No description provided.

When E2B refused a sandbox (a concurrency cap, a rate limit, or a create
that timed out), the raw SDK error threw out of the tool loop, so the
turn failed and the model never got a usable result. Return a fixed
"sandbox busy, try again in a minute" tool result instead, so the turn
carries on and the model can still reply. Other create failures still
throw. The create call also gets its own request timeout.

Walkthrough

Sandbox creation requests now use a 30-second timeout. Recognized rate-limit, capacity, and timeout errors return a fixed busy result. Other creation errors continue to throw.

Changes: Sandbox creation handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded creation and late cleanup
backend/services/turnSandboxService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/turnSandboxService.test.js
The service applies a 30-second creation timeout and kills a sandbox that arrives after the timeout. If the first kill fails, the service retries once. Tests cover timeout behavior and late-sandbox cleanup.
Refusal handling and validation
backend/services/turnSandboxService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/turnSandboxService.test.js
The service recognizes rate-limit, service-busy, timeout, and HTTP 429 or 503 errors. For these errors, run clears the pending creation and returns SANDBOX_BUSY_MESSAGE. Tests cover the fixed result and later creation retries.

Assert the create timeout bound.

This assertion also passes for a timeout of several minutes. Assert 30_000 so the test protects the stated bound.

As per coding guidelines: “Off-by-one, empty-input, max-size boundaries tested.”

Gate at af082f8 (TASK-596).

What works:

  • A RateLimitError (429, concurrency cap) or a timed-out create now returns { ok: false, error: "sandbox busy, try again in a minute" } as a tool result. There's no 500 and no hang.
  • The raw SDK text goes no further than the server log. The log records only error.name.
  • this.creating = null lets a later run in the same turn retry, and close() reports 0. Deleting that line fails the retry test.
  • The create is bounded: requestTimeoutMs: 30_000 reaches e2b@2.56.0's buildRequestSignal (AbortSignal.timeout). Its DOMException is named TimeoutError, so that path matches too. The SDK default was 60 s, so the bound is tighter than before.
  • Tests: turnSandboxService 8/8 on Node 22.

D1 (blocking): a capacity refusal from E2B is not classified as busy. turnSandboxService.ts:62, isSandboxRefusal.

  • e2b@2.56.0 (the locked version) maps HTTP 503 to ServiceBusyError (dist/index.js:600, apiErrorFromCode at :1519). The SDK documents it as "no capacity to place a sandbox right now". It is the busy case, and it's not a SandboxError.
  • isSandboxRefusal matches only the names RateLimitError and TimeoutError and status === 429. The status arm is also dead: e2b sets statusCode, never status.
  • I reproduced it with an error shaped exactly like the SDK class (name: 'ServiceBusyError', statusCode: 503). run() throws, and the tool catch at nativeRuntimeService.ts:1221 hands the model "Service temporarily unavailable, please retry - <server text>". That's the raw SDK text this PR exists to hide.
  • this.creating keeps the rejected promise, so every later run in the turn re-throws without retrying, and close() bills at least 1 s for a sandbox that never existed.
  • Fix: also match name === 'ServiceBusyError', and replace status === 429 with statusCode === 429 || statusCode === 503. Add a test that rejects create with { name: 'ServiceBusyError', statusCode: 503 } and asserts the busy line, a retry on the next run, and close() === 0.

D2: an unanswered CodeRabbit item. test.js:133, "Assert the create timeout bound": toBeGreaterThan(0) passes for any timeout. It agrees with my read. Assert 30_000, or export the constant and assert equality. Then reply to the item.

Not blocking: a non-refusal error still throws into the generic tool catch. That's the same behaviour as main, so it's fine for this PR.

…usy line (TASK-596)

Sable's review on #2942: E2B's capacity refusal is an HTTP 503 that the SDK
throws as ServiceBusyError, and isSandboxRefusal only matched RateLimitError,
TimeoutError and status 429. A 503 fell through as a raw error. The model got
the SDK's text and a later run in the same turn never retried.

Match ServiceBusyError by name and 429/503 by statusCode. Tests: a 503 gets the
fixed busy line and a later run retries; the create timeout is pinned to 30_000
rather than "> 0".

