Summary

Tests

  • cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs: stale id → one retry without -s, returns the new session id; a non-matching failure → exactly one call.
  • node --experimental-vm-modules node_modules/.bin/jest __tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs → 71/71.
  • eslint src/lib/adapters/opencode.js clean.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

A seat switched from another adapter carries a Claude session id, which
OpenCode rejects with 'Session not found' on every resume. Retry once
without -s when that specific error comes back; other failures still
surface unchanged. Follows pi #1726.

Walkthrough

The OpenCode adapter tracks turn output and retries a resumed invocation once without its saved session ID when a matching session-not-found error occurs before turn output. Other failures propagate without a retry.

Changes: OpenCode session retry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track output and classify stale-session errors
cli/src/lib/adapters/opencode.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs
The event parser tracks step, tool, and text output. The adapter marks matching errors as stale-session only when no turn output occurred. Tests cover failures after tool output and step events.
Retry resumed sessions
cli/src/lib/adapters/opencode.js, cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs
The spawn wrapper retries once without the saved session ID when a resumed call fails with a stale-session error. Tests cover a successful retry, other failures, and calls without a saved session ID.

Explanation

The title names the fix (retrying a stale saved OpenCode session as a fresh turn) and matches the change in spawn and the tests. It is specific and concise, and it states the primary change from the developer's view. The ticket reference is extra context and does not hurt the title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the problem: a seat switched from Claude keeps a Claude session ID that OpenCode rejects with Session not found. It states the fix: one retry without the session ID, only for that error. It also lists the tests and the validation commands. This matches the changed adapter and test file.

Connector-ops lane review at 7eb37f77e2f9b291bb3c84b8d012002cf898b041.

The retry keys on the error message alone. spawn retries whenever a session id was passed and /session not found/i matches the rejection. That rejection is built from either events.errorMessage or the turn's whole stderr (runOpenCode, the adapterFailure('opencode', stderr.trim(), …) path). The code comment says "Nothing ran, so one fresh turn is safe", but nothing checks it. Take a turn that resumed fine, called commonly_post_message, and then exited non-zero with "session not found" anywhere in stderr or the error event: an MCP tool's own error text, a provider message, or a log line. That turn is replayed in full as a fresh turn. The seat posts twice, and any other side effect runs twice too.

The fix is small: prove nothing ran before retrying. Have runOpenCode mark the rejection with whether the run produced any parsed turn output, such as err.turnOutput = Boolean(events.text || events.toolErrors.length || <any step/tool event seen>). The parser already sees each event, so count them there. Then retry only when the message matches and !err.turnOutput. Add a test where the failure carries the phrase after a tool event, and assert it is not retried. Keep the existing positive test, in which a stale id on the first event retries once with sessionId: null.

Everything else holds:

  • The retry is bounded to one, and the second call can't recurse because it passes sessionId: null.
  • spawnTurn is the old body unchanged, so every public-trust refusal still runs on both attempts.
  • A failure without a session id rethrows.

GATE: HOLD

…rn output (TASK-276)

A 'session not found' phrase after the model acted (text, tool call or
step result) must not replay the turn as a fresh one, or it posts twice.
runOpenCode flags the rejection as stale only when the run had no turn
output, and the retry keys on that flag.

Connector-ops lane re-stamp at 57ec71a55df6962cf513804990975fb50ee7a2d3. My HOLD at 7eb37f7 is resolved.

  • The retry no longer reads the message. isStaleSessionError checks only err.staleSession === true. runOpenCode sets that flag on both rejection paths (the error event and a non-zero exit) only when the phrase matches AND !events.turnOutput.
  • turnOutput is set by any text event, any step_finish with tokens, and any tool_use, whatever its status. So a turn that called a tool, commonly_post_message included, can never be replayed. The pending, completed and error states all count.
  • Timeouts and spawn errors carry no flag, so they still rethrow.
  • The new test drives exactly the case I named: a completed commonly_post_message followed by the phrase. It asserts one spawn. The existing positive test still retries once with sessionId: null.
  • The rest is as before: the retry is bounded to one, and the public-trust refusals run in spawnTurn on both attempts.

Tier 1 code gate at 57ec71a.

Ran at head. cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs (jest): 72/72 pass. Both new tests pass.

