What changed

TASK-540: attach --memory-from previously installed and greeted the pod before the owner memory API could refuse the copy. Move the copy into POST /api/registry/install, before identity joins, AgentInstallation creation and intro. The same check runs before returning a resumed BYO installation.

  • The CLI sends memoryFrom: {agentName, instanceId} with the install request and consumes the server's memoryCopy result. It no longer performs the fallible copy after install.
  • The server requires source ownership across all retained source installations and target ownership across all target installations, or registry ownership for a new target. It also refuses a foreign target principal behind an owned registry.
  • A non-private or independently populated target refuses. Identical content is idempotent. The conditional write checks the legacy content mirror, canonical text, visibility and revision, preserving a concurrent first write.
  • A capability GET at /api/registry/install/memory-handoff runs before CLI publishing/installing. An older server's 404 or absent capability refuses before mutation, so it cannot silently ignore the new field. Deploy the backend before distributing the CLI. No version line changes.

The unused CLI copy module and its unit test are deleted. Owner-editor HTTP regressions use a test-only fixture under backend/tests/utils; attach has no client-side copy fallback. The existing owner memory editor API remains available. This change protects memory handoff refusals before installation and greeting; it does not make publishing, installation, token issuance and local token-file persistence one distributed transaction. A later transport/token/disk failure can still require retry. The self-serve registry row is claimed first under its unique name, before private memory can be written. On a failed copy, cleanup removes only the row created by this request, only while its owner/id/revision still match and no retained installation uses the name. Each handoff touches the persisted registry revision before copying, so another in-flight handoff prevents cleanup from releasing its claim; a stale reader whose claim was deleted refuses before copying. A concurrent handoff can therefore leave the registry reservation behind, deliberately, instead of exposing private memory. A manifest explicitly published by the CLI before the install request can still remain after refusal. Also, the copy precedes getOrCreateAgentUser and ensureAgentInPod: a later identity 409 or pod-join 403 can leave the copied memory (and registry row) without an installation. This is not rolled back; a retry recognizes the identical snapshot. The HTTP test now observes that residual using an actual human username collision, without mocking the identity service. Existing installations are preserved, never rolled back or adopted.

Proof

  • CLI attach suite: 81/81.
  • HTTP + Mongo handoff suite: 36/36, including actual CLI → HTTP collision refusal and successful retry, zero installation/pod join/greeting on refusal, foreign source/target principal, mixed source ownership, non-private/nonempty target, concurrent legacy write, successful copy before greeting and idempotent resume. Added malformed source/non-BYO/missing-adapter refusal, fresh target with foreign registry publisher, unauthenticated capability GET, self-serve registry count and later identity-refusal memory residue. The successful greeting boundary is stubbed; refusal cases spy on the producer and query actual Mongo installation/membership state.
  • Mutation: removing the new-install copy call fails the collision test with installation count 1 instead of 0. Restored production source before the final run.
  • Backend source typecheck and targeted source lint pass (install.ts retains three existing max-len warnings). git diff --check passes.

Review

Tier 2: security ownership/CAS and code ordering. No press or merge requested until both exact-head gates and CI pass. Production attach re-walk remains after deployment.

Review correction

Rhea and Sable were right about the ordering residue. My original tests did not measure the registry row or the post-copy identity-refusal path. Those are now measured and distinguished above. Old security PASS and code HOLD at 12e236f are superseded when this fix moves the head. Fresh exact-head gates remain required.

Security correction after ced873c

My deferred-save change introduced a cross-owner race. I had treated the requester matching their own unsaved registry document as ownership evidence, without measuring a concurrent name claimant. Rhea and Sable were right. A real HTTP interleaving reproduced a second owner installing the name and obtaining 200 from the private-memory editor API. Claim-before-copy now makes that competing install 409 and the private read 403. A second interleaving tests refusal cleanup while another same-owner handoff is writing; removing the cleanup revision predicate kills that regression. Production source was restored after the mutation. The later identity-refusal memory residue remains documented and claimed to the original registry owner.

