns only the account tag, and filterRuntimeAccountLogs keeps lines whose [commonly] [tag] matches exactly. The K8s and Docker paths now share that filter. The options default is {}, so the Docker path does not throw when no options are passed.

Behaviour change for the press to note, not a blocker: a line from the requested account without the [commonly] [account] tag is now hidden from the logs view. Before, substring matching kept it. Untagged gateway errors will no longer show in this view.

Authorization order and gateway selection are unchanged from the 839b551 gate.

Not run locally. CI, CodeQL and CodeRabbit were not re-read by me at this head.

Sable gate, #2714 at 702e6f7: code reads clean; HOLD until CI completes.

  • Malformed instance objects return 400 through the existing status-aware catch. The audit line uses a non-throwing marker ('invalid'), so no object reaches the log.
  • The Docker log path was unfiltered before this change, so every installed agent saw the shared gateway's logs. It now applies the same exact-account-tag filter as Kubernetes. This is a real fix, not only a refactor.
  • Log filtering is intentionally stricter: lines without a [commonly] [account] tag are dropped, including continuation lines and untagged gateway errors. The PR body states this. Please confirm the gateway tags every line it emits for an account; otherwise owners will see empty log views during failures.
  • The body matches the diff: runtime router, helpers, shared adapter log filter, baseline, and tests.
  • Non-blocking: the service file now makes about 100 requests from one IP under the 120/minute limit.
  • CI at this head had 8 checks still in progress or queued, including Backend 1/3 to 3/3, Service x2, Frontend and E2E.

Sable gate, #2714 at 702e6f7: code PASS.

  • CI is complete and green at this head. The two cancelled entries are superseded duplicates, and their successful twins are present.
  • Malformed instance objects, the audit marker, the Docker log filter and the stored-spelling lookup are covered by tests, and the body describes them accurately.
  • Residual trade-off, not a code blocker: log views now omit untagged lines, including gateway errors without an account tag (channel.ts:461 and :523 at pin 5d88a3f1). The PR body states this. It is an accepted product trade-off for the press, and it stays visible.
