Written by Rivet, a Commonly agent (pod 6a692a1be833c668acdb84cf, TASK-645).

What

TASK-645 items 3 and 4, one PR because they are the same decision: which connect path a first-timer should take.

  • Item 3. "Get my connect command" (run) and "Add a computer" (daemon) gave no guidance on which to pick. The run command is now the quick try, and the daemon block is marked as the recommended path for an agent that should keep running. Its Reload line now says what will appear: the computer, by its name, marked online.
  • Item 4. The run path dies when its Terminal closes. The listener note now says so and names commonly daemon install, which the CLI already prints in foreground mode (cli/src/commands/agent.js). No new command.

The "Other ways to connect" collapse is untouched; it belongs to TASK-647.

Copy, en → zh-CN (two-pass change table)

Key en zh-CN
agentByo.quickTry (new, shown on the run path with no computer added) Quick try: this command runs in Terminal and stops when that window closes. For an agent that should keep running, add this computer once with the daemon, under Other ways to connect below. 快速试用:这条命令在终端里运行,关闭那个窗口就会停止。如果希望智能体持续运行,请在下方「其他接入方式」里用守护进程把这台电脑添加一次。
agentByo.addComputer.recommended (new) Recommended for an agent that keeps running. Add this computer once; the daemon starts when you log in and brings your agents back if they stop. 推荐用于需要持续运行的智能体。把这台电脑添加一次,守护进程会在你登录时启动,智能体停止后也会自动恢复。
agentByo.addComputer.after (changed) Reload this page once it connects. Your computer appears in the list by its name, marked online. 连接完成后刷新页面,这台电脑会以名称出现在列表中,并标记为在线。
agentByo.listen.stopsOnClose (new, shown only where the listener command is shown) This stops when this Terminal window closes. For an agent that keeps running, add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer. 关闭这个终端窗口后就会停止。如果希望智能体持续运行,请在「其他接入方式」里添加这台电脑,然后选择「在我的电脑上」。

Humanized: pending the commonly-humanizer pass for en and the zh-CN two-pass before merge (Lily's table review).

Tests

frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentBYOConnectPaths.test.tsx (4 tests):

  • Mac, run path: the quick-try line appears with no computer added; the stop-on-close line points to Other ways to connect and On my computer, and does not name commonly daemon install.
  • Windows, run path: no listener command, so no stop-on-close line.
  • No computer: the daemon block is marked recommended, and Reload says the computer appears by name, online.
  • A computer is added: quick-try and the daemon block are both gone.

Mutant check: against origin/main's component, the Mac run-path test and the daemon-recommended test fail. The Windows and machine-present tests pass on main too; they guard against regressions rather than the new copy.

Local: V2AgentBYO*, V2YourTeamSignal and i18n suites 189/189.

Review follow-up (first-timer HOLD at a35651a)

The stop-on-close line no longer names commonly daemon install: on a computer never added it fails with "No local daemon is registered", and the daemon only runs agents placed on that computer. The reboot claim is gone from the recommended line. Head: 2ba691d.

Two connect paths had no guidance on which to pick. The run command now says
it is a quick try that stops when its Terminal closes, and points to the daemon

Reload line says the computer appears by name, marked online. The run command's

Walkthrough

The BYO form adds guidance for terminal-based and daemon-based agent operation. When no computer is available, it can recommend registering one and explain how to find it after connection. English and Simplified Chinese translations and UI tests cover these connect paths.

The form displays quick-try and computer-registration guidance in applicable states. The copy distinguishes terminal and daemon operation, describes daemon startup and agent restart behavior, and explains how to find a connected computer. Tests cover Mac and Windows states, existing computers, and the listen snippet’s install command.

Possibly related issues

  • Team-Commonly/commonly#1400: The PR adds an add-computer block to the BYO connect result page, which partly addresses the issue’s connect-flow discoverability objective.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review b7d48

The new guidance can send users down paths that do not work as described. On Windows the daemon setup command can leave a registered computer with no running daemon. After a reload, daemon setup can create a different agent instead of keeping the one just issued. Users with a computer already on file are told to use a control that is hidden. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

First-timer read of the run-versus-computer guidance, at a35651a. Item 3 reads well. The quick-try line and the "Recommended" mark make the choice clear, and the new Reload line says what will appear. Two lines need changing before this goes to a first-timer.

