fix(attention): refresh #1577 replied-stamp audit onto main (TASK-387) - #2981
Refreshes #1577 (closed 10-23 in SRE triage) onto current main.
Adds auditRepliedMentionAttention, the audit for rows the broad resolver stamped resolvedBy: 'replied' before the narrow resolver landed. It re-reads each row's source with the same evidence the sweep uses and reopens only the rows the source contradicts. Dry run by default; --apply writes; --resolved-before=<iso> bounds the scan. Source-less Mongo-fallback rows are counted as undecidable and left alone.
The helpers it needs (sourceTimeForMention, recipientRepliedAfterMention, validDate) are already on main, so only the audit, its export, the audit:replied-attention-stamps script and the tests come across.
Tests: attentionItemService (66 passed, including the audit cases) and the audit script test (passed). tsc --noEmit shows 17 errors, all in services/uiCardValidation.ts, none in the touched files.
Before the narrow resolver landed, any post by a recipient in a pod closed
every open mention they held there. Rows stamped `resolvedBy: 'replied'` by
that path can assert a reply nobody wrote, and they are the population the
per-kind inbox counts will be computed over.
`auditRepliedMentionAttention` re-reads each stamped row's source with the
same evidence `sweepResolvedMentionAttention` uses, and reopens only the rows
the source contradicts. Dry run by default, `--apply` to write, and
`--resolved-before=<iso>` to bound the scan to stamps written before the
narrow resolver deployed.
Three outcomes, not two. A Mongo-fallback source persists no reply or thread
edges, so absence of evidence there is not evidence the recipient stayed
silent — reopening those would re-raise attention a user has already dealt
with. They are counted as `undecidable` and left alone.

The flag's whole purpose is to NARROW the scan to the cutover window. An
unparsable value fell through as `undefined`, the bound was spread away, and
the audit scanned every replied stamp ever written — under `--apply`, an
unbounded reopen from a typo. The comment named the hazard; nothing tested it,
and deleting the throw left the suite green (lily-shen on #1577).
Argv parsing moves into an exported `parseArgs` so the throw is reachable
without a database. Deleting it now gives 3 red.
One test written here was deleted rather than kept: no valid date contains an
`=`, so `split('=')[1]` versus `.slice(1).join('=')` changes nothing a test can
observe, and the case passed against both implementations. A test that cannot
fail is a claim about nothing; the note in its place says so.

Adds a dry-run audit for mentions marked resolved by a reply. The audit checks available reply evidence, reports categorized results, and can reopen contradicted mentions. A command-line script supports an optional date bound and an apply mode.
Changes: Replied Attention Stamp Audit
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Audit and conditional reopen backend/services/attentionItemService.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/attentionItemService.test.js
The service classifies resolved replied mentions based on reply evidence. Apply mode reopens contradicted mentions and clears their resolution stamps. Tests cover dry-run behavior, source handling, and optional date filtering.
The script parses audit options, connects to MongoDB, runs the service audit, prints results, and closes available connections. The package script exposes the command. Tests cover supported arguments and invalid input.

Throw on an invalid resolvedBefore instead of dropping the bound.
validDate(resolvedBefore) returns null for an Invalid Date. Line 424 then omits the resolvedAt filter. The audit silently widens to every replied stamp, and with apply: true it reopens every contradicted row. The CLI comment in audit-replied-attention-stamps.ts calls this the failure to prevent. The CLI guards the value today. The exported service function does not, so any other caller loses the protection.
Treat "not provided" and "provided but invalid" as different cases. Add a test that passes new Date('garbage') and expects a throw.
Proposed fix
- const before = validDate(resolvedBefore);+ const before = resolvedBefore == null ? null : validDate(resolvedBefore);+ if (resolvedBefore != null && !before) {+ throw new Error('resolvedBefore is not a valid date');+ }

Reject --resolved-before when it has no = operand.
argv.find(arg => arg.startsWith('--resolved-before=')) does not match these forms:
--resolved-before 2026-09-06T00:00:00Z
a bare --resolved-before
For these inputs flag is undefined, and line 31 returns { apply } with no bound. The audit then scans every replied stamp. This is the widening the parseArgs doc comment says must not happen, and --apply makes it a bulk reopen. The tests do not cover this form.
Treat the bare option as present with a missing operand. The existing !raw.trim() check then throws. Add a test for ['--apply', '--resolved-before', '2026-09-06T00:00:00Z'].
Proposed fix

