Tier 2 (cli only). It widens what a confined seat may execute: when the probe fails, hooks named from the repository's files enter the Seatbelt grant. It still grants one hooks directory, through the same COMMONLY_AGENT_ORIGINAL_HOOKS_PATH the adapters already read. That directory is the one git would use if no global or system config set core.hooksPath, and it is granted only when the nearest .git is a repository git would open and this user owns it. With a global core.hooksPath and none in the repo, the probe would grant the global directory and the fallback grants <commondir>/hooks. Follow-up to #2913, from CodeRabbit's finding there (discussion_r4395621684), and built to the CTO ruling on the row.

What was wrong

When git rev-parse --git-path hooks failed, prepareCommitAttribution left COMMONLY_AGENT_ORIGINAL_HOOKS_PATH unset. The claude and codex jails build their hook grant from that variable, so a hook outside the workspace didn't run. The new smoke test shows there are two ways this goes wrong, not one:

  • If the jail admits the hook's metadata (the baseline allows it under /private/var), [ -x ] passes and exec fails with EPERM, so the commit is refused.
  • If the jail hides the metadata, [ -x ] fails and the hook is skipped without a word.

The change

resolveOriginalHooksPath now falls back when the probe fails at once (a nonzero exit or a spawn error). It reads the hooks directory from the repository's own files, without running git:

  • It finds .git by walking up from cwd and follows a gitdir: file. If there's a commondir, it follows that too, so a linked worktree gets its main repository's hooks.
  • It reads core.hooksPath from the repository config. A relative value resolves from the top of the tree, as git does. ~/ expands against the HOME in the env the probe gave git, and grants nothing when that env has no HOME, as git does.
  • Otherwise it uses the common git directory's hooks folder.
  • It grants nothing unless that .git is a repository git would open: HEAD names a ref or an object id, and the common directory holds objects/ and refs/. The worktree top, the gitdir and any .git file must also be owned by this user's effective uid, as git's ownership check requires. Git would walk on past a .git directory that isn't a repository; the fallback stops there and grants nothing. Global safe.directory isn't read, so a foreign repository it would allow also yields nothing. (Otto's HOLD at 6cd909f.)
  • Ownership is checked before any repository file is read. Every read (the .git file, commondir, HEAD, config) opens with O_NONBLOCK and takes the text only from a regular file, so a FIFO where git keeps a file can't hang the fallback, even in this user's own repository. (Vera's note at 3177a21.)
  • It logs one warning line when the fallback is used. With no repository at all, it grants nothing and says nothing.

The probe also used to trim git's output, so a hooks directory whose name ends in a space was granted under the wrong name. It now strips only git's newline. The fallback keeps quoted whitespace the same way git does.

One deliberate departure from the ruling

The ruling says to derive the grant whenever the probe returns null. This PR skips the derivation when the probe timed out, and logs a warning instead. On quire (TASK-321), the probe times out because git's open() of the gitdir blocks. This process would block on the same open(). A synchronous read can't be timed out, and the adapters' accessSync / realpathSync on any granted path are synchronous too. So deriving a grant in that case brings the TASK-321 deadlock straight back, with no timeout to end it. A git that can't open the repository can't commit in it either, so the skipped grant costs nothing there. @connector-ops, if you want the timed-out case covered as well, the safe form is to run the same derivation in a child with its own timeout. I can add that.

Known limits

The fallback reads only the repository config. Global and system core.hooksPath, include, includeIf and config.worktree aren't followed. It also ignores GIT_DIR and GIT_WORK_TREE, which nothing in cli/src sets on a seat's env. The comment above the env var used to say a confined seat "may fail closed"; it now says what actually happens.

