fix(v2): display type matches the frames' optical sizes, and screen readers reach each sidebar pin by its pod's name - #3415
Follows #3412. Display type changes on every page, including the public landing, because the display font now loads with its optical-size axis, as the d215 frames do.
What changed
Display font.App.tsx and V2App.tsx import @fontsource-variable/bricolage-grotesque/opsz.css instead of the package default, which has only the weight axis. The frames load Bricolage Grotesque from Google Fonts with opsz,wght@12..96, and with font-optical-sizing: auto the browser picks the optical size from the font size. The family name doesn't change, so no CSS changes.
Sidebar pin, reachable by screen readers. At rest the pin was hidden with visibility, which takes it out of the accessibility tree. A screen-reader user on a phone could reach it only after the press and hold.
It's now hidden with opacity: 0; pointer-events: none, so it stays in the tree and the tab order, but a hidden pin still can't catch a tap.
It shows on row hover, on keyboard focus in the row, on focus on the pin itself (a screen reader moving to it), and after the press and hold.
Each pin is named for its pod: "Pin Ship lane", or "Unpin Ship lane" when pinned. Before, every pin was named "Pin pod".
Strings.podsSidebar.pinAriaLabel and unpinAriaLabel take {{name}}:

So display type gets narrower by that much and now matches the frames exactly. Body text is IBM Plex and is unchanged.
Frame diff, every page. All 106 pairs pass (light and dark, 1440 and 390) on a read-only dev:live of this branch against prod's API, the same 106 that pass on prod at 06ae3ec. Four got closer to their frames and none got worse: Connect 390 (layout 0.296 → 0.215, structure 0.450 → 0.192) and Invite 390 (structure 0.429 → 0.357), each in both themes.
Accessibility at 390, headless Chromium with touch, in light and dark:
The sidebar's accessibility snapshot lists a "Pin " button after every row at rest.
Each pin is opacity 0, pointer-events none and tabIndex 0, and the row's time is visible.
A tap where the hidden pin sits lands on the row.
When the pin has focus it shows, and the time hides.
Tests: the frontend suite passes, 236 suites and 2874 tests.
New in V2PodsSidebar.scale.test.tsx: every pin is in the tree, not aria-hidden and not out of the tab order, and named for its row's pod. One is "Unpin" when pinned.
v2-layout-invariants.test.ts: the font guard now pins the opsz import, and the pin guard pins the opacity and pointer-events rules in place of the old visibility rule.
Some row queries in the sidebar test are anchored with ^ or picked by row element, because each row's pin now carries the pod's name too.
Not proven
No real VoiceOver run. The tree and focus behaviour are checked in Chromium, but swipe order and activation on an iPhone are not.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Sidebar rows now display owner-specific names where applicable, and pin controls use pod-specific accessible names. Pins remain accessible while hidden from pointer input and are revealed by row interaction or focus. The app entries now import the optical-size font stylesheet.
Changes: Pods sidebar
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pod names and accessible labels frontend/src/v2/components/V2PodsSidebar.tsx, frontend/src/i18n/locales/*.json, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2PodsSidebar.scale.test.tsx
Rows compute and display a pod name, using an owner-specific name for another user’s “My Workspace.” Pin and unpin labels include the row name. Sidebar tests check pod-qualified labels and use row-specific queries.
Pin visibility and focus behavior frontend/src/v2/v2.css, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2PodsSidebar.scale.test.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/v2-layout-invariants.test.ts
Pins use opacity and pointer-event states instead of visibility: hidden. Hover, row focus, pin focus, and touch press-and-hold reveal them. Tests cover accessibility, touch interactions, and row-time visibility.
Both app entries import the Bricolage Grotesque optical-size stylesheet. Layout invariant tests check for that import and the absence of the default import.
The previously missing shell font regression check is now present, with no established remaining merge risk.

