fix(cli): stop a test's real MCP warm, and let the temp guard see every leftover - #3223
The Verify CLI test temp cleanup step dequeued #3207 twice and #3210 once (runs 41297690097, 41298408550, 41298970341). Each time it failed with ENOTEMPTY on the guard's own final rm of its probe root, at a path like cli-claude-mcp-home-*/.tmp-0.3.26-*/node_modules/ajv/....
Why
One test, "a seat that does not run the shipped Commonly MCP is not witnessed" in the TASK-256 witness block, started a real background MCP warm. It declares a hand-run MCP copy, so the spawn resolves no version, and warmLooksWanted always says yes when there is no version. The fresh .registry.json the block writes doesn't help in that case. The warm is a detached npm install @commonlyai/mcp from the real registry. It outlived the suite, refilled the test's home after afterEach removed it, and raced the guard's rm.
The guard never reported the leak itself. It counted a fixed list of prefixes, and cli-claude-mcp-home- wasn't on it. Neither was any other cli-claude-* directory this file creates.
Change
Test: the witness block's beforeEach writes .warm.lock into its home. That's the pattern another test in the file already uses to hold off a warm.
Guard (cli/scripts/verify-temp-cleanup.mjs):
It counts everything left in the probe root except Jest's and Node's own caches (jest_*, node-compile-cache).
It waits 1.5 s before reading the root, so a detached child shows itself.
Its final rm retries. If it still fails, the run fails and names what was left in the probe root (CodeRabbit's point, answered in its thread). It sets exitCode rather than throwing, so a leak check's own error stays the one reported.
Proof
Probe:kickWarm was instrumented to log every real spawn, then restored. On main the suite makes one real warm, from this test. With the change it makes none.
Reverse check, with the new guard:
Old test: pass 1 fails with CLI test temp directories survived pass 1: cli-claude-mcp-home-mIwHbl (17 MB), a named leak instead of ENOTEMPTY.
Fixed test: both passes report 0 dirs / 0 bytes, and the probe root is removed.
Local run: the four guarded files give 251 passed and 2 skipped, under macOS, excluding the one bwrap test that fails only on macOS ("runs in bwrap with a HOME outside the project"). This PR's CI runs the guard on Linux.
…ry leftover
The CLI temp-cleanup guard has dequeued #3207 twice and #3210 once with
ENOTEMPTY on its own final rm. The cause is one test in the TASK-256
witness block: "a seat that does not run the shipped Commonly MCP is not
witnessed" declares a hand-run MCP copy, so the spawn resolves no version,
and a spawn with no version always wants a warm. The fresh registry answer
the block writes doesn't stop that. The warm is a detached npm install of
@commonlyai/mcp from the real registry. It outlived the suite, refilled the
test's home after afterEach removed it (17-29 MB), and raced the guard's rm.
The guard never saw the leak itself, because it counted a fixed list of
prefixes and `cli-claude-mcp-home-` wasn't on it (nor any `cli-claude-*`).
- The witness block now holds a warm lock in its home, the pattern another
test already uses. Probe (kickWarm instrumented to log real spawns): one
real warm on main, none with this change.
- The guard counts everything left in the probe root except Jest's and
Node's own caches, after a 1.5 s settle so a detached child shows itself.
Its final rm retries, and a cleanup that still fails after both leak
checks passed is a ::warning, not a red queue run.
Reverse check: the old test under the new guard fails pass 1 naming
cli-claude-mcp-home-mIwHbl (17 MB) instead of ENOTEMPTY; the fixed test
passes both passes with 0 dirs and the probe root removed.

The test fixture adds a .warm.lock alongside its registry version entry. The temporary-cleanup verifier checks probe-root contents except Jest and Node caches, waits before checking for leftovers, and retries final root removal.
Changes: MCP Temporary-Home Cleanup

Summary
Warm-lock test fixture cli/__tests__/adapters.claude.environment.test.mjs
The fixture retains the registry version entry and adds a .warm.lock. Its comment describes cases where a registry answer does not prevent a background warm.
Probe-root detection and cleanup cli/scripts/verify-temp-cleanup.mjs
The verifier excludes Jest and Node cache names instead of checking only known prefixes. It waits 1,500 ms before checking for leftovers and retries final root removal up to five times, with 200 ms delays. If removal still fails, it logs the remaining entries and sets process.exitCode to 1.
The cleanup behavior is fixed, but its failure path remains untested and could regress unnoticed.

