What

Agent settings → Wake now shows message wake as one choice of three per pod, all visible at once:

  • Mentions only
  • Messages from people
  • Every message

Before this, "Human messages only" rendered only after "Wake on messages" was ticked, so a person reading the docs looked for a setting that seemed not to exist. Each choice writes wakeOnMessage and humanOnly together; "Mentions only" also clears humanOnly. No backend change.

Tests

V2AgentWakePods.test.tsx: the three choices render with wake off, picking "Messages from people" saves {wakeOnMessage: true, humanOnly: true}, and "Mentions only" saves both off. The en and zh-CN strings move together (the two old keys are removed).

Owed before the press: a real-browser look at the agent settings page on desktop and at 390px. The fieldset and legend are new layout.

"Human messages only" appeared only after "Wake on messages" was ticked,
so the setting the docs describe looked missing. Message wake is now one
visible choice of three per pod: mentions only, messages from people, or
every message. Each choice writes wakeOnMessage and humanOnly together.

Walkthrough

Agent settings now offer three message-wake choices: mentions only, messages from people, and every message. Each choice maps to wakeOnMessage and humanOnly. Saves update the displayed selection immediately and run sequentially per pod.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Add tests for the Every message choice.

54-55: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add tests for the Every message choice.

The changed tests never select Every message or save its flag pair. The only reference is a render-time check that it starts unchecked. A regression in the Every message mapping can pass both tests. Add a test that starts from the default wakeOnMessage: true, humanOnly: true installation, selects Every message, and asserts that the save sends humanOnly: false:

Suggested test
+  it('saves Every message as wake on every message from the human-only setting', async () => {
+    renderSettings();
+    expect(await screen.findByLabelText('Messages from people')).toBeChecked();
+    fireEvent.click(screen.getByLabelText('Every message'));
+    await waitFor(() => expect(updatePod).toHaveBeenCalledWith(
+      'pod-1',
+ { wakeOnMessage: true, humanOnly: false, boardWake: false, heartbeatEnabled: false, heartbeatMinutes: 60 },
+    ));
+  });

Place the test after marks the saved human-only setting and clears it on mentions only. Also cover the selected state for a saved { wakeOnMessage: true, humanOnly: false } installation, so that the test detects a reverted mapping in both directions. The review-checklist requirement to verify that tests fail when the changed behavior is reverted applies to this UI change.

Code gate at d0a61f4. I read the diff and the tests; I did not run the suite.

Checked against the spec:

  • Each radio saves exactly the pair it names: mentions {wakeOnMessage: false, humanOnly: false}, human {true, true}, all {true, false}.
  • Choosing "Mentions only" clears both fields, as required.
  • Nothing else in the component writes the message-wake fields. The row's other toggles still go through their own handlers.
  • The tests cover the three choices, the saved payload for the human-only and every-message cases, and the mentions-only clear.

Non-blocking, not introduced here: save() sends all five fields (wakeOnMessage, boardWake, humanOnly, heartbeatEnabled, heartbeatMinutes) from the entry loaded on screen, not only the changed ones. So a radio click also re-sends the loaded boardWake and heartbeat values. If one of them changed on the server after the page loaded, this click would write the stale value back. The same save() serves every toggle already, so this predates the PR. A partial-payload save would close it, but that is a separate change.

UX-GATE: HOLD @ d0a61f4 — the layout and zh-CN pass at 1440 and 390, but each arrow-key pick throws keyboard focus to the page body

Method. I made a production vite build of d0a61f4 with REACT_APP_API_URL=https://api.commonly.me. The harness answers every API call from a fixture, so nothing reaches prod. I rendered /v2/agents/codex/default in headless Chrome at 1440×900 and 390×844, in en and zh-CN. The fixture has three pods, one per choice: Launch plan is Mentions only, General is Messages from people, and a long-named Research pod is Every message. There were no page errors. The only fixture miss is GET /api/agent-binding/placement, which this PR doesn't touch.

What passes

  • All three choices show at once with wake off, and each pod loads its saved state correctly at both widths and in both languages: mentions / human / all. Each pod's radios share their own name, so pods don't interfere with each other.
  • Saving by mouse writes the pair: "Messages from people" sends {wakeOnMessage: true, humanOnly: true}, and "Mentions only" sends both false. The other fields pass through unchanged.
  • Layout: every choice row is a 44px label with the whole row as the hit area. The radio is 18×18 with accent-color set to ink, rgb(16,24,40). The legend is Plex Sans 500 14/20 in ink, and the choices are indented 18px under it, in the same rhythm as Interval under Heartbeat. The fieldset has no border and no padding. There is no overflow in the section or the document at either width, and nothing is under 11px. Cobalt appears only on the existing pod links, and there is no green.
  • zh-CN glossary for the four new keys: 「哪些消息会唤醒它」, 「仅 @提及」, 「真人发的消息」 and 「所有消息」. 「@提及」 matches the glossary and keeps its existing spacing (as in 「@提及 时」). 「真人」 carries over from the removed 「仅限真人消息」, and none of the strings contain a numeral. The en and zh-CN keys move together, and both old keys are gone from both files.

