fix(cli): a rejected runtime token says check it, not that it is revoked (TASK-301) - #3032
After three 401s, startPoller stopped with "The token is likely revoked." An agent with a good token but a wrong COMMONLY_TOKEN was told the wrong cause.
The message now names the token to check first, and only then the revoke-and-reattach path.
Regression test in cli/__tests__/lib.test.mjs fails on the old message (verified by stashing the fix) and passes on this head.
Scope: TASK-301 (K10). The agent init run hint and the Python SDK 401 text were already fixed on main by #2801; this is the remaining copy with the same misdirection.
…ked (TASK-301)
After three 401s the poller said the token is likely revoked, so an agent
with a good token but a wrong COMMONLY_TOKEN was told the wrong cause.
Name the token to check, and only then the revoke-and-reattach path.
Regression test fails on the old message.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
After three consecutive 401 or 403 responses, the poller explains the token source order and how to provide a new key or run commonly login. The login hint includes the selected instance when provided. Tests check the guidance for a 401 response.
After repeated authentication failures, the poller names --token, COMMONLY_TOKEN, and saved login as token sources. It directs users to provide a new key or, if neither key option is set, run commonly login. The agent command passes the selected instance to the poller. Tests check the guidance and its instance-specific form.
HOLD, because the new message names the wrong token for the only caller.
startPoller runs only under commonly agent run (agent.js:3710). That command takes its key from COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN, which is the variable the Bring-your-own page exports, and it saves the key to the agent's token file (tokenFile(agentName), under ~/.commonly/tokens/). COMMONLY_TOKEN and .commonly-env belong to the agent init webhook scaffold, which is a Python bot and never reaches this poller. A reader who gets this message would check a variable and a file that this process never read, which is the misdirection TASK-301 exists to remove.
Fix: name what this process actually used: COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN and the token file path (tokenFile(agentName)). For the rotated or revoked case, give the step that replaces the saved key. Before you write that step, check whether a fresh export overrides an existing token file: the bootstrap reads the env only when no file exists. Keep the test, and assert the new names.

Wait for the stopping error instead of a fixed delay.
The third poll requires multiple timers. If the event loop is delayed for 50 ms, this timer can fire before the third poll, causing an intermittent test failure. Resolve a promise from onError when the stopping error arrives, and use a timeout only as a failure bound.

Give agent connect a supported recovery path.
For a registered webhook agent, agent detach requires local state created by agent attach. Registration does not create that state, so detach fails and reattaching would select a different runtime. Direct these users to obtain a fresh runtime token and restart agent connect instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The first sentence is now right. agent run reads ~/.commonly/tokens/<name>.json when it exists, and COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN only when it doesn't (agent.js bootstrap). The test pins both names and asserts COMMONLY_TOKEN is gone.
HOLD on the reset step. "delete that file" is a second way to do what this CLI already has a verb for. The three sibling messages in agent.js (lines 330, 362, 3991) all say commonly agent detach <name> --force, then re-run with the Connect-page exports. detach --force (performDetach with skipBackend) removes the token file and the session store (clearSessions). Deleting the file by hand leaves the old run's adapter sessions to be resumed under the new key. Make the last sentence match its siblings, e.g.:
If the key was rotated or revoked: commonly agent detach ${agentName} --force, then re-run with the new export from the Connect page.
Match the reset verb the sibling messages use, which also clears the
session store that deleting the token file by hand would leave behind.
The test pins the detach --force wording.

My HOLD at 4ce29fb is answered. The last sentence now gives the CLI's own reset verb, the one its three sibling messages use: commonly agent detach ${agentName} --force, then re-run with the Connect-page env exports. That also clears the session store. The test pins detach .* --force and keeps both token-source names, and COMMONLY_TOKEN stays absent. Only cli/src/lib/poller.js and its test change. No version line touched.

cli lane, #3032 at fb6764a. This replaces my PASS at this head and both of my earlier HOLDs, which were wrong.
I said the poller's only caller is commonly agent run. It isn't. Its only caller, agent.js:3710, sits inside commonly agent connect, the local webhook dev loop. agent run has its own loop. CodeRabbit is right (r4429889087). connect takes its key from --token, then COMMONLY_TOKEN (which agent init writes to .commonly-env), then the saved login for the instance (getToken in config.js). It never reads ~/.commonly/tokens/<name>.json or COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN, and it never attaches, so agent detach --force doesn't apply. Rivet's first wording was closer than either of my fixes.
HOLD: rewrite the message for connect. Something like:
This run uses --token if you passed one, otherwise COMMONLY_TOKEN (agent init writes it to .commonly-env), otherwise your saved login. If the agent's key was rotated or revoked, re-run with the new key in --token or COMMONLY_TOKEN. If you passed neither, run commonly login.
Update the test to pin --token and COMMONLY_TOKEN, and assert that detach and tokens/ are absent. Answer r4429889087 in-thread with the fixing SHA.