One review round (D218): a fresh subagent review at this head.
The lock stops every real warm in the witness block.prepareMcpSpawn warms only when !lockPresent && warmLooksWanted (cli/src/lib/mcp-home.js:595-597). The hand-run command resolves version: null (:452), so warmLooksWanted is true (:511), and the lock is the only gate left. None of the block's 13 tests asserts a warm, so none passes vacuously.
No other test in the four guarded files reaches the real kickWarm. Every other home already writes .warm.lock, and no adapter injects spawnImpl into prepareMcpSpawn.
Linux false-red risk is low. Jest's cache is jest_*, every tmpdir() write in src goes through a tracked mkdtemp, and the Linux-only bwrap arm uses a fake spawn.
Accepted residual: a pass-2 child that starts writing more than 1.5 s after Jest exits now surfaces as a ::warning rather than red. The cause is removed at the test, and the rm was never the leak assertion.
Probe: 1 real warm on main, 0 here. Reverse check: the old test under the new guard fails pass 1, naming cli-claude-mcp-home-mIwHbl.
SRE sanity-checked the guard's retry and snapshot logic: no blocker.

Add a positive-control test for verify-temp-cleanup.mjs.
jest-home-cleanup.test.mjs runs its fixture directly and does not invoke this verifier. Add an integration test that leaves a cli-claude-mcp-home-* directory, asserts a nonzero exit and the directory name, and confirms that tool-cache entries alone pass. Reverting the filter must make the positive-control test fail.

Assert that the warm lock blocks the detached warm in the hand-run test.
The .warm.lock write in beforeEach matters only for the hand-run test at lines 1934-1938. That test runs a copy outside the published package, and the test comment states that this copy resolves no version. With no lock, warmLooksWanted returns true, and kickWarm can start a detached child that refills the home. The test checks only the returned text, so it still passes after the lock is removed.
Add a spawn spy and assert that the hand-run turn does not start a warm. The spy must cover node:child_process, because mcp-home.js imports spawn from that specifier. claude.js does not forward _spawnImpl to prepareMcpSpawn, so the module mock is the only interception point.
test('a seat that does not run the shipped Commonly MCP is not witnessed', async () => {
// A hand-run copy, as the staging seats run: not the published package.
const mcp = [{ name: 'commonly', transport: 'stdio', command: ['node', '/opt/commonly-mcp-staging/src/index.js'] }];
await expect(turn(stream(init('failed'), result('HELLO')), { mcp })).resolves.toMatchObject({ text: 'HELLO' });
+ expect(spawnMock).not.toHaveBeenCalled();
});
Call spawnMock.mockClear() in beforeEach so that calls from other tests do not leak into this assertion. Register both mocks before mcp-home.js is first loaded, or the mock will not apply.

Update the hand-run test, “a seat that does not run the shipped Commonly MCP is

node:child_process as well as child_process before mcp-home.js is loaded, and
clear the spawn spy in beforeEach so calls from other tests do not affect the

CodeRabbit (Major), and the residual both the review and SRE named: the
warning-only catch let a run go green while something a test started was
still writing into TMPDIR after the last snapshot. That's the leak the
guard exists to catch, and the cause is now fixed at the test, so a
recurrence should be loud.
The final rm keeps its retries; if it still fails, the run sets exitCode 1
and names what was left in the root (with a hint for ENOTEMPTY). exitCode,
not a throw, so a leak check's own error stays the reported one.
Exercised with a scratch test leaving a read-only dir: exit 1, the leak
check's "survived pass 1: locked" error, and the rm line naming `locked`.
The four guarded files still pass both passes with 0 dirs.

verify-temp-cleanup.mjs now relies on process.exitCode = 1 when final removal fails. The changed Claude test only creates .warm.lock; it does not invoke the cleanup guard or assert its exit status. Add a test that passes both snapshots, forces final removal to fail, and asserts a nonzero exit. Reverting this assignment must make the test fail.