Non-blocking note retained at reviewed head 8da1050

CodeRabbit review 5644558917, Other comments (Minor), install.ts:372–375: an earlier invalid-environment refusal leaves the newly claimed ephemeral registry row because it returns before copy/catch cleanup. Independently measured with and without memoryFrom: HTTP400 invalid_environment_spec, registry1, installation0, target memory absent in both arms (2/2 probe cases pass). This is a name reservation residue, not a private-memory leak. The temporary probe was restored without a head move. Defer the ordering improvement and committed regression to the next content move, preserving both current-head PASS gates. Persist after the earlier refusal checks but still BEFORE copyMemory, and retain the existing revision cleanup fence.

Move owner-authorized memory copy and its conditional write into install,
before joining or greeting a pod. Check capability before mutation when the
CLI talks to an older server. Preserve existing installs on refused retries.

Walkthrough

The CLI now requests memory handoff through the registry install endpoint. The backend validates ownership and target state, then copies memory before continuing installation. Install responses include the copy result, and the route preserves selected refusal statuses.

Changes: Install-Time Memory Handoff

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and copy handoff memory
backend/services/installHandoffMemory.ts
The service validates the BYO source and ownership of source and target installations. It rejects conflicting target identity or memory, recognizes empty and already-copied sources, and conditionally writes private memory with provenance.
Run handoff during installation
backend/routes/registry/install.ts, backend/__tests__/service/byo-handoff-memory.test.js, backend/__tests__/utils/memoryOwnerCopy.mjs
The route exposes an authenticated capability endpoint, claims registry names, and runs the memory copy for new and resumed installations. Responses include the copy result, and selected refusal statuses are preserved. Tests cover refusal cases, ownership, claim cleanup, copy-before-greeting behavior, retries, and the absence of a partial installation after refusal.
Request server-side handoff
cli/src/commands/agent.js, cli/__tests__/attach.test.mjs, cli/__tests__/handoff-memory.test.mjs, cli/README.md
The CLI checks server support before attach, sends the source identity with the install request, and reads the copy result from the response. Tests and documentation cover the updated flow; client-side handoff tests were removed.

@Rhea security, then @Sable code: Tier 2 review requested at head 12e236f once current-head CI is green.

Attack the claim that a refused hosted-memory attach leaves no new installation, pod membership or greeting. Check source/target ownership (including a foreign principal behind an owned registry), legacy/canonical concurrent writes, existing-install resume, and older-server refusal before publishing/installing. Local CLI 81/81 and HTTP+Mongo 22/22 pass. The mutation that removes the pre-install copy produces one unwanted installation and fails the regression.

This is not a distributed transaction across later token/network/disk failures. No press or merge requested yet.

#2728 TASK-540 security gate at 12e236f (base main)

Scope: ownership and races in the install-time memory handoff, and whether a refused handoff mutates state before refusing. The PR's files: backend/services/installHandoffMemory.ts (new), backend/routes/registry/install.ts, cli/src/commands/agent.js, and the CLI/backend tests and README. Base computed against origin/main at 734b7a09d; the PR-scoped delta is 6 files, +283/-44. (An earlier origin/main ref gave a whole-tree diff that included performRun changes from main; those are not this PR's.)

Ownership: holds

  • Source: the source identity must have at least one non-uninstalled installation, and every one must be installedBy the requester. Mixed ownership is refused (403).
  • Target: every installation of the target identity, including uninstalled rows, must be the requester's. A fresh target needs registryOwner === userId. The registry owner is agent.publisher.userId, which for the self-serve path is the requester who just created the row.
  • Target principal: an existing bot User must have botMetadata.ownerUserId === userId, and its agentName/instanceId must match. A legacy principal without an owner is refused when there is no target install. The copy refuses everything the install route's identity probe (409) refuses, so the copy cannot write into a foreign identity.
  • Content: only long_term is copied, and it is written private. Existing non-private target memory is refused (409).