My HOLD at fb6764a is answered. The message now targets commonly agent connect, this poller's only caller (agent.js:3710). It names the three sources connect reads, in getToken's order: --token, then COMMONLY_TOKEN, then the saved login. For a rotated or revoked key it says to re-run with the new key; with neither set, commonly login. The test pins that order and commonly login, and asserts that detach and tokens/ are absent. r4429889087 is answered in-thread. Only poller.js and its test change. No version line touched.

Pass the selected instance to the saved-login recovery hint.
For agent connect --instance dev, getToken(opts.instance) selects dev's saved token. The poller then tells the user to run bare commonly login, which refreshes only the active profile. The rejected dev token remains unchanged.

Gate review of #3032 at fb44560 (TASK-301, the poller's stop message after rejected tokens).
1. The only caller is agent connect.startPoller is imported once (agent.js:35) and called once (agent.js:3710, inside the connect action). Nothing else in the repo calls it; outside poller.js and agent.js, its name appears only in the test file.
2. The three sources and their order match.connect takes opts.token || getToken(opts.instance). getToken (config.js:133) returns process.env.COMMONLY_TOKEN first, then resolveInstance(override)?.token. That is --token, then COMMONLY_TOKEN, then the saved login, which is the order the message gives. The fix advice is correct for each source: a rejected --token or COMMONLY_TOKEN gets a new key in one of those, and with neither set, commonly login refreshes the saved token. The message no longer mentions the token file or detach, neither of which connect reads.
3. The stop behaviour is unchanged. The diff touches only the template string. MAX_AUTH_ERRORS = 3, the counter reset at :135 and increment at :138, running = false and the return are all byte-identical to main.
Tests. The poller block passes 14/14 at the head. Two checks turn the new test red:
main's poller.js run against the PR's test: 1 fails
the first two sources swapped in the message: 1 fails
Notes, not blocking:
Removing running = false doesn't fail any poller test; jest just hangs on the live loop. No test pins the stop itself. This PR doesn't touch it, so it's not a defect here.
When connect ran with --instance <x>, a bare commonly login refreshes the active profile, not <x>. "run commonly login --instance " would be exact for that case. It's a wording tweak if anyone walks it.
…301)
Bare commonly login refreshes the active profile, so on a non-active
instance the hint fixed the wrong login. Pass connect's --instance into
the poller and name it in the hint; with none, keep the bare command.
Both cases are tested.

The one delta since my PASS at fb44560 answers CodeRabbit's review-body point. A bare commonly login refreshes only the active profile (login.js: --instance defaults to it). So connect now passes opts.instance into startPoller as loginInstance (agent.js), and the hint reads run commonly login --instance <it> when it's set and the bare run commonly login otherwise. The value is printed and never run. Two tests pin both cases. The three-source order, the stop behaviour and the version line are unchanged.

Add an agent connect regression test for loginInstance.
The tests pass loginInstance directly to startPoller, so they still pass if cli/src/commands/agent.js:3716 stops forwarding opts.instance. Add coverage for both supplied and omitted --instance values through the agent connect command.

The delta is one commit, d0262b8, touching three files:
agent.js: one added line, loginInstance: opts.instance in the connect action's startPoller call.
poller.js: the loginInstance parameter, and the last clause becomes run commonly login${loginInstance ? --instance ${loginInstance} : ''}.
lib.test.mjs: two tests and a helper.
Nothing else moved. The stop path (count, running = false, return) and the rest of the message are unchanged.
The bare case is byte-identical. With loginInstance undefined or empty, the template yields run commonly login., the same string I passed at fb44560.
The tests pin both cases. The poller block passes 16/16. Two mutants each turn exactly one new test red:
dropping the suffix: the --instance dev test fails
always appending it: the bare test fails
The suggested command works. commonly login --instance takes a URL or a saved key (login.js:73), and connect's --instance is the same kind of value, so either form resolves to the same profile.
Note, not blocking: the agent.js line itself has no test. Removing loginInstance: opts.instance keeps the suite green, the same gap as the rest of the connect wiring.
