chore(skills): keep one skills catalog index under backend/docs/skills (TASK-029) - #2938
no template; backend-config.yaml.Files.Gets only marketplace.json, SKILLS_CATALOG.md, AWESOME_AGENT_SKILLS.md and ca.pem
unread, and a different version (sha 9f58a8b7 vs a625c896)
The root and backend copies were byte-identical (a625c896…).
What changed
Kept:backend/docs/skills/awesome-agent-skills-index.json. It is the only location the image can bake, so the init-container fallback and the image layout stay as they are.
Deleted:docs/skills/awesome-agent-skills-index.json and k8s/helm/commonly/configs/awesome-agent-skills-index.json.
New backend/services/skillsCatalogPath.ts is the one resolver: SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH, then SKILLS_CATALOG_DIR, then the bundled copy. It finds the backend root from both services/ and dist/services/. The catalog reader, the refresh writer and the preset auto-import all use it, replacing three copies of the resolution logic. The preset import now honours SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH like the other two. In k8s and compose that env names the same /app/docs/skills file it used to hard-code, so its behaviour there is unchanged.
Compose mounts ./backend/docs/skills:/app/docs/skills:ro (still read-only). The generator's default output is the kept copy.
Doc references updated: ADR-013, the bundled-skills README, SKILLS_CATALOG.md (both), the render-harness runbook, the docs-wash inventory and fleet-skills/testing.
docs/skills/SKILLS_CATALOG.md stays. Only the index moved. TASK-520 (the OpenClaw catalogue) is untouched.
Proof
skillsCatalogPath.test.js covers both layouts (/repo/backend/services → /repo/backend, /app/dist/services → /app), the default pointing at an existing file, the env precedence, and that the two deleted copies stay gone.
From a real tsc -p tsconfig.build.json build, dist/services/skillsCatalogPath resolves BUNDLED_CATALOG_PATH to backend/docs/skills/awesome-agent-skills-index.json, and the file exists.
…s (TASK-029)
The 2.6 MB awesome-agent-skills-index.json was checked in three times.
backend/docs/skills/ is the only copy the image can bake (backend is the
Docker build context), and the Helm init container falls back to it at
/app/docs/skills/. The repo-root copy fed only local ts-node runs, compose
mounts and the generator. The Helm configs/ copy was a different version
that no template reads.
- Delete docs/skills/ and k8s/helm/commonly/configs/ copies.
- Add services/skillsCatalogPath.ts: one resolver (SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH,
then SKILLS_CATALOG_DIR, then the bundled copy) used by the catalog
reader, the refresh writer and the preset auto-import, which resolves the
backend root from both services/ and dist/services/.
- Compose mounts and the generator's default output point at the kept copy.
- Doc references updated.

The backend now resolves the skills catalog path through a shared module. Catalog consumers, the index generator, Compose mounts, and documentation reference the catalog under backend/docs/skills/.
Adds backend-root detection and a resolver that prefers SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH, then SKILLS_CATALOG_DIR, then the bundled catalog path. Tests cover those paths and the source and built layouts.
Backend service adoption backend/services/presetSkillsAutoImport.ts, backend/services/skillsCatalogService.ts, backend/services/skillsRefreshService.ts
Catalog loading, refresh fallback reads, and output writes use the shared resolver instead of local path selection.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2525: Adds catalog search and import through GET /api/skills/catalog, which uses the catalog data flow affected by this change.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 5f023
The change consolidates the skills catalog to a single backend copy, and the runtime paths and mounts are consistent. Two small follow-ups remain: the preset import caches the catalog for the life of the process, and the generator's new default output path has no regression test. Neither blocks the merge.

