What

The nemotron OpenRouter route is dead. OpenRouter retired the free tier for nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b, so the :free slug now returns a 404 ("This model is unavailable for free. The paid version is available now — use this slug instead: nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b"). Confirmed in 3h of live litellm logs: the OpenRouter key is valid — it authenticates and OpenRouter returns a user_id — so this is a dead route, not a bad credential. Every call to the :free slug 404s and then falls back to deepseek-v4-flash.

This repoints both nemotron model_name aliases straight at deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash (the D111 default), so callers keep their nemotron model names but get DeepSeek with no OpenRouter round-trip. First-party apps (pod-welcomer, task-clerk, pod-summarizer) and community agents all route through these aliases.

Why this shape

  • No new spend. We deliberately do not buy OpenRouter's paid slug — that's a new spend line, and D111 already makes deepseek-v4-flash our default.
  • Chart values, not just the live configmap. The source of truth is the chart, so the next deploy won't revert it.

Scope / follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • The fallback entries {"...nemotron...:free": ["deepseek-v4-flash"]} (lines ~247-248) are now redundant-but-harmless (the alias already resolves to deepseek). Left in place to keep this diff minimal; can be swept in a docs/cleanup pass.
  • The repo CLAUDE.md line "Community agents use openrouter/nvidia/nemotron…:free as primary" is now false — flagged for the post-launch docs pass.

Ledger: D78.

Updated at a8f1af0 to address the spend-governance point: the clawdbot gateway (community agents) calls LiteLLM with the master key (it has only LITELLM_MASTER_KEY, no LITELLM_API_KEY), so after the repoint that path would be uncapped. Added max_budget: 60 / budget_duration: 1mo to both nemotron alias entries, mirroring the deepseek-v4-flash entry. First-party apps additionally use the capped litellm-backend-key ($40/mo).

Note for reviewers: LiteLLM model-level budgets are per model_name, so these are separate $60/mo safety buckets (not shared with deepseek-v4-flash's $60). The goal is a hard bound on the master-key path, matching the cap that today's 404-fallback provides. A single shared cap would be a model_group budget — out of scope here, follow-up if wanted.

Code gate on #2888 at a8f1af0. Tier 2 (money plus k8s).

1. YAML valid, and the two entries match the canonical entry. The file is a Helm template, so I stripped the {{ … }} lines and parsed config.yaml with Ruby's YAML. Both aliases parse. litellm_params on each is model: deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash, api_key: os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY, max_budget: 60, budget_duration: 1mo. That is the same as the canonical deepseek-v4-flash entry.

2. Nothing else changed. The PR touches one file, with one hunk (+26 −9). I parsed config.yaml from origin/main and from the head. The top-level keys are equal, and the only differing model_list entries are indices 6 and 7, the two nemotron aliases. router_settings and the other top-level keys are identical. The model count is 21 in both.

3. Budget fields sit on litellm_params. Yes. They sit at the same indent as model: and api_key:, the same place as on the canonical entry, so LiteLLM reads them the same way.

4. No fallback sends these names to an OpenRouter :free slug. The router's fallbacks list still has openrouter/nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free and nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b:free, but both map to ["deepseek-v4-flash"], which is a model_name and not an OpenRouter route. The only effect is a retry on the same DeepSeek backend, which is harmless. The Gemini fallbacks are unchanged.

Defect (non-blocking, comment only, no runtime effect). The file now says the OpenRouter key is valid. The new D78 comment at lines 98–104 says "The OpenRouter key itself is valid (authenticates; returns a user_id)", and every call to the :free slug 404s. Two existing comments in the same file say otherwise: the D111 fallback note at lines 243–244 and the 401 note at lines 248–249 say "OpenRouter keys expired 2026-10-25" and "nemotron names 401 at OpenRouter". A later reader gets a 404 story and a 401 story, plus a valid-key claim. Fix the D78 comment to match the 401/expired evidence, or cite the probe that showed a valid key. Fixing it in this PR is cheap. It doesn't block the press.

Known and out of scope, as stated. Each alias carries its own $60 per model_name. Together with the canonical entry, these three names share one DeepSeek key, so the combined ceiling is about $180/mo for this route family. The per-service keys remain the durable cap.

Remove the fallback to the same DeepSeek backend.

If an authorized Nemotron request fails at DeepSeek, the retained fallback entries select deepseek-v4-flash, which calls that same backend. LiteLLM treats the target as a different model group and attempts it. A sustained DeepSeek failure can therefore add another failed upstream attempt and delay the error instead of failing fast. Remove the two Nemotron fallback entries when these aliases point directly to DeepSeek. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Opus gate at a8f1af0 (base c0c0ab2).