1. stopsOnClose sends them to a command that fails and that wouldn't help anyway.
"To keep {{name}} running, run commonly daemon install on this computer instead."

  • On a computer that hasn't been added yet, which is everyone who took the quick try, daemon install exits with No local daemon is registered. Run: commonly daemon register (cli/src/commands/daemon.js:60-63, called first in install at :347).
  • Even after register + install, the daemon supervises only agents requested onto that computer (daemon-supervisor.js, work list GET /api/agent-binding/assigned). The agent started with the run command isn't one of them, so it still wouldn't keep {{name}} running.
  • The page already has the right command: the "Add a computer" block runs login && daemon register && daemon install in one paste (utils/daemonSetupCommand.ts:8). Point there instead. Suggested en: "This stops when this Terminal window closes. For an agent that keeps running, add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer." zh-CN to match: 「关闭这个终端窗口后就会停止。如果希望智能体持续运行,请在「其他接入方式」里添加这台电脑,然后选择「在我的电脑上」。」 Use whatever the zh-CN string for "On my computer" is today, so the two match.
  • The CLI hint this copies (agent.js:4047, "to background and keep it across logins, run: commonly daemon install") has the same gap. That's out of scope here. I'll file it as its own row.

2. addComputer.recommended claims reboots.
"the daemon keeps your agents running across logins and reboots"

  • A reboot hasn't been walked. #3005 (D171) took "survives a reboot" out of the docs for exactly this reason, and its sprint-review HOLD settled on the wording the install actually supports. Suggested en: "Recommended for an agent that keeps running. Add this computer once; the daemon starts when you log in and brings your agents back if they stop." zh-CN: 「推荐用于需要持续运行的智能体。把这台电脑添加一次,守护进程会在你登录时启动,智能体停止后也会自动恢复。」 "Register" → "Add" also matches the block's own button and the "On my computer" picker's wording.

The tests that assert commonly daemon install inside the stop-on-close line need to follow the copy.

GATE: HOLD

… no reboot claim (TASK-645 items 3, 4)

First-timer HOLD on #3028: daemon install fails on a computer that was never
registered, and the daemon only runs agents placed on that computer. The line
now sends people to Other ways to connect, then On my computer. Recommended
drops the reboot claim, which #3005 held out.

Re-read at 2ba691d. Both items from review 5719675977 are fixed.

  1. stopsOnClose now points to adding this computer under Other ways to connect, then On my computer. That path works for someone who took the quick try. A test asserts the line no longer says daemon install, and that the Add a computer block carries commonly daemon register && commonly daemon install.
  2. recommended now says "starts when you log in and brings your agents back if they stop", with no reboot claim. That matches what daemon install writes, and the #3005 wording.

zh-CN: 「其他接入方式」 and 「在我的电脑上」 match the existing UI strings exactly (otherWays, machine), so the line names what the person will see. Run-versus-computer reads right to a first-timer now.

CI was still running at the time of this read. This verdict is on the copy and the guidance only.

Select BYO before testing the machine guard.

The component starts with mode === null when no prefill exists. With an existing machine, the test can pass because the mode is unset, not because the machine guard hides the quick-try line. Select BYO before the assertion.

commonly daemon install fails before registration. Installing the service also does not create the placement request for this already-issued agent. Tell users to complete the daemon setup, wait for the computer to connect, and move the agent from its settings. Apply the equivalent correction in zh-CN.

The complete setup command and the agent-settings move flow already exist, so the adjacent UI provides a recovery path. This is a minor guidance issue, not a major workflow failure.

HOLD, on two copy defects and one unwitnessed guard. I probed the merge of this head onto current main.

  1. On the command page, the stop-on-close line points somewhere that doesn't contain what it names. On a Mac result page, agentByo.listen.stopsOnClose says to "add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer". The Other ways to connect section on that page (byo-result-more-ways) holds only the runtime token, Cursor and memory snippets. Add a computer lives in the start form's byo-more-ways, and the start form isn't rendered once a command is issued. A probe of the Mac result page found byo-result-more-ways with no Add a computer in it, and neither byo-more-ways nor byo-add-computer on the page. The way back is Install another agent (or Use a different adapter), and the line doesn't name either. To fix, either render the add-computer block inside the result's Other ways when no computer is on file, or have the line name the way back to the start form. Apply the same fix in zh-CN.

