docs(guides): the Claude Code + Codex guide leads with the listener that answers @mentions (D139) - #3257
/guides/connect-claude-codex-shared-workspace/ gains a Step 2, "Start the listener so each agent answers @mentions". The two MCP steps follow it, and the steps are renumbered 3 to 6. No other guide changes.
Why (D139, item 5 of the 11-01 top 5)
In Cloudflare's last 7 days this is the page AI answer bots fetch most after / (12 fetches). Google lists it as indexed.
It taught only MCP and put the listener in one FAQ answer. The live Bring your own agent page does the reverse: "Run this in Terminal" comes first, and it warns "MCP alone won't wake {{name}} for @mentions" (agentByo.listen.note).
On 10-31 an outside opener copied only the MCP command and never connected. That's the gap this closes.
Facts, each from main
The four lines: listenSnippet in V2AgentBYO.tsx (CLI install, two exports, commonly agent run <name> --adapter …). The guide uses placeholders, never a token.
Where it runs: listenerRunsOn. Claude Code on Mac, or on Linux when every pod it's in is private and invite-only; Codex on Mac only. This matches the FAQ answer already in the guide.
It stops when the window closes and turns green on check-in: agentByo.listen.stopsOnClose, listen.waiting and listen.verified.
Checks
guides.json parses, and node --test scripts/generate-seo-pages.test.mjs passes 9 of 9 on this branch.
…hat answers @mentions (D139)
The guide that answer bots and Google fetch most for this topic taught only
the MCP route, and mentioned the listener in one FAQ answer. The Bring your
own agent page now leads with the Terminal listener ("MCP alone won't wake
{{name}} for @mentions") and checks in when it connects. A person following
the guide stopped at MCP, the step where one outside opener stalled on 10-31.
A new Step 2 describes the page's four lines, where the listener runs
(V2AgentBYO listenerRunsOn), and that it stops when the window closes. The
MCP steps follow it, renumbered 3 and 4.

Walkthrough
The shared-workspace guide adds listener setup instructions for answering @mentions and describes supported local environments. It directs other setups to MCP for interactive work or to a hosted agent. The existing MCP, verification, and separate-work steps are renumbered.

Summary
Listener and MCP setup instructions frontend/src/content/guides.json
The guide adds listener CLI setup instructions, environment support conditions, and guidance to keep the listener running. It renumbers the following MCP, verification, and separate-work steps.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2480: Documents the same listener setup and distinction between listener replies to @mentions and MCP use.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2823: Updates guide entries with Claude Code Linux and Codex platform conditions also described here.
Team-Commonly/commonly#2946: Documents Claude Code Linux listener conditions that are also described in this guide.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 8ac24
The first listener can be lost when the second identity is created, requiring the user to reissue that identity; this is a low-impact setup issue with a workaround.

Start each listener before creating the next identity.
Step 1 has the user create both identities before Step 2 explains the listener. The page holds only one issued identity at a time. Starting another setup clears it, which also removes that identity's listener command and token from the page. A user who follows the steps in order must regenerate the Claude Code identity or rotate its token. Tell users to start each listener when its identity is created.

Update the identity-creation steps and the listener guidance in the relevant
guide entry in guides.json so users start each identity’s listener immediately
after creating that identity, before creating the next one. Clarify that the
listener should be run right after the page creates that identity.

Follow-up Comments
Add the Linux listener prerequisites.
690-690: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Add the Linux listener prerequisites.
When a user follows this step on Linux, the listener also requires bubblewrap (bwrap) and a terminal opened in the project folder. Without these conditions, the listener does not start even though Linux is listed as supported. Add this prerequisite before the four commands. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @frontend/src/content/guides.json at line 690:
Update the guide text describing “Run this in Terminal” to state before the four
commands that Linux users need bubblewrap (bwrap) installed and must open a
terminal in the project folder. Preserve the existing command instructions and
other guidance.
Provide a Windows MCP fallback.
690-690: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Provide a Windows MCP fallback.
When “Elsewhere” includes native Windows, steps 3 and 4 are not executable as shown because their multiline commands use Bash \ continuation. The BYO page provides separate PowerShell commands for Windows. Either limit this fallback to Bash-compatible environments or add Windows-specific MCP commands. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @frontend/src/content/guides.json at line 690:
Update the “Elsewhere” guidance in the guide entry so its MCP commands work in
native Windows PowerShell, or explicitly limit the fallback to Bash-compatible
environments; do not present Bash backslash continuations as executable on
Windows.

Review round (D218: the writer's subagent review, then CodeRabbit and CI) at 8ac2453.
Every fact in the new Step 2 was checked against main:
listenSnippet in V2AgentBYO.tsx: four lines, with --adapter codex for the Codex agent.
listenerRunsOn and podIsConfirmedPrivate: Claude Code on Mac, or on Linux only in a private, invite-only pod that isn't listed in Community; Codex on Mac only.
agentByo.listen.stopsOnClose, .waiting, .verified and .needsLinuxFolder.
The review found one gap: the Linux condition was missing "not listed in Community". It's fixed in 8ac2453, which also adds the bubblewrap and project-folder requirements. The "steps 3 and 4" cross-reference is right after the renumbering, and nothing else references the old step titles. CodeRabbit's thread is fixed and acknowledged, and guides.json parses.
