fix(connectors): register Airtable's client by DCR (TASK-318) - #2927
Starting Airtable from /v2/connectors lands on Airtable's "invalid client_id or mismatched redirect_uri" page, before consent. Our client-metadata document matches what we send, but Airtable never fetches it: Cloudflare shows 0 of 19 fetches of /client-metadata came from Airtable (connector-ops, 98167). So Airtable is refusing the URL client_id outright.
Airtable lists none in token_endpoint_auth_methods_supported, so the registry registers a public client. No secret is stored, and PKCE S256 is still sent.
/client-metadata for Airtable now answers 404 client_metadata_not_used, as it does for any non-CIMD entry.
Airtable's live metadata
Fetched 2026-10-28T04:00:12Z from https://airtable.com/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server/oauth2/v1 (the RFC 8414 URL discoverAuthorizationServer builds for this issuer; the root well-known returns the same bytes):
The whole document is committed as backend/__tests__/fixtures/hostedMcp/airtable-authorization-server-2026-10-28.json.
Tests
hostedMcpEntry.test.js: pins client: 'dcr', the capture's issuer against the entry's, registration_endpoint = https://airtable.com/oauth2/v1/register, none on offer, S256, and the entry's four scopes inside scopes_supported.
hostedMcpDcrRegistry.test.js (service): the real registry, fed the capture, POSTs once to https://airtable.com/oauth2/v1/register with a public-client body and stores a row with no secret.
Mutation: setting the entry back to cimd fails both new tests (2 failed, 70 passed).
Six hosted-MCP suites (entry, registry, intake, connect, callback, visibility): 197/197.
Not measured
No registration was POSTed to Airtable from here, since that creates a real client at the vendor. Whether Airtable accepts our registration body (it includes scope) is first seen on the walk. A refusal shows as client_registration_refused on start, not as a half-made row. A 2xx answer that fails the strict confirm (no token_endpoint_auth_method: "none" echo, or extra redirect_uris) shows as client_registration_unsupported instead, and it leaves a client at Airtable with no row behind it. Each retry registers another, so the walk stops after the first such failure and reads the answer (Otto's gate note).
No Airtable row can be holding a CIMD client_id: no connect has ever got past Airtable's error page, and the entry has been hidden since #2898.
Acceptance
Unchanged: a fresh connect reaches Airtable's consent screen. SRE walks it after the deploy.
Airtable refused our client-metadata URL as a client_id ("invalid client_id
or mismatched redirect_uri") without fetching the document: Cloudflare saw
no fetch from Airtable. So the entry now registers a client at the
registration_endpoint Airtable's metadata advertises, through the existing
hostedMcpDcrRegistry. Airtable lists `none`, so the client is public and no
secret is stored.
A capture of Airtable's authorization-server metadata (2026-10-28) pins the
endpoint, and a service test runs the registry against it.

Airtable’s hosted MCP entry now uses dynamic client registration instead of client ID metadata. The change adds captured authorization-server metadata and tests for DCR discovery, registration fields, and stored registration state.
Changes: Airtable DCR
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Configure and validate Airtable DCR backend/integrations/hostedMcp/airtable.ts, backend/__tests__/fixtures/hostedMcp/*, backend/__tests__/unit/services/hostedMcpEntry.test.js
The Airtable entry switches to DCR and retains S256 PKCE. The captured metadata fixture supports tests for the registration endpoint, public-client support, and advertised scopes.
The registration test checks the endpoint and request fields, then verifies the returned client ID and stored registration without a client-secret reference.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2898: Hides Airtable after a production connection flow failed with an invalid-client or redirect-URI error. This PR changes Airtable registration from CIMD to DCR as part of the same connection-flow correction.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f15fd
This change moves Airtable's hosted MCP connection to dynamic client registration. If Airtable rejects the requested refresh grant at registration, or later at refresh, new connections could fail or expire early. Whether Airtable accepts the registration request has not been tested. Confirm that a fresh connect reaches Airtable's consent screen and that a token refresh succeeds before relying on this in production.

Verify Airtable’s refresh-grant support before release.
The captured metadata does not advertise refresh_token, but ensureDcrClient requests it for every DCR client. Airtable can therefore reject registration even though the repository records a measured refresh-token response from Airtable.
Verify the registration request and a subsequent refresh against Airtable. If registration rejects refresh_token, adjust the registration and expired-token recovery flow.