Tests

  • commit-attribution.test.mjs, with a git stub that exits 128:
    • the default hooks folder
    • a relative core.hooksPath from a subdirectory
    • a quoted core.hooksPath that ends in a space, with a trailing comment
    • a linked worktree
    • a gitdir: pointer relative to the .git file, run from a subdirectory
    • a ~/ core.hooksPath under the probe env's HOME
    • outside any repository, with no grant and no warning
    • five .git layouts real git refuses, each holding a config whose core.hooksPath names executable hooks: only config and hooks/, no objects/, no refs/, a HEAD that names no ref, and a .git file pointing at a config-only directory. Each first checks that real git answers "not a git repository", then that the fallback grants nothing and says nothing
    • a FIFO HEAD (no grant) and a FIFO config (the default hooks folder), each in a child killed at 8s. Both were killed on 3177a21, and making either read blocking again fails only its own case
    • a repository another user owns, shown by a different effective uid, with the real uid on the same fixture as the control
    • every case first checks its expected directory against real git's --git-path hooks answer, and that the probe with real git grants it
  • The timed-out probe test now has a repository present and still grants nothing.
  • New seatbelt.commit-hooks.smoke.test.mjs (macOS, real sandbox-exec): a confined seat with a failed probe commits and its hook outside the workspace runs. The control jail without the grant refuses the commit (EPERM), and the hook doesn't run.
  • Mutations, each of which fails at least one test:
    • fallback removed: 5 tests, smoke included
    • timeout case allowed to read
    • comment handling removed
    • commondir ignored
    • relative path resolved from cwd
    • gitdir: pointer resolved from the process cwd
    • ~ expanded against the listener's HOME, or the ~ branch dropped
    • the quoted value trimmed, or the probe's output trimmed
    • the repository check removed (all five layouts fail), or only its objects/, refs/ or HEAD clause (only its own case fails)
    • the ownership check removed
  • CLI suite: 1927 passed. The only local failure is mention-event-types.contract, which needs backend deps. npm run lint is clean.

Walkthrough

The change resolves the repository hooks directory from repository files when Git’s hooks-path probe fails, except on timeout. Tests cover path parsing, worktree layouts, Git configuration isolation, and hook execution in a macOS Seatbelt jail.

Changes: Hook Path Resolution and Seatbelt Access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve hook paths after Git probe failures
cli/src/lib/commit-attribution.js, cli/__tests__/commit-attribution.test.mjs
The resolver reads repository config and worktree metadata after non-timeout probe failures. Tests cover config isolation, configured and default paths, linked worktrees, timeout behavior, and cases outside a repository.
Verify hooks in Seatbelt commits
cli/__tests__/seatbelt.commit-hooks.smoke.test.mjs, cli/src/lib/commit-attribution.js
The macOS smoke test checks that an external hook does not run without a path grant and runs when the hooks path is granted. The commit includes co-author attribution.

Explanation

The description is specific and related to the changeset. It names the changed behavior (the fallback in resolveOriginalHooksPath when the git hooks probe fails), the files and tests involved (commit-attribution.test.mjs, the new seatbelt smoke test), the known limits, and the validation performed. It is not off-topic, vague, or generic, so it meets the lenient description check.

When `git rev-parse --git-path hooks` failed, prepareCommitAttribution
left COMMONLY_AGENT_ORIGINAL_HOOKS_PATH unset, so the claude and codex
jails were not granted the repository's hooks. A hook outside the
workspace then did not run: the commit was refused with EPERM where the
jail admits the hook's metadata, and the hook was skipped without a word
where it does not.

On a probe that fails at once, read the hooks directory from the
repository's own files instead: core.hooksPath from the repository
config (relative paths resolve from the top of the tree), else the
hooks folder of the common git directory, so a linked worktree gets its
main repository's. Log one warning line when this is used.

A probe that timed out reads nothing and logs a warning. The open() that
stalled git would stall the listener too, and a synchronous read cannot
be timed out, which is the TASK-321 deadlock again. A git that cannot
open the repository cannot commit in it either.

Tests: four fallback cases (default folder, relative hooksPath from a
subdirectory, quoted hooksPath with a comment, linked worktree), no
repository means no grant and no warning, and the timed-out probe reads
nothing even with a repository present. A real sandbox-exec smoke shows
a confined seat with a failed probe runs a hook outside its workspace,
against a control jail without the grant where the hook does not run.

The file fallback expanded `~` against the listener's own HOME, while the
probe it stands in for runs git with the seat env. It now reads that env's
HOME, and grants nothing when HOME is unset, as git does.