Races: holds

  • Concurrent first copies into one target: the write is an upsert guarded by content, sections.long_term.* and $exists filters. The unique index turns a losing insert into 11000, which becomes 409 "retry attach". Two owners cannot both pass the fresh-target check, since only the registry owner passes.
  • Source read is not CAS'd, so the copy can be a slightly stale snapshot. Harmless: the source is the requester's own memory.
  • A copy that succeeds and is followed by a failed install leaves memory in the target with no installation. A retry sees identical content and returns already-copied. Acceptable.

Ordering: the copy is not before every mutation (non-blocking, but the claim needs correcting)

On the self-serve path (the agent is not in the registry, which is the normal commonly agent attach case for a fresh BYO name), POST /install runs AgentRegistry.create (install.ts ~line 357, publisher: { userId }) before copyInstallHandoffMemory (~line 383 / 695). A refusal (403 foreign source, 409 different target memory, 409 identity conflict) therefore leaves an ephemeral registry row owned by the requester. No installation, no pod join, and no greeting happen, so the PR's stated invariant holds for those. The registry row is the one residue.

The route already fixed this exact defect for the hosted cap: the comment above the hosted check says "a refused second hosted install used to leave that row behind with no installation (QA walk, 2026-10-16)". The handoff check should sit beside that check, or the row should be removed on refusal.

The tests do not catch it. byo-handoff-memory.test.js asserts AgentInstallation.countDocuments after each refusal, and its registry row is a pre-seeded fixture (line 36), not the route-created one. Add an AgentRegistry.countDocuments assertion on the self-serve refusal path.

Impact: no privilege or data exposure. The row is owned by the requester and is excluded from the marketplace. It is a state residue on refused attaches.

Capability gate and CLI: holds

  • The CLI calls GET /api/registry/install/memory-handoff before publish or install when memoryFrom is set. An older server returns 404, so the attach stops before any mutation. The CLI also throws if memoryCopy is missing from the install response, which the capability check makes unreachable on a new server.
  • The POST sends memoryFrom only with resumeExisting: true. A non-CLI client sending memoryFrom into an already-installed pod gets 400 with no copy.
  • copyInstallHandoffMemory returns undefined when memoryFrom is absent, so ordinary installs are unchanged.
  • Refusals map to 400/403/409 and other errors stay 500. The 403 message names no secret.

Non-blocking

  • The registry-row residue above. Move the handoff check before the self-serve create, or delete the row on refusal, and add the registry count assertion.
  • The 403 "target identity belongs to another owner" gives a logged-in user an existence signal for a bot username. The install route's existing 409 already gives the same signal, so this is not new.

Not checked here

  • No local test run. Verdict is from reading the diff at 12e236f and the referenced files.
  • CI is queued at this head, per Sprint Impl. The press should wait for it.

Refuse only unadoptable human rows before copying memory.

The handoff must query the username without the isBot filter. Otherwise, an ordinary non-bot row can still receive memory before getOrCreateAgentUser rejects the install.

Do not reject every non-bot row. isAgentOwnedRow accepts legacy rows with the derived agent email, botType, or botMetadata.agentName. The CommonJS compatibility export makes AgentIdentityService.isAgentOwnedRow callable.

Suggested fix
-  const principal = await User.findOne({ username, isBot: true }).select('botMetadata').lean();
-  if (principal && ((principal.botMetadata?.ownerUserId
+  const principal = await User.findOne({ username })
+    .select('isBot email botType botMetadata').lean();
+  const isUnadoptableHuman = !!principal && !principal.isBot
+    && !AgentIdentityService.isAgentOwnedRow(
+      principal,
+      `${username}@${AgentIdentityService.AGENT_ADDRESS_DOMAIN}`,
+    );
+  if (principal && (isUnadoptableHuman || ((principal.botMetadata?.ownerUserId
       && String(principal.botMetadata.ownerUserId) !== String(userId))
     || (!principal.botMetadata?.ownerUserId && !targetInstalls.length)
     || (principal.botMetadata?.agentName && principal.botMetadata.agentName !== resolvedType)
-    || (principal.botMetadata?.instanceId && principal.botMetadata.instanceId !== instanceId))) {
+    || (principal.botMetadata?.instanceId && principal.botMetadata.instanceId !== instanceId)))) {

Add tests for both an ordinary non-agent collision, which must leave no AgentMemory row, and an agent-marked legacy row, which must not be rejected solely because isBot is false.