Re #2927 (comment) (refresh_token in the registration body):
Not fixing in this PR. Reasons:
Airtable's token endpoint does issue refresh tokens to this entry's scopes. The 2026-10-09 consenting capture (airtable-tools-list-2026-10-09.json, tokenShape.hasRefreshToken: true, 1-hour access tokens) measured it. Registering without refresh_token would leave every row dead after an hour, which is worse than the risk named here.
The omitted grant_types_supported is RFC 8414's metadata default, not a statement that Airtable refuses the grant. Our CIMD document already declared the same two grants.
If Airtable's register endpoint did refuse the body, /start answers client_registration_refused before any row is written (routes/hostedMcpConnect.ts, discovery and registration run before the row upsert), so nothing half-made is left behind.
Whether Airtable accepts this exact body is listed under "Not measured" in the PR body. The post-deploy walk is the first registration, and it settles both registration and the first refresh. Probing the endpoint from here would create a real client at Airtable, so I haven't.
Live metadata. I fetched https://airtable.com/.well-known/oauth-authorization-server/oauth2/v1 raw (200, application/json) and diffed it, key-sorted, against the committed capture's metadata. They are identical. A deliberate one-key change does show up in the same diff. registration_endpoint is https://airtable.com/oauth2/v1/register, issuer matches the entry, and token_endpoint_auth_methods_supported is client_secret_basic, none.
Discovery URL.hostedMcpIntakeService builds origin + /.well-known/oauth-authorization-server + path for the issuer. For https://airtable.com/oauth2/v1 that is the URL the capture records.
Public client, no secret.registrationMethod returns none whenever the issuer lists it, so Airtable registers public. The registry then refuses any answer that carries a client_secret or a method other than none (hostedMcpDcrRegistry.ts:169-175), and clientSecretRef stays null. The new service test asserts that row.
Order on start. In routes/hostedMcpConnect.ts, discovery and ensureDcrClient both run before any Integration write, so a refused registration leaves no half-made row.
Suites. The two touched suites pass 72/72. All 16 hosted-MCP suites pass 353/353 at this head. CI: 23 success, 4 skipped, 0 failed.
Mutations, one at a time, restored after each:
M1, entry back to cimd: both new tests red, nothing else
M2, registry never picks none: red, including the Airtable public-client test
M3, capture's registration_endpoint moved: both new tests red
M4, capture drops none: both new tests red
CodeRabbit. One item (thread 4396781114, refresh_token in the registration body), answered not fixing in PR comment 6460408742. I checked both facts the reply rests on. The 2026-10-09 capture has hasRefreshToken: true with 3600 s tokens, and the start ordering is as described above. The review body has no other items.
Not blocking, for the walk. Airtable's answer to the registration POST is unmeasured, as the PR body says. The registry accepts a public client only if the answer echoes token_endpoint_auth_method: "none". If Airtable leaves that field out, or returns a secret anyway, start fails closed with client_registration_unsupported. If the walk shows that error, look at that echo first.

Otto, gate measured at f15fdd8d95. CI: 22 passed, 4 skipped, CLEAN. The one CodeRabbit thread (r4396781114, refresh_token in the registration body) is answered in a PR comment that links to it.
Registration endpoint. Start calls discoverAuthorizationServer(entry.issuer) (hostedMcpConnect.ts:265). That fetches the RFC 8414 URL built from the issuer and refuses any document whose issuer differs from the entry's (hostedMcpIntakeService.ts:328). ensureDcrClient POSTs only to that document's registration_endpoint, and refuses a missing or non-https one before any POST (hostedMcpDcrRegistry.ts:117-132). I fetched Airtable's metadata live at 06:3xZ. It matches the committed fixture key for key:
So registrationMethod picks none and stores no secret.
Cached per instance. One current row per {entryId, issuer}. It is reused while the callback matches and it isn't refused. A public client never lapses, so a connect after the first doesn't re-register. The unique index plus the 11000 path makes two concurrent first starts share one client.
redirect_uris. The body sends [hostedMcpCallbackUrl(entry.id)], the same function the authorize and token calls use. The answer must echo exactly that one URI, with token_endpoint_auth_method: 'none' and no secret, or nothing is stored.
Visibility. Airtable stays hidden behind the values-dev flag from #2898, which this PR doesn't touch.
Tests at head: 72/72 across hostedMcpDcrRegistry and hostedMcpEntry.
Mutants:
entry back to cimd: 2 failed
drop reuse of the stored client: 2 failed
prefer a secret method over none: 6 failed
POST to ${entry.issuer}/register instead of metadata.registration_endpoint: 72/72 pass, survives. Airtable's capture and the generic fixture (hostedMcpDcrRegistry.test.js:34) both put the endpoint at issuer + /register. So the tests pin the URL's value but not that it comes from metadata.
accept an answer that doesn't confirm the callback (confirmsCallback → true): 72/72 pass, survives. The Airtable test pins the redirect_uris we send. Nothing pins the check on what comes back.
Both survivors sit in the registry from #2377, not in this diff. They now guard a production entry, so they're worth a follow-up row. That needs one generic case with registration_endpoint on a different path from the issuer, and one with a mismatched redirect_uris in the answer. It isn't a reason to hold this PR.
Note for the walk: if Airtable returns a 2xx that fails the strict confirm (for example it omits token_endpoint_auth_method, or echoes extra redirect_uris), start answers client_registration_unsupported, not the client_registration_refused named in the PR body. That leaves a client at Airtable with no row behind it, and each retry registers another one. Start is authed and behind writeIntegrationsRateLimit, so it's bounded, but stop after the first such failure and read the answer.