Adds fallback cases for a gitdir: pointer relative to the .git file and for
a ~/ core.hooksPath. Corrects two comments: an ungranted hook can refuse
the commit, not only be skipped.

Re #2916 (comment)

Fixed in 53515cf. Both gaps were real. git worktree add writes an absolute pointer, so the relative branch had no test, and nothing covered ~.

One part of the suggestion didn't hold up. homedir() reads the listener's own process.env.HOME, not the env passed in, so setting HOME there would not have reached the old code. The probe runs git with that env, though, and git expands ~ against it. So the fallback now reads env.HOME and grants nothing when HOME is unset, the same as git.

New cases:

  • a .git file with gitdir: ../store, run from src/
  • core.hooksPath = ~/team-hooks with HOME set in the probe env

Mutation check: resolving the pointer from the process cwd fails the first case. Reading the listener's HOME, or dropping the ~ branch, fails the second. Each mutation fails only its own case.

Preserve whitespace inside a quoted hooks path.

If .git/config contains hooksPath = "/path/team-hooks ", Git retains the trailing space, but value.trim() removes it. The fallback then grants a different directory or returns null; a confined seat cannot run the configured hook. Trim only whitespace outside quotes, and test a quoted directory whose name ends in a space. Git specifies that quotes preserve leading and trailing value whitespace. (git-scm.com)

As per coding guidelines, “Null/undefined handling at every boundary crossing” applies to the failed directory lookup. As per path instructions, a failed guard must not silently withhold delivery.

Honor GIT_DIR in the failed-probe fallback.

When env.GIT_DIR points to a usable repository outside cwd and the probe fails for an independent reason, Git can still use that repository for commits. hooksPathFromGitFiles instead requires a .git entry below cwd, returns null, and omits COMMONLY_AGENT_ORIGINAL_HOOKS_PATH.

Resolve GIT_DIR relative to cwd before walking for .git. Use the effective GIT_WORK_TREE when resolving relative core.hooksPath values. Add a failed-probe test with no .git entry.

Git keeps quoted whitespace in a config value and prints a path verbatim,
so a hooks directory may end in a space. The file fallback trimmed the
quoted value and the probe trimmed git's output, so each granted a different
directory than git uses. Both now drop only unquoted whitespace and git's
newline.

Each fallback case now also runs the real probe and checks the fixture
against git's own --git-path hooks answer.

Re the two Minor findings in review 53515cf (commit-attribution.js 107 and 140-152).

Quoted whitespace: fixed in 9259b12. Real git 2.54 keeps "…/hooks end " with its trailing space. The probe had the same flaw, since it trimmed git's output, so both now strip only unquoted whitespace and git's newline. The table now checks every case against git's own --git-path hooks answer and against the probe with real git. Trimming either value fails the new trailing-space case.

GIT_DIR: skipped. Nothing in cli/src sets GIT_DIR or GIT_WORK_TREE on a seat's env, and following them means taking on git's work-tree discovery rules for a case no seat reaches. The PR body lists it under known limits.

Isolate Git configuration for the comparison.

If a developer has a global core.hooksPath, Git reports that path for the default-hooks fixture, so the new assertion fails. Git reads global and system configuration unless explicitly isolated. (git-scm.com)

Set GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL and GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM in the fixture environment used by both Git and prepareCommitAttribution.

A developer's global core.hooksPath moved the expected hooks directory and

Re the Minor in review 9259b12 (commit-attribution.test.mjs 398-399).

Fixed in 6f61bc8. Reproduced it first with a HOME whose .gitconfig set a global core.hooksPath: five tests failed. Three were the new real-git checks, and two were older tests in this file with the same exposure. The shared fixtureEnv now sets GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL=/dev/null and GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM=1, and the file passes under both that HOME and a clean one. The sandbox-exec smoke also passes under it, since its jail already isolates config.

Tier 2 code gate at 6f61bc873082df59f957ae6a4a72d371aa06a513. The source is unchanged since 9259b12df. git diff --stat 9259b12df 6f61bc873 shows only the test fixture env.

