fix(chat): a refused send puts its text back in the composer (TASK-503 follow-up) - #2993
Follow-up to #2989 (TASK-503), covering Lark's two non-blocking notes from the b08aee5 gate.
Refused text goes back in the composer. When the server refuses a socket send on messageSendFailed, ChatRoom already drops the optimistic bubble and shows the error. It now also puts the refused text back in the composer, unless the person has already started typing something else, so retrying takes one keystroke.
The event name is pinned on both sides. The server names the event in MESSAGE_SEND_FAILED_EVENT. ChatRoom listens with a string literal. A backend test reads ChatRoom.tsx and checks that both its socket.on and its socket.off use the constant's value, so renaming either side fails CI instead of silently dropping refusals.
Tests
ChatRoom.test.tsx: after a refusal, the composer holds the refused text and the bubble is gone. Each assertion fails against its mutant: no restore, or no bubble removal.
socketMessageWrite.test.js: the event-name link. It fails when the client literal is changed.
Tier 1: a client-side UX change plus a test, with no server behaviour change.
…3 follow-up)
Lark's two non-blocking notes on #2989. ChatRoom now restores the refused
text to the composer unless the person has started typing something else,
so a retry is one keystroke. A backend test pins ChatRoom's on/off listener
literal to the server's MESSAGE_SEND_FAILED_EVENT constant, so a rename on
either side fails CI instead of dropping refusals silently. Each new
assertion fails against its mutant.

ChatRoom now restores the content of a failed text send to the composer when the composer is empty. Tests check that existing drafts are preserved, the failed text is available to resend, and the socket listener uses the shared event constant.

Summary
Restore failed text and verify event handling frontend/src/components/ChatRoom.tsx, backend/__tests__/unit/services/socketMessageWrite.test.js, frontend/src/components/ChatRoom.test.tsx
When a text send fails, ChatRoom fills an empty composer with the failed text and preserves any existing draft. Tests check the restored text and the listener registration and removal event name.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2989: Defines the send-failure event and introduces the refused-send behavior that this change handles.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 188ad
A late refusal may put an older message back in the composer, and an invalid failure payload can prevent the next send. These are bounded failed-send cases, but they warrant fixes or explicit acceptance before merge.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a refused socket send now puts its text back in the chat composer. It also names the scope (chat) and the follow-up to TASK-503. The changeset matches this: ChatRoom.tsx restores refused text to an empty composer in handleSendFailed, and tests cover the restore and the event-name link. The title is specific and does not use vague terms.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states the change: refused text returns to the composer unless the person has started typing, and the event name is pinned between the server constant and ChatRoom listeners. It also lists the tests added in ChatRoom.test.tsx and socketMessageWrite.test.js. These match the raw summary and the PR objectives, so the description is clearly related to the changeset.

Do not restore a refusal after a newer send.
setMessage(current => current || failure.content) checks only the composer at event time. If the user sends A, types and sends B, and then A’s asynchronous refusal arrives, the send path has already cleared the composer, so this line inserts A again. The next click can resend an older message. Track the optimistic send or composer revision and restore text only when no newer input or send exists.

Update the refusal handler in ChatRoom so it restores failure.content only if
the associated send is still current and no newer composer input or send has
occurred; track the send or composer revision and preserve the existing message
when that revision has advanced.

Validate failure.content before restoring it.
If failure.content is a truthy non-string value, the handler stores it in message. The next submit can then throw at message.trim().

Review of #2993 at 188ad89 (TASK-503 follow-up, Ember). It follows my two non-blocking notes on #2989.
Never overwrites a draft: holds. The restore is setMessage(current => current || failure.content). It fills the composer only when the composer is empty, so text the person has typed since the send is kept. If they typed and then cleared, the refused text comes back. That is acceptable.
Refused path only: holds. The restore sits inside handleSendFailed, which runs only on the messageSendFailed event. A successful send never reaches it. It also restores only messageType === 'text' with non-empty content.
Your note 1 (event name pinned): holds.socketMessageWrite.test.js reads ChatRoom.tsx and asserts both socket.on('messageSendFailed', handleSendFailed) and the matching socket.off. A rename on either side fails the test.
Test gaps (non-blocking):
No test covers the draft-preservation branch. The ChatRoom test starts with an empty composer, so current || content takes the restore path. Nothing checks that a typed draft survives a refusal. The branch is correct by reading, but a test would pin the case the ask named.
The reply target is not restored, so a refused reply comes back as plain text. The ask did not cover this, and it is worth a line in the PR body.
I did not run the suites. CI shows no failing or pending rows, and the PR is CLEAN.
