feat(wake): one rate-limited debug line per skipped assigned-task wake (TASK-012) - #2768
Core runtime TASK-012. Every gate in dispatchAssignedTaskWakes skipped silently, so explaining a quiet seat meant rebuilding the gates by hand against prod. The rell24 read on 10-26 needed a throwaway-pod script to show the floor gate was the one holding the seat.
self-created row, already woken, no person has acted since
stopped
row stopped after repeated failures (including the run that stops it)
no-completed-turn
seat has no completed turn to time the delay from
delay
last completed turn under five minutes ago
other-work
a queued or running event or run
floor
holdsFloor: the seat's next post would be refused
seat-interval
the thirty-minute seat cap is held
recheck
rows, install or completion changed during reservation
Rate limit. The dispatcher runs every minute. Each (seat, rows, gate) logs at most once per thirty minutes, per replica. A change of gate or of rows logs at once. The in-memory map prunes expired keys once it passes 5,000 entries.
owns() now accepts a null principal. That lets the no-principal line list the rows naming the seat without matching a claimed row whose holder is empty.
No gate's decision changes. The only behaviour added is the log line.
Proof
Run in a container (node:22, Mongo memory server):
New __tests__/service/assignedTaskWakeService.skipLog.test.js, 4 tests:
names the seat, the rows and the gate, and logs once per thirty minutes (delay, then other-work, then other-work again after 30 min);
logs nothing on a wake, then logs seat-interval;
logs no-principal;
logs awaiting-human.
The existing wake suites (assignedTaskWakeService, .webhook, assignedTaskWakeRows, schedulerService.assignedTasks): 62/62 pass in total.
eslint: 0 errors on both files. tsc: clean for the service.
Mutants, each caught by the new file: rate limit removed; other-work line removed; seat-interval line removed; no-principal line removed; awaiting-human line removed.
Not covered by a test: the floor, stopped, no-completed-turn and recheck lines. Each is the same one-line call at its gate.
… wake (TASK-012)
Every gate in dispatchAssignedTaskWakes skipped silently, so a quiet seat
could only be explained by rebuilding the gates by hand against prod (the
rell24 read on 10-26 took a throwaway-pod script to find the floor gate).
Each skip now writes one console.debug line naming the seat, the rows and
the gate: no-principal, awaiting-human, stopped, no-completed-turn, delay,
other-work, floor, seat-interval or recheck. The dispatcher runs every
minute, so each (seat, rows, gate) logs at most once per thirty minutes per
replica; a change of gate or of rows logs at once.
owns() now takes a null principal, so the no-principal line can list the
rows that name the seat without matching a claimed row with an empty holder.

The assigned-task wake dispatcher now logs skip gates, rate-limits repeated messages, and handles rows assigned to seats without principals. Tests cover selected gates, dispatches, and the 30-minute rate limit.

Summary
Skip logging and gate reporting backend/services/assignedTaskWakeService.ts, backend/__tests__/service/assignedTaskWakeService.skipLog.test.js
The dispatcher logs skip reasons, including missing principals, delays, other work, and seat-interval conflicts. A cache suppresses repeated messages for 30 minutes. Tests check selected gate messages and rate limiting.
Checked the exact head in a clean worktree. The diff touches backend/services/assignedTaskWakeService.ts and adds backend/__tests__/service/assignedTaskWakeService.skipLog.test.js.
No gate's decision changed. Every logSkip(...) call sits directly before the continue (or else fall-through) that the original code already had, in each branch: selfCreated, stoppedAt, failures ≥ STOP (after stopRow), no-principal, no-completed-turn, delay, other-work, floor, recheck, and the seat-interval 11000 catch. owns() is called with null only inside the new no-principal logging path. Its other two callers pass a string principal, and the !== null guard gives the same result for a string. Nothing in the logging path writes to the database.
Tests:npx jest assignedTaskWake on Node 22 gives 4 suites passed and 1 skipped; 61 tests passed and 2 skipped. The skipped suite is assignedTaskWakeRows.pg.test.js, which needs a Postgres host. The body's 62/62 does not match this run, so the PG count needs to be checked on the containers.
Mutants:
Rate limit disabled (< INTERVAL_MS → < 0): the new test "once per thirty minutes" fails. Caught.
Floor gate continue removed: no test fails, so the floor gate's skip decision is not pinned by any test. The body discloses this. It is still the gap a later edit could break without a failing test.
Rate limit growth: the map cannot grow without bound over time. Entries older than 30 minutes are removed once the map passes 5000 keys. The cap is soft, though. Above 5000 live keys (all logged within the last 30 minutes) nothing is evicted, and each insert then scans the whole map. Live keys are (seat, rows, gate) combinations, so this is reachable at fleet scale (about 440 bot users times the gate count, before row-set variation). A hard cap or an eviction of the oldest key would close it. Not blocking for a debug-only change.
Non-blocking:
Add a test that pins the floor skip (for example, a floor-held seat is not enqueued), so removing its continue fails.

Report claimed assignments when the principal is missing.
If a claimed row has assignee set to this seat and claimedBy set to its former principal ID, owns(row, install, null) returns false. The missing-principal branch then emits no diagnostic for that row. Report the named assignment without treating it as wakeable; keep the claimant check for wake decisions. As per path instructions, a failed lookup must “fail toward over-delivery,” not toward “a message or event nobody sees.”

In the missing-principal branch, update the named-row diagnostic selection so
assignments for this seat are reported even when owns(row, install, null)
rejects a former principal’s claim. Keep claimant validation in the
wake-decision path so reporting does not make those rows wakeable.

Include pod identity in the skip-log key.
If the same seat has TASK-1 in two pods, both no-principal skips produce the same key. The second pod receives no diagnostic for 30 minutes. Include install.podId in the key and log line so each skipped row remains identifiable.

Update the skip-log key and corresponding log line in the assigned-task wake
flow to include install.podId, so skips for the same seat and task in different
pods remain distinct and identifiable.
Add mutation-sensitive assertions for all four diagnostics.
Existing tests reach stopped, floor, and recheck, but assert only wake and state outcomes. They do not assert the corresponding diagnostics. The inspected tests do not directly exercise no-completed-turn.
Add a no-completed-turn case and assert the diagnostic in each path. Keep the no-wake assertions. Each assertion must fail if its corresponding logSkip call is removed.

Update the assignedTaskWakeService skip-log tests to assert the corresponding
diagnostic for the stopped, floor, and recheck paths, and add coverage for the
no-completed-turn path. Make each assertion verify its specific logSkip
diagnostic so removing that call fails the test, while retaining the existing
no-wake assertions.
