Summary

Both computer pickers labelled a computer by its name alone. A reinstall that registered a second "Sams-MacBook" left two identical options, and nothing in the UI said which was the live one.

  • Labels (TASK-650 item 1): a name shared with another of the owner's computers gets · added <date>, for example Sams-MacBook · added Oct 24 (online). A unique name is unchanged. Applied in the On my computer picker (V2AgentBYO.tsx) and the move-agent picker (V2AgentRuntimeGrants.tsx), plus the "Running on …" line that names the selected computer.
  • Default (item 2): the default pick is the first online computer. The list is already sorted by lastSeenAt desc, so this is the most recently seen online computer. Falls back to the first listed when none is online.
  • Data (item 1): GET /api/machines (MachineView.createdAt) and the placement's activeMachines (/api/agent-binding/placement) now carry createdAt.
  • Strings (item 4): agentByo.machine.addedOn in en (added {{date}}) and zh-CN (添加于 {{date}}). Both locales parse, and the i18n key tests pass.

Out of scope, as the row says: removing a computer from the web app.

Tests

  • Frontend: V2AgentBYOMachine and V2AgentRuntimeGrants, 33/33 pass. New cases: two same-named computers get distinct labels in the BYO picker; the online one is the default; a unique name has no date; a shared name in the move picker; an offline-first list still defaults to the online computer.
  • Backend: agentBinding.phase2, 42/42 pass. New case asserts the placement's activeMachines carries createdAt.
  • Mutants, restored after each run:
    • Frontend: the label always returns the bare name. 2 tests fail.
    • Frontend: the default is always the first listed. 1 test fails.
    • Backend: createdAt dropped from the placement map. 1 test fails.

Tier

Tier 1. Text and a data field only; no layout change, so no browser walk.

Walkthrough

The placement and machine-list data now include machine creation timestamps. Frontend pickers use timestamps and machine IDs to distinguish duplicate names. The BYO picker selects the first online machine, or the first machine if none are online.

Changes: Machine picker behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose machine creation timestamps
backend/services/machineService.ts, backend/routes/agentBinding.ts, backend/__tests__/unit/services/machineService.test.js, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/agentBinding.phase2.test.js
Machine serialization and the /placement response include creation timestamps. Tests verify the timestamp in machine-list data and as an ISO string in the placement response.
Disambiguate labels and select a default
frontend/src/v2/utils/machineLabel.ts, frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentBYO.tsx, frontend/src/v2/components/V2AgentRuntimeGrants.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/locales/{en,zh-CN}.json, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/machineLabel.test.ts, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentBYOMachine.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2AgentRuntimeGrants.test.tsx
Duplicate names use a localized added date when available, with an ID suffix when dates are missing or collide. Both pickers use the label helper. The BYO picker selects the first online machine, or the first machine if none are online. Tests cover label formatting and default selection.

Use the disambiguated name in placement status.

When two active computers share a name, the “Running on” and “Waiting for” lines still show only that name. The running state hides the picker, so the user cannot identify the bound computer there. Use machineDisplayName for both status lines too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Make the date assertions independent of the host time zone.

In Pacific/Honolulu, the fixture timestamps format as October 23 and September 5, so this test fails. The equivalent assertion in V2AgentRuntimeGrants.test.tsx has the same issue. Pin the test time zone or derive the expected local dates. The Jest setup does not pin a time zone. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

CodeRabbit (r4429295258): two same-named computers added on the same day got
identical labels. A shared name now carries the date and time it was added, and
two added in the same minute, or with no timestamp, fall back to the tail of
the machine ID. Adds a real-model round trip for createdAt on the list path
(CodeRabbit r4429295249).

Answers to CodeRabbit threads, fixed at db6e926:

  • discussion_r4429295258 (machineLabel.ts, same-day labels): fixed. A shared name now carries the date and time it was added. Two added in the same minute, or with no timestamp, fall back to the tail of the machine ID.
  • discussion_r4429295249 (machineService.ts, createdAt test): fixed. A real-model round trip saves a Machine, calls listMachinesForOwner, and asserts the stored createdAt. Setting createdAt to null in serializeMachine fails it.

Pin Jest's time zone for the date-label assertions.

machineDisplayName uses the runner's local time zone. The 12:00Z fixtures in machineLabel.test.ts become October 25 and September 7 in Pacific/Auckland. The 09:00Z fixtures in V2AgentBYOMachine.test.tsx and V2AgentRuntimeGrants.test.tsx become October 23 and September 5 in Pacific/Honolulu. The frontend Jest configuration and CI commands set no TZ, so these tests depend on the runner's time zone.

Pin the shared Jest setup to UTC so one change covers all three tests.

Suggested fix

Head: db6e926.

HOLD on one item. The head moved while I was gating 175a45c, so this verdict is for db6e926. I ran it on a probe merge onto main c496b8f. The merge is clean. Frontend: 18 suites pass, 192/192. Backend: 6 machine and binding suites pass, 89/89.

  1. The zh-CN date is right but nothing tests it. Through the real catalogue under zh-CN, the move picker reads "Sams-MacBook · 添加于 10月24日 2:00", "Sams-MacBook · 添加于 9月6日 2:00" and "Studio" with no suffix. The BYO picker reads the same, followed by (在线)/(离线). Hard-coding toLocaleString('en', …) still stays 192/192 green, so a zh reader getting "添加于 Oct 24, 2:00 AM" would ship unnoticed. That is the one property the ask names that no test holds. One assertion with 'zh-CN' in machineLabel.test.ts pins it.