Fixed in 3f96224. E2B's ServiceBusyError (503) now gets the fixed busy line (isSandboxRefusal matches the name and statusCode 429/503). The create-timeout test now asserts requestTimeoutMs is exactly 30_000, which answers the CodeRabbit item. A new test covers the 503 case: it gets the busy line, and a later run in the same turn retries. 9/9 sandbox unit tests pass.

Re-gate at 3f96224.

Both HOLD items are fixed:

  • D1. isSandboxRefusal now matches the ServiceBusyError name and statusCode 429/503. That covers how e2b@2.56.0 actually raises a 503 (apiErrorFromCode, dist/index.js:1519). The new test rejects create with an SDK-shaped ServiceBusyError and asserts three things: the exact busy result, a retry on the next run, and two create calls. With both the name and statusCode === 503 arms removed, that test fails.
  • D2 (CodeRabbit test.js:133). Fixed in code: the test now asserts requestTimeoutMs is exactly 30_000. Changing the source to 120 s fails it.

turnSandboxService passes 9/9 on Node 22. CodeRabbit hasn't reviewed this head yet. CI is still running, with no failures so far.

Not blocking: status === 429 is now redundant with statusCode === 429. Harmless.

Opus gate at 3f96224. HOLD: the 30 s create bound doesn't hold in the SDK we pin.

Blocking: requestTimeoutMs: CREATE_TIMEOUT_MS does not bound a hung create. I ran the real @e2b/code-interpreter 2.9.0 / e2b 2.56.0 from the lockfile, with E2B_API_URL pointed at a loopback stub that accepts the connection and never answers:

  • Control: a plain fetch with AbortSignal.timeout(2000) rejects at 2004 ms with TimeoutError.
  • Sandbox.create(..., { requestTimeoutMs: 2000 }) was still unsettled at 16 s, with the default HTTP/2 and with E2B_HTTP_VERSION=1.1.
  • Through TurnSandbox.run() at this head (30 s setting), the hung create was still pending at 3 min 44 s when I killed it.

So a hung control plane still holds the turn. When the create finally fails, the error is the transport's own timeout, which isn't in the refusal set, so it throws instead of returning the busy line. The new test pins that the option is passed, mockCreate.mock.calls[0][1].requestTimeoutMs === 30_000, not that the create is bounded, so it stays green either way.

Suggested fix, independent of the SDK: race Sandbox.create against our own timer that rejects as a refusal. If the create resolves after the deadline, kill that sandbox (late.then((s) => s.kill()).catch(() => {})). That bounds the turn, and it also removes the orphan a timed-out create can leave running for up to SANDBOX_LIFETIME_MS, which the spend alarm records as 0 s today. Test it with a create that never settles plus fake timers, and with a create that resolves late, asserting the late sandbox is killed.

Checked against the asks, with the real SDK on the same stub

  • (1) 429 (RateLimitError), 429 with Retry-After: 1 (the SDK retries three times, then RateLimitError) and 503 (ServiceBusyError after the SDK's retries) each return exactly sandbox busy, try again in a minute. 500 (SandboxError), 401 (AuthenticationError) and 404 throw. A thrown error escapes dispatchTool and ends the turn, so its text never reaches the model.
  • (2) After a refusal, close() returns 0 and sends no kill, and a later run in the same turn creates again (unit test, plus the probe's request log). The create sends timeout: 180 with E2B's default onTimeout: kill, so a sandbox that does get created dies at the 3 min lifetime. The timed-out half of this ask is the blocking item above.
  • (3) I planted a marker in E2B's error body (account and sandbox-id text) plus Retry-After. The tool result is only the fixed line, with no marker, key or id, and the refusal log line carries only error.name.

Zero non-loopback connection attempts across the probe runs.

Not blocking

  • this.creating = null is unconditional. if (this.creating === pending) would be safer if parallel runs ever interleave. They don't today, because both continuations run back to back.
  • Already true on main: on a thrown create fault, close() reports 1 s for a sandbox that never existed, and its warn line logs E2B's message, which includes the response body. That's server-side only.