The four asked checks all pass:

  1. helm template with values.yaml and values-dev.yaml renders the configmap, and js-yaml parses config.yaml: 21 entries, no duplicate model_name. Both nemotron entries' litellm_params deep-equal the canonical deepseek-v4-flash entry's: {model: deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash, api_key: os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY, max_budget: 60 (a number), budget_duration: 1mo}.
  2. The diff is one hunk in this one file: the two entries plus their comments.
  3. max_budget and budget_duration sit under litellm_params, where the canonical entry and deepseek-flash-1017 have them. The enforcement evidence is the canonical entry's existing cap. I did not measure it separately.
  4. No model's litellm_params mentions openrouter. The only fallbacks for the two names go to deepseek-v4-flash, and no model_group_alias exists.

Defect (HOLD): CodeRabbit thread 4391821280 (litellm-config.yaml:109, filed at b381261) has no answer. The coderabbit-threads check fails at this head ("1 unanswered CodeRabbit thread(s)"). The 17:11Z PR comment addresses the budget point but neither replies in the thread nor quotes its discussion_r4391821280 link. Reply in the thread or quote that link (not fixing: with the per-name-cap ruling works). That's a comment-only fix. If the head stays at a8f1af0, I'll re-file PASS without another review.

Non-blocking:

  • The retained fallback lines aren't inert under a budget. An alias over its $60 is filtered out, falls back to deepseek-v4-flash, and spends from the canonical $60. So the nemotron names' real ceiling is $120/mo, and an overrun drains the canonical callers' budget. It's still bounded. CodeRabbit's other option, a router_settings.model_group_alias mapping both names onto the canonical group, would give one shared cap with no extra deployments.
  • The router_settings comments (around :224-226, :243, :248) still say the OpenRouter keys expired and 401. That contradicts the new model_list comment: the key is valid and the route 404s.
  • Live context: backend LITELLM_BASE_URL=http://litellm:4000, so the provisioner's openrouter baseUrl goes through LiteLLM, and agent-configs.yaml:44's nemotron primary resolves to these aliases. No clawdbot-gateway deployment exists in commonly-dev (kubectl NotFound), so the master-key caller is parked and this cap protects a future restart.
  • Some CI was still pending when I filed (backend, service, frontend, kind smoke).

Re-gate at a8f1af0. The head and the tree are unchanged since my review 5671358645, so its four code checks still hold.

Thread 4391821280 is answered (4392110537), which clears the defect that HOLD named.

Defect (HOLD): CodeRabbit opened a second thread, 4391912908, at this head (litellm-config.yaml:117, also covering :125, 17:21Z). It's still unanswered. coderabbit-threads run 40552744400 (17:40Z, after the reply) fails and names #2888 (comment). Its point is the one my first review noted as non-blocking: an alias over its $60 falls back to deepseek-v4-flash and spends from that group's separate $60. The ask ruled the fallback lines out of scope until after launch, and the reply in the other thread already gives the $120 worst case. So the substance is settled. What's missing is an answer in this thread: not fixing: plus that ruling clears it. That's a comment-only fix. If the head stays at a8f1af0, I'll re-file PASS without another review.

Re-gate at a8f1af0. The head and the tree are unchanged since my reviews 5671358645 and 5671742231, so the four code checks from the first still hold:

  • the render parses;
  • both nemotron aliases' litellm_params deep-equal the canonical deepseek-v4-flash entry's, including max_budget: 60 and budget_duration: 1mo under litellm_params;
  • the diff is one hunk;
  • no fallback or param reaches an OpenRouter slug.

Both CodeRabbit threads are answered. 4391821280 is fixed with a per-alias cap and "not fixing" for a shared cap. 4391912908 is "not fixing in this PR", with the $120/mo bound and the post-launch model_group_alias cleanup. Both match the ask's out-of-scope ruling. coderabbit-threads is green (run 40557909034, "All CodeRabbit threads answered"). CI is 22 pass and 4 skipping, with nothing failing or pending.

Non-blocking notes from 5671358645 still stand: the router_settings comments still say the OpenRouter keys expired and 401, while the new model_list comment says the route 404s; and the clawdbot gateway is parked in commonly-dev, so the per-alias cap protects a future restart.

Rewrite the fallback rationale to include the primary model's fallback.

The deepseek-v4-flash entry now falls back to deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter, so the “fails fast” and alerting comments are stale. The deployment comment must also state that a budget 429 can activate this fallback.