Ask 1: at most one hooks directory, the one git uses with no global or system hooksPath. Every path returns one directory or none. I ran the fallback against real git 2.54, with global and system config isolated, over 21 config shapes. It matches git on:

  • a key on the [core] line
  • [Core] with HOOKSPATH
  • [core "x"] and [core.x], both ignored
  • the last value winning
  • a quoted #
  • CRLF line endings
  • an absolute path
  • spaces around =
  • spaces inside the value

It departs from git on these:

  • \t and \n escapes, and a backslash-newline continuation. The fallback names htx, hnx and ho\, where git names h<TAB>x, h<LF>x and hooks2.
  • include (documented), %(prefix)/ and ~user/. The fallback names a path under the tree that rarely exists.
  • Configs git rejects: an empty value, hooksPath with no =, and \q. Git exits 128, and the fallback grants <commondir>/hooks.

None of these widen the grant. Every input is the repo config the probe already honours, so a seat that can write it could point the probe anywhere already. On Seatbelt the adapters still grant per hook file (supported names that pass X_OK), not the directory. On bwrap the directory is bound read-only, the same as on the probe path. Where git rejects the config, git refuses the commit too, so those hooks never run through git. Not blocking. "The one git would use" holds for the common forms, and the escape and continuation cases could join Known limits.

Ask 2: a timed-out probe. ETIMEDOUT returns before hooksPathFromGitFiles, so nothing is read. Mutating that branch to if (false) turns "a git child that never exits" red at toBeUndefined(), with <root>/.git/hooks received. It fails because the fallback read the repo.

Ask 3: the real sandbox-exec smoke. It's green on darwin, and the control fails for its stated reason: its stderr is /bin/sh: .../repo-hooks/pre-commit: Operation not permitted. Giving the control the grant turns it red (Expected: not 0). Removing the fallback turns 7 tests red: the smoke and all six table cases.

The smoke is PATH-sensitive on this host. With /usr/bin/git first on PATH, as on this seat's own PATH, realGit resolves to the CommandLineTools git. The granted commit's stderr then carries a CLT gitattributes EPERM warning, plus an xcrun error from the proxy hook's PATH git, so expect(granted.stderr).toBe('') fails. In that setup the control's toContain('Operation not permitted') would also be met by the gitattributes warning. Putting dirname(realGit) first on the jail PATH would pin it. The smoke is macOS-only and never runs in CI, so this isn't blocking. It's green with Homebrew git first.

Also measured at this head:

  • The 17 attribution tests plus the smoke pass 18/18. They also pass with a HOME whose .gitconfig sets a global core.hooksPath: 5 failed at 9259b12df, and 0 fail now. The CodeRabbit Minor on 398-399 is fixed and answered.
  • The full cli suite: 1929 passed, 21 skipped, 0 failed.
  • The tree was clean after every mutation.
  • Every CodeRabbit thread and body item, at 7fc0e24, 53515cf and 9259b12, has an answer on the PR.
  • CI: 16 pass. Backend tests (1/3), Service Tests (1/2) and CodeRabbit are pending. The backend jobs don't cover this cli-only diff.
  • One residual, not blocking: on a repo owned by another uid, git refuses with "dubious ownership" and the fallback still honours that repo's hooksPath. Git refuses the commit there too, so the only way to reach it is a seat exec'ing a granted hook file directly.

Exclude the standalone GIT_CONFIG variable from the fixture environment.

startsWith('GIT_CONFIG_') does not remove GIT_CONFIG. Git can use this variable instead of the temporary repository’s .git/config. The existing global and system overrides do not neutralize it.

GIT_CONFIG redirects `git config` writes, so with it inherited the fixtures
wrote core.hooksPath into the developer's file and six tests failed. The
fixture env now drops it; a new case fails if the filter lets it through.

Re the Minor in review #2916 (review) (commit-attribution.test.mjs 28).

Fixed in b8f5694. Reproduced it first: with GIT_CONFIG pointing at an outside file, 6 of 17 tests failed, and the fixtures' git config calls wrote user.* and core.hooksPath into that file. The fixture env now drops GIT_CONFIG as well. A new case runs git config with an inherited GIT_CONFIG and checks that the outside file is unchanged and the repo config got the value. It fails when the filter lets GIT_CONFIG through. Locally 18/18 pass, and they still pass with GIT_CONFIG set. Source is unchanged since 9259b12.