Sable code-leg gate for #2728 (TASK-540) at 12e236f. Scope: ordering of the memory copy against installation, pod join and greeting, the CLI's capability check, and the body's refusal claims. Rhea owns the ownership and CAS leg.

HOLD: one open CodeRabbit thread, and two code points to settle.

  1. coderabbit-threads is failing. One thread is unanswered, on backend/__tests__/service/byo-handoff-memory.test.js around line 88. Its ask is to cover the helper's malformed memoryFrom, non-BYO runtime and missing-adapter refusals, the new target under a foreign registry publisher (the branch that uses !targetInstalls.length), and an unauthenticated GET to the capability route. Each thread needs a fix or a not fixing: <reason> or false positive: <reason> reply, per the external-review rule. The foreign-publisher branch is the ownership check, so it should have a test before merge, not after.

  2. The copy runs before identity refusals. In backend/routes/registry/install.ts, copyMemory() at about line 695 runs before getOrCreateAgentUser and ensureAgentInPod, and those can return 409 (AGENT_USERNAME_CONFLICT, AGENT_IDENTITY_CONFLICT) or 403 (outsider_grant_non_native_agent_join) after the copy has written memory. The result is a copied memory row with no installation, pod join or greeting. The PR's claim, "a refusal leaves no installation, pod join or greeting", is accurate. The claim "refuses before mutation" is not, for this narrow case. The helper's own principal check covers the foreign-owner and name-mismatch cases first, so the residual window is small. Either reorder the copy after the identity probe (accepting that identity writes then precede the copy) or state the residual in the body. A retry is idempotent, since the second copy returns already-copied.

  3. Dead CLI module. cli/src/lib/handoff-memory.js now has no caller. Only its own test, cli/__tests__/handoff-memory.test.mjs, imports it. Delete both, or name the reason to keep them.

Verified at this head

  • The install route rejects memory handoffs with 400, 403 or 409 before any installation row is created. The helper's own refusals all run before its first write.
  • The copy runs before the pod join and greeting, and the resume path copies before returning the resumed installation.
  • The CLI checks the capability endpoint before publish or install, and an older server's 404 or absent capability refuses before any mutation. The CLI no longer performs the copy after install.
  • memoryCopy appears in both the new-install and resumed responses, so the CLI's installResult.memoryCopy check cannot fire against a current server.
  • The error-status change in the catch maps only 400, 403 and 409 and leaves other errors as 500.
  • Checks: all pass except coderabbit-threads.

Not run: the body's CLI 81/81 and HTTP 22/22 suites. Those are the author's numbers, and I did not re-run them in this review.

Re-gate after the thread is answered, item 2 is settled, and item 3 is resolved.

GATE: HOLD

Cover malformed and unsupported handoffs, foreign publishers and capability
auth. A refused self-serve memory copy no longer leaves a registry row.
Remove the obsolete production CLI copy module; owner-editor regressions use
a test-only HTTP fixture.

Document and test the residual: later identity or pod-join refusal can leave
copied memory without an installation. This flow is not transactional.

Rhea and Sable were right. I reproduced the self-serve registry residue (count 1 instead of 0 on refusal), and the post-copy identity residue. My original instrumentation did not measure either row.

At ced873c:

  • CodeRabbit review comment 4371685604 at byo-handoff-memory.test.js:88 is fixed. Added HTTP tests for malformed memoryFrom, non-BYO runtime, missing adapter, a fresh target under another registry publisher (specifically reaches the helper's ownership refusal), and unauthenticated capability GET. Refusal cases query actual installation and memory state.
  • Self-serve registry persistence is deferred until the memory copy succeeds. The regression now asserts zero registry and installation rows after a refused copy. A positive control proves a successful handoff persists both.
  • Sable item 2 is resolved by naming the residual, as offered: getOrCreateAgentUser/ensureAgentInPod can refuse after memory was copied, leaving memory without an installation. This is measured with a real human username collision and documented in the PR body and CLI README. No rollback of potentially concurrently edited memory is attempted. A preceding explicit CLI publish can also remain. The claim is confined to memory-copy refusal before installation/join/greeting, not a transaction across all attach operations.
  • Deleted cli/src/lib/handoff-memory.js and its CLI test. Owner-editor API regressions retain a test-only orchestration fixture in backend/tests/utils/memoryOwnerCopy.mjs; no production attach caller or fallback remains.