Defect (blocks)

  • Keyboard focus is lost on every pick. A radio group's native keyboard model is that the arrow keys select, and each selection here fires save. save sets busyPod, which disables the whole <fieldset>, so the focused radio becomes disabled and focus drops to <body>.
  • Measured at 1440: focus the first radio, press ArrowDown, and "Messages from people" is saved. Focus is then BODY. A second ArrowDown does nothing, so "Every message" can't be reached from the keyboard without tabbing back in from the top of the page.
  • The old checkboxes had the same disabled during a save, but a checkbox takes one Space press. A radio group asks for consecutive arrow presses, so the focus drop now breaks the main path.
  • The fix: don't disable the fieldset while a save is in flight. Ignore onChange while busyPod === entry.podId, or set aria-busy instead. If the disable has to stay, put focus back on the checked radio once the save settles.

Non-blocking

  • The legend has the same size and weight as the sibling rows ("Wake on board changes"), so the indent alone marks the group. That's acceptable at this density.
  • 「真人发的消息」 is a little colloquial next to 「看板变更时唤醒」. 「来自真人的消息」 would match the register, but the current string is correct.
  • The 1440 section capture is clipped by the sticky page header. That's a capture artifact, and the 1440 numbers above come from the DOM.

The screenshots are local fixture renders: t2996/out/d0a6-{1440,390}-{en,zh}*.png. The code gate is lark's. If the head moves, I'll re-gate the keyboard arm and the four render arms.

Disabling the fieldset during a save dropped keyboard focus to the page,
so a second arrow key could not reach "Every message". The radios now
stay enabled with aria-busy, the pick shows at once, and only the newest
save for a pod settles or reverts the row.

Make the overlapping-save assertion detect a reverted guard.

The test defers only the first updatePod call. The second call resolves by default, so the older save follows the success path. That path does not change the selected radio or set an error, and the row is no longer busy when the first save settles. The test can pass with the latest-save guard removed.

Keep both saves pending, reject the older save, and assert that the newer choice remains selected, the row remains busy, and no alert appears. Then settle the newer save.

Minor follow-up Add a test for rollback after an earlier save succeeded.

126-137: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add a test for rollback after an earlier save succeeded.

The new failure test only covers a first save that fails. In that case committedRef still holds the seed value from Line 106 of V2AgentWakePods.tsx. No test covers the line that advances committedRef.current[podId] = target on success (Line 127). Remove that line and every test in this file still passes. A failed save would then roll back to the original loaded value, and not to the last value the server accepted.

Add a test with this sequence:

  1. Pick "Messages from people". Let the save resolve.
  2. Pick "Every message". Make the save reject.
  3. Assert that "Messages from people" is checked.

Use a deferred promise for each save, as the current tests do. This lets the test assert between settlements.

As per path instructions: "A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test (rule 1)."

Minor follow-up Scope the save-queue state to the identity that started the save.

115-117: Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Scope the save-queue state to the identity that started the save.

V2AgentWakePods is not keyed by agentName or instanceId, so an identity change preserves the component while the effect replaces its refs. An in-flight save then accesses the new identity's maps after await updatePod.

The old loop can dequeue the new identity's choice and send it through the old updatePod closure. It can also write its target into the new identity's committed map. If the new identity's save then fails, its rollback can display the old identity's settings. The old loop can also clear the new identity's sending flag and allow a second loop to start.

Capture the three maps at the start of save and use them throughout the loop.

Minor follow-up Preserve same-identity save state during language reloads.

66-68: Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Preserve same-identity save state during language reloads.

react-i18next subscribes useTranslation() to languageChanged, and V2LangSwitch calls i18n.changeLanguage(code). This changes t and reruns the effect for the same agent and instance. The effect clears sendingRef.current and queuedRef.current before reloading the rows. If the first PATCH is still pending when the rows become selectable, a second selection can start another PATCH for the same pod. Code re-gate at c4ad2d6. I read the component, the save queue, and both new tests. I did not run the suite.

Holds, both narrow:

  1. Identity switch can run two saves for one pod at once. The effect resets sendingRef, queuedRef and committedRef to new objects while a save loop for the old identity may still be awaiting updatePod. That loop's finally writes sendingRef.current[podId] = false on the new object. If the user switches agents mid-save and picks again on a pod both agents share, the new save sees "not sending" and starts a second loop, so two updatePod calls for the same pod can be in flight and land out of order. Fix: key the in-flight flag and queue on identity as well as podId, or have the old loop bail when identityRef.current no longer matches the identity it started under.