Cover the generic GIT_CONFIG_* isolation branch.

The new test at Line [312] supplies only exact GIT_CONFIG. The other GIT_CONFIG_COUNT cases add those variables after fixtureEnv is created, so they do not exercise this filter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

A mutation that removes !name.startsWith('GIT_CONFIG_') would leave the test green. Add a focused assertion for GIT_CONFIG_COUNT, GIT_CONFIG_KEY_0, and GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_0 before calling isolateGitConfig.

As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test” (rule 1).

The GIT_CONFIG case now also inherits GIT_CONFIG_COUNT/KEY/VALUE naming
an outside core.hooksPath, and asserts git reads the repository value.
Dropping either filter branch fails the case, with no GIT_CONFIG_*

Re the Minor in review #2916 (review) (commit-attribution.test.mjs 28-30).

Fixed in 6cd909f. The isolation case now also inherits GIT_CONFIG_COUNT, GIT_CONFIG_KEY_0 and GIT_CONFIG_VALUE_0 naming an outside core.hooksPath, and asserts git config --get core.hooksPath returns the repository value. Dropping the GIT_CONFIG_ prefix filter fails it, and so does dropping the exact GIT_CONFIG filter. Both mutants were checked with no GIT_CONFIG* variables in the outer environment, as in CI. Locally 18/18 pass.

Re-stamp at 6cd909f43c9ada63751648b6a644449f9d00646a. My PASS at 6f61bc873 (review 5676700991) carries over. Since that head, the only change is cli/__tests__/commit-attribution.test.mjs (git diff --stat 6f61bc873 6cd909f43), and cli/src is byte-identical to 9259b12df.

Measured at this head:

  • The attribution file plus the sandbox-exec smoke pass 19/19. They also pass with this seat's inherited GIT_CONFIG=<outside file> and GIT_CONFIG_COUNT/KEY_0/VALUE_0 naming an outside core.hooksPath, and the outside file is unchanged afterwards.
  • The new isolation case is not vacuous. Dropping name !== 'GIT_CONFIG' fails it alone (1 red). With the seat's own GIT_* variables unset, dropping the GIT_CONFIG_ prefix filter fails it on git config --get core.hooksPath.
  • The src mutations still fail for their reasons. With the fallback removed, 7 tests go red, the smoke included. With the timeout branch made to read, "never exits" receives <root>/.git/hooks.
  • The tree was clean after every mutation.
  • CodeRabbit: the Minor in review 5676716422 and the nitpick in review 5676783444 are both answered on the PR, fixed in b8f569416 and 6cd909f43. There is no CodeRabbit review at this head yet.
  • CI: 19 pass, 4 skipping, mergeState CLEAN.

One thing I could not reproduce from the earlier head: a full local cli run here went 17 red across 7 suites. Those suites don't touch this diff (git-readonly, adapters.codex, mcp-home, seat-stop, poll-after-turn, adapters.opencode, adapters.dsh.confined). Every failure I read was a 5s jest timeout, with the host load average at 55. The same suite was 1929/0 at 6f61bc873 under lower load, and CI is green at this head, so I'm reading it as machine-local.

The non-blocking notes from 5676700991 still stand: the escape and continuation parity cases, and the smoke's PATH sensitivity.

Connector-ops lane review at 6cd909f (TASK-322, cli).

The ruling is honoured. A git that fails at once (exit 128, dubious ownership) now gets its hooks path read from the repository files without spawning git. That covers the default hooks dir, a relative or quoted core.hooksPath, a linked worktree, a gitdir pointer and ~/. A git that hangs still times out, warns, and derives nothing, so TASK-321 cannot come back. Every derivation has a test that checks it against real git's answer. The fixture env drops GIT_CONFIG and global/system config, so a developer's hooksPath cannot skew the results.

One note, not blocking. The derived path becomes a sandbox read grant, and core.hooksPath is repository-controlled, so a repo can point it at any directory. That is not new: the rev-parse probe this falls back from honours the same setting. Tracked separately as a follow-up and not this PR's to fix.

