fix(cli): read-only git refuses the modifier forms of the gpg placeholders, and checks abbreviated or detached format options (TASK-296) - #2767
Conversation
…lders, and checks abbreviated or detached format options (TASK-296) checkFormat matched only a bare %G. Git also reads a %G placeholder behind a +, - or space modifier (%+G?, %-GG, % GS) as the same placeholder, so a workspace seat's log or show could still run gpg on a signed commit. The check now matches an optional modifier. Probed on git 2.54.0: of all 95 printable characters, only those three expand %<c>G? to the signature status. The new control shows bare git running the stub gpg for each of them. Sable's non-blocking note on #2746: the guard should not depend on git rejecting `--form=` and `--pret=`. An abbreviation is now checked like the full option name. A --format with no `=` is refused, so the next argument can never be taken as its format. A bare --pretty still means medium. git 2.54.0 rejects every abbreviation and a bare --format, so those tests pin the validator alone. Format option checks cli/src/lib/git-readonly.js, cli/__tests__/git-readonly.test.mjs |
checkFormat recognizes supported abbreviated options and %G placeholders preceded by +, -, or a space. It refuses --format without an inline value. Tests cover these refusals and accepted formats. |

Gate for #2767 (TASK-296) at head 6cd9825, for @wren.
Checked the exact head in a clean worktree. The checkFormat diff touches only cli/src/lib/git-readonly.js and cli/__tests__/git-readonly.test.mjs. npm test -- __tests__/git-readonly.test.mjs passes 41/41.
1. Does the pattern cover every modifier form? Yes. SIGNATURE_PLACEHOLDER = /%[-+ ]?G/ matches the +, - and space modifiers. Probed through readonlyGitArgv and all refused with the %G reason: --format=%+G?, --format=%-G?, --format=% G?, --format=%+GS, --format=%-GG, --format=% GK, --format=%C(red)%+G?, --pretty=format:%h %-GF, --prett=%G?. The regex runs over the whole value, so a placeholder after a padding or colour prefix is caught too. --format=%x47 is allowed; it prints a literal G and runs nothing.
2. Is anything git 2.54 accepts newly refused? No, not in the cases I could find. Real git 2.54.0 in a scratch repo:
log --format %H(separate argument),log --pretty %H,log --pr,log --form=%handlog --show-signatureare all rejected by git itself with "unrecognized argument". The guard refuses the same set, so nothing git accepts is lost.log --pretty=ONELINEis accepted by git and allowed by the guard (lowercased lookup).blame --pr fproduces the same output asblame --progress f. The guard allows it and the test pins it, soblame --prstill means--progress.
3. Can the bare --format refusal catch a real option? It refuses only what git already rejects. Git 2.54 has no separate-argument --format <fmt> form, so the refusal costs no working usage. The usability note in my earlier draft was wrong on this point.
Mutation checks (throwaway worktree, restored, git status clean afterwards):
SIGNATURE_PLACEHOLDERchanged to/%G/: 2 tests fail, the "control" case with%+G?/%-GG/% GSand the abbreviation case.- Bare
--formatreturnsnullinstead of refusing: 1 test fails (the "--format never takes the next argument" case).
Nit, not blocking: --format=%%G? is refused, though %% prints a literal % and G? is plain text, so it runs no gpg. The regex matches the %G inside %%G. This is a fail-closed false positive, and no test pins it either way. Fix would be to skip %% pairs before the match, or leave it as is and say so in the comment on SIGNATURE_PLACEHOLDER.

cli/ lane review of #2767 (TASK-296) at 6cd9825, by connector-ops (CTO).
Checked out with git archive 6cd98257 cli, then ran npm ci --ignore-scripts and jest __tests__/git-readonly.test.mjs in node:22: 41 of 41 pass. Both new tests carry a gpg control, so the placeholder forms really do run gpg in bare git.
Mutant: SIGNATURE_PLACEHOLDER reverted to /%G/, the pre-PR behaviour. Both new tests fail (2 failed, 39 passed). Restored afterwards.
Read of checkFormat:
%[-+ ]?Gcovers the three modifier forms git accepts.%%Gis now refused too. That's stricter than needed and harmless.- An abbreviation needs at least
--plus one letter, so--f/--pare checked as the full name. A bare--formator abbreviation is refused instead of taking the next argument, and a bare--prettypasses as medium. No read-only subcommand I know has a bare--f…option that this now refuses by accident.blame --pris covered by its own test. - The behaviour change only narrows: nothing that was refused before is now allowed.
Not verified: CI beyond its green status, and whether other gpg triggers (--show-signature, log.showSignature) are covered, beyond the existing tests in this file.

What
checkFormatincli/src/lib/git-readonly.js(the read-only git aworkspace-trust seat gets, #2746) has two problems:%G. Git reads a%Gplaceholder behind a+,-or space modifier (%+G?,%-GG,% GS) as the same placeholder, so a seat'slogorshowcould still run gpg on a signed commit. That breaks the module's own invariant, "nothing runs gpg". The check is now/%[-+ ]?G/.--form=,--pret=) is now checked exactly like the full option name, the same waycheckLongOptionalready handles--submodule=diff. A--formatwith no=is refused, so the next argument can never become its format. A bare--prettystill meansmedium. Why it is P1: cli-v0.1.181 contains #2746 (
git merge-base --is-ancestor d7978b42c cli-v0.1.181succeeds), and 0.1.181 is npmlatest. The gap is in a published release.Evidence (git 2.54.0)
Every modifier was probed. On an unsigned commit,
git log -1 --format='[%<c>G?]'was run for all 95 printable ASCII characters. Only space,+and-expand to the signature status ([ N],[\nN],[N]). Git consumes one modifier character, so/%[-+ ]?G/covers every form.New real-git control: for each of
%+G?,%-GGand% GS, baregit logon the suite's signed commit runs the stub gpg and leaves the marker. The guarded call is refused and leaves none.--format=%h%+s(a modifier on a harmless placeholder) still runs.git rejects abbreviations and a bare
--formattoday:--form=%h,--pret=oneline,--forma=,--prett=,--pr=and--for=all fail withfatal: unrecognized argument.diff --formatfails withinvalid option. Those tests therefore pin the validator alone, with no positive control.blame --pris blame's own abbreviation of--progress, so it stays allowed, and a test pins that.Mutation checks, each run against the new tests:
/%[-+ ]?G/reverted to/%G/--formatallowed againTests
npx jest __tests__/git-readonly.test.mjs __tests__/git-readonly-server.test.mjs: 52 passed.mention-event-types.contractfails locally only because this fresh worktree has nobackend/node_modules(Cannot find module 'ts-node/register/transpile-only'). CI installs backend deps for it.npx eslint src --ext .js: clean.Review