Add a regression test for the generator default path.
The reported skillsCatalogPath.test.js checks the resolver and catalog locations, but it does not execute scripts/generate-awesome-skills-index.js. Add a fixture-based test that omits --out, asserts creation under backend/docs/skills/awesome-agent-skills-index.json, and asserts that the deleted root path is not created. The assertion must fail if Line 18 is reverted. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @scripts/generate-awesome-skills-index.js at line 18:
Add a fixture-based regression test that executes
generate-awesome-skills-index.js without --out, asserts the index is created at
the backend/docs/skills default path, and verifies the deleted root-level path
is not created; ensure the test fails if the generator’s default path is
reverted.
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Locate the repository root in container tests.
In docker-compose.dev.yml, the backend is mounted at /app and the repository at /repo. This calculation therefore checks /docs and /k8s, not the repository. The absence test passes even if both deleted copies return. Locate the mounted repository or fail when it is unavailable. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, “For any negative search or absence result, verify the instrument ran and what it covered.”

- Line 60: Update loadCatalog’s cache handling so a refresh that writes the
resolver-selected catalog causes subsequent preset imports to read the updated
catalog instead of using a cached success or failure; preserve
resolveSkillsCatalogPath() as the selected-path resolver.

not fixing: the stale cache predates this PR, as the comment itself says, and this change doesn't widen it in any deployed environment. In k8s and compose, SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH names /app/docs/skills/awesome-agent-skills-index.json, which is the same file the old hard-coded REPO_ROOT/docs/skills/… path resolved to in the image. So the preset import reads the same file and caches it the same way as before. The refresh mostly rewrites stars, and the preset import only needs sourceUrl. Mtime-based invalidation like skillsCatalogService's would be a separate change from TASK-029's one-copy cleanup.

Self-review (D218) at head 5f02330, by Ember. An Opus subagent read the diff against merge-base 7d091a4, REVIEW.md and the review checklist.
Verified
No data lost. The deleted root copy and the kept backend/docs/skills/awesome-agent-skills-index.json are byte-identical (1659 items). The deleted Helm JSON was an older snapshot, and nothing in the chart reads it: the only .Files.Get is configs/SKILLS_CATALOG.md.
Image.backend/.dockerignore re-includes docs/skills/, and backendRootFrom resolves /app from /app/dist/services, which is the same path the old __dirname/../../docs/skills produced.
Helm. The skills-catalog-bootstrap init container uses only /app/docs/skills and the download URL. SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH is unchanged in the backend and ops-runner deployments.
Compose. Dev and prod both mount ./backend/docs/skills:/app/docs/skills:ro. The mount was read-only before as well.
Local ts-node and jest. The fallback now lands on the backend copy, which exists.
Stale references. A repo-wide grep (docs, scripts, .github, k8s, Dockerfiles) finds no live reference to either deleted path.
Resolver. An empty env string falls through. DIR and filename are joined with path.join. Precedence matches the two inlined copies it replaces.
Tests and lint.skillsCatalogPath.test.js, skillsRefreshService.githubAuth.test.js and silentFailure.distinguishable.test.js pass (15/15). eslint and tsc report 0 errors on the touched services. CI is green.
Notes (none block)
presetSkillsAutoImport.ts:60 now honours SKILLS_CATALOG_PATH/SKILLS_CATALOG_DIR, as the PR body states. Where the env names a file that hasn't been written yet (the UI harness's /tmp/ui-harness-skills-index.json before its first refresh succeeds), loadCatalog caches an empty map, so catalog-sourced preset skills are skipped until restart. Cache invalidation is the follow-up already agreed on the CodeRabbit thread. It doesn't affect k8s or compose, where the env equals the old path.
The resolver test has no empty-string case, and it doesn't check that the three services call the resolver.
Pre-existing issues, left for a follow-up:
BUNDLED_SKILLS_DIR resolves to <repo>/commonly-bundled-skills under ts-node.
scripts/sync-awesome-agent-skills.sh is cited but doesn't exist.
skillsRefreshService.ts has a double blank line.
CodeRabbit: its one Major (cache after refresh) is answered and withdrawn by CodeRabbit as predating this PR.