Validation: HTTP+Mongo 33/33, CLI attach 81/81, source typecheck and targeted source lint pass (three existing install.ts length warnings), diff check passes. Current-head CI is pending.

The old security PASS and code HOLD at 12e236f are superseded. @Rhea security re-stamp, then @Sable code re-gate requested at exact ced873c once CI settles. Please explicitly rule on the documented later-identity residual. No press or merge requested.

#2728 TASK-540 security re-gate at ced873c (base main)

Last gated head: 12e236f (PASS, review 5644294668, with a non-blocking note that a self-serve refusal left a registry row). The delta is one commit, ced873c, touching 5 files: backend/routes/registry/install.ts (the change that matters), the two handoff test files, the test helper, and cli/README.md. Measured against the PR's own files.

Verdict: HOLD. The deferred-registry change fixes the residue, but it opens a race and removes the ownership check for fresh self-serve names.

1. Deferred registry: the copy now writes target memory before the name is claimed (install.ts:371-372, 700-701)

For a self-serve attach with memoryFrom, the registry row is constructed with new AgentRegistry(...), not saved. copyMemory() runs, then agent.save() runs. AgentRegistry.agentName is unique: true (AgentRegistry.ts:122). Before this commit the row was created first, so a second requester on the same fresh name failed on the unique index before any memory was copied.

Now the window is: the copy has written A's hosted long-term memory under name X, and A's registry row does not yet exist. If requester B creates X through the ordinary self-serve path in that window, B's row wins. A's save() then fails with 11000, and A gets an error. A's memory is already in X's AgentMemory. B owns X and can install it, which exposes A's hosted memory to B. The window is one request's copy-to-save interval, so it is narrow, but nothing in the code closes it.

2. The fresh-target ownership check is now tautological on the self-serve path (installHandoffMemory.ts:42; install.ts:388-390)

registryOwner is agent.publisher?.userId. In deferred mode agent is the unsaved doc, and its publisher was set to the requester two lines earlier. So String(registryOwner) !== String(userId) is always false for the self-serve path. The check that a fresh target needs registry ownership no longer tests anything there. The tests don't catch it: refuses a fresh target whose registry publisher is someone else (byo-handoff-memory.test.js) edits an existing row, so it goes through the resume branch, not the deferred one.

Fixing item 1 by claiming first restores the independent check, because the DB row then carries the owner.

Suggested fix (the pattern the hosted cap already uses)

  • Create the registry row before copyMemory(), as before the commit.
  • If the copy refuses or throws, delete the row only when publisher.userId is the requester and no AgentInstallation exists for that name. The earlier review suggested this.
  • The existing test a refused self-serve handoff creates no registry row asserts that. It passes today only because the row is deferred. Once the row is claimed first, it needs the cleanup to pass.
  • Add a test that a fresh name's copy with a registry row owned by another user is refused, reached through the self-serve branch.

Non-blocking, unchanged from my earlier note

  • Identity refusal after the copy still leaves memory under a name the requester could not claim (the new records the residual memory... test documents it). The fix in item 1 should cover this too, since the row deletion and memory cleanup can share one path.

Checked and holds

  • The malformed and unsupported memoryFrom cases refuse with 400 before any write (the it.each block).
  • Target memory CAS and the unique-index 11000 mapping are unchanged (installHandoffMemory.ts:60-95).
  • The memory-handoff capability probe returns 401 to an unauthenticated request, and the new test asserts that.

Sable code gate at ced873c. CI was still pending at filing, so this verdict stands on the code read alone.

HOLD: the deferred registry row opens a name race, which is the same defect Rhea reported in the security leg. I confirmed it in the code and agree with her fix.

