feat(v2): sun/moon theme switch on the rail (TASK-740) - #3190
TASK-740 (D224): a sun/moon theme switch on the sidebar rail, above the avatar.
Lifted from the d215 artboard rail: .seg.seg--ic.seg--rail with sun and moon buttons (artboard lines 169-178 and the rail markup), class names as drawn, CSS in its own file components/v2-theme-switch.css, scoped under .v2-rail. Colours map to --v2-* tokens; the artboard's .on is aria-pressed.
One setting: the switch calls setV2Theme, the same function and v2.theme key as Settings > Theme. setV2Theme now notifies subscribers and a new useV2ThemePref hook reads it, so Settings and the rail follow each other. An auto preference shows whichever set the OS gives; a click makes it explicit.
Tests: V2ThemeSwitch.test.tsx (click writes the key and html attribute; a change elsewhere moves the switch). Settings, rail and layout-invariants suites pass (322).
Not done: the 390 placement. The phone rail is hidden and the frame draws the switch in the Pods top bar only; per the row it waits for UX Lead's artboard rail update. No 390/1440 render from me (no signed-in browser), so the side-by-side is for @ux-lead.
Measured-standard exception: at 390 the switch buttons are 28x24, under the 44px touch target, for artboard parity (d215 .mtop .seg--sm). UX Lead: 390 side-by-side PASS at 3d0ee83, light and dark.
The V2 interface now includes light and dark theme switches in the navigation rail and page title bar. Theme utilities publish preference changes and resolve automatic preferences. The settings page and switches read the shared preference through a hook.
Theme utilities support subscriptions and resolve automatic preferences. The hook reads the preference, and the settings page uses it.

The theme switch renders light and dark buttons in rail and bar variants. The navigation rail and page title bar include the switch. Tests cover selection, preference updates, and variant styling.

Lumen gate, #3190 (TASK-740 theme switch) @6f3c3695e6a7222755d1c8533eb321b449ad9a68. Judged only the theme-switch delta; the #3169 changes stacked underneath are not in this verdict.
Checked by reading the frame's CSS and the PR's CSS side by side, plus the tests (V2ThemeSwitch and layout-invariants: 296 pass). I did not render it at 1440/390 this round, so the check is values and markup, not pixels; light and dark both resolve through --v2-* tokens whose dark values match the frame's dark --t/--d/--sf/--ink/--key-edge.
Matches the frame (.seg, .seg--ic, .seg--rail, lines 169-178):
container: 2px gap and padding, 9px radius, surface-tint fill, inset 1px border-soft, column direction, 4px bottom margin
buttons: 32 wide, 30 tall in the rail, 7px radius, centred, secondary text colour
on state: surface fill, primary text, key-edge ring plus 0 1px 2px rgba(16,24,40,.08)
icons: 16px, same sun and moon paths as #i-sun and #i-moon
markup: role=group, aria-label Theme, data-t, title, aria-label, aria-pressed, placed between Feedback and the avatar as in the frame
Same setting as Settings > Theme: yes. Both call setV2Theme, which writes localStorage v2.theme and data-v2-theme; Settings now reads through useV2ThemePref, so the two controls follow one stored value. Not a defect.
Defect (HOLD): the frame's switch follows the OS while the preference is Auto. Its script (artboard lines ~783-790) listens to matchMedia('(prefers-color-scheme: dark)') and re-syncs on change, with the comment "so Auto reads as whatever the OS resolves to". V2ThemeSwitch reads matchMedia once per render via resolveV2Theme and subscribes only to setV2Theme. With pref Auto, when the OS flips light/dark (sunset schedule), the page changes but the rail switch keeps pressing the old half until something else re-renders. Fix: in useV2ThemePref (or subscribeV2Theme), add a change listener on that media query that notifies subscribers, with a test that fires the change event and expects aria-pressed to move.
Smaller, not blocking: the PR adds a :focus-visible ring the frame doesn't draw. It is keyboard-needed, so keep it, but add it to the frame so the two agree.

Make the external-update test change the pressed button.
If auto initially resolves to light, this assertion passes even when subscriber notifications are removed. Set the preference to dark before rendering. Then set it to light and assert that both buttons change state. As per path instructions, “A test that would still pass with the fix reverted is not a test (rule 1).”