Verified:

  • Shared names are told apart, including twins. Removing the suffix, the same-minute id tail, the no-timestamp id fallback, or the time from the stamp each turn tests red, in the helper and in both pickers. Every registration creates a fresh randomUUID machineId, so two setups in the same minute now get different 4-character tails.
  • Unique names get no suffix. Forcing the suffix on turns the helper test, the BYO unique-name test and the move-picker "Studio" case red.
  • Default pick: listMachinesForOwner sorts by lastSeenAt descending, and defaultMachine takes the first online row. Reverting to the first listed row goes red, both in the helper and at the BYO call site. With two computers online, the probe defaulted to the first, most recently seen one.
  • createdAt is now pinned on both routes. Nulling it in the serializer turns the new machineService test red, and dropping it from placement turns the phase2 test red.
  • Exposure: serializeMachine reaches only the owner's own routes. These are POST /api/machines (the registrant), GET /api/machines (owner-scoped; the leak matrix has a stranger list only its own), and /me and heartbeat (that machine's own daemon). Placement reads Machine.find({ ownerUserId: req.user.id }). Nothing new reaches another user.

Non-blocking:

  • The date assertions use the host time zone, as CodeRabbit notes at this head. The 12:00Z helper fixtures read a day later at UTC+12 and above, and the 09:00Z picker fixtures a day earlier at UTC-10 and below. CI runs in UTC.
  • The move-agent status lines (currentMachine, machineRequested) still print the bare name.
  • Using the display name in the BYO "Running on …" line is untested.

GATE: HOLD

…TASK-650)

Vera's HOLD (PR #3029 at db6e926): the date formatting was hard-coded to
English nothing tested, so toLocaleString('en') stayed green. A zh-CN assertion
now fails on an English month. The fixture is 12:00Z, which keeps the Chinese
date the same from UTC-11 to UTC+11. The component date assertions stay
zone-tolerant on purpose; pinning the zone in-file did not take effect in Jest.

machineDisplayName formats createdAt with the local timezone. The fixture renders as October 24 only through UTC+11; in UTC+12 or later it renders as October 25. Assert the localized date shape without hard-coding the day, or define and pin the timezone in the production contract and test.

Test the shipped Simplified Chinese translation resource.

This test supplies a translator that always returns 添加于, so it does not read frontend/src/i18n/locales/zh-CN.json. Removing or breaking agentByo.machine.addedOn in that resource would leave this test passing. Add an integration assertion through the actual i18n provider or a focused resource test.

As per path instructions, a changed-behavior test must fail when the behavior is removed.

Head: 9db709e.

PASS. This supersedes my HOLD at db6e926. The delta is one test-only commit, and I probed its merge onto current main.

  • The item I held on is fixed. The new zh-CN test reddens under the mutant that hard-codes 'en' in toLocaleString. All 15 label, default and placement mutants are killed, including the backend createdAt serializer and placement map. Baselines are 193/193 frontend and 89/89 backend.
  • In zh-CN the real components render Chinese dates. With the shipped resource, both pickers read Sams-MacBook · 添加于 10月24日 2:00, a unique name stays bare, and the BYO default is the online computer.

On the time-zone question: it's acceptable. CI runs in UTC, the suite is green there and in Pacific time, and a wrong zone turns these tests red, never falsely green. The window is narrower than the comment suggests, though. Measured with TZ= on the three suites:

  • green at UTC-8 and UTC-7, UTC, and UTC+8;
  • red at UTC-10 and UTC-11, where the component fixtures sit at 09:00Z and roll back a day;
  • red at UTC+13 and UTC+14, where the label tests' 12:00Z fixtures roll forward.
Moving the component fixtures to 12:00Z, or setting TZ=UTC in the environment the test script runs under, would close it. Non-blocking.

Non-blocking residuals:

  • The callers' language argument is unpinned. Replacing i18n.language with 'en' at any of the three call sites stays 193/193. language is a required parameter, so leaving it out fails typecheck; only a hard-coded literal slips through.
  • The zh-CN addedOn text is unpinned, which is CodeRabbit's second item. Deleting the key reddens the i18n parity test, but replacing it with English text stays green, because the unit test supplies its own translator.

Checks are green at this head.

BYO lane and zh-CN two-pass review for #3029 (TASK-650) at 9db709e.

  • It fixes what TASK-650 asked for. Two computers with the same name no longer read identically in the Bring-your-own picker or the move picker. Each gets "· added ", same-minute twins differ by a 4-character machine-ID tail, and a unique name stays bare. Vera's mutants cover each piece.
  • Exposure is unchanged. createdAt goes only to the owner's own machine routes. Vera traced POST/GET /api/machines, /me, heartbeat and placement, all owner-scoped.
  • The date follows the reader's language. The zh-CN picker reads Sams-MacBook · 添加于 10月24日 2:00, and a test now fails on an English date.
key en zh-CN reason
addedOn added {{date}} 添加于 {{date}} voice pass: 添加于 is the stock label form (飞书/语雀 use it), and the half-width space before the Latin/number date stays; terminology pass: no glossary term involved

Non-blocking, for a follow-up row: Vera's two residuals (callers' language argument and the zh addedOn text are unpinned), and moving the component fixtures to 12:00Z so the suite holds at UTC-10.
