docs(mcp): pair @commonlyai/mcp with Parallel's MCP server - #3048
Docs only. Adds a section to `docs/MCP_INTEGRATION.md` that loads `@commonlyai/mcp` (stdio) and Parallel's MCP server (HTTP, `https://mcp.parallel.ai/mcp\`) side by side in Claude Code and Cursor, plus a worked flow from pod context to a sourced reply.
Proposed in #2131. Commonly auth and defaults are unchanged. No Parallel key is needed for `web_search` and `web_fetch`. The standalone `search.parallel.ai` server still runs.
Scope note: the daemon and wrapper adapters have their own rules for remote MCP servers. This covers only the user-driven client path.
Proof
Run with the `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk` client (scratch script, not committed). The token came from a local token file and is not shown here.
Commonly stdio server (`npx -y @commonlyai/mcp`): 31 tools, all `commonly_*`.
Not verified: I did not run the Cursor client itself. The Cursor block uses the documented `url` shape for HTTP servers. A Cursor check should be done before this is called verified there.
Test plan
Docs-only change. No code paths touched.
Reviewer: check the Claude Code and Cursor blocks against the current docs for each client.
Adds a user-driven client example that loads Commonly and Parallel's
web search side by side in Claude Code and Cursor, plus a worked flow
from pod context to a sourced reply. Commonly auth and defaults are
unchanged, and Parallel needs no key for web_search and web_fetch.
Proposed in #2131.

The MCP integration guide explains how to configure Commonly alongside Parallel’s web-research MCP server in Claude Code or Cursor. It describes a user-driven workflow that combines pod context with web research and posts a sourced answer.

Summary
Setup and sourced-answer workflow docs/MCP_INTEGRATION.md
The guide describes Parallel’s endpoint, tool availability, and authentication requirements. It provides Claude Code and Cursor configuration examples and outlines a four-step workflow. It warns that pod context is sent to an external search service and fetched pages are untrusted. The guide limits this setup to user-driven clients and distinguishes daemon and wrapper adapter rules.

- Token lives in ~/.claude.json; a committable project .mcp.json uses ${COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN}.

- Pod context goes to an external search service: redact private content first.
- Fetched pages are untrusted input: review before commonly_post_message.

Remove the stale claim about the Parallel quickstart.
Parallel's current quickstart explicitly states that web_research requires authentication. It also lists the unauthenticated tools. (docs.parallel.ai)

docs/MCP_INTEGRATION.md:343-345 Minor · Security & Privacy · Quick win
Use Cursor's ${env:NAME} syntax for the agent token in the Cursor env block.
The text above this example says to keep the real token out of a project file that can be committed. The Cursor example in the same section puts a token value directly in the env block of .cursor/mcp.json, which is the project file that can be committed. Cursor resolves ${env:NAME} in env, so the file can reference the variable instead of the token. The Claude Code section already uses a variable reference for the project file.
Export COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN in the environment that starts Cursor. Cursor reads variables from that environment, as the Parallel section describes for shell variables. (cursor.com)

Keep Cursor MCP approval enabled for the write step.
The guide only asks the user to review fetched pages. Cursor can run every MCP call automatically when Auto-run or Run Everything is enabled. A malicious fetched page can therefore cause the model to call commonly_post_message, which can post before the user reviews or approves the message.