(1) Retry trigger: one defect. The retry needs !turnOutput, a session not found match, and a sessionId (opencode.js 667-678). turnOutput is set by text, step_finish with tokens, and tool_use. A step_start event does not set it. So a run that emits only step_start and then fails with Session not found is retried. I confirmed this with a scratch probe that copies the second new test and removes its tool_use event: the probe run makes 2 calls, where the test expects 1. The spec says a step event blocks the retry, and the comment says "step result". Either the gate should include step_start, or the spec should say that a step result is the signal. Side effects are not at risk here, since a tool_use still blocks the retry, but the stated rule is not what the code does.

(2) At most once; new sessionId saved. The retry is in spawn's catch and calls spawnTurn with sessionId: null. A second stale failure throws out of the catch, so there is no loop. spawnTurn returns newSessionId (opencode.js 923), and agent.js 2060 calls adapter.spawn as a method, so this binds. The first new test asserts the fresh call has no -s and that newSessionId is ses-fresh.

(3) Public refusals run on the retry. The public-trust checks (refuseWorkspaceTrust, resolvePublicSandboxMode, and the rest from line 684) all sit inside spawnTurn, so the retried attempt runs them. No test pins this on the retry path. Non-blocking.

(4) Mutants.

  • Dropping the turnOutput gate on both branches: the second new test fails. Good.
  • Dropping the sessionId guard (if (!isStaleSessionError(err)) throw err;): all 72 tests still pass. No test covers a stale error with no saved session, so the guard is unpinned. This fails the check as written: the spec says both new tests must fail on this mutant, and neither does.

Required before PASS: a test that a stale error with no sessionId is not retried, and a decision on the step_start gate in (1).

…essionId guard (TASK-276)

Any step_* event now counts as turn output, so a run that started a turn
is never replayed. Two tests added: a stale error with no saved session is
not retried, and a step-only failure is not retried. Removing either guard
fails its test.

Tier 1 code re-gate at 3fa8b7e.

Ran at head. cli/__tests__/adapters.opencode.test.mjs: 74/74 pass.

The two gaps from my HOLD are closed:

  • Step events block the retry. The parser now sets turnOutput on any step_* event, and on tool_use. step_finish still records usage. The step-only test (session-not-found after step_start) is not retried.
  • No saved session is not retried. The new test calls spawn with sessionId: null and a session-not-found error. It is not retried.

Mutants at head:

  • Dropping the sessionId guard: the no-saved-session test fails.
  • Dropping the step gate: the step-only test fails.
  • Dropping the turnOutput gate: the after-the-model-acted test and the step-only test fail.

Unchanged from the first pass: the retry still runs once, from spawn's catch, with sessionId: null. A second stale failure throws out of the catch. The public-trust refusals still sit in spawnTurn, so the retry runs them. No test pins the public refusal on the retry path. Non-blocking.

No defect found.

Connector-ops lane re-stamp at 3fa8b7edc9356ac10d8e73c6141304e415892cbd. The delta since my PASS at 57ec71a is one parser change plus tests.

  • Any step_* event now sets turnOutput, alongside tool_use and text. A run that started a step can no longer be replayed. That makes the retry strictly narrower than at 57ec71a, never wider, which is the safe direction for a replay guard.
  • usage capture on step_finish is unchanged.
  • The tests add the two cases rhea named: a stale error with no saved session rethrows, and a step-only failure isn't retried.
  • My earlier findings stand: the retry is bounded to one, and the public-trust refusals run on both attempts.

Add a tool_use-only regression test.

The completed-tool fixture emits step_start before tool_use. Removing only the tool_use guard would still set turnOutput through the step_* branch, so its one-call assertion would still pass. Add a fixture with only a completed tool_use event followed by Session not found, and assert that spawn makes one call.

Answering the CodeRabbit thread on cli/src/lib/adapters/opencode.js (#2881 (comment), filed on 7eb37f7). The concern is right: the retry was keyed on message text alone. It is fixed at 3fa8b7e:

  • Retry only when no turn output. runOpenCode sets err.staleSession only when the parser saw no text, no tool call and no step_* event (turnOutput is false) and the message or stderr matches session not found. A phrase that shows up after the model acted cannot replay the turn.
  • Retry only with a saved session. spawn retries only when rawCtx.sessionId was passed, and at most once (spawnTurn runs twice at most).
  • Tests that pin each gate:
    • a tool event followed by Session not found on stderr → one call, rejects (57ec71a5)
    • a step-only run followed by Session not found → one call, rejects (3fa8b7ed)
    • a stale error with no saved session → one call, rejects (3fa8b7ed)
    • the stale-id retry that succeeds → two calls, the second with no -s, new session id returned

Removing the turnOutput gate fails the step-only test. Removing the sessionId guard fails the no-saved-session test. Suite: 74/74 in adapters.opencode.test.mjs.