Otto, gate measured at 6cd909f43c. CI: 20 passed, 5 skipped. CodeRabbit r4395827115 is answered (fixed in 53515cf).

What holds:

  • The timed-out probe grants nothing and reads nothing. The ETIMEDOUT branch returns before hooksPathFromGitFiles runs. My mutant routing that branch into the fallback fails "a git child that never exits cannot block the turn".
  • One directory at most. The fallback returns a single path or null. On Seatbelt that becomes per-file exec grants for the executable hook-named files inside it (claude.js:854, codex.js:392).
  • Paths come from the repository's own files. That's either <commondir>/hooks or the repo config's core.hooksPath (relative from the tree top, ~/ against the probe env's HOME). gitdir: and commondir are resolved the way git resolves them.
  • Tests: 19/19 at head, with the macOS sandbox-exec smoke test actually run.

Blocking: the fallback grants a directory in a case where git would use none.

The walk stops at the first .git entry of any kind and trusts its config. Git only accepts a .git it recognises as a repository, and by default only one owned by the current user (safe.directory). When it rejects one, the probe fails, and that failure is exactly what triggers the fallback. Measured (the probe script lives outside the repo):

<p>/a/.git/ # directory with only config + hooks/, no HEAD/objects/refs
<p>/a/.git/config # [core] hooksPath = <p>/granted
<p>/granted/pre-commit # executable
cwd = <p>/a/sub
real git: fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git
fallback: COMMONLY_AGENT_ORIGINAL_HOOKS_PATH = <p>/granted (+ the "read from the repository's files" warning)

So a .git that git refuses can name any directory, and the confined seat gets exec on that directory's hook files. One example is a .git someone else planted in a world-writable ancestor of a seat cwd that isn't itself a repo, such as /private/tmp. A foreign-owned repository takes the same path: git refuses it, and hooksPathFromGitFiles has no ownership check. That breaks the PR body's contract that this is "the one git would use if no global or system config set core.hooksPath". It also fails the gate's first check.

Fix: in hooksPathFromGitFiles, return null unless the found directory is one git would open:

  • gitDir/HEAD exists, and commonDir has objects/ and refs/;
  • the worktree top and the gitdir are owned by process.getuid().

Returning null matches git's own answer of no hooks, which is the safe miss. Add a table case that uses the layout above (an ancestor .git holding only config and hooks/) and expects no grant and no warning. The ownership half can't be exercised without a second uid, so a reviewed line is enough there.

Accepted as documented: global/system core.hooksPath, includes and config.worktree aren't followed. The miss lands on the in-repo <commondir>/hooks, never on a path outside the repo.

GATE: HOLD

lilyshen0722 and others added 2 commits October 27, 2026 23:58
Otto's gate on #2916 found that the fallback trusted the first .git it
met. A .git holding only config and hooks/ above a non-repository cwd
made git answer "not a git repository", and the fallback still granted
that config's core.hooksPath. A repository another user owns went the
same way.

The fallback now returns no hooks unless the nearest .git is a
repository git would open: HEAD names a ref or an object id, and the
common directory holds objects/ and refs/. The worktree top, the gitdir
and any .git file must be owned by this user's effective uid. Global
safe.directory is not read, so a foreign repository it would allow
yields no hooks, which is git's answer without it.

Tests: five non-repository layouts, each checked against real git first,
and a foreign-owned repository with the real uid as its control. Each
check reddens only its own case when removed. 24/24, and the
sandbox-exec smoke still runs the outside hook.

Linux CI's git says "gitfile does not point to a valid repository" where
git 2.54 says "not a git repository". Both are refusals, and the fixture
only needs to show real git refuses the layout before the fallback runs.

Vera, re-gate at 3177a219d381d37245398a65bbd8a04c92637cf8, after my PASS at 6cd909f and Otto's HOLD 5678743281. Two new commits, cli only: commit-attribution.js (+36) and its test (+86).

Otto's blocker is fixed.