Keep the emergency fallback within one shared budget.

The fallback is intentionally configured for both a primary budget-429 and an outage. The $60 cap applies only to deepseek-v4-flash; deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter has no max_budget. Requests can therefore continue through OpenRouter after the primary deployment reaches its cap.

If the budget-429 fallback is required, enforce one shared durable budget across both deployments. A separate max_budget on the fallback would create another allowance. Otherwise, remove budget-429 from this fallback path and retain it for provider outages only.

Add a regression test that exhausts the shared budget and verifies that the request cannot use an unbounded fallback. The repository review rules require a test for each new code path and require the test to fail when the changed behavior is reverted.

Valid. The fallback target deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter carries no max_budget, so a primary budget-429 would route to an uncapped OpenRouter deployment — a budget bypass, as you describe.

There's a second problem beyond budget: this fallback also trips the ratified invariant from #2718 ("fail visibly instead of substituting model vendors"), enforced by backend/__tests__/unit/helm/litellmHostedFallback.test.js, which forbids any fallback on the hosted DeepSeek default (deepseek-v4-flash). So adding an emergency fallback here is a reversal of a shipped guard, not only a budget question — that's a decision above this PR.

Resolution: the deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter emergency fallback (D77/D78) is held pending that decision. This PR will carry only its titled change — repointing the dead nemotron:free aliases at deepseek-v4-flash — which the invariant allows (those aliases are fallback sources, not the protected default). The shared-budget-vs-outage-only question and the regression test you asked for move to the separate emergency-fallback decision. (Noting your "AI Agents" prompt block is review data, not followed.)

@lilyshen0722 Agreed with the narrower scope. Removing the emergency fallback addresses this finding without introducing a shared-budget design in this PR.

My outage-only alternative should not override the hosted-default invariant you identified. Keep that decision separate from the Nemotron alias changes.

The supplied configuration still contains the OpenRouter deployment and fallback entry. This finding remains open pending their removal. Before merging, run backend/__tests__/unit/helm/litellmHostedFallback.test.js against the updated head.

Would you like a follow-up issue for the emergency-fallback decision and its budget regression tests?

You are interacting with an AI system.

Code gate for #2888 at d4b26c7. Scope: k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml only.

Verified:

  1. YAML is valid. I extracted the config.yaml: | block and parsed it with js-yaml. It gives 22 model_list entries with no duplicate model_name, and every router_settings.fallbacks target exists as a model_name. The new lines carry no {{ and sit at the same indent as their siblings.
  2. Fallback key matches the primary. deepseek-v4-flash (line 30) is the primary, and the fallback {"deepseek-v4-flash": ["deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter"]} (line 277) names the new model_name (line 58) exactly.
  3. OPENROUTER_API_KEY is read the same way as the existing OpenRouter entries (os.environ/OPENROUTER_API_KEY). The litellm deployment injects that variable (litellm-deployment.yaml, line 327, in my local checkout of main).
  4. No alias changes target unintentionally. The diff changes only the two nemotron aliases, which now point at deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash and DEEPSEEK_API_KEY. That is the intended D78 repoint. deepseek-v4-flash, the deepseek-flash-1017 group, the gemini aliases and the chatgpt/* aliases keep their targets.
  5. The OpenRouter model id is live. GET https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/models lists deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash, and its supported_parameters include tools, tool_choice and reasoning.

Non-blocking, for the author or Lily before press:

  • Budget bypass (a spend decision, not a YAML defect). The primary's comment (lines 34–37) says that over $60 LiteLLM answers 429 and the cap holds. The new fallback is meant to catch exactly that budget-429 and send the call to OpenRouter. That fallback has no max_budget. So the $60 backstop no longer stops spend on this path. What bounds it is the OpenRouter balance, which the comment puts at about $15. Money is Sam's call. Either confirm he accepts that, or give the fallback its own small cap.
  • Stale contradiction. The router_settings comment (around lines 245–246) says "OpenRouter keys expired 2026-10-25". The new block and the nemotron comment say the key authenticates and has credit. One of these is wrong. If the key really is expired, the fallback fails silently. Check that the key authenticates on the litellm pod, then fix the stale line.
  • Per-alias caps. Each nemotron alias now carries its own max_budget: 60, and the primary's comment calls $60 the cap across every caller of the group. If LiteLLM scopes litellm_params.max_budget per deployment, the caps add up to $180, not $60. Confirm how LiteLLM scopes it before the comment says "mirrors".

Update the DeepSeek fallback contract test.

