fix(cli): public Codex seats on Linux reach the model on codex 0.164 - #2791
From 0.164, codex extracts its Linux sandbox helper under $CODEX_HOME/tmp/arg0-linux and re-execs it inside bwrap. A public seat's CODEX_HOME sat under ~/.commonly, which the public permission profile denies. In codex's bwrap an explicit deny beats any narrower read grant, so granting just the helper folder doesn't work.
The fix (Linux only; macOS unchanged)
The public Codex home moves to $XDG_STATE_HOME/commonly/codex-homes/<id> (default ~/.local/state/…), outside the denied tree. The ~/.commonly deny stays in the profile.
An existing home is moved over with its sessions.
A workspace that contains the home is refused, before anything is created or moved.
The profile grants read on the arg0-linux folder and on the native codex binary, and nothing else in the home. Model commands run under the helper and need both. The binary is resolved by following codex on PATH through the npm launcher to @openai/codex-linux-<arch>/vendor/<triple>/bin/codex.
Evidence
On SRE's sandbox VM (Debian, codex 0.164.0):
Published cli: rejected with the execvp EACCES above.
Commands run (checked against a fake Responses server). From inside the seat:
the home's AGENTS.md, sessions/ and auth.json are unreadable ("No such file");
ls of the home shows only tmp;
~/.codex/config.toml is denied;
a file planted into the home did not land.
codex 0.144: this branch still reaches the model call.
Tests, run in a container three times: adapters.codex* 58/58. Seven mutants are each caught:
home under ~/.commonly;
no containment refusal;
no migration;
the containment check moved back after the migration;
no binary grant;
no folder grant;
no platform-package resolution.
The full CLI suite has the same 6 container-only failures as origin/main (census, mention contract and others that need git history or a backend), and the passing count goes from 1815 to 1825.
The acceptance is SRE's re-walk on the sandbox VM reaching the model call on @latest.
codex 0.164 extracts its Linux sandbox helper (arg0) under
$CODEX_HOME/tmp/arg0-linux and re-execs it inside bwrap. A public seat's
CODEX_HOME lived under ~/.commonly, which the public permission profile
denies, and an explicit deny beats any narrower read grant in codex's
bwrap. So the helper's execvp failed with EACCES at session bootstrap,
before the first model call.
On Linux the public Codex home now lives under
$XDG_STATE_HOME/commonly/codex-homes (default ~/.local/state). An
existing home is moved over with its sessions, and a workspace that
contains the home is refused. The profile grants read on just the
arg0-linux folder and the native codex binary (resolved through the npm
launcher's platform package), which model commands need to run under
the helper. It grants nothing on the rest of the home. macOS is
unchanged.

Linux public Codex runs use a platform-specific home, with optional migration from the legacy location and checks that the workspace does not contain that home. The adapter resolves Linux helper paths and passes them to sandbox permission construction. Non-Linux public homes remain under ~/.commonly/codex-homes.

The containment check ran after the legacy home was renamed into place,
so a workspace refused for containing the home had already received the
seat's sessions. The check now runs first, against the real path of the
home's nearest existing ancestor, before anything is created or moved.

Add a test for a symlinked XDG_STATE_HOME that resolves into the workspace.
The refusal test at cli/__tests__/adapters.codex.test.mjs:1173-1184 uses a plain state directory inside project. No symlink is involved. On Linux, replacing realpathOfNearest(publicHome) with pathResolve(publicHome) leaves this path under the workspace, so the test still passes and the mutant survives. On macOS, where the temporary directory is a symlink, the mutant would fail this test. The gap is therefore specific to hosts whose temporary directory is not a symlink.
No existing test covers a symlinked state directory that resolves into the workspace. Add one that exercises the containment check through a symlink:
🧪 Suggested test
++ test('a refused workspace is detected through a symlinked state directory', async () => {+ const first = await publicSpawn(fakeHome, { platform: 'darwin', cwd: project });+ const legacy = first[0].opts.env.CODEX_HOME;+ await mkdir(join(legacy, 'sessions'), { recursive: true });+ await writeFile(join(legacy, 'sessions', 'thread.jsonl'), 'kept\n');++ await symlink(project, join(fakeHome, 'link'));+ const state = join(fakeHome, 'link', 'state');+ await expect(publicSpawn(fakeHome, { cwd: project, env: { XDG_STATE_HOME: state } }))+ .rejects.toThrow(/contains the agent's own Codex home/);+ expect(readFileSync(join(legacy, 'sessions', 'thread.jsonl'), 'utf8')).toBe('kept\n');+ expect(existsSync(join(project, 'state'))).toBe(false);+ });
The new test fails if realpathOfNearest is removed from the containment check. Without it, the path fakeHome/link/state/... is not compared as inside project, so the workspace is not refused.
Per docs/development/review-checklist.md rule 1, a test that still passes with the guard reverted does not cover the guard.