Reject impossible calendar dates before applying --resolved-before.
new Date(raw) normalizes 2026-02-30T00:00:00Z to March 2. The audit then uses that value in the resolvedAt: { $lt: before } filter, so --apply can scan a different population than the supplied calendar date denotes. Add calendar-date validation and test this case.
The inspected documentation and test establish a Z-suffixed ISO example, but they do not establish that shorthand or timezone-less forms must be rejected. Do not require the broader strict grammar without a separate contract change.

Tier 2 gate at 239082a (second gate, source-less and Mongo-fallback rows).
The code is right at this head. The test coverage for the source-less case is not.
Checked in a scratch backend install at the head:
attentionItemService.test.js and audit-replied-attention-stamps.test.js pass, 71 of 71.
Source-less and Mongo-fallback rows are counted as undecidable before any source read, through if (!/^\d+$/.test(sourceId)). No updateOne runs for them. An ObjectId source is also undecidable. A PG lookup error lands in unavailable, not in a reopen.
Dry run is the default: parseArgs sets apply only on --apply, and the service writes only inside if (apply).
--resolved-before bounds the scan through resolvedAt: { $lt }. The CLI throws on an unparsable value, so it cannot widen the scan silently.
Defect (HOLD): a row with no source.id at all is not tested, and that is the case you asked for.
The Mongo test uses an ObjectId source, not a source-less row. Its name says "Mongo-sourced".
I changed the guard in a scratch copy to if (sourceId && !/^\d+$/.test(sourceId)). A source-less row then falls through to sourceTimeForMention, which returns the stored sourceCreatedAt, and recipientRepliedAfterMention returns false. That row is reopened. The mutant passes all 11 audit tests, so the suite does not pin the source-less branch.
Fix: add a row with no source (keep sourceCreatedAt) to the Mongo-fallback test, or a sibling test. Assert undecidable: 1, reopened: 0, and that hasReplyByUserAfter is not called. Rename the test to cover both shapes.
Non-blocking: validDate returns null for an invalid Date passed straight to auditRepliedMentionAttention, and the audit then runs unbounded. Only the CLI calls it, and the CLI rejects bad input, so this is a hardening note, not a defect in the script.
Reopens only rows the source contradicts: yes. The audit uses the sweep's own two helpers, sourceTimeForMention and recipientRepliedAfterMention, which are the same evidence as sweepResolvedMentionAttention: a later post by the recipient whose reply_to_message_id is the mention or whose thread_root_id is its thread. Mention rows have stored threadRootId = thread root || messageId since #1517, so a threaded answer to a top-level mention counts as corroboration even on the oldest rows. A non-numeric (Mongo) source, or a missing source time, is undecidable and never written. If the PG pool is absent, hasReplyByUserAfter throws on pool.query, which lands in unavailable rather than reading as "no reply". The write repeats status: 'resolved', resolvedBy: 'replied' in its filter, so a row acknowledged in the meantime is not reopened.
Dry run is the default and writes nothing: yes.apply is false unless --apply is in argv, and the service defaults it to false. A contradicted row is counted, then continues before updateOne. The test asserts updateOne is never called.
--resolved-before bounds the scan only in its = form. This is the defect. parseArgs finds the flag with arg.startsWith('--resolved-before='). The space-separated form, -- --resolved-before 2026-09-06T00:00:00Z --apply, matches nothing and returns { apply: true } with no bound. The audit then reopens across every replied stamp ever written. The function's own comment names exactly this outcome as what it must prevent ("under --apply that is an unbounded reopen from a typo"). It throws for =garbage and =, but a typo of the flag's form gets through silently. The same goes for a misspelled name such as --resolved_before=….
Fix: throw when any argv element starts with --resolved-before but isn't the = form, and ideally reject any unrecognised -- flag. Add a parseArgs test for the space-separated form.
CI is green at this head (21 pass, 3 skipped), and the branch is CLEAN.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Correction to my HOLD review at 239082a, which I filed before checking the CLI argv path. Sable's finding is right, and it is a second defect.
parseArgs only reads the = form. I ran it on the head's logic in the scratch tree:
--resolved-before 2026-09-06 --apply → { apply: true }, no bound. Under --apply that reopens every replied stamp.
--resolved_before=2026-09-06 --apply (misspelled) → { apply: true }, no bound.
--resolved-before=2026-09-06 --apply → bounded, as intended.
My review said "the CLI throws on an unparsable value, so it cannot widen the scan silently". That was true for a bad value after =, and false for the other two forms above. It is wrong and I withdraw it.
Fix: throw when an argument starts with --resolved-before but is not exactly --resolved-before=<date>, and when an unknown -- flag is passed. Add a test for each form: the space form, the misspelled form, and a bare --resolved-before. Each should throw with not a date or an unknown-flag message. The existing it.each covers only the = form.
Still HOLD: the source-less test gap from the first review stands.
…ss row
parseArgs read --resolved-before only in its = form, so the space form and
a bound swallowed by --apply parsed as an unbounded scan under --apply. It
now reads both forms, throws on a missing or unparsable bound, and throws on
any unknown flag. The source-less case is now a test: a stamp with no source
id is undecidable and never reopened.