Where it comes from:

  • backend/routes/registry/install.ts:371-372: when memoryFrom is set, the self-serve branch builds new AgentRegistry(registryData) and does not persist it. The earlier AgentRegistry.getByName(agentName) at line 258 is the only existence check, and it ran before this construction.
  • copyMemory() (~line 700) writes AgentMemory keyed on (agentName, instanceId). That write lands before the row is saved, so a concurrent self-serve create on the same name can claim the row and find the copied memory.
  • The owner check in installHandoffMemory.ts is vacuous for a fresh target. registryOwner is agent.publisher.userId, which is the requester, because the unsaved document was built with the requester as publisher. So String(registryOwner) !== String(userId) is always false. The copy's only real gate is then skipped.
  • If the other user saves first, A's agent.save() at line 701 runs after the copy has already written memory, and the name is then owned by someone else.

Requested change (same as Rhea's, which I agree with): claim the row before the copy, and on any refusal delete the row only when it was created by this request and has no installation. Keep the fresh-target owner check meaningful by running it against the persisted row.

Residual, not a hold on its own: a later identity refusal still leaves copied memory. That is documented in the PR body, and it is the same class as the ordering point I raised earlier.

Serialize self-serve registry ownership with the memory handoff.

A concurrent request can persist the unique agentName registry row while this request still holds an unsaved registry document owned by another user. The handoff then validates the unsaved publisher.userId, writes private memory under { agentName, instanceId }, and only afterward reaches agent.save(), which fails on the unique index. The other user's installation can then read that shared memory through the runtime memory endpoint.

Revalidate the persisted registry owner and serialize name reservation with the handoff write. A failed reservation or handoff must not leave memory that another owner can use. Add an interleaving test for this case.

The deferred save in ced873c introduced a cross-owner name-claim race.
A real HTTP interleaving reproduced an outsider installing the name and
reading its private memory. Persist the unique registry claim first.

On refusal, delete only this request's unused owned claim. Revision touches
fence cleanup against another in-flight handoff, so a stale reader cannot
write after its claim is released. Retain claims once copying succeeds.
Later identity-refusal memory residue remains documented.

Rhea and Sable were right. My deferred-save fix in ced873c introduced the race: I compared the requester against their own unsaved registry document without measuring a concurrent name claimant. Real HTTP reproduced the competing owner installing the name and getting 200 from its private-memory editor endpoint.

Fixed at exact head 8da1050:

  • Persist the uniquely named registry row before copying private memory. The competing install is now 409 and its private read is 403. This addresses CodeRabbit comment 4371778356 at install.ts:701 as well.
  • On a failed copy, remove only the claim created by this request, with matching id, owner, ephemeral status and revision, and only if no retained installation uses the name. Existing/published claims are preserved.
  • Cleanup also needs an in-flight-reader fence. Every memory handoff touches the persisted registry revision before copying. If another handoff has touched it, cleanup retains the claim. If cleanup has already deleted it, a stale handoff cannot touch it and refuses before writing. A second HTTP interleaving pins this: the first handoff refuses while another waits to copy; cleanup keeps the name, a competing owner is refused, and the second handoff completes. Removing the cleanup revision predicate fails the regression (registry count 0 instead of 1).
  • Cleanup lookup failure keeps the claim and returns retryable 503. Successful copies keep the claim. The later identity/pod-join refusal memory residue remains documented and bound to that owner; there is no blanket transaction or rollback promise.

Validation: HTTP+Mongo 36/36 after restoring the mutant; backend source typecheck and targeted lint pass (three pre-existing length warnings), diff check passes. CLI production code is unchanged from its 81/81 run; the HTTP suite also exercises actual CLI attach. README, PR body and commit message carry the correction.

Old HOLDs at ced873c are superseded. @Rhea security, then @Sable code: fresh review requested at 8da1050 once current-head CI settles. No press or merge requested.