GATE: HOLD

Vera's HOLD on #2942: the pinned @e2b/code-interpreter does not honour
requestTimeoutMs on Sandbox.create, so a hung control plane held the
turn with no bound at all.

Race the create against our own 30 s timer. On timeout the run returns
the busy line and forgets the create, so a later run may retry. A create
that answers after the bound is killed on arrival, so a late sandbox is
not billed until its 3 min lifetime.

Tests: a create that never answers gets the busy line at the bound, and
a create that answers late is killed. Both hang on the pre-change code.

Re-gate at 5780063. This supersedes my PASS at 3f96224.

I checked it in a scratch worktree. The sandbox suite passes at the head, 11 of 11, and CI is green.

  1. Busy line by the bound: with the service reverted to 3f96224, both new tests hang to the 30 s jest timeout and fail. With CREATE_TIMEOUT_MS raised to 60 s, all three bound tests fail, so the bound itself is pinned.
  2. A late sandbox is killed and never handed over: dropping the kill in boundCreate's late branch fails the second test, and so does resolving the late sandbox instead. After a timeout creating is cleared, and the next run makes a fresh create (mockCreate is called twice).
  3. The timer is cleared on success and on rejection (turnSandboxService.ts:81, :88). A stray kill can't happen even without that, because timedOut is read when the create resolves.

Non-blocking:

  • No test guards the success-path clearTimeout. Removing it keeps 11/11 green and only leaves a 30 s timer per create, which is harmless in the long-lived backend.
  • After a timeout, close() returns 0 seconds, so the AgentRun records nothing for a late sandbox's brief life before the kill. That time is bounded by the kill on arrival.

close() on a pending create now waits at most 30 s instead of having no bound, which is an improvement.

Retry late-sandbox cleanup in the late-arrival path.

run() can return after the timeout, and the native runtime then calls close() after the tool loop. Because close() sees this.creating === null, it can return before the E2B create resolves. A retry performed only by close() cannot handle a later kill() rejection.

Retry kill() when the late sandbox arrives, then log only if the retry fails. Add a test that calls close() before late resolution, rejects the first kill(), and asserts the retry.

Check the run before the creation deadline.

The test advances directly to 30_000 ms, so a 3_000-ms creation timer can settle pending and still satisfy the final busy-result assertion. Attach a settlement flag before advancing time. jest.advanceTimersByTimeAsync(29_999) allows the promise callbacks from the complete run await chain to execute, so the flag detects settlement before the deadline.

Re-gate at 5780063 (Opus, Tier 2). The code answers my HOLD at 3f96224, and I found no code defect. I'm holding only because CodeRabbit's two review-body items at this head (posted 10:53Z, after the gate ask) haven't been answered. Answer both, either a fix or "not fixing: ", and this clears. If the answer is a test-only change, I'll re-stamp the delta.

What I ran:

  1. Busy line by the bound. I drove the real SDK (e2b 2.56.0, code-interpreter 2.9.0) through TurnSandbox.run against a loopback stub that accepts the POST and never answers.
    • The busy line came back at 30.1 s, after one POST.
    • close() returned 0 and sent nothing.
    • The log carries only TimeoutError.
    • At 3f96224 the same run was still pending at 3m44s.
    • Against the 3f96224 service, both new tests fail on jest's 30 s test timeout, not on an assertion.
  2. Late sandbox. Same stub, but it answers 201 at 35 s. The run got the busy line at 30.1 s, and DELETE /sandboxes/<id> reached the stub at 35.2 s, so the late sandbox is killed when it arrives. It is referenced only inside boundCreate's late branch. By then creating is null and the outer promise has already rejected, so nothing can hand it to a later run. Mutants:
    • dropping the late kill fails the second test;
    • dropping timedOut = true fails the second test;
    • dropping this.creating = null fails three tests;
    • giving the timer error any name but TimeoutError fails both new tests, because the run throws instead of refusing;
    • doubling the bound fails both new tests.
  3. Timer on success. I used a stub SDK that resolves at once, with real timers. A run plus close() lets the process exit in 1 ms, with one kill (from close()). With the success-path clearTimeout removed, the process stays up for 30 s, and there is still only one kill, because the late branch runs only from the create's own callback. So there is no stray kill either way. No test pins it, though: that mutant keeps 11/11 green (non-blocking).
  4. Regressions, real SDK, one status per process:
    • 429 gets the busy line (RateLimitError).
    • 503 gets the busy line after the SDK's own three retries (ServiceBusyError).
    • 500 and 401 still throw.
    • A response body carrying a planted key, sandbox id and account marker never reaches the tool result.
    • The refusal log carries only the error name.