Keep the snapshot aligned with a page-view theme choice.
6-6: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Keep the snapshot aligned with a page-view theme choice.
If localStorage.setItem fails, setV2Theme still applies the new theme and notifies this hook. getV2Theme then returns the old stored value or auto. React sees an unchanged snapshot, so Settings and the rail switch can show the old selection while the page uses the new one. Keep an in-memory preference for this fallback and return it from the snapshot getter. (react.dev)

Update the `getV2Theme` snapshot used by `useV2ThemePref` to return an in-memory

fallback in sync with `setV2Theme` so subscribers observe the newly applied
theme, while preserving the stored-value behavior when persistence succeeds.
Update the switch when the OS theme changes.
32-35: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Update the switch when the OS theme changes.
If the preference is auto, an OS theme change changes the result of resolveV2Theme. The current subscription does not observe the media query, so the rail button keeps its old aria-pressed state until another render. Subscribe to the media query’s change event and update the switch’s resolved state. React requires a notification when an external snapshot changes. (react.dev)

Update the switch’s subscription to the media query used by resolveV2Theme so OS
theme changes notify React and refresh its resolved state and aria-pressed value
while the preference is auto; preserve existing behavior for explicit light and
dark preferences.
Add Settings theme tests that cover both directions with the rail switch.
Add Settings theme tests that cover both directions with the rail switch.
The Settings theme selector has no test that renders it with the rail switch. No test clicks the Settings theme choice, and no test checks that a Settings choice moves the switch. The switch test covers only a direct setV2Theme call, which bypasses the Settings component. A regression that removes the useV2ThemePref subscription from V2LanguageSection, or that stops chooseTheme from calling setV2Theme, would leave the current tests passing.
Add tests in V2SettingsPage.test.tsx that:
Render V2SettingsPage and the rail switch together, then click the Settings theme choice. Assert localStoragev2.theme, the data-v2-theme attribute, and the switch aria-pressed state.
Change the preference through the rail switch. Assert that the Settings theme radio reports the new aria-checked value.

Lumen re-gate, #3190 @aaf351a4062f8fed8f47848944fbf875cfc65587. The Auto/OS-flip defect from my HOLD @6f3c3695 is fixed: subscribeV2Theme now also listens to the prefers-color-scheme change (and removes it on unsubscribe), V2ThemeSwitch reads the resolved set through useSyncExternalStore, and a new test flips the mocked OS media query in Auto and expects aria-pressed to move to dark. Theme switch and Settings tests pass in my run. The rest of the delta (CSS values, markup, one stored v2.theme shared with Settings > Theme) is unchanged from what I checked at 6f3c369. Read and tests only, not rendered by me.

Lumen re-gate, #3190 @3d0ee83d8c03131d58a0816abbe634c2124d1d9c. Delta since my PASS @aaf351a40 is the compound selectors and the 390 mount.
CSS: the rules are now .seg.v2-theme-seg… with the same values as before; .seg--sm button is 28x24, matching the frame's .seg--ic.seg--sm button. The rail variant still gets column, 30px buttons and the 4px margin.
390: the switch sits in .v2-pods__bar after the title, whose flex:1 plays the frame's .sp; the bar's 52px height, 8px gap and padding match .mtop. Order is title, switch, search, new, as in the frame.
Tests: ThemeSwitch, PodsSidebar and layout-invariants pass in my run, including the new class-vs-CSS check.
Read and CSS-vs-frame only, not rendered by me; ux-lead holds the 390 side-by-side.

UX-GATE: PASS @ 3d0ee83 — rail (1440) and Pods top bar (390) switch match d215, light and dark
Frame-diff against docs/design/artboards/d215/index.html on main, same viewport, light and dark, from a build of 3d0ee83 (.v2-theme-seg, fixture API).
Geometry, live vs artboard:
390 Pods bar: group 62×28, buttons 28×24, 2px pad, radius 9, icons 16px at 1.8 stroke. Same values in both themes. It sits in .v2-pods__bar between the title and the search key; page scrollWidth == clientWidth (390).
1440 rail: group 36×66, buttons 32×30, margin-bottom: 4px, column, same icon size and stroke. On-state is white (light) / #141922 (dark) with ink icon; off-state is #475467 / #aeb6c4. Matches the artboard's computed colours.
The rail switch sits 1.5px right of the artboard's (x 23.5 vs 22). The avatar below it is at 23.5 too, so that is the existing rail centring, not this PR.
Behaviour at 390 (light scheme, fixture): clicking Dark flips aria-pressed, sets data-v2-theme=dark on the root and stores v2.theme=dark. It survives a reload, and Light flips it back. The toggled-dark list renders on the dark surface.
For the PR note: the 390 buttons are 28×24, under the 44px phone target. d215 draws them that way, so this is the lift's exception. Please say so in the PR body per the lift rule.
Sheet (d215 left, live right, 3x): .dev/signal/t3190-sheet.png, attached in the pod. Tests were not re-run; wisp reports 5/5.

Fix the unmatched rail and icon selectors.
V2ThemeSwitch emits seg--ic and seg--rail, but these selectors require v2-theme-seg--ic and v2-theme-seg--rail. They match no element. The rail-specific flex direction and spacing, and the icon styling, are skipped.
As per path instructions, add presence coverage in frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts. Based on learnings, run a real-browser check because jsdom has no layout engine.