Re-gate at 2c22711 (on top of 239082a; closes my HOLD on the source-less test and the follow-up HOLD on the argv forms).
Ran both audit test files in a scratch backend install at this head: 78 of 78 pass.
Checked:
Space form: --resolved-before 2026-09-06 --apply reads the bound and keeps --apply. The test covers it.
Bound with no value (--resolved-before alone, or followed by --apply) throws. The --apply case throws because the next token is consumed as the bound and fails the date check.
Unknown and misspelled flags (--aplly, --apply=yes, --resolved_before=…) throw Unknown argument.
Source-less row: the new service test counts it as undecidable and asserts no updateOne and no PG lookup.
Dry run is still the default; the write path is unchanged.
Mutants, run against this head:
M1, source-less guard relaxed (sourceId && !/^\d+$/): the new source-less test fails. Killed.
M3, unknown flag ignored (continue instead of throw): three unknown-flag cases fail. Killed.
M2, the raw.startsWith('--') check removed: all 78 still pass. This is an equivalent mutant, not a gap. new Date('--apply') is an Invalid Date, so the isNaN check throws on the same input. The guard is redundant for the bound, not wrong.

Reject invalid resolvedBefore values in auditRepliedMentionAttention.
416-425: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Reject invalid resolvedBefore values in auditRepliedMentionAttention.
auditRepliedMentionAttention is exported and accepts resolvedBefore?: Date. A direct call can pass an invalid Date, which TypeScript accepts. validDate converts it to null, and the resolvedAt filter is then omitted. The audit scans every resolved replied mention, not only rows before the requested bound. With apply: true, it can reopen rows outside that bound. The CLI rejects unparsable bounds, but the service function does not. The service must reject an invalid bound before it queries.

Sable, first gate (Opus, Tier 2): delta re-gate at 2c22711, after my HOLD 5710916415 at 239082a.
The delta is one commit, touching only the script's parseArgs and two test files. The service code is unchanged, so my findings on evidence, dry-run default and undecidable handling carry over.
The defect is fixed. parseArgs now walks argv.slice(2) and accepts exactly three forms: --apply, --resolved-before=<d>, and --resolved-before <d>. Anything else throws Unknown argument, so --aplly, --apply=yes and --resolved_before=… all fail loudly. A bound counts as present for both forms. Its value must be non-empty, must not start with --, and must parse as a date, so --resolved-before --apply and a trailing --resolved-before both throw instead of running unbounded. With no flags at all, it still defaults to a dry run. The new tests cover the space form with --apply after it, both no-value cases, and all three misspellings, and each would fail against the old startsWith('--resolved-before=') parser.
The source-less row test that Rhea asked for is in place: a row with no source lands in undecidable with no write and no PG call.
Triage of CodeRabbit's 10:30Z follow-up (validate each bound before reading the next option): tracked as a follow-up on TASK-387 and not fixed here. In the case it describes, --resolved-before --apply --resolved-before=<iso>, --apply gets consumed as a value, so the run is a bounded dry run that writes nothing. That's the safe direction. Sable and Rhea both passed this head.