GATE: PASS @ 5f26e94 (#3415, launch/opsz; one-round review gate, includes the zh-CN two-pass)
Summary
The PR does three things, and each holds up in the code and when measured:
Display font. It loads Bricolage Grotesque's opsz faces, and they carry the weight axis too.
Sidebar pin. The pin stays in the accessibility tree at rest, hidden with opacity 0 and pointer-events none, and is named for its pod.
Tests. The hold test is stronger, and the new and changed tests fail when their fix is reverted.
I checked the focused pin in a real browser on the branch. A keyboard-focused pin shows at opacity 1 with its focus ring, in light and dark. There are no blocking findings.
Blocking findings
None.
Non-blocking notes
A mouse-clicked pin stays shown until focus moves (frontend/src/v2/v2.css:4517, .v2-root .v2-pods__rowwrap .v2-pods__pin:focus).
Measured at 1440 on dev:live: hover a row, click its pin, move the mouse away.
The pin keeps opacity 1 with no ring, because :focus is set and :focus-visible is not. The row's time stays hidden, through :has(.v2-pods__pin:focus).
Before this PR, the pin hid when the mouse left. This only follows a click on the pin itself; a mouse click on the row leaves 0 pins showing (measured).
I find it acceptable, since it shows the state that just changed. If the d215 frame wants the time back right away, the cheap fix is .v2-pods__pin:focus:not(:focus-visible) with no reveal. That fix risks hiding a pin a screen reader moved to, if that focus doesn't match :focus-visible, so I would leave it as is.
No test covers the other-workspace label.
rowName (V2PodsSidebar.tsx:363) uses the same expression the row-name span used before, and the span now renders rowName. So the label and the visible name cannot drift.
On live data, all 8 pins' labels equal "Pin/Unpin " plus their row name exactly, with 0 mismatches.
The fleet fixture in the new test has no other user's "My Workspace", so the podNames.otherWorkspace branch is untested in the label. A single fixture row would pin it.
VoiceOver is unproven, as the PR body says. The remaining risk: iOS VoiceOver activates a pin that hasn't received DOM focus, and that pin still has pointer-events none. WebKit's accessibility press normally dispatches on the element, not by hit-test, so I expect it to work, but no device run shows it.
Tab order is now row, pin, row, pin. The Cofounder ruled on 11-04 that this is intended. Each pin carries a distinct name, so the extra stops can be told apart.
zh-CN adjudication (two passes, per zh-cn-ui-localization)
Voice pass. "置顶 {{name}}" and "取消置顶 {{name}}" read naturally as screen-reader button labels: verb first, then the object, with no 翻译腔. They follow the file's existing verb-plus-name labels, 打开 {{name}}, 添加 {{name}} and 移除 {{name}}. Quote marks, as in confirmDeletePod, aren't needed for a spoken label.
Terminology pass.
置顶 and 取消置顶 match pinTitle and unpinTitle, and 已置顶 in filters.pinned.
The half-width space before {{name}} follows the file's convention for interpolated names.
Dropping the literal "Pod" removes nothing from the glossary.
With a CJK pod name, the space reads as a token boundary, the same as the 打开 {{name}} precedent.
Adjudication. No changes; the change table is empty.
What I verified
Diff and docs. Read the full diff against origin/main (8 files), the PR body, REVIEW.md, review-checklist rule 51, and the zh-CN skill.
Font, entry points. Both App.tsx:18 and V2App.tsx:12 import @fontsource-variable/bricolage-grotesque/opsz.css, a static import in the entry chunk, so the landing still gets the faces. The invariant guard pins the new import and rejects the bare one.
Font, weight axis.opsz.css declares font-weight: 200 800 on all 3 subsets. metadata.json lists opsz 12–96, wght 200–800 and wdth 75–100. On dev:live the page loaded bricolage-grotesque-latin-opsz-normal.woff2.
