fix(v2): an open thread's foot stays on one line on a phone; the chat frame draws Follow - #3294
On a phone, an open thread's foot used to wrap. Follow dropped to its own 44px line under Reply in thread and Collapse. Now the foot stays on one line. While the thread is open its replies are on screen, so the reply count is visually hidden there (screen readers still read it). Follow takes the right edge at 32px, and a ring gives it a 44px hit area, matching the two keys beside it. Desktop is unchanged: count, then Follow.
The d215 artboard changes with it:
Follow is drawn. All five chat frames now show it after the count, as live does. On the phone frames the count is hidden the same way.
The 390 chat frame starts under the top bar. The pod has 166 messages, but the frame drew empty space above Fern. It now draws the end of the two messages before Fern (Ivy's and Ada's), which is what a long pod scrolled to its newest message looks like.
Checked
Frontend suite: 219 suites and 2,544 tests pass; tsc clean.
v2-layout-invariants replaces the old phone rule (a 44px min-height on Follow) with the one-line foot: the count is visually hidden, Follow is 32px with margin-left: auto, and its ring adds 6px above and below.
Frame-diff of this branch, served locally against the prod API read-only and scored against this branch's artboard, on the frame's own messages: chat 1440 light and dark pass at layout 0.155 and structure 0.293 with no repaints; chat 390 light and dark pass at layout 0.202 and structure 0.291.
Measured at 390: Follow's right edge is the foot's right edge (368px), with the card's 10px padding outside it. Nothing clips.
…rame draws Follow and a scrolled history
On a phone the open thread's foot wrapped Follow onto a second 44px line
under Reply in thread and Collapse. The replies are on screen when the
thread is open, so the count is now visually hidden there (screen readers
still read it) and Follow takes the right edge at 32px, with a ring taking
its hit area to 44px like the keys beside it.
The d215 chat frames now draw Follow after the count, as live has it, and
the 390 chat frame draws the end of the earlier history above Fern instead
of empty space: the pod has 166 messages, so the stream starts under the
top bar.

The mobile thread footer now visually clips the reply count and places the Follow control at the right edge. The Follow control is 32px tall, with a 6px extended touch area. The layout test and chat design examples reflect the updated footer.

At widths up to 640px, the reply count is visually clipped and the 32px-tall Follow button moves to the right edge. Its pseudo-element extends the touch area by 6px. The layout test checks these rules, and the design examples show Follow alongside the reply count.

I found no blocking defect.
Specificity and order are fine. The phone rule for Follow (.v2-root .v2-thread-replies__foot button.v2-thread-replies__follow, chat-pane.css:269) has specificity 0,3,1. The base rule (.v2-root button.v2-thread-replies__follow, :798) has 0,2,1, so the phone rule wins even though it comes earlier in the file. The same holds for the count: 0,3,0 at :258 beats 0,1,0 at :781, so position:absolute and margin-left:auto are both overridden. Follow's padding:0 and border:0 come from the base rule, so the 32px height is the drawn height.
The touch target reaches 44px. 32 + 6 + 6 = 44 tall, and it is 16px wider than the label. The rings can touch in one tight case. Collapse's inset:-7px is measured inside its 1px border, so its ring reaches 6px past the border. Follow's ring reaches 8px past its edge. With the 12px gap that adds up to 14px, so the rings overlap by 2px when margin-left:auto leaves less than 2px of free space. That happens when the row is nearly full, for example with longer translated labels. When Follow wraps, the vertical reach is 6 + 6 = 12, which meets the 12px row gap without overlapping. The comment at :830 ("rings meet without overlapping") is now slightly untrue for Follow. A nit, not a blocker: inset:-6px on all sides would restore the invariant.
Accessibility is fine. The clip-path pattern keeps the count in the accessibility tree. The reading order is unchanged: Reply in thread, Collapse, "N replies", then Follow (V2ThreadMessages.tsx:551-558). Screen-reader users lose nothing. The hidden count is positioned against .v2-thread-replies, which is position:relative, so it cannot leak out.
Nothing else depends on the count being visible. The class is used only at V2ThreadMessages.tsx:551, and the rule is scoped to the open thread's foot. The collapsed card carries its own count markup.
No regression from 641 to 760px. The 640px block doesn't apply there, so the count stays visible and Follow keeps its look from before this change. Its existing 16px hit height in that range is not made worse.
The test asserts the three new rules inside the 640px block. The artboard rules match the CSS.
Its ring reached 8px sideways, so in a nearly full foot (a longer
translated label) it could overlap Collapse's ring across the 12px gap.
6px all round keeps it 44px tall and 52px wide.

Re-stamp (same reviewer) at c977db0; the only change since 8689e8e is the ring nit.
I re-checked PR #3294 at the new head, c977db0, and the nit is fixed. Follow's ring is now inset: -6px on every side (frontend/src/v2/chat/chat-pane.css:278), so it is 32 + 6 + 6 = 44px tall.
It now meets Collapse's ring without overlapping. Collapse's ring (inset: -7px, measured inside its 1px border) reaches 6px past the button, and Follow's reaches 6px, so the two fill the 12px gap exactly.
The invariant test at v2-layout-invariants.test.ts:2518 matches the new rule.
One wording nit, not a defect: the comment at chat-pane.css:257 says the ring is "52 across". The width is actually the label's width plus 12px, so it only comes to about 52 for "Follow" and is wider for "Following" or a translated label.

This assertion still passes if content: '' or position: absolute is removed, although the ring no longer provides the intended hit area. It also passes if Follow loses position: relative. Assert those declarations in their respective rules.

Keep Follow’s touch target at least 44px wide.
The Follow button has no padding. In Chinese, 关注 is about 22px wide, so the current 6px extension on each side produces a target of about 34px. The 12px footer gap already prevents overlap with Collapse’s ring.

Update the .v2-thread-replies__follow button’s styling so its touch target is at
least 44px wide, including the Chinese label and any existing hit-area
extension; preserve the footer spacing that prevents overlap with Collapse.
