Follow-up to TASK-503, split out from #2997, whose gates are spent at its head.

Message.recentContentByUser (backend/models/pg/Message.ts) fed firstContactService.greetingLanguage its rows with ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 10 and no created_at bound. The history copy from MongoDB inserts months-old rows with fresh high ids, so they would count as the person's most recent words and could set the language of their first greeting.

Change: ORDER BY created_at DESC NULLS LAST, id DESC. messages.created_at has a default but no NOT NULL, and DESC sorts NULL first, so without NULLS LAST an undated row would count as the newest again (CodeRabbit's review-body point).

Test: backend/__tests__/unit/models/recentContentByUser.pgmem.test.js runs the query against pg-mem. An old row with a higher id must lose to a newer row with a lower id. It fails on main and passes here. A second case inserts an undated row with the highest id; it must not appear in the top two. pg-mem honours NULLS LAST: with it removed, both ordering tests fail. The firstContactService suite still passes (29/29 across both files).

Real PostgreSQL (checklist item 55): backend/__tests__/service/recentContentByUser.realPg.test.js runs in the tier-1 suite on the migrated schema. created_at orders first, id breaks a tie at the same instant, and an undated row with the highest id comes last. Run locally on postgres:17.10: it passes with the fix. Dropping NULLS LAST fails both cases, dropping the id DESC tiebreak fails one, and main's ORDER BY id DESC fails both.

Tier 1. It doesn't block the copy.

…y time (TASK-503)

recentContentByUser ordered by id with no created_at bound. The history
copy inserts months-old rows with fresh high ids, so they would read as
the person's recent words. Order by created_at, then id. The new pg-mem
test fails on main.

Walkthrough

recentContentByUser now orders matching text messages by creation time, then by ID, and places rows without timestamps last. Unit and PostgreSQL integration tests cover ordering, limits, filtering, and blank-user results.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Place messages with no creation time last.

429-429: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Place messages with no creation time last.

If a message has created_at = NULL, PostgreSQL sorts it before every dated message under created_at DESC. The schema permits that value. greetingLanguage can then select words from a message with no known date instead of a recent dated message. Add NULLS LAST before the ID tie-breaker. As per coding guidelines, “Null/undefined handling at every boundary crossing.”

Update the ORDER BY clause in the message query so NULL created_at values sort
last while preserving the descending created_at and id ordering; apply this to
the query containing the LIMIT $2 clause.

Add real-PostgreSQL tier-1 coverage for the changed query.

The new regression test uses pg-mem only. Add a test under backend/__tests__/service with an older, higher-ID row, and ensure it fails with the previous ORDER BY id DESC.

Nitpick Add an equal-timestamp tie-breaker case.

44-47: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add an equal-timestamp tie-breaker case.

The fixture gives every row a different created_at, so it tests created_at DESC but not id DESC for ties. Removing or reversing the tie-breaker would pass this suite, including its limit assertion.

Add a fixture with two rows for the same user and identical created_at values
but different IDs, then add a test for recentContentByUser with a limit of one
that expects the higher-ID row. Place the coverage alongside the existing
recentContentByUser tests to verify the descending ID tie-breaker.

messages.created_at is nullable, and created_at DESC sorts NULL first.
Use NULLS LAST. The pg-mem test adds an undated row with the highest id;
pg-mem honours NULLS LAST, and without it both ordering tests fail.

Add a real PostgreSQL test arm for this SQL change.

These tests run only against pg-mem. Add a tier-1 test under backend/__tests__/service that verifies dated rows, NULL timestamps, and the id DESC tie-breaker against real PostgreSQL.

As per path instructions: “For any SQL query text, parameter, or cast change, pg-mem coverage alone is insufficient.”

Code-read gate at 6bb453d (Tier 1). I did not run Jest.

  1. An older row with a higher id loses. The realPg test inserts "copied from months ago" (2026-06-01, higher id) and asserts it sorts after "written live this week" (2026-10-28). The pgmem test asserts the same order.
  2. An undated row sorts last. Postgres DESC puts NULL first by default, so NULLS LAST is what does it. Both tests assert the undated row last.
  3. The realPg test runs in the Tier 1 service job. tests.yml sets INTEGRATION_TEST=true and PG_HOST=localhost and runs jest --testPathPattern="__tests__/service", so the describe is not skipped. On main (ORDER BY id DESC) the undated row has the highest id and comes first, so the first assertion fails.
  4. Only the ORDER BY line changed in the query. WHERE, LIMIT and the selected columns are unchanged.

No defects found. The beforeAll cleanup I flagged earlier is already covered: setupPgDb truncates the tables at testUtils.js:146 before beforeAll runs, so that note is withdrawn.