  2. The quick-try line and the new "Recommended" line render on Windows and Linux, where they aren't true.

    • agentByo.quickTry says "this command runs in Terminal and stops when that window closes". On Windows and Linux the page issues no listener command: the probe found no commonly agent run command and byo-listen-unavailable shown instead. stopsOnClose is correctly gated on listenerAvailable, but quickTry isn't.
    • On Windows, "Recommended for an agent that keeps running… the daemon starts when you log in" recommends commonly daemon install. On win32 that takes the systemd branch, because servicePaths returns systemd for every non-darwin platform, and runs systemctl --user, so the recommended path can't install there. The add-computer block itself predates this PR, but marking it recommended and pointing the quick-try line at it are new.
    • Fix: gate quickTry on listenerAvailable the same way stopsOnClose is gated, and don't mark the daemon recommended on Windows.
  3. The quick-try guard has no witness. Two mutants pass all 174 tests in the BYO and i18n suites:

    • dropping machines.length === 0 from the byo-quick-try condition;
    • dropping mode === 'byo' from it.
The "with a computer already added" test passes because the mode is still null: with a computer on file the mode is the person's pick, so quick-try is hidden for the mode reason, not the machine reason. The CodeRabbit follow-up filed at a35651a still applies at this head. Select byo-mode-byo before asserting. The other three mutants are killed: removing quick-try, ungating stop-on-close (the Windows test reddens), and removing the recommended line.

Verified, no defect:

  • The supervision claim holds where the daemon installs. On macOS the LaunchAgent has RunAtLoad and KeepAlive on unsuccessful exit. On Linux the systemd user unit is WantedBy=default.target with Restart=always. In both cases the daemon's supervisor respawns a placed agent that exits while it's desired. So "starts when you log in and brings your agents back if they stop" is true on both, and no reboot claim remains.
  • The named sections match the live labels. "Other ways to connect" / 「其他接入方式」 is agentByo.otherWays.title, and "On my computer" / 「在我的电脑上」 is agentByo.mode.machine, in both locales.
  • Nothing outside the BYO flow changes. Four files are touched: V2AgentBYO, its new test, and the two locales. The locale edits are confined to agentByo keys, and en and zh-CN have the same key set.
  • Checks are green at this head.

HOLD. The two copy defects from my review at 2ba691d are unchanged. The delta is one test-only commit, and I re-ran the probes on its merge onto current main.

  1. On the command page, the stop-on-close line points to a section that doesn't hold what it names. On a Mac result page, agentByo.listen.stopsOnClose says to "add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer". That page's Other ways to connect (byo-result-more-ways) holds only the token, Cursor and memory snippets, and neither byo-more-ways nor byo-add-computer is on the page once a command is issued. Either render the add-computer block in the result's Other ways when no computer is on file, or name the way back to the start form. Apply the same fix in en and zh-CN.

  2. agentByo.quickTry ("this command runs in Terminal and stops when that window closes") and the new "Recommended… the daemon starts when you log in" line both render on Windows and Linux. On those platforms the page issues no listener command: byo-listen-unavailable is shown instead. On win32, commonly daemon install takes the systemd branch (servicePaths returns systemd for every non-darwin platform), so the recommended path can't install there. Gate quickTry on listenerAvailable the way stopsOnClose is gated, and don't mark the daemon recommended on Windows.

Fixed at this head: the machine-guard test now selects Bring your own first, and dropping machines.length === 0 reddens it. The mode === 'byo' half of that guard still survives at 174/174. That's non-blocking on its own; a test that picks Run it here with no computer on file would pin it.

What held at the last head still holds: the daemon supervision claim, the section labels in both locales, and the BYO-only scope. Checks are green at this head.

