Docs only. Design note for D145, covering two lanes.

Lane 1, connector and source results. Fixed React cards on a server-written payload, recommended over OpenUI rendering a broker-composed payload. Credentials and raw vendor responses stay server-side. The model never emits UI here. Build estimate: Linear slice 3–5 days, split into a backend PR and a frontend PR.

Lane 2, agent-authored visuals. An agent may emit an OpenUI spec only through the validated payload path, and only when it renders with no scripts, no network and nothing credentialed in reach. The shipped catalogue already meets this: the validator refuses Query, Mutation and Run, and allows only https Link and OpenUrl.

Vendor MCP question. The public OpenUI and Thesys docs show no MCP server or agent tool interface. The note lists five exact questions for Sam to put to Thesys.

Two findings for the CTO:

  • Agent-authored OpenUI cards already ship on main (feat: validate agent-authored OpenUI card payloads #2675). The launch research said there was no OpenUI code. That was wrong, and the model-emits-UI path conflicts with lane 1's invariant, so the CTO needs to rule on it.
  • The agent writer refuses any envelope kind other than ui, so a server-written kind cannot be forged by an agent. The note asks for a test that keeps it that way.

Vera gates. No code changes.

Recommends fixed React cards on a server-written tool-card payload, with the
model never emitting UI. Records that agent-authored OpenUI cards already ship
on main (#2675), which conflicts with the invariant and needs a CTO ruling.

Document the complete agent-card envelope.

{kind:'ui', lang:'openui@1', source} is not the complete accepted shape. The writer also requires messageType: "card", nonempty content, v: 1, and the catalogue revision tuple. Mark this object as shorthand, or list the required fields. Otherwise, implementers can create payloads that the writer rejects. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Route tool-card payloads through V2MessageRow in PR 2.

The PR 2 plan adds V2ToolCard and a presence test, but it does not name the V2MessageRow branch that renders the card. V2MessageRow dispatches on payload.kind with explicit branches for approval-card, byo-handoff, ui, and gig-card. A tool-card payload matches none of them. A presence test on the component can pass while no message ever renders it. PR 2 should add the dispatch step and a test that renders a message with payload.kind === "tool-card". A test that still passes with the dispatch reverted does not cover this wiring.

2. **Attach rule.** Server only. Input is a call id. The grant and pod checks reuse the room-grant semantics in [hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md](hosted-mcp-connection-scope.md). Visibility is the whole pod, so the attach rule must confirm the pod is allowed to see the connector's data.
3. **Snapshot label.** Each card shows the fetch time, because it is a snapshot.
4. **Renderer.** `V2ToolCard` switches on `card` type with design-system tokens. No iframe, no HTML from any source.
5. **Retention.** Cards copy connector fields into the pod message store. That store has a 30-day expiry in PG. Note this in the card's privacy line.

Qualify the 30-day retention claim.

PostgreSQL retention skips PG_RETENTION_EXEMPT_POD_IDS and protected pod IDs. A connector card in one of those pods can remain longer than 30 days. Do not promise universal 30-day deletion unless connector payloads bypass these exemptions or the privacy text states the effective exception. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

State the navigation boundary accurately.

Link and Action(OpenUrl) navigate the browser when the user clicks. The browser then requests the target URL, so these elements do issue network traffic. “No network” and “They do not fetch” misstate the boundary. The lane forbids programmatic fetches and tool calls. It allows user-initiated navigation to literal https URLs without credentials.

Proposed wording
-- **No network.** The only outbound element is `Link` or `Action(OpenUrl)`, both restricted to literal https URLs with no credentials. These navigate when the user clicks. They do not fetch.
+- **No programmatic network or tool calls.** The only outbound elements are `Link` and `Action(OpenUrl)`, both restricted to literal `https` URLs with no credentials. They navigate only after a user click, and that navigation sends a browser request to the target URL. The renderer has no tool binding that can issue a request.

Gate at c0af6fbb6 (docs only, one file). Tier 2 Opus gate for D145.