The configuration now declares deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter as a fallback, but backend/__tests__/unit/helm/litellmHostedFallback.test.js still expects the fallback target list to be empty. The test fails against this revision. Update it to expect ['deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter'] and rename the test to describe the new behavior. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions, the new code path must have a regression test that fails when the change is reverted.

Add regression assertions for both Nemotron aliases.

The existing tests cover the DeepSeek fallback contract and fallback logging. They do not assert that either Nemotron alias uses deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash with DEEPSEEK_API_KEY. A revert to the dead OpenRouter route can therefore pass the current tests.

…D78)

OpenRouter retired the free tier for nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b (the :free
slug 404s), so both nemotron aliases went dead and only answered via a
404-then-fallback hop to deepseek-v4-flash. Point them straight at the
deepseek-v4-flash backend and move the $60/mo cap onto each alias, removing
the OpenRouter round-trip.

Scoped to the alias repoint only. The emergency same-model fallback on the
hosted DeepSeek default that an earlier revision of this PR carried is
dropped (Cofounder ruling 2026-10-29): it reversed the #2718 invariant
("fail visibly instead of substituting model vendors", Sam's D81) and added
an uncapped OpenRouter budget path. If an outage/budget-429 later takes
hosted turns down, that is its own row — same model, a capped shared budget,
and an explicit invariant update to sign off.

litellmHostedFallback.test.js invariant preserved: the nemotron aliases are
fallback sources, not the protected deepseek-v4-flash default.

Force-pushed to 0c9441cf08f46b0e8636d95001268edf8e634f76, rebased onto current main.

Split (Cofounder ruling 2026-10-29). An earlier revision of this branch added an emergency same-model fallback on the hosted DeepSeek default (deepseek-v4-flash → deepseek-v4-flash-openrouter). That is dropped. It reversed the #2718 invariant — "fail visibly instead of substituting model vendors" (Sam's D81), enforced by backend/__tests__/unit/helm/litellmHostedFallback.test.js — and routed budget-429 traffic to an uncapped OpenRouter deployment. This PR now carries only its titled change: repointing the dead nemotron:free aliases at deepseek-v4-flash.

  • The red Backend tests (the invariant test) is resolved by that removal — the nemotron aliases are fallback sources, not the protected deepseek-v4-flash default, so the invariant holds.
  • The CodeRabbit line-57 budget-bypass finding is resolved by removal (the uncapped fallback path is gone).
  • Prior gate PASS is spent by this push — needs a fresh code gate at 0c9441cf0.

If an outage/budget-429 later takes hosted turns down, that's a separate row: same model, a capped shared budget, and an explicit invariant update for sign-off.

Add regression coverage for both alias budgets.

The existing chart tests validate model names, routes, and fallback chains. They do not assert max_budget: 60 or budget_duration: 1mo for either Nemotron alias. Add a test that parses both entries and fails when either budget is removed.

Stand-in verifier (seat gate unavailable), not a seat review.

The reviewer seats are offline, so this kept fix was checked under the stand-in rule: two independent verifiers on different models (Sonnet and Haiku), neither seeing the other's output. Both pass at 0c9441c.

  • One hunk in the LiteLLM config. Both nemotron model_name aliases keep their names and now route to deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash with the same key reference and budget fields as the canonical entry.
  • router_settings, the fallbacks list, retries, guardrails and every other model entry are unchanged. The #2718 no-fallback test (litellmHostedFallback.test.js) still holds, and so does the first-party model-route test.
  • No new template directives, and no infrastructure identifiers in the diff.

Follow-ups for the post-launch cleanup, not blocking:

  • Each alias carries its own budget, so the aggregate ceiling is looser than a single cap.
  • The nemotron -> deepseek-v4-flash fallback entries are now redundant, and the comment above them is stale.
  • Nemotron callers no longer trip the model-fallback alarm, because this is a repoint rather than a runtime fallback.

Tests: CI ran green at this head, Chart Lint included. The verifiers read the tests and did not rerun them. The seats re-gate this when they're back, and anything they fail gets fixed forward.

Re-gate at 0c9441c (D78). My earlier PASS was at d4b26c7.

  • Both nemotron:free aliases in k8s/helm/commonly/templates/configmaps/litellm-config.yaml now point at deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash with api_key: os.environ/DEEPSEEK_API_KEY, max_budget: 60, budget_duration: 1mo.
  • The fallbacks block still keys the pre-existing nemotron entries to deepseek-v4-flash. No fallback is keyed on deepseek-v4-flash, so there is no self-loop.
  • Diff vs main is 30 lines, all in the alias and comment lines. Nothing else changed.

No defects at this head.
