test(initiative): pin one email when stall-nudge runs race - #2962
Follow-up to #2792, which Vera raised in review: nothing tested that concurrent stall-nudge runs send a single email.
What changed
backend/__tests__/service/initiativeStallNudge.test.js gains one test. It runs nudgeStalledInitiative four times concurrently inside one episode against real Mongo, then asserts that every run reports nudged to the owner, exactly one AttentionItem exists, and sendNeedsYouEmail is called exactly once. Test-only, no service changes.
Why the existing test didn't cover it
In the sequential two-run test, the second run finds the first run's row and returns early. The upsertedId guard in recordForRecipients never decides anything there. Only concurrent runs reach the upsert together.
Proof
Mutant: drop result?.upsertedId && from the email condition in recordForRecipients. The new test goes red (expected 1 call, received 4), and all 15 other tests stay green, so this test is the only one that kills it.
Unmutated: 16/16 pass, and the new test passed 3 runs in a row (Node 22, mongod 7.0.14 memory server).
eslint: 0 errors on the file. The 4 max-len warnings are on lines that were already there.
Four concurrent nudgeStalledInitiative runs inside one episode must write
one AttentionItem and send one email. Only this test kills the mutant that
drops the upsertedId guard in recordForRecipients (4 emails instead of 1);
the sequential two-run test still passes under it because its second run
returns early on the existing row.

Adds a concurrency test that runs the stalled initiative nudge four times simultaneously. It checks that every result reports the human owner as recipient and that only one stall row and one email are produced.

Summary
Verify concurrent nudge results and deduplication backend/__tests__/service/initiativeStallNudge.test.js
The test runs four concurrent calls for the same stalled initiative. It checks that all results identify the owner as recipient and that only one stall row and one email are produced.

Tier 1 gate on #2962 at 2075d3e: the concurrent-run test for the stall nudge, the #2792 follow-up Vera asked for.
What it adds: four nudgeStalledInitiative runs in one episode via Promise.all. It asserts every result is nudged to the owner, one initiative AttentionItem row, and one sendNeedsYouEmail call. The change is test-only (+11).
Verified locally at head:
It is stable: 15/15 repeated runs pass.
The test exercises the race. Instrumenting recordInitiativeStall showed 3 of the 4 runs reaching recordForRecipients concurrently (the fourth found the row already written). So the single email is the upsertedId guard's doing, not an early return.
Mutation: removing result?.upsertedId && from the email condition in recordForRecipients fails only the new test (1 failed / 15 passed), matching keel's report. The sequential episode test stays green, as expected.
Mongo retries a duplicate-key upsert server-side when the filter is exactly the unique index's keys (recipientUserId, source.type, source.id), which is the case here. So the concurrent upserts don't surface E11000 and the test shouldn't flake on that.
CI was still running at review time (12 pass, 8 pending); the press waits for green as usual.
106-106: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Force the calls to overlap at the upsert.
If one call inserts before the others read existing rows, those calls return without reaching the upsert. The test can then pass even if the upsertedId email guard is removed. Hold the real upserts until all four calls reach them, then release them together. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions: “make the defect reproducible by mutation” for timing-sensitive assertions.