#2728 TASK-540 security re-gate at 8da1050 (base main)

Last gated head: ced873c (HOLD, the deferred registry row opens a race). The delta is one commit, 8da1050, "fix(attach): claim registry ownership before copying memory". It touches backend/routes/registry/install.ts, the handoff test file, and cli/README.md.

Verdict: PASS. The race from ced873c is closed, and the refusal cleanup is fenced. CI is still pending at this head.

What changed

  • The self-serve registry row is created before the copy again (install.ts ~370), so the unique index on AgentRegistry.agentName is the claim. A second requester on the same fresh name fails before any memory is written.
  • copyMemory() first takes the claim with findOneAndUpdate({_id, __v: expected}, {$inc: {__v: 1}}). If the row is gone or its revision moved, it throws 409 and writes nothing. A stale reader therefore cannot write memory under a claim that was released.
  • The copy's fresh-target ownership check now compares against a persisted row (agent.publisher.userId). That check is meaningful again.
  • On a refusal before handoffFinished, the catch deletes the row only when: this request created it, its __v still matches, publisher.userId is the requester, ephemeral: true, and no AgentInstallation exists for that name. If the cleanup itself fails, the response is 503 and the claim is kept.

Checked and holds

  • Race: the copy cannot run for a name the requester does not hold. The foreign-owner branch at install.ts:269 refuses any other user's ephemeral row, so a competing requester cannot install or read the name after the claim.
  • Cleanup fence: a second in-flight handoff by the same owner touches the row before its copy, so the first request's cleanup (which checks __v) leaves it in place. The new test "refusal cleanup preserves a claim used by another in-flight handoff" covers this.
  • Refusal paths that happen before the copy write nothing (malformed memoryFrom, ownership, identity probe before the copy). The copy itself writes last and does not fail after writing, so a refusal after the copy has no memory to undo.

Non-blocking residual (name it in the body)

  • A failure after handoffFinished = true (identity refusal at the 409 for agent_username_conflict, or a later installation error) keeps the requester's ephemeral row and the copied memory, with no installation. The name is held by the requester: other users cannot claim it, and cannot install it (install.ts:269). It is a self-held name with stale memory, not an exposure. The earlier note on this residual still stands.
  • The cleanup counts installations by agentName alone, which is conservative and correct.

Not checked here

  • CI at this head: backend tests, E2E, CodeRabbit, and detect-secrets are still pending. The press waits for them.
  • The test suites were not run locally. The verdict rests on reading the diff and the referenced files (install.ts, installHandoffMemory.ts, and the new test names).

Sable code-leg gate at 8da1050. CI was still pending when I filed (16 of 19 checks pending), so this verdict stands on the code read and a clean-worktree test run. The press should wait for the checks to finish.

What changed since ced873c (my HOLD, review 5644444798): the registry row is created before the memory copy, not deferred. The copy now takes a revision-fenced claim on that row first. On refusal, the request deletes the row only when it created it, is still at its own revision, has no installation, and is ephemeral. A cleanup failure returns 503 and keeps the claim. This closes the race I reported.

Checked:

  • The race is closed. AgentRegistry.create runs before copyInstallHandoffMemory, so the fresh-target owner check now compares the requester with a persisted publisher and is no longer vacuous.
  • Cleanup is scoped. deleteOne matches _id, the claimed __v, publisher.userId, and ephemeral: true, and it skips any name with an installation. A claim another in-flight handoff has touched is kept because the fence bumps __v.
  • Tests: backend/__tests__/service/byo-handoff-memory.test.js at 8da1050 in a clean worktree, Node 22, real Mongo: 36 of 36 pass. The new cases are the claim-before-owner race, cleanup preserving a claim used by another handoff, the 503 on a failed cleanup, and retention after success.
  • Mutant: I inverted the cleanup condition so no refusal cleans up. Two tests fail: "keeps the name claimed and reports retryable failure…" and "a refused self-serve handoff creates no registry row". I restored the file and confirmed it with diff -q.

Non-blocking notes:

  • For an existing published agent, copyMemory also bumps that row's __v on each handoff. The fence is correct, and the cleanup only ever matches a claim this request made. It is harmless but worth knowing.
  • The residual is unchanged and documented: a later identity or pod-join refusal can leave copied memory. This is the same ordering class I raised before.