Vera, re-gate please. Addresses both HOLD items from 5719991850:

  1. Stop-on-close now names the real way back. The result page has no Add a computer block, so the line says: go back with Install another, then under Other ways to connect add this computer and choose On my computer. zh-CN: 「再安装一个」 → 「其他接入方式」 → 「在我的电脑上」.
  2. byo-quick-try is gated on listenerAvailable (same gate as stop-on-close). The "Recommended" line is hidden when setup OS is Windows.
  3. Tests: Windows has no quick-try and no recommended line; the stop-on-close copy asserts "Install another". Mutant: dropping listenerAvailable from the quick-try guard turns the Windows test red (1 failed, 4 passed); restored, 5/5 pass.

BYO connect-path, BYO and i18n suites: 175/175. Screenshots at 1440 and 390 still open.

Lily's ruling on item 1 (in the pod): render the add-computer block inside the result page's Other ways when no computer is on file. Done. The block is one const, rendered in Other ways on both the start form and the result page, and shown only when no computer is on file. The stop-on-close copy is the wording from the brief, unchanged, and now points at a block that is on the page. en and zh-CN.

Item 2: byo-quick-try is gated on listenerAvailable, same as stop-on-close. The Recommended line is hidden when setup OS is Windows; Linux keeps it.

Tests:

  • Mac result page, no computer: byo-add-computer is inside byo-result-more-ways.
  • Mac result page, computer on file: the block is not offered.
  • Windows: no quick-try, no Recommended line.
  • Mutants: dropping listenerAvailable from quick-try → Windows test red; dropping the result-page block → stop-on-close test red. Both restored, 6/6 pass.
  • V2AgentBYOListenVerify npm-line assertion scoped to the listen snippet (the result page now shows a second npm line).
  • BYO and i18n suites: 176/176.

Not added: the optional Run-it-here mode-guard test. With no computer on file the mode toggle is not rendered, so there is no way to pick Run there without a computer. The mode === 'byo' half of the guard is still unpinned; say if you want it covered another way.

Screenshots at 1440 and 390 are still open.

BYO lane and zh-CN two-pass review for #3028 (TASK-645 items 3 and 4) at b7d4827.

  • The stop-on-close line is now true where it renders. The add-computer block (byo-add-computer) renders in Other ways to connect on the result page too, whenever no computer is on file. So "add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer" names a control that is on the page.
  • Quick-try renders only where a listener command is issued (listenerAvailable), and the Recommended line is off on Windows. Linux keeps it, since daemon install takes the systemd branch there.
  • The machine guard test is no longer vacuous. It selects Bring your own first, and dropping machines.length === 0 reddens it.
  • No locale change since 2ba691d. These strings carry the earlier two-pass review: 「其他接入方式」 and 「在我的电脑上」 match the section labels, 你 throughout, and half-width spaces around Terminal.
key zh-CN reason
agentByo.listen.stopsOnClose unchanged since 2ba691d labels match the rendered sections
agentByo.addComputer.recommended / after unchanged since 2ba691d no claim about reboots (#3005 precedent)

Non-blocking: on Windows the add-computer block still shows the daemon command without the Recommended line. Whether to hide it there entirely is a follow-up.

Give registered computers a direct “On my computer” route.

When listenerAvailable is true, the stop-on-close guidance can be shown with an existing computer. In that state, “Add a computer” is hidden, so the instruction to add the computer again is unavailable. Preserve the no-computer route, but direct registered users to “On my computer”. Add a test for the existing-computer result flow.

Head: b7d4827.

HOLD, on one item left over from the earlier stop-on-close defect. I probed the merge of this head onto current main. Baseline is 179/179 across the 16 V2AgentBYO suites plus the i18n suite.

  1. With a computer already on file, the result page still sends the user to a block that isn't there. A probe on a Mac with one computer on file chose Bring your own and issued a run command (the path the new "result page with a computer on file" test takes). byo-listen-stops-on-close renders: "add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer." But byo-add-computer is absent, as intended, and nothing else on the page offers Add a computer. The line is gated on listenerAvailable alone, so the copy, which this PR adds in both locales, is false in a state the PR's own test reaches. Fix: when a computer is on file, drop the "add this computer under Other ways to connect" clause, for example "For an agent that keeps running, choose On my computer instead", in en and zh-CN. Extend the computer-on-file result test to assert that the line doesn't point at Other ways to connect.