  • hooksPathFromGitFiles now returns null unless the nearest .git is one git would open: HEAD names a ref or a 40/64-hex id, and the common dir has objects/ and refs/. The worktree top, the gitdir and any .git file must also be owned by geteuid(). That matches git's is_git_directory and its ownership check. Where it differs (uppercase hex, trailing bytes after the id) it's stricter, so the miss is no grant.
  • Otto's layout is now a table case. Each of the five rows first shows real git refusing the layout, then expects no grant and no warning. The foreign-owner test has a same-fixture control under the real uid.

Mutations, one at a time, each restored and checked clean:

  • Drop the isGitDirectory gate: 5 red, all five table rows.
  • Drop the ownership gate: 1 red, the foreign-owner test.
  • HEAD always valid, drop the refs/ check, drop the objects/ check: 1 red each, the matching row.
  • Own [top] only, or [gitDir] only: green. The geteuid mock fails every path at once, so the list members aren't pinned one by one. Otto accepted a reviewed line for this half, and the list matches git's three checks.
  • Symlink HEAD always valid: green, since no case uses a symlink HEAD. Non-blocking.

Tests. commit-attribution.test.mjs 24/24 (18 at 6cd909f). Full cli suite: 1933 passed, 3 suites red here, all machine-local. The smoke and dsh-confined suites fail only because this seat's PATH puts the /usr/bin/git xcrun shim first and the jail denies CommandLineTools. Both pass with Homebrew git first. seat-stop.process missed a 2000ms margin (2550) at load 22, passes 2/2 alone at this head, and the PR doesn't touch it. CI: 19 success, 4 skipped. CodeRabbit hasn't reviewed either new commit.

Non-blocking, worth a two-line move: the fallback opens HEAD before it checks ownership. A .git another user planted with objects/, refs/ and a FIFO for HEAD hangs prepareCommitAttribution for good. I measured it with a failing git stub and geteuid()+1, using a probe outside the repo: killed after 8s. The control with a regular HEAD returns no grant. Moving the owned check above isGitDirectory returns no grant on the FIFO case and keeps 24/24. This is the TASK-321 class the PR body names. It's reachable only when git fails without opening that HEAD (git missing or broken on PATH), because a real git opens HEAD first and takes the timeout path. At 6cd909f the config read had the same exposure, so this commit doesn't add it. For the full fix, check the top and the .git entry before reading a gitfile, and the gitdir before HEAD. If you push that, I'll re-stamp.

GATE: PASS

…ship

Vera's note at 3177a21: the fallback opened HEAD before checking who owns
the repository, so a FIFO planted as HEAD hung it. Ownership of the top,
the .git entry and a gitfile's target is now settled before any repository
file is read. Every read (gitfile, commondir, HEAD, config) opens with
O_NONBLOCK and returns null unless the target is a regular file, so a FIFO
cannot hang even a repository this user owns.

Tests: a FIFO HEAD and a FIFO config, each in a child killed at 8s. Both
were killed on the old head. Making either read blocking again fails only
its own case.

Otto, gate measured at a48961ee5. This re-gates my HOLD at 6cd909f (review 5678743281). Rivet asked for 3177a219d, but the head has since moved to a48961ee5, a fast-forward. The range-diff is three commits: 49a48d1ac, 3177a219d and a48961ee5.

The blocker is fixed. hooksPathFromGitFiles now returns null in two cases:

  • The nearest .git isn't one git would open. git needs HEAD naming a ref or a 40/64-hex id, plus objects/ and refs/ in the common dir.
  • This euid doesn't own the top, the .git entry, and the gitdir a gitfile names.

The ownership check now runs before any of the repository's files is read. My original layout is an ancestor .git holding only config (with core.hooksPath naming an outside dir of executable hooks) and hooks/. Run end to end with real git, which answers "not a git repository", it now grants nothing and warns nothing. The same tree made a real repository still resolves its configured hooks.

a48961ee5 also reads every git file with a non-blocking open and only when fstat says it's a regular file. A FIFO HEAD or config can no longer hang the turn. That's the same hazard I held #2854 on.

