Summary

commonly task gives a local seat the task board: list, create, claim, update and close, over the existing task API. CLI only (cli/). Part of TASK-669 (slice 2 of the D214 gap).

  • list --pod <id> [--status pending,claimed,done,blocked] [--mine] [--json]
  • create --pod <id> --title … [--priority P0-P3] [--assignee] [--dep] [--notes …]. Creates the row, then PATCHes the notes, because create drops them. If the notes write fails, the output names the created row, so nobody retries into a twin.
  • claim <TASK-n> --pod <id> [--continue-anyway]
  • update <TASK-n> --pod <id> [--status pending|blocked] [--assignee] [--title] [--priority] [--dep] [--note …]. --note appends to history and never replaces the row's notes. claimed and done are refused, with a pointer to claim and close.
  • close <TASK-n> --pod <id> [--pr-url …], which POSTs /complete.

Output is one line per task. --json is for agents. A failure is one plain line: the HTTP status, the server's message, and on a 409 the holder and the lease time.

Identity

The token comes from --token-file, then COMMONLY_TOKEN_FILE, then COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN. The saved login is never read, so an operator's session can't act as a seat by accident.

Tests

cli/__tests__/task.test.mjs: 26 tests against a fake API, using the response shapes and error text from backend/routes/tasksApi.ts. They cover the status words, the identity order, every verb, create-then-notes, the 409 lease and unseen-message holds, the 403 non-member line, and registration (--pod is required on each verb).

Result under Node 22: 26/26 pass, and eslint src is clean.

The full CLI suite on this branch has 3 failures in 2 suites. Both are environmental and outside this change: adapters.claude.environment.test.mjs needs bwrap, and mention-event-types.contract.test.mjs needs ts-node.

Walk

After #3089 and this CLI both merge and deploy, from a local seat with only the CLI: create a row, let a second seat claim it, retitle it, move it, and close it as the creator. The walk is TASK-669's, and its commands and outputs go on that row.

The CLI reads and writes the task board as the identity in a token file, over
the same /api/v1/tasks routes the commonly_* task tools call. Each verb does
what it says: claim takes the lease, close stamps the completion and the PR,
and update --status sets only pending or blocked, so it cannot claim or close.

Identity is --token-file, then COMMONLY_TOKEN_FILE, then COMMONLY_AGENT_TOKEN.
The saved login is never read: a write made under an operator's login lands
under that operator's name. An unknown --instance is refused rather than sent
to the default host.

The tests run against a fake API whose bodies match backend/routes/tasksApi.ts,
error text included: create then notes, a failed notes write reported as
created, lease conflicts and unseen-message holds, a non-member 403 as one line,
and the command registration.

Walkthrough

The CLI adds a commonly task command group with list, create, claim, update, and close operations. A task library handles validation, identity and API URL resolution, requests, and output formatting. Tests cover command behavior and registration.

Changes: Task CLI

Layer / File(s) Summary
Task client and validation
cli/src/lib/task.js
The task library adds input validation, token and base-URL resolution, HTTP requests, task-row formatting, and failure descriptions.
Task operations and CLI registration
cli/src/commands/task.js, cli/src/index.js
The CLI registers list, create, claim, update, and close commands. The operations support JSON or formatted output, task fields, and optional notes for create and update.
Command behavior tests
cli/__tests__/task.test.mjs
Tests cover validation, token resolution, command requests and responses, errors, and registration.

Add tests for the untested task branches.

The suite already protects create priority normalization. Add mutation-sensitive tests for:

  • resolveTaskToken: --token-file and COMMONLY_TOKEN_FILE precedence, plus unreadable and empty files refusing without environment fallback.
  • resolveTaskBaseUrl: an unknown --instance key refusing before any request.
  • runTaskCreate: --dep normalization.
  • runTaskUpdate: priority and dependency normalization, including --dep none sending dep: null.

The current resolver refuses an unknown key. The default-host behavior is only a regression consequence if that guard is removed. Also, config.js uses a fixed ~/.commonly/config.json path, so a temporary config directory is not available through the current API. Use a resolver mock or another isolated test seam instead of assuming that environment override.

checkTaskId turned TASK-001 into TASK-1, and the server pads ids to three digits (tasksApi.ts:206), so rows 1-99 returned 404 from the CLI. The test covers 1, 001, task-7 and 706.

Follow-up Comments

Nitpick Cover short dependency IDs through the create and update commands.

56-56: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Cover short dependency IDs through the create and update commands.

The command tests use 669 and TASK-669, which already have three digits, so they never exercise padding of a short ID such as 7. The --dep paths of create and update have no test at all. A change that sends dep without checkTaskId would pass the current suite.

Add a fake-API case for a short dependency. The create case looks like this, and update should get the same case through fields.dep:

Test for a padded short dependency on create
   test('without --notes it is one request', async () => {
     const api = fakeApi(() => ({ status: 201, json: { task: row({ taskId: 'TASK-691' }) } }));
     const out = sink();
     await runTaskCreate({ pod: POD, title: 'Plain row' }, depsFor(api.fetchImpl, out));

     expect(api.calls).toHaveLength(1);
     expect(api.calls[0].body).toEqual({ title: 'Plain row' });
   });
+
+  test('a short --dep is sent as the padded row id', async () => {
+    const api = fakeApi(() => ({ status: 201, json: { task: row({ taskId: 'TASK-692' }) } }));
+    await runTaskCreate({ pod: POD, title: 'Waits', dep: '7' }, depsFor(api.fetchImpl, sink()));
+
+    expect(api.calls[0].body).toEqual({ title: 'Waits', dep: 'TASK-007' });
+  });

Keep the checkTaskId unit tests. They test the helper directly, but they do not cover the command wiring. Also add one claim or close case with a short ID, such as 7, to check padding at the command boundary.

Add fake-API command tests that verify short dependency IDs are normalized to
padded row IDs: cover `runTaskCreate` with `dep` set to `7` and `runTaskUpdate`
with `fields.dep` set to `7`. Also add a `claim` or `close` command test using
short ID `7` to verify padding at the command boundary; retain the existing
`checkTaskId` unit tests.

Self-review at d2697b3, as Lily asked. The diff is two files under cli/.

The change: checkTaskId now pads the number to three digits, so TASK-1 and TASK-001 both become TASK-001. The server stores ids padded (backend/routes/tasksApi.ts:206), so the CLI has to send the padded form.

What I checked:

  • The new return line matches the server's rule. Ids past 999 come out the same on both sides: 1234 stays TASK-1234.
  • Every checkTaskId caller in cli/src/commands/task.js uses the returned value: create's --dep, claim, update (including its --dep) and close. Nothing else builds a TASK- id by hand.
  • The four new cases (1, 001, task-7, 706) and the existing 669 cases pass. The task suite is 30/30 under Node 22.23.1, and eslint is clean on src/lib/task.js.
  • CI on this head is green, including the CLI job. CodeRabbit's thread on cli/src/lib/task.js:81 is answered.

Locally, the one failing suite is adapters.claude.environment. It fails with or without this change, and it isn't part of this PR.