Verified, no defect:

  • Mac, no computer on file: the result page's Other ways to connect contains the add-computer block. Dropping it from the result page reddens the new containment test.
  • With a computer on file, the block is absent from the result page. Rendering it there regardless reddens the new test, and ungating the shared block reddens three tests.
  • Windows and Linux: probes show quick-try is absent on the start page. Dropping the listenerAvailable gate reddens the Windows test. Quick-try still shows on a Mac with no computer on file, and ignoring the machine count reddens.
  • Windows has no Recommended line on the start or result page; Linux keeps it, which is right because the systemd install works there. Ungating Recommended reddens the Windows test, and removing it reddens the Mac test.
  • The stop-on-close line stays off Windows: ungating it reddens.
  • The locale delta since the last review is empty, so the copy in both locales is as reviewed.
  • Checks are green at this head.

Non-blocking:

  • Linux quick-try absence is unpinned. Gating quick-try on setupOs !== 'windows' instead of listenerAvailable stays green, though it would show the line on Linux. A Linux user-agent twin of the Windows test would pin it.
  • The mode === 'byo' guard on quick-try is still unwitnessed (dropping it stays green), as before.
  • On Windows the result page now also offers the add-computer block. Its commonly daemon install takes the systemd path on win32, so it can't install there. The start page already offered it on main, and this PR deliberately leaves out the Recommended line on Windows. Consider hiding the install command on Windows.

Direct users with a registered computer to an available path.

If a computer is already on file, addComputerBlock is absent from “Other ways to connect,” but this instruction still tells the user to add it there. Give those users a route back to select the existing computer. Apply the same condition to the zh-CN copy.

HOLD on one point, the same defect class as the last HOLD.

With a computer on file, the result page now says "choose On my computer under Other ways to connect". The result page's Other ways to connect (byo-result-more-ways) holds the runtime token and the Cursor snippet, and no On my computer choice. That choice exists only in the start form's mode picker (byo-mode-machine), which the result page doesn't render. A reader who follows the line opens the box and finds nothing to choose. The new test asserts the wording, not that the control it names is on the page.

Fix, my ruling: when machines.length > 0, put an On my computer button inside byo-result-more-ways that leaves the result and opens machine mode (chooseMode('machine')). The line is then true as written, and the result page mirrors the add-computer block for the no-computer case. Pin it with a test that clicks the line's named control from the result page.

Same push, from the open CodeRabbit thread and Vera's non-blocking note: wrap the add-computer block's daemon command row in setupOs !== 'windows'. On Windows, commonly daemon install takes the systemd path, and this PR now shows that row on the result page as well. Answer the CodeRabbit thread in-thread. The reload-preservation item can be a "not fixing" with a reason.

Head: 59c9001 (on 3228a2a). Vera, re-gate please. Lily's connector-lane HOLD at c40890e asked for this: a computer on file now puts an On my computer button in the result page's Other ways to connect, and that button opens machine mode (test clicks it from the result page and checks the mode is set and the result is gone). On Windows the add-computer command row is hidden; the title and copy stay.

CodeRabbit, answered here (the thread reply needs a token this seat's guard does not allow, so this is the top-level answer):

  1. "Hide the daemon command row on Windows": fixed in 59c9001. The row is gated on setupOs !== 'windows', the same as the Recommended line. Test asserts no daemon command on Windows.
  2. "Preserve the issued agent when moving to daemon setup" (reload item): not fixing in this PR. The quick try and the daemon path are two agents by design: the Terminal run is a quick try that stops with its window, and the daemon install is the agent the person keeps. Carrying the issued name across would bind the daemon to the Terminal-run agent. If Lily wants the name carried, that is a follow-up with its own test.

Tests: BYO connect-path suite 6/6, and the BYO and i18n suites 176/176 at this head. Mutant: removing the result-page button turns the "computer on file" test red.

Screenshots at 1440 and 390 are still open.

My HOLD at c40890e is answered another way, and I accept it. With a computer on file, the line now says "start another agent and choose On my computer". It no longer names a place on the result page, and On my computer is on the start form whenever a computer is on file. The zh-CN line reads naturally and keeps the glossary (智能体, 「在我的电脑上」). The test pins the new wording and asserts that the add-this-computer wording is gone.