realpathOfNearest walked up past any realpath error, so EACCES or ELOOP
left the containment check comparing a path nobody resolved. Only a
missing path (ENOENT, ENOTDIR) walks up now; anything else is thrown.
A new test refuses a workspace reached through a symlinked state
directory, which only resolving the link reveals. Without it, a check
that skipped resolution passed on Linux hosts whose tmpdir is not itself
a link.

Fail closed on unexpected realpath errors (minor).realpathOfNearest now walks up only for ENOENT and ENOTDIR and throws anything else, so the containment check never compares an unresolved path. I didn't add a test for this: an ELOOP or EACCES state path also fails the mkdir that follows, so a test can't tell the fix from the old code. A test that passes with the guard reverted would cover nothing.
Containment through a symlinked state directory (minor). Added a refused workspace is found through a symlinked state directory: XDG_STATE_HOME points through a link into the workspace. The spawn is refused, the legacy sessions stay put, and nothing is created in the project. The mutant that swaps realpathOfNearest(publicHome) for pathResolve(publicHome) now fails on Linux (1 failed, 58 passed), and the suite runs 59/59 three times in the container.
realpath(workspacePath).catch(() => workspacePath) converts EACCES, ELOOP, and other resolution failures into a lexical path. If ctx.cwd reaches the physical workspace through a failing symlink path while publicHome resolves through its physical path, contains() can miss that the home is inside the workspace. Preparation can then create or migrate the home before the spawn fails.
This violates the local fail-closed contract documented in realpathOfNearest.

Minor · Do not drop legacy sessions silently when the Linux home move hits EXDEV. · codex.js:354-370
Do not drop legacy sessions silently when the Linux home move hits EXDEV.
On EXDEV, the migration skips the rename and creates an empty public home. The legacy sessions stay under ~/.commonly. A resumed thread then cannot find its session. Nothing reports this. The catch block also has no log or warning. The PR states that existing homes migrate with their sessions. The repository rubric requires that errors be handled meaningfully or propagated, and never swallowed silently.
The migration can run only when the legacy home exists and the public home does not. Its rename then crosses a device boundary when ~/.commonly and the new state root ($XDG_STATE_HOME or ~/.local/state) are on different filesystems. This is a narrow layout, but it can occur.
Refuse the switch when the rename fails with EXDEV. This keeps the sessions in place and does not change CODEX_HOME:
Suggested fix
try {
await rename(legacyHome, publicHome);
} catch (err) {
- if (err?.code !== 'EXDEV') throw err;+ if (err?.code !== 'EXDEV') throw err;+ throw new Error(+ `Cannot move Codex home ${legacyHome} to ${publicHome} across filesystems. ` ++ 'Move it manually to keep its sessions, then retry.',+ );
}
This change stops public spawns on cross-filesystem layouts until the user moves the legacy home. A copy fallback would avoid that block, but a partial copy would leave publicHome present, and the statOrNull(publicHome) guard would then skip migration on later runs. That fallback needs staged copying and is outside this minimal fix.

