Summary

Follow-up to #3023 with the two CodeRabbit review points. Both sit in backend/scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts --apply, which SRE runs on prod once this merges.

  • Holds are case-insensitive. A community scout now holds the Scout repair, the way the rename path already rejects case-only duplicates. Holders are keyed by row id, so a repaired row is never its own holder. Keying by label alone would make a bare scout hold its own repair.
  • A PG miss still writes Mongo; a PG error aborts. A users mirror that updates no row means the bot has never posted, so it has no PG row and no PG label to disagree with. Its first post creates the row from the Mongo label (syncUserToPostgreSQL, agentMessageService.ts:1652). So the Mongo label is written, the run logs no PG users row yet; its first post copies this label, and the summary counts those rows. Skipping instead would leave a never-posted bot unrepaired on every run (Otto, ruled by Lily in Sharpen 118035). A thrown PG query still aborts before that row's Mongo write.

Test Plan

  • Backend tests pass (cd backend && npm test)
  • Frontend tests pass (cd frontend && npm test)
  • Linting passes (npm run lint)
  • Tested locally with ./dev.sh up
  • Added/updated tests for new behavior

Notes for Reviewer

  • Ran repairFirstPartyLabels.test.js and dedupeAgentDisplayNames.test.js: 32/32 on Node 22 (the CI pin) at b7f0974. eslint is clean on the script.
  • Not run: full npm test, full npm run lint, ./dev.sh up. main() was only smoke-run to its MONGO_URI guard, so SRE's dry run is the first end-to-end run of the script.
  • A 0-row PG mirror writes Mongo and logs no PG users row yet, because the bot has no PG row until its first post (Lily's ruling, Sharpen 118035). A PG error still aborts the run before that row's Mongo write.

Two review points on #3023 (CodeRabbit review body):

- takenBy was keyed by the exact label, so a community `scout` did not hold
  the Scout repair, while the rename path rejects case-only duplicates. Holds
  now compare case-folded labels. Holders are row ids, so a repaired row is
  never its own holder (a bare `scout` would otherwise hold itself).
- With PG configured, a users mirror that updates no row no longer falls
  through to the Mongo write. writeRepair stops before Mongo, the row is named,
  and the run continues; the next run plans it again.

Walkthrough

The repair script now checks label conflicts without case sensitivity and records holders by row ID. When PostgreSQL is configured, it attempts the PostgreSQL update before writing to MongoDB. A zero-row update does not prevent the MongoDB write.

The script's zero-row PostgreSQL behavior contradicts the stated PR intent. A row with no PostgreSQL match gets its Mongo label written and is counted as repaired, and later runs will not retry it. Fix this before the SRE's first apply run.

Explanation

The title names a case-folded label hold repair and the change where a PostgreSQL miss still writes to Mongo. Both match the changeset. The title does not match the PR objectives, which describe skipping the row on a PG miss without a Mongo write. The title follows the commit message, which the objectives call out as describing different behavior. The changeset summary supports the title's behavior: writeRepair writes Mongo after a zero-row PG update, and the apply loop still writes Mongo labels for those repairs.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the PR is a follow-up to #3023 with two review points for backend/scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts --apply: case-insensitive holds keyed by row ID, and handling PG misses (write Mongo, log, count) versus PG errors (abort). This matches the changeset summary (takenByLabel, writeRepair, mirrorLabel, and the added tests), so the description is clearly related to the changes.

Review at head 8403dd0 (follow-up to #3023).

Code read only. I did not run the Jest suites: my checkout has no backend/node_modules.

  1. Case-folded holds. takenByLabel keys by trimmed, lowercased label, and planLabelRepairs looks up r.to.toLowerCase(), so a community scout holds the Scout repair. The test for it is there.
  2. The repaired row never holds itself. The holder filter excludes r.id, and the others filter does too. The bare-scout test pins this.
  3. PG miss skips before the Mongo write. writeRepair returns false when mirrorLabel updates no row, and main() prints the skip and does not call writeMongo. The mutant that writes Mongo first is caught by the writeRepair tests.

Non-blocking, for the answer to Lily's question: a PG miss (rowCount 0) skips the row and the run continues. A thrown PG error, such as a dropped connection, still propagates out of main() and aborts the run. That is the safer default for an error, but it is not what "skip the row" covers, so it may be worth a line in the script header.

No defect found.

Otto, Opus gate at 8403dd0 (TASK-551 follow-up to #3023; same bar).

1. Holds are case-insensitive.
takenByLabel keys each non-blank label by its trimmed, lowercased form and holds row ids. The planner looks up r.to.toLowerCase(), never counts a row as its own holder, and still ignores per-user holders.

I ran the documented npx ts-node scripts/repair-first-party-labels.ts against a seeded in-memory Mongo, never a shared database, with PG_HOST unset:

  • A community helper on default labelled scout holds scout's "Scout (Default)" → "Scout" repair. It is skipped and printed.
  • A community digest labelled POD SUMMARIZER holds pod-summarizer's pod-summarizer → "Pod Summarizer" repair. It is also skipped.
  • A bare task-clerk default row is not held by itself, and becomes "Task Clerk".
  • A per-user scout scout still becomes "Scout".
  • pixel's "Pixel (Default)" is untouched.

The dry run wrote nothing. After --apply, no two non-per-user labels collide even case-folded. A second dry run found 0 to repair and the same 2 skipped.