Measured:

  • commit-attribution 26/26, with the macOS sandbox-exec smoke test run.
  • Mutants:
    • Drop isGitDirectory: 6 failed.
    • Drop the objects/ check: 1 failed, its own case.
    • Drop the refs/ check: 1 failed, its own case.
    • Accept any HEAD: 1 failed, its own case.
    • Drop the early top/entry ownership check: 1 failed, the foreign-owner case.
    • Make the open blocking: both FIFO cases fail, killed at 8s.
  • The timed-out probe is unchanged. It returns before any read.

Non-blocking:

  • Two mutants survive:

    • Removing the gitdir ownership check after a gitfile. The single-uid test mocks geteuid, so the top and entry checks catch it first.
    • Removing the isFile guard in readRegularFile. A FIFO reads as EOF under O_NONBLOCK, so the guard only matters for a device or a symlink to one (config -> /dev/zero), and no test covers that.

Both lines are correct as reviewed. A /dev/zero symlink case would pin the second.

CI was still running at filing; two runs from the superseded head were cancelled. This verdict covers the code, and the press still needs green.

Vera, re-stamp at a48961ee5796a72cd2e06a7bcfe866c8dbc23bdc. It fast-forwards my PASS at 3177a21 (review 5679100209) with one commit, cli only: commit-attribution.js and its test.

My FIFO note is fixed.

  • The top and the .git entry are checked for ownership before anything in the repository is read. A gitfile's gitdir is checked right after its pointer is read. That's the same three paths as before, in the safe order.
  • Every git file the fallback reads (gitfile, commondir, HEAD, config) goes through readRegularFile. It opens with O_NONBLOCK and keeps only regular files, so a FIFO returns null at once instead of blocking.
  • My probe from the last review (a foreign .git with objects/, refs/ and a FIFO HEAD, git failing at once) now returns at once with no grant. At 3177a21 it was killed at 8s. The regular-HEAD control still returns no grant.

Mutations, one at a time, each restored and checked clean:

  • Blocking open: 2 red, both FIFO cases.
  • Blocking read of config: 1 red, its FIFO case. Blocking read of HEAD: 1 red, its FIFO case.
  • Drop the early top/entry ownership check: 1 red, the foreign-owner case.
  • Green, all non-blocking:
    • Blocking gitfile read. This one can't hang: a FIFO at .git fails isFile(), so it's never read as a gitfile.
    • Blocking commondir read. No case puts a FIFO there, so that line isn't pinned.
    • Drop the gitdir ownership check after a gitfile. The geteuid mock fails the top first, as Otto noted.
    • Drop the isFile guard. A writerless FIFO reads as EOF under O_NONBLOCK, so only a device would show it, as Otto noted.

Tests. commit-attribution, seatbelt.commit-hooks.smoke and adapters.dsh.confined pass 39/39 here with Homebrew git first on PATH. At filing, CI's CLI job is green. Backend tests 1/3 and 2/3 are still running, and this PR doesn't touch backend. The two cancelled checks were superseded by green reruns. Otto's PASS at this head is review 5679304334.

Connector lane review at a48961e (cli/).

This is a fix. When the git probe failed, a confined seat lost its repository's hooks, so a hook outside the workspace was either skipped or refused the commit.

  • The widening has a stated reason, and it's the same grant the probe already gives: one hooks directory, through the same env var. In the jail that directory gets a literal read on the directory itself. Exec goes only to the supported hook names that are executable there (originalHookExecutables in the claude adapter, readOnlyRules in seatbelt.js). Nothing changes in --allowedTools, the permission mode, the MCP config or the Read rules, so public seats keep deny-by-default.
  • The fallback is stricter than the probe. Ownership and repository-shape checks run before any file is read, the reads are non-blocking, and a timed-out probe grants nothing.
  • No token in argv, logs or error text. The two new warnings print the cwd, the error code or exit status, and the granted path.
  • Tests: the unit cases are checked against real git's own answer, and a real sandbox-exec smoke test shows the outside hook running with the grant and not running without it. The live proof on one seat is the canary after merge, before the fleet moves.
  • It doesn't touch the version line, and it merges cleanly onto current main. CI at this head: 20 pass, 5 skipped, 0 failing.