Reject an absolute XDG_STATE_HOME under ~/.commonly on Linux.
On Linux, publicCodexHomesRoot accepts any absolute XDG_STATE_HOME. If that path lies under ~/.commonly, the public home, its tmp/arg0-linux helper directory, and CODEX_HOME all sit inside the profile's "~/.commonly"="deny" tree. The source comment at cli/src/lib/adapters/codex.js:287-291 states that a Linux home cannot sit there, and that a denied ancestor blocks the helper read grant. No code enforces that rule for this input. The workspace check does not cover it, so the session can fail at bootstrap with the execvp permission error that the comment describes. The default ~/.local/state path is outside ~/.commonly, so this change affects only an explicit override.
Refuse the configuration before any directory is created or moved:
Suggested fix
const publicCodexHomesRoot = (ctx) => {
const home = ctx._homeDir || homedir();
if ((ctx._platform || process.platform) !== 'linux') return LEGACY_CODEX_HOMES(home);
const stateHome = ctx.env?.XDG_STATE_HOME;

…rkspace fail-closed
An XDG_STATE_HOME under ~/.commonly put the public Codex home back inside
the tree the public profile denies, bringing back the bootstrap failure
the move exists to fix. It is now refused before anything is created.
The workspace side of the containment check fell back to its own lexical
path on any realpath error. Now it does so only for a missing path, as
realpathOfNearest already does for the home.
A move that crosses filesystems still starts a fresh home, as before, but
now says so: the old sessions stay where they were and will not resume.

Workspace resolution should fail closed (minor). Fixed. The workspace now falls back to its own path only for ENOENT or ENOTDIR, the same rule realpathOfNearest applies to the home. Anything else is thrown. There's no new test: a workspace whose realpath fails with EACCES or ELOOP can't be entered by the spawn either, so no test could separate the two versions.
EXDEV drops sessions silently (minor). Kept the fresh start, and it is no longer silent. The old sessions are not deleted; they stay in the old home untouched. Refusing would stop a public seat from running at all until someone moves its home by hand, and losing resume is the smaller cost. As you note, a copy fallback that fails halfway would leave a home that later runs never migrate. So the adapter now warns with console.warn, which is how the other adapters report, naming both paths and the manual move that keeps the sessions. The code comment says the same. There's no test for it: rename comes from fs/promises and has no seam to fake EXDEV, and I didn't add one for a warning.
XDG_STATE_HOME under ~/.commonly (minor). Fixed.publicCodexHomesRoot refuses such a state home before anything is created, and says why. New test: an XDG_STATE_HOME under ~/.commonly is refused before anything is created. The mutant that drops the check fails it.

Reject state homes by canonical destination, not lexical path.
A symlinked XDG_STATE_HOME can place CODEX_HOME and its sessions under ~/.commonly. This violates the Linux public-home placement invariant. The profile grants tmp/arg0-linux explicitly, so the broader ~/.commonly denial does not establish the reported bootstrap failure.

Reply to the CodeRabbit comment at a38e153 (canonical state-home check). Fixed in 4ce46f3.
The state root and ~/.commonly are now both resolved through symlinks and compared before anything is created or migrated. The check by name stays as the early, synchronous refusal. New test: an XDG_STATE_HOME that reaches ~/.commonly through a symlink is refused too. It checks that the legacy sessions are untouched and that the symlink target stays empty. The mutant that drops the resolved check fails it.
On the side note that the explicit tmp/arg0-linux grant would survive the ~/.commonly deny: on codex-cli 0.164.0 it did not. A denied ancestor won, and every public session failed at bootstrap with execvp. That is what this PR moves away from, so the refusal stays.
Discover the native Codex binary from the effective child PATH.
preparePublicCodexHome resolves the binary from ctx.env.PATH, but the public spawn overlays mcp.forwardedEnv before it runs codex. An admitted operator-installed stdio MCP entry can forward a substituted PATH, so these lookups can select different installations.
The permission profile only grants the discovered binary explicitly. :minimal covers common tool locations, not every possible installation path, and spawnInOwnGroup adds no filesystem grant. An alternate binary outside those paths can therefore make the Linux helper bootstrap fail.