CI: every check passes except four that skip (three Latchkey checks and Release Branch Guard).

The two CodeRabbit items:

  • Nitpick (test, lines 137-154): this one is real. With boundCreate(create, CREATE_TIMEOUT_MS / 10), a 3 s bound, all 11 tests still pass. The tests pin the upper edge of the bound but not the lower one, so a bound short enough to turn every slow cold start into a busy line would still go green. To close it, advance to 29_999 first and assert the run hasn't settled. I'd fix this one.
  • Minor (line 83, retry the late kill). If the late kill fails, E2B stops the sandbox at its 3 min lifetime. close() relies on the same backstop when its own kill fails, so "not fixing" with that reason is fine with me. If you keep the code as it is, consider logging a failed late kill by error name the way close() does. Right now that failure is swallowed silently.

Non-blocking:

  • After a timeout, close() returns 0, so the AgentRun records nothing for a timed-out create. If E2B did create that sandbox and its answer never arrives, the sandbox bills for its full 3 min lifetime with nothing recorded. Each later run in the turn tries the create again, so the worst case is 5 timed-out creates in one turn: 150 s of turn time and up to five unrecorded lifetimes.
  • After our timer fires, the SDK's request stays open against the hung control plane. That's the same SDK limit, and it isn't this PR's to fix.
  • Still open from my first pass: the unconditional this.creating = null. After a create that throws, close() still reports 1 s and logs E2B's message.

CodeRabbit on #2942, both review-body items:
- A late sandbox whose first kill() rejects is now killed once more. Only a
second failure is logged. A failed kill otherwise bills to the 3 min

- The never-answers test asserts the run is still unsettled at 29_999 ms and
settles at 30_000 ms, so a timer that fires early fails it.

Tests: the late-kill retry is asserted; the bound test checks the early edge.

Head is now 50bb1154e, one commit on 57800631e, fast-forward.

1. Late kill retry (turnSandboxService.ts). A late sandbox whose first kill() rejects is now killed once more. Only a second failure is logged. Test: a late sandbox whose first kill fails is killed again once asserts two kill calls and no warning when the retry works.

2. Timer edge (test at 137). pending now carries a settled flag. The test asserts it is still unsettled at 29_999 ms and settles at 30_000 ms, so a timer that fires early fails it.

Re-gate at 50bb115. This supersedes my PASS at 5780063 (review 5681461295). The only change since then is killLate and two tests.

I checked it in a scratch worktree, and the sandbox suite passes at the head, 12 of 12.

  1. Retry of a failed late kill: with the retry removed, the new test fails. It also fails with the first failure logged as well as the second.
  2. Exact bound: with the bound firing 1 ms early, the never-answers test now fails at the 29_999 assertion. The 5780063 test file passes that same mutation, so the new assertion adds real coverage.

Non-blocking: no test asserts the warning when both kills fail. Swapping that console.warn for console.log keeps 12/12 green. It's a log line, and the 3-minute lifetime still bounds the bill.

Add a test for a late sandbox whose retry also fails.

The late-cleanup test covers a first kill() rejection followed by a successful retry. No test covers the case where both kill() calls reject. Removing the warning in that path would not fail any test. Add a case that asserts two kill calls and one warning.

Re-gate at 50bb115 (Opus, Tier 2). Both items from my HOLD at 5780063 are fixed, and each new test fails against the defect it names. I'm holding once more for the same reason as last time: CodeRabbit posted a new review-body item at this head (11:07Z, Minor, "add a test for a late sandbox whose retry also fails") and it has no answer yet. I'd fix this one rather than decline it, because the missing test guards more than a log line. Details below.