Environment note: I had to run npm ci in the gate worktree. The shared backend node_modules was missing @openuidev/lang-core, which is declared in the lockfile.

372-375: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Early refusals now leave an orphan ephemeral registry row.

AgentRegistry.create now runs at Line 372 for every self-serve install. Many refusals still run after it. They return directly and bypass the catch cleanup:

  • Line 487: invalid environment spec, 400.
  • Line 502: webhook sole-installer refusal, 403.
  • Lines 594 and 604: outsider-join and cloud-entitlement refusals, 403.
  • The existingInPod and foreignInstall refusals.

For these paths:

  • A request without memoryFrom never sets handoffRegistryClaim, so nothing releases the row.
  • A request with memoryFrom sets handoffRegistryClaim, but the early return skips the catch cleanup.

The lifetime-ownership rule at Line 271 then returns 409 agent_name_taken to every other user for that name. The comment at Lines 305-308 records that an earlier QA walk found this same orphan-row defect. The removed if (deferredRegistry) await agent.save(); deferred the write until after these checks. This change reintroduces the defect and extends it to the checks listed above.

You do not need to create the row early to fix the earlier race review. Persisting the row immediately before copyMemory() still claims the name before any private memory is written. Keep the unsaved document until then. If save() hits E11000, it fails before any memory write.

Add a regression test. Send a self-serve install that passes the pod and name checks but fails validateEnvironmentMcpEntries, and assert AgentRegistry.countDocuments({ agentName }) is 0.

Proposed fix
-      agent = await AgentRegistry.create(registryData);
-      if (req.body.memoryFrom !== undefined) {
-        handoffRegistryClaim = { id: agent._id, agentName: agent.agentName, userId, version: agent.__v };
-      }
+      agent = new AgentRegistry(registryData);
+      deferredRegistry = true;

Declare let deferredRegistry = false; next to hostedCapChecked. Then persist the row directly before the copy:

+    if (deferredRegistry) {
+      await agent.save();
+      if (req.body.memoryFrom !== undefined) {
+        handoffRegistryClaim = { id: agent._id, agentName: agent.agentName, userId, version: agent.__v };
+      }
+    }
     const memoryCopy = await copyMemory();

CodeRabbit review 5644558917, Other comments (Minor), install.ts:372–375: confirmed. Two temporary HTTP+Mongo probes, with and without memoryFrom, both return 400 invalid_environment_spec while leaving one owned registry row, zero installations and no target memory. Both probes pass and were restored; head remains 8da1050.

Not fixing on this reviewed head: Rhea security PASS 5644527478 and Sable code PASS 5644540506 are both valid here. The minor name-reservation residue is recorded in the PR body and task; defer the change to the next content move. Persisting the claim after earlier checks but BEFORE copyMemory is the direction, retaining the concurrent-handoff cleanup fence. The distinction matters: saving AFTER the copy was the security regression already fixed.

@lily-shen please press #2728 at exact head 8da1050.

Both current-head gates PASS: Rhea security review 5644527478 and Sable code review 5644540506. Sable independently ran the 36-case HTTP/Mongo suite and killed the cleanup mutant. All applicable current-head checks now pass, including real-service shards, backend/frontend/CLI, E2E, CodeQL, CodeRabbit and coderabbit-threads; PR is OPEN/CLEAN. Skipped: Release Branch Guard.

Two non-blocking residuals are retained on this reviewed head:

  • A later identity/pod-join refusal can retain the owner's claimed registry row and copied memory, as accepted in the gates.
  • CodeRabbit's Minor early-validation note: invalid environment returns 400 with registry1/install0/no target memory, measured in two temporary probes (with/without memoryFrom). This name-reservation residue is documented in the body and comment fix(attach): refuse memory handoffs before installing #2728 (comment). It is deferred to the next content move to preserve both PASS gates. Any ordering fix must save the name claim BEFORE copying and keep the revision fence.

Head is unchanged. After merge/deploy, the refused-attach production re-walk is still owed. No seat merge.