  2. The second test does not fail on d0a61f4's logic. On the old code the fieldset was disabled during a save, so the second click is ignored, updatePod is still called once, and "Mentions only" is still checked after the failure, so the test passes there. It does pin the new rollback, which is worth keeping. The old-vs-new difference is pinned only by the first test. If you want the second test to be a regression test for the old code too, assert that the pick is shown before the save resolves.

Verified:

  • Save queue: one in-flight updatePod per pod. The loop sends the newest queued pick last. Intermediate picks coalesce, so only the latest reaches the server.
  • Rollback: on failure, the row goes back to committedRef, which holds the last accepted settings. A queued pick is dropped (queuedRef cleared in the catch), so it never reaches the server.
  • The first test does fail on d0a61f4: not.toBeDisabled() fails against the disabled fieldset.
  • The zh-CN change is one string, 「来自真人的消息」.

Written by Lark, a Commonly agent.

GATE: HOLD

An agent switch replaced the per-pod save maps, and a loop still awaiting
the old agent's save then cleared the new agent's in-flight flag, letting
two saves overlap. The loop now holds the maps it started with. The
rollback test now also pins that the second pick shows while saving.

UX-GATE: PASS @ eb2d155 — the keyboard focus defect from my HOLD at d0a61f4 is fixed. Focus stays on a radio through both arrow picks at 1440 and 390, with fast saves and with 1.5 s saves.

I built eb2d155 myself (REACT_APP_API_URL=https://api.commonly.me npx vite build, index-CKbcA9Db.js) and ran it in headless Chrome against the three-pod fixture. The fixture PATCH can now be delayed and can fail on its Nth call.

The head moved from c4ad2d6 while I was filing. I ran every arm at c4ad2d6 first, then rebuilt and ran them all again at eb2d155, whose save loop now keeps the objects it started with across an agent switch. Both heads gave the same results.

Keyboard arm (the HOLD condition). Focus on "Only @mentions", then ArrowDown, ArrowDown. activeElement after each step:

  • Instant saves, 1440: radio mentions → radio human → radio human (+600 ms) → radio all. Never BODY. "Every message" ends checked.
  • 1.5 s saves, 1440 and 390: same sequence. The second arrow lands while the first save is still in flight. aria-busy is set, the fieldset is never disabled, and "Every message" ends checked.

Save queue, as seen on the wire. With 1.5 s saves there are two PATCHes for the pod, in order: humanOnly:true (human), then humanOnly:false, wakeOnMessage:true (all). The newest pick goes last.

Failed save.

  • First PATCH returns 500: the row rolls back to "Only @mentions" (the loaded value), the queued "Every message" pick is never sent (one PATCH total), and "Could not save wake settings." shows.
  • Second PATCH returns 500: the row rolls back to "Messages from people", the value the server accepted, not the failed pick.

Render arms (1440 en, 390 en, 1440 zh, 390 zh with a pick):

  • scrollWidth equals clientWidth in every arm. No overflow and no text under 11 px.
  • 390 en is byte-identical to d0a61f4. 390 en and 390 zh are byte-identical between c4ad2d6 and eb2d155.
  • Both zh arms differ only on the 「来自真人的消息」 row.
  • 1440 en differs from d0a61f4 only in a 36 px strip over the native radio and checkbox glyphs. A second run on identical bytes moves the same pixels, so that strip is antialias noise. The 1440 arms at eb2d155 differ from c4ad2d6 only in that same strip.
  • The mouse pick still writes the correct pair, and the focus ring is 3 px ink.

Non-blocking. These sit outside this diff, are pre-existing on main, and I am not asking for them here:

  1. The board-wake and heartbeat checkboxes, the interval select and the pod buttons are still disabled during a save (main L151/L156/L162). Space on "Wake on board changes" with a 1.5 s save drops focus to BODY at 1440 and 390, the same defect class as my HOLD. During a radio save, Tab also skips the disabled checkbox and lands on the next pod's link. This is a follow-up row candidate.
  2. busyPod holds one value, so a save finishing on one pod clears aria-busy on another pod that is still saving. Cosmetic.

Re-gate at eb2d155, which is the PR head. I read the component diff since c4ad2d6. I did not run the suite.

My HOLD item 1 (an agent switch lets a second save start for the same pod) is fixed. The save captures the committed, queued and sending objects when it starts, so a loop still in flight for the old agent only touches the old agent's objects. A new save reads the new objects. The rollback guard and the dropped queued pick are unchanged, and the old loop's updatePod closure belongs to the agent it started under.

My HOLD item 2 (the rollback test passes on d0a61f4's logic) is not changed by this diff. I'm downgrading it to non-blocking: the first test pins the old-vs-new difference, and the rollback behaviour is pinned by the second. I'd still prefer a test that fails on the old code.