2. A PG miss stops the row before its Mongo write.
writeRepair with a pool returns false and never calls the Mongo writer when mirrorLabel updates 0 rows. Without a pool it writes Mongo alone. With a hit it writes PG, then Mongo. I checked it against pg-mem with the 0001 users shape:

  • present row: PG and Mongo both written;
  • missing row: returns false, Mongo untouched;
  • null pool: Mongo written.
    main() names each stopped row and counts it apart from the written ones.

Tests and mutants. The suite passes 25/25 at head. 9 of my 10 mutants fail a test:

  • takenByLabel keeps case (4 fail);
  • planner key keeps case (5);
  • self-exclusion removed (2);
  • per-user holder filter removed (1);
  • writeRepair ignores a PG miss (1);
  • writeRepair skips Mongo without PG (1);
  • Mongo written before PG (2);
  • mirrorLabel always true (2);
  • a blank label holds (1).

The survivor compares the in-run contest by exact to instead of lowercased. It is equivalent, because a repair's to is always the exact curated label.

Input for Lily's skip-or-abort call (non-blocking): a 0-row mirror means the bot has no PG users row at all. Nothing on the create path writes one. getOrCreateAgentUser doesn't sync, and the row first appears when the agent posts (agentMessageService.ts:1736 → syncUserToPostgreSQL, which INSERTs from the Mongo label). So a bot that has never posted has no PG label to disagree with. Under this PR, every run reports it as "not written", and its Mongo label can't be repaired by this script while PG is configured. Under "abort", the first such bot would stop the whole run. A PG error already aborts the run, since the query throws. Both stores holding different labels can only come from a write that half-succeeds, and rowCount 0 isn't that. Writing Mongo on a miss would let a never-posted bot's first post carry the repaired label into PG.

Nitpick Add a test that drives the --apply loop for a zero-row PostgreSQL update.

228-232: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Add a test that drives the --apply loop for a zero-row PostgreSQL update.

The writeRepair tests show that a zero-row update returns false and skips the Mongo write. They do not cover the caller. No test in this file runs main, and the module does not export it. Reverting the loop's handling of that false result, such as removing stopped += 1, or changing the stopped note in the completion message, would leave every test passing.

Add a test that runs the apply path with a PostgreSQL pool whose users update returns rowCount: 0. It should assert three things: MongoDB is not written for that row, the run continues to the next repair, and the completion message reports the stopped count. To make this testable, expose the apply loop as a function that takes the pool, the Mongo writer, and the planned repairs. Mock only those persistence edges.

… (TASK-551)

A PG mirror that updates no row means the bot has no users row yet, so there
is no PG label to disagree with. The Mongo label is now written in that case,
and the bot's first post copies it. The run logs "no PG users row yet" for the
row and counts it in the Done line, in place of the stopped count.

A thrown PG error still aborts before that row's Mongo write. The header says
so: a re-run plans from current rows and picks up there.

Tests: a PG miss writes Mongo and returns false; a PG error throws with no
Mongo write.

Re-stamp at head b7f0974. My last gate was at 8403dd0.

Delta since 8403dd0: a 0-row PG mirror now writes Mongo and returns false. The run logs "no PG users row yet; its first post copies this label" and counts those rows separately in the Done line. A thrown PG error still propagates before any Mongo write. The PG-miss test expects the Mongo write, and a new test pins the error path. The header matches the code.

I checked the claim behind the change. The post path calls syncUserToPostgreSQL (agentMessageService.ts:1736 on this head), and that function inserts the users row when it is missing (agentIdentityService.ts:847). So a first post does copy the Mongo label.

Holds are unchanged: case-folded, and the repaired row never holds itself.

Code read only. I did not run the Jest suites, since my checkout has no backend/node_modules. Please run them before merge.

No defect found.

Otto, re-stamp at b7f0974, on my PASS at 8403dd0 (review 5720496171). The delta is one commit, fix(repair): a PG miss writes Mongo and logs; a PG error still aborts, touching only repair-first-party-labels.ts and its test.

What changed matches Lily's ruling (pod msg 118035).

  • writeRepair now computes mirrored = pool ? await mirrorLabel(...) : true, writes Mongo, and returns mirrored. A 0-row mirror writes Mongo and returns false. A thrown PG query rejects before writeMongo runs. With no pool, it writes Mongo and returns true.
  • main() logs no PG users row yet; its first post copies this label after the Mongo write, and the Done line counts every writable row as repaired, with the no-PG-row count noted apart. The dry run never calls writeRepair, so its count is unchanged.
  • The header now says a PG error aborts before that row's Mongo write and a re-run picks up from current rows, which covers Lark's ask.
  • The holder code (takenByLabel, planner key, self-exclusion, per-user filter) is byte-identical to 8403dd0.

Checks.

  • The suite passes 26/26 at head. The new error test (pool rejects, so it throws and writeMongo is never called) is the twin I'd have asked for.
  • All 12 of my mutants fail a test. That's the 6 holder mutants carried over, plus 6 on the new write path: PG miss skips Mongo again (old rule), always returns true, Mongo before PG, PG error swallowed, no pool returns false, no pool skips Mongo.
  • Against pg-mem with the 0001 users shape and the real mirrorLabel:
    • present row: PG and Mongo both get "Scout", returns true;
    • missing row: Mongo gets "Pod Welcomer", PG still has 0 rows, returns false;
    • a PG error (a unique-username clash): it throws, and the Mongo label stays at its previous value;
    • null pool: Mongo written, returns true.

CI at this head: 15 pass, 6 skipping, 7 still pending.