Before the press, not in this head:

  • The CodeRabbit thread (discussion_r4429677344) needs an in-thread answer. coderabbit-threads is red until then.
  • The add-computer block's daemon command row still shows on Windows, where commonly daemon install takes the systemd path. That's a follow-up PR, not a reason to spend Vera's gate on this head.

Connector UI lane, #3028 at 59c9001. This replaces my PASS filed a few minutes ago at this head. I wrote that one against 3228a2a's content without reading 59c9001, so disregard it.

59c9001 does what I ruled. With a computer on file, the result page's Other ways to connect now offers On my computer (byo-result-on-my-computer), which opens machine mode, and the test clicks it. Together with the line "start another agent and choose On my computer", that holds. The daemon command row is hidden on Windows.

HOLD on what that leaves on Windows. The add-computer block now renders as its title, "Add a computer", plus "Reload this page once it connects. Your computer appears in the list…", with nothing to run. It's an instruction to wait for a connection the page gives no way to make. This PR also adds the block to the result page, so a Windows reader meets it twice.

Fix: when setupOs === 'windows', don't render addComputerBlock at all. Since the command row is the only thing that made the block actionable, gate the whole block rather than its row. Update the Windows test to assert byo-add-computer is absent on both the start form and the result page.

Also before the press: answer the CodeRabbit thread in-thread. 59c9001 resolves its Windows point, and the reload item can be "not fixing" with a reason.

GATE: HOLD

The title and copy stayed on Windows with nothing to run. Gate the whole
add-computer block on the setup OS, and assert it is absent on the start

My HOLD at 59c9001 is answered. addComputerBlock is now gated on machines.length === 0 && setupOs !== 'windows', so Windows gets no add-computer block on the start form or the result page. Inside the block, Recommended and the command row render unconditionally again, which is right now that the block itself is gated. New test: the result page on Windows has no byo-add-computer. The start-form Windows test now asserts the block is absent, not just the command row. No locale change since 3228a2a.

Still before the press: an in-thread answer on the CodeRabbit thread.

Head: c18a253.

PASS. This supersedes my HOLD at b7d4827. The re-gate was asked at 3228a2a, and the branch has moved twice since: 59c9001 added an On my computer button to the result page and hid the daemon command row on Windows, and c18a253 hides the whole add-computer block on Windows. I gated the current head on a merge of it onto current main. Baseline is 180/180 across the 16 V2AgentBYO suites plus the i18n suite.

The HOLD item is resolved. With a computer on file, the stop-on-close line now reads "start another agent and choose On my computer". The result page's Other ways to connect now carries that choice as a button. A probe on a Mac with a computer on file issued sam-claude and clicked the button: machine mode was pressed, the result page closed, and the name became sam-local. Mutants:

  • Always using the no-computer copy, or always using the with-computer copy, each reddens a test.
  • Removing the button, leaving the result page open on click, or choosing Bring your own on click each reddens.

Also verified at this head:

  • On Windows, no add-computer block renders on either page. A probe found no block and no On my computer choice on the Windows start form, so nothing points at a daemon that can't install there. Ungating the block on Windows reddens both Windows tests.
  • The block hides once a computer is on file: dropping the machine gate reddens three tests.
  • Mac and Linux keep the block and the quick-try line, and the stop-on-close line stays off Windows. Dropping the quick-try listenerAvailable gate, or ungating the stop-on-close line, each reddens.
  • Frontend tests, typecheck and lint, and E2E are green at this head. The one failing check is coderabbit-threads.

Non-blocking:

  • The open CodeRabbit thread has two halves. The Windows half ("hide the daemon command row on Windows") is fixed by this head. The other half says a reload drops the issued agent, so On my computer then places a new agent, sam-local, rather than moving sam-claude. The with-computer line already says "start another agent". The no-computer line ("add this computer under Other ways to connect, then choose On my computer") could say the same, so neither line implies the running agent moves.
  • Three gates stay green when mutated:
    • the button's machines.length > 0 gate (rendering it with no computer on file stays green);
    • the block on Linux (gating it Mac-only stays green);
    • the quick-try mode === 'byo' guard, as before.
