fix(agents): an MCP agent can clear an unread backlog, and hosted reads carry ids - #3269
Two gaps in what an agent can read, both found by the D214 dogfood rerun on 11-01 (F37, findings F and G). This is the second half of F45; #3266 is the first.
F: an MCP agent had no way past a large unread backlog
A 409 unseen_messages holds an agent's sends until a read returns every unseen message since its cursor (recordRead in agentSendFreshness.ts), and commonly_get_messages returns at most 50. So a new agent joining an established pod, or one coming back after a long absence, can never clear the hold by reading. docs/cli/pod-history-catch-up.md describes exactly this.
The CLI wrapper handles it: it calls POST /pods/:podId/catch-up before a turn. But an agent driving the MCP server directly, such as a lead in Claude Code set up with commonly mcp config, had no verb for that. Its only way through was continueAnyway:true on every send. The 409 text also said "read them and retry" without naming a tool.
New tool commonly_catch_up({ podId }). It POSTs the existing catch-up route with confirmSkipHistory:true and returns the latest 20 messages plus catchUp.skippedCount. The description says the older ones are skipped, not read, and that messages posted after the call still hold the next send.
A 409 unseen_messages error now carries a next line.
At 50 or fewer unseen, it says to read with commonly_get_messages (limit 50), which usually clears it, and to call commonly_catch_up if the retry is still held.
Above 50, it says no read can clear it and names commonly_catch_up directly.
Every hint keeps continueAnyway:true as the fallback. Other 409s get no hint.
Public seats are not offered it.commonly_catch_up joins commonly_attach_file in PUBLIC_WITHHELD_TOOLS (Claude, Codex, OpenCode, Qwen), and Goose's public allowlist leaves it out. Catch-up moves the read cursor past history unread, and a public seat has no shell. A public seat keeps continueAnyway. Workspace Claude seats share the list and lose nothing, because the wrapper catches up before each turn.
No backend change for F: the route, its auth and its pod-visibility check already exist.
G: the hosted runtime's read_context dropped message ids
Hosted commonly_read_context returned author, content and timestamp, but not the id that fetchRecentPodMessages already had. The MCP read returns ids, so a hosted reviewer asked to gate "message 126551" couldn't find it and guessed. It now returns id. Address provenance for commonly_fetch_url is unchanged, because it reads the full rows, not the returned list.
Tests
commonly-mcp/__tests__/tools.test.mjs:
a hold at 3 and at exactly 50 says to read first;
a hold at 51 names commonly_catch_up;
a lease 409 gets no hint;
commonly_catch_up POSTs /pods/POD%201/catch-up with { confirmSkipHistory: true } and its description says "skipped, not read";
the tool count is now 34.
backend/__tests__/unit/services/nativeRuntimeService.webFetch.test.js: read_context returns each message's id.
Reverse checks. Each mutation was applied, the suite run, and the mutation restored.

Restored: MCP 126 / 126, webFetch 46 / 46. All 43 backend suites that load the hosted runtime pass (624 tests). native-memory-append first failed only because this worktree's cli/ had no node_modules; it passes 4 / 4 once they are installed. The Goose suite passes (22, 1 skipped).
Review round
One fresh Opus-class subagent reviewed 034e0a5: GATE: PASS, filed as a review on this PR. Its should-fix: an agent's own messages share the 50-row page, so a full read can still miss an unseen one. That costs one turn, not a loop. Fixed in 262bab0, where the hint now says the read "usually" clears it. The same commit takes its three nits: a test at exactly 50 (RF4), the README tool count, and a comment on the Goose allowlist.
CodeRabbit
One thread, answered in-thread and fixed in 67b960d: the public Claude and Codex adapters withheld only attach_file, so commonly_catch_up would have reached public seats. Each of the four adapter tests asserts the new entry; all four were red before the list changed. One arm of adapters.claude.environment ("runs in bwrap…") fails on this macOS host with and without this PR. It is a Linux bwrap test.
Residuals
docs/agents/COMMONLY_MCP.md (26) and docs/MCP_INTEGRATION.md (29) carry tool counts that were already stale before this PR. The new tool is listed in the first, the README and the docs-site table.
This publishes @commonlyai/mcp@latest on merge, so it is a hand press.
…ds carry ids
Two gaps on an agent's read surface, both found by the D214 dogfood rerun
(F37, findings F and G).
F. A 409 unseen_messages holds an agent's sends until a read returns every
unseen message, and commonly_get_messages returns at most 50. A new agent
in an established pod, or one back after a long absence, can never clear
that by reading. The CLI wrapper calls the catch-up endpoint before a turn,
but an agent using the MCP server directly had no verb for it, so its only
way through was continueAnyway on every send. The MCP server now exposes
commonly_catch_up (POST /pods/:podId/catch-up, confirmSkipHistory:true),
and a 409 unseen_messages error carries a `next` line naming the read that
clears it, or commonly_catch_up when more than 50 are unseen.
G. The hosted runtime's commonly_read_context dropped each message's id, so
a hosted reviewer asked about a message by id could not find it. It now
returns the id the MCP read already returns.

…50 boundary
From the review round on 034e0a5: an agent's own messages share the
read page, so a page of 50 can still miss an unseen one; the hint now says
the read usually clears it and keeps commonly_catch_up as the fallback.
Adds a test at exactly 50, corrects the README tool count, and notes why
the public Goose allowlist leaves catch_up out.

One fresh Opus-class subagent reviewed 034e0a5, read-only. MCP 125/125 and the backend webFetch suite 46/46 passed. It found no blocker.
The hold isn't weakened. continueAnyway already sends without reading anything. Catch-up returns the latest 20 messages and records skippedCount. The route still requires confirmSkipHistory:true and canViewPod, and it refuses with a 503 when the PostgreSQL tail is unavailable. The description says plainly that skipped means not read.
No hint can loop. Every route that issues the hold accepts continueAnyway, and after a catch-up only messages newer than its snapshot can hold a send.
Hosted read_context ids: byOtherAuthors and givenAddresses read the full rows, not the returned list, so URL provenance is unchanged.
The only MCP tool-count assertion is tools.test.mjs. verify-moltbot-tool-contract.js enumerates the openclaw extension, not MCP.
should-fix: an agent's own messages share the 50-row page, so a read can miss an unseen one when 50 or fewer are unseen. That costs one turn, not a loop. The hint now says the read "usually" clears it.
nit: the README tool count was stale. Now 34.
nit: the 50 boundary wasn't tested. There is now an arm at exactly 50, which goes red when > becomes >=.
nit: the public Goose allowlist leaves commonly_catch_up out on purpose. It now carries a comment saying why.

From CodeRabbit on #3269. Public Claude, Codex, OpenCode and Qwen seats
withhold only what PUBLIC_WITHHELD_TOOLS names, and a public seat has no
shell, so MCP is its only reach into the API. Leaving commonly_catch_up
off that list would have let a public seat move its read cursor past
history it never read. It joins attach_file there. Workspace Claude seats
share the list and lose nothing: the wrapper already catches up before
each turn.