HOLD findings

  1. The CodeRabbit thread is unanswered, and it is correct. coderabbit-threads is FAILURE on thread 4393612817 (30-day retention). PG_RETENTION_EXEMPT_POD_IDS is set on the live commonly-dev backend (checked the deployment env), and Message.ts:485-505 skips those pods. So line 118's "That store has a 30-day expiry in PG. Note this in the card's privacy line" would put a false promise in a privacy line for exempt pods. Qualify it, then answer the thread.
  2. Line 88 describes the decision card wrongly. "A decision card currently shows its options as plain text" is false. V2DecisionCard.tsx:122-143 renders each option as a button, with a recommended marker (:142) and a description (:143). The proposed "Badge for the recommendation" already exists. Sam asked for this section directly ("better visualization for some text or decision"), so restate the gain from the real card. For example, a Table helps only when options are compared on several attributes, which a button list cannot show. If there is no real gain, say so.
  3. The vendor section misses the one place the docs mention MCP. queries-mutations.mdx:94 and :106-107 say the Renderer's toolProvider accepts "a function map or an MCP client" (<Renderer toolProvider={mcpClient} …/>). That answers Sam's question directly: OpenUI consumes MCP, from the browser, and does not provide an MCP server. It also sharpens invariant 3, because wiring an MCP client there puts a credentialed tool path in the browser. Lines 94-100 should say this. Question 2 for Thesys is partly answered by our own code: cardRuntime.tsx:39 renders with no toolProvider, and the validator refuses Query/Mutation/Run. Ask only what is still open, i.e. whether omitting toolProvider is a guaranteed no-op.

Non-blocking

  • Line 4: D77 is the "Cofounder ratifies decisions inside Sam's directions" row. It does not name the CTO as the owner of the connector-lane ruling. Cite the row that does, or route both conditions per D77.

Verified at this head

  • uiCardValidation.ts: 32 KB cap (:15), 2,048-node budget (:16), and a catalogue hash check (:12-13, :157). The catalogue has 15 components. :239 refuses Query, Mutation and Run. Link (:57) and OpenUrl (:233-236) accept only credential-free https URLs.
  • Line 37's refusal claim holds at every agent writer: agentsRuntime.ts:1602, :2292 and nativeRuntimeService.ts:824 (commonly_post_message) all call validateAgentCardPayload, which refuses any kind other than ui. A PCRE census of req.body payload readers under backend routes, controllers and services found no other writer (control: :1601 matched). Socket handlers carry no message payload.
  • The renderer (V2UICard → cardRuntime.tsx) uses @openuidev/react-lang Renderer with no toolProvider. #2675 is b14ac5150. ADR-020 D3 is the approval card. messageCardUpdated is emitted at approvalActionService.ts:597. Both linked plan docs exist. The vendor quotes are verbatim at queries-mutations.mdx:8 and :94. README and comparison have no MCP mention. The Security risk row is at comparison.mdx:33.
  • The recommendation of (b) and the invariant analysis are sound. The findings above are about accuracy, not about the choice.

Rename the file without the ledger id (for example docs/plans/connector-result-cards-2026-10.md), and drop the ledger id and the ruling attribution from the text. Keep the design itself.

The public repo carries product only. This PR is on a press hold until that is fixed.

CTO ruling on the two lanes: accept both, as the note recommends. The two paths don't actually conflict, because each one is a different envelope kind.

  • Connector and source results use lane 1. The server writes the payload and v2 renders it with fixed React cards. The model never writes UI for data a connector returned. So when a card says "from Linear", the server is the one saying it.
  • Agent-authored visuals stay on lane 2. That's the shipped kind: "ui" / openui@1 path, under the validator's current limits: no Query, Mutation or Run, and https-only Link and OpenUrl.
  • What keeps them apart is the agent write path. It refuses every kind except ui, so an agent can't forge a lane-1 card. The note asks for a test that pins this. That test is required, and it lands before any lane-1 code.

Order of work: the guard test, then TASK-606 (catalogue read tool), then the Linear lane-1 slice as one backend PR and one frontend PR. TASK-607 (server-stamped Source) is unparked. The five vendor questions go to Sam separately and don't block this.

The note can go to its gate as written. Add one line under "Decision" recording this ruling, then it's ready for the press.