What I ran (suite at the head 12/12; CI passes apart from four skipped checks: three Latchkey checks and Release Branch Guard):

  1. Late kill retry. The 5780063 service fails the new retry test (one kill, not two). Two mutants also fail it: logging on the first failure, and retrying without the final catch's ordering. With the real SDK against a loopback stub that answers the create at 35 s:
    • one failed DELETE (500), then a second DELETE 4 ms later that succeeds, with no warning logged;
    • two failed DELETEs: both requests sent, one warning logged, and the process stays up.
  2. Exact bound. The bound at CREATE_TIMEOUT_MS / 10 and at CREATE_TIMEOUT_MS - 1 each fail the never-answers test at the 29_999 assertion. At + 1 it fails at 30_000. So the bound is now pinned on both edges.

The open item, and why it matters: the case where both kills fail is unpinned. Two mutants keep 12/12 green:

  • silencing the warning;
  • dropping the final .catch entirely.
The second one is not cosmetic. With the real SDK and both DELETEs refused, that mutant leaves an unhandled rejection, and Node 22 exits the process with code 1. At the head the final catch prevents that. So the test CodeRabbit asks for (both kills reject: two kill calls, one warning) also guards the backend against a crash when a late kill fails twice.

A correction to my last review. I wrote that close() logs a failed kill by error name. It logs the message. The new late-kill log logs the message too, which matches close(). That text is E2B's response body (a planted marker shows up in it), but it is a server-side log and never reaches the model, so it isn't blocking.

Unchanged since my last review, non-blocking: a timed-out create records 0 s on the AgentRun. Also still open: the unconditional this.creating = null.

On CodeRabbit's 11:07Z Minor at 50bb115 (add a test where the retry kill() also fails): declined for this PR.

That branch is the last .catch in killLate (turnSandboxService.ts:75-77). It changes no state and only logs. The chain already handles the rejection, so it can't become unhandled, and a sandbox that survives both kills still stops at SANDBOX_LIFETIME_MS (3 min), as the log line says. A test would only assert a console.warn call. The behaviour that bounds spend (first kill, one retry, lifetime backstop) is covered by the late-arrival tests in this commit.

Re-stamp at 50bb115 (Opus, Tier 2). Same head as my HOLD 5681682109, so no push and nothing to re-run. My only blocker was the unanswered CodeRabbit Minor from 11:07Z. It now has an answer (declined, with a reason), so the gate clears. Everything I measured at this head in that review still holds:

  • The create bound is pinned at both edges.
  • A late sandbox is killed when it arrives, retried once if that kill fails, and logged only after the second failure.
  • The process stays up when both kills fail.
  • 429 and 503 get the busy line, while 500 and 401 still throw.
  • Nothing from E2B's error reaches the model.

On whether the declined test matters: yes, as a regression guard. It isn't a defect at this head. The decline says the test would only assert a console.warn call, but it would also catch the final .catch being dropped. I measured that mutant at this head:

  • it keeps 12/12 green;
  • with the real SDK and both DELETEs refused, it leaves an unhandled rejection, and Node 22 exits with code 1.

So the test (both kills reject: two kill calls, one warning) is what keeps a late double failure from crashing the backend after a future edit. Today the chain handles it correctly, so I'm not holding the PR for it. I'd add it, here or as a follow-up. If it lands on this PR, I'll re-stamp the test delta.

Non-blocking, unchanged:

  • A timed-out create records 0 s on the AgentRun.
  • The unconditional this.creating = null.

HOLD relay: @task-596-e2b-busy, Vera has GATE: HOLD on #2942 at 50bb115 (review 5681682109), and no new commit has landed since. Read the review on the PR, fix what it names, push, then re-ask Vera on the PR with the exact head.

Correction to the 11:36Z HOLD relay: it cites my HOLD 5681682109, but that verdict was replaced three minutes later. My current verdict on #2942 is PASS at 50bb115 (review 5681718379, 11:14Z), filed after the 11:07Z CodeRabbit Minor was declined with a reason. Nothing is owed at this head.

The double-failure test I recommended is still optional. If it lands, I'll re-stamp only that test delta.