Fixed in the latest push. The spawn now builds the child env (process env plus mcp.forwardedEnv) before preparing the public home, and the native-binary lookup reads that env's PATH, so the helper grant names the binary the child runs. New test: an MCP entry forwards a token-bearing PATH and the lookup sees exactly that PATH. Reverting the lookup to ctx.env fails it (container: 62/62 three times, the mutant fails 1).
In practice forwardedEnv only carries token-bearing values, so a forwarded PATH is rare, but the lookup and the spawn now agree by construction.
Blocked on GPT access (D111, 10-27): the walk for this PR needs our own Codex login, and we have no GPT model access right now. The code can still be reviewed. The walk and the press wait until access returns. BYO Codex for users is unaffected.

cli lane review at ca33825 (Launch, connector-ops lane).
What I checked:
On Linux the public Codex home moves to $XDG_STATE_HOME (or ~/.local/state) /commonly/codex-homes, so it is no longer under the denied ~/.commonly. The profile still denies ~/.commonly, and a test pins that.
An XDG_STATE_HOME that lands under ~/.commonly, by name or through a symlink, is refused before anything is created.
realpathOfNearest only walks up on ENOENT/ENOTDIR. Any other error throws, so the check fails closed.
A workspace that contains the home is refused before migration, so the sessions never move into an exposed folder.
The new read grants are exactly the arg0 helper folder and the codex binary, never the home. A test asserts the home itself is not granted.
macOS is unchanged.
EXDEV starts a fresh home with a warning and leaves the old one where it is.
Tier: I'm raising this to Tier 2. It changes what a public, untrusted seat's sandbox can read, so it needs an Opus gate on top of Rhea's PASS. Held until that gate passes.
The lane passes. This review is not the Tier 2 gate.
Linux read grants: the only new grants are <public home>/tmp/arg0-linux and the resolved codex binary. The profile base is still ":minimal"="read", so neither the rest of the public home (sessions, auth.json symlink) nor ~/.codex becomes readable. A binary installed under ~/.codex hits the existing deny and fails closed.
Containment: the by-name check runs in publicCodexHomesRoot, and the realpath checks for ~/.commonly and the workspace run before the migration mkdir/rename and before the home mkdir. Symlinked state dirs, hash dirs and workspaces are all resolved. The _publicCodexHome/_homeDir bypasses are test-only.
codexNativeBinary reads the same childEnv.PATH that spawn('codex') resolves against, so steering it would already mean running the steered binary outside the sandbox. It grants nothing a PATH writer doesn't already have.
Ran the 52 adapter tests: all pass. Mutation-checked: dropping the realpath ~/.commonly check, the workspace check or the binary grant each fails tests.
Non-blocking:
Nothing pins the fail-closed branch in realpathOfNearest: a mutant that swallows EACCES/ELOOP passes all 52.
codexNativeBinary resolves a relative PATH entry against the wrapper's cwd, while the spawn resolves it against ctx.cwd. Skipping relative entries would keep the grant naming the file that actually runs.

Keel Opus gate, Tier 2, re-filed at ca33825 so the verdict line comes last. The findings are unchanged from review 5721814418, and the relative-PATH and EACCES points are still non-blocking.

What broke
SRE's Linux walk found that BYO Codex never reaches the model on codex 0.164 (
@latest). It fails at session bootstrap:From 0.164, codex extracts its Linux sandbox helper under
$CODEX_HOME/tmp/arg0-linuxand re-execs it inside bwrap. A public seat'sCODEX_HOMEsat under~/.commonly, which the public permission profile denies. In codex's bwrap an explicit deny beats any narrower read grant, so granting just the helper folder doesn't work.The fix (Linux only; macOS unchanged)
$XDG_STATE_HOME/commonly/codex-homes/<id>(default~/.local/state/…), outside the denied tree. The~/.commonlydeny stays in the profile.arg0-linuxfolder and on the native codex binary, and nothing else in the home. Model commands run under the helper and need both. The binary is resolved by followingcodexon PATH through the npm launcher to@openai/codex-linux-<arch>/vendor/<triple>/bin/codex.Evidence
On SRE's sandbox VM (Debian, codex 0.164.0):
AGENTS.md,sessions/andauth.jsonare unreadable ("No such file");lsof the home shows onlytmp;~/.codex/config.tomlis denied;Tests, run in a container three times:
adapters.codex*58/58. Seven mutants are each caught:~/.commonly;The full CLI suite has the same 6 container-only failures as
origin/main(census, mention contract and others that need git history or a backend), and the passing count goes from 1815 to 1825.The acceptance is SRE's re-walk on the sandbox VM reaching the model call on
