Written by Forge, a Commonly agent. Row: TASK-729 (rescoped; SRE answers applied).

What

  • Prod (api.commonly.me) never signs up. It signs in to the account in COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL with COMMONLY_WALK_PASSWORD (env only), mode signin-prod, account never deleted, six covered steps.
  • Prod without COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL is refused before any request.
  • Non-prod, no email: signup as before. Staging shared account unchanged (staging host only).
  • Runbook updated.

Not done here

  • No prod run. SRE runs the prod walk after each deploy.

Tests

  • node --test scripts/first-user-walk-mode.test.mjs scripts/first-user-walk.test.mjs scripts/first-user-walk-cleanup.test.mjs: 45 pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Prod has no signup for the walk. With COMMONLY_WALK_PROD_EMAIL set, a run on
api.commonly.me signs in to that existing account, runs the six covered
steps, removes only what it created and never deletes the account. Without
it, a prod run is refused before any request. Signup stays on non-prod
targets with no account given. The staging shared account is still refused
on prod.

The prod variable names are provisional until SRE confirms them.

Tests: prod sign-in path (no register, no account delete, six steps), prod
refusal without an account, and the mode rules. 19 walk tests pass.

Walkthrough

The first-user walk now supports production sign-in with an existing test account. Production runs require an account email and password, skip signup and account deletion, and clean up resources created by the run.

Changes: Production walk mode

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select production sign-in mode
scripts/first-user-walk-mode.mjs, scripts/first-user-walk-mode.test.mjs
Production URLs require HTTPS and an account email. Production runs use signin-prod and do not delete the account. Tests cover production mode selection, missing-email rejection, and staging signup.
Run and document production sign-in
scripts/first-user-walk.mjs, scripts/first-user-walk.test.mjs, docs/runbooks/first-user-walk.md
runWalk selects the mode before checking the password and uses the mode email when present. The usage text and runbook describe production credentials, covered steps, and cleanup. Tests cover production sign-in and refusal before backend requests when the email is missing or the URL uses HTTP.

…SSWORD

SRE's answer: no prod test account exists yet, and the walk reads its
account from env only, under the same names as staging. Prod now takes
COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL and signs in to it: no signup, account never deleted,
six steps. Without the email a prod run is refused before any request. The
PROD-prefixed names are gone. The staging shared-account rule is unchanged
for every non-prod host.

Exercise the missing-password guard.

Assert the production login email.

fakeBackend checks the password but ignores the login email. This test would still pass if runWalk sent its generated @example.invalid address instead of COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL. Make the fake validate the seeded email or assert the login request body. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clarify the agent cleanup.

The walk stops the hosted runtime and removes the seat, but the agent’s User remains for SRE to purge from the manifest. The statement that the run removes the agent can cause operators to miss that purge. Update the cleanup section at Lines 72–83 as well; it incorrectly describes account deletion for every run. CodeRabbit (major): with --base http://api.commonly.me and no
COMMONLY_WALK_EMAIL, the mode fell through to signup, which sends the
password in cleartext. Prod over non-https is now refused first. The
missing-password test now supplies the prod email, so it reaches the
password guard and asserts zero requests.

Normalize the production hostname before checking it.

http://api.commonly.me. names the same DNS host, but its hostname retains the trailing dot. This check misses it, so a run without an email selects signup and sends COMMONLY_WALK_PASSWORD over HTTP.

Normalize the hostname for both the transport guard and production mode selection. Add a test for the trailing-dot URL.

Based on learnings, production network communication must use HTTPS.

…fix the runbook

Opus-class gate follow-ups on #3159. A trailing dot on the prod host
(https://api.commonly.me.) slipped past the exact-host check and fell to
signup, so the host is normalised before the checks. The prod sign-in test
now asserts the login email and that it stays out of the result and manifest.
The runbook no longer describes prod as signup-and-delete.

GATE review at 4699d25 (Opus-class subagent review of af15aff; follow-ups applied in this head).

Findings from that review, all addressed in this head:

  • trailing-dot prod host (https://api.commonly.me.) was not refused: host now normalised, with a test
  • prod sign-in test now asserts the login email and that it stays out of result and manifest
  • runbook updated: prod is signin-prod, not signup-and-delete

Tests: node --test over mode, walk and cleanup suites, 47 pass. No prod run made; SRE runs the prod walk after deploy.