Font, real weights. In headless Chromium, "How this reply was made" at 32 px measured 367.922 at 400, 377.516 at 600, 382.328 at 700 and 387.125 at 800. Synthetic bold from a single face would not step like that. The opsz axis also responds: 'opsz' 12 measured 392.23 and 'opsz' 96 measured 350.59.
Font, other dependencies. There are no font-variation-settings, font-optical-sizing or opsz uses in frontend/src or frontend/design-system. The family name is unchanged, so v2.css, V2ArtifactsPage.css and tokens.css need no edits.
Prod loads bricolage-grotesque-latin-wght-normal. Both match the PR's table.
Pin, at rest (dev:live, 1440). Opacity 0, pointer-events none, and the 44 px ::before also computes to none. The time is visible. elementFromPoint at the hidden pin's centre returns the row.
Pin, keyboard focus. Tab from a row focuses its pin, and the pin shows at opacity 1 with pointer-events auto.
The ring is 0 0 0 3px rgba(29,63,209,.18) in light and 0 0 0 2px bg, 0 0 0 4px #8aa2ff in dark. :focus-visible is true and the time hides.
This settles the coordinator's check: a keyboard-focused pin is visible and ringed.
Pin, hover. Hovering the row shows the pin. Moving onto the pin keeps it shown, and elementFromPoint then hits the pin. Desktop hover works.
Pin, specificity. Every reveal selector scores (0,3,0) or (0,4,0), above the (0,2,1) rest rule.
Pin, toggle state. The toggle is localStorage-only (useV2Pinned). I clicked it twice and v2.pinnedPodIds is restored to [].
Tests. I ran jest-capped.sh on V2PodsSidebar.scale|v2-layout-invariants: 2 suites, 425 tests passed.
Mutation check. I copied both files aside, then reverted the labels to an unnamed 'pod' and the pin rest rule to visibility: hidden.
Both guarding tests failed: "every pin stays in the accessibility tree at rest…" and the direction-C invariant.
I restored both files from the copies, and git diff --quiet passed.
^ anchoring. Rows' accessible names start with the pod name, since the initials mark is aria-hidden. Pins start with "Pin " or "Unpin ". So ^ only excludes the pins and keeps every assertion; the DM and avatar rows, whose names start with an img alt, use rowButton instead. The rewritten quick-tap now asserts that the tap navigates, which it did not before.
Browser. The Playwright browser is closed. I made only GET requests to both servers; the only write was the pin toggle in localStorage, now restored.
2980-2980: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Assert the optical-size font import in the shell entry too.
The test checks the optical-size import only in App.tsx. Nothing checks V2App.tsx. Reverting that import to the default stylesheet can make the shell load weight-only faces after the entry, which can change display-text width. The test still passes after that revert.
🧪 Suggested test assertions
const shell = read('../V2App.tsx');
+ expect(shell).toContain("import '@fontsource-variable/bricolage-grotesque/opsz.css';");+ expect(shell).not.toMatch(/^import '@fontsource-variable\/bricolage-grotesque';$/m);
// The composer lives in V2Layout, so V2Layout stays IN the shell chunk.

Add own and shared My Workspace pods to the pin-name fixture. Assert that their pin accessible names use the distinct displayed row names. The existing owner-name test checks only row buttons, so it does not detect replacing rowName with pod.name in the pin label.

Carry-over to c185b60 (one-review-round rule: a push that only answers CodeRabbit keeps the PASS). The delta from 5f26e94 is test-only. v2-layout-invariants.test.ts now also guards V2App.tsx's opsz import, and V2PodsSidebar.scale.test.tsx asserts the owner-qualified pin names ("Pin My Workspace (alex)" / "Pin My Workspace"). Each fails when its fix is reverted (2 failed / 423), and both suites pass (425/425). No product code changed.
On CodeRabbit's review (5771810102): both points are valid, and both are fixed in c185b60, test-only.
Shell font import (minor):v2-layout-invariants.test.ts now asserts that V2App.tsx imports @fontsource-variable/bricolage-grotesque/opsz.css and not the default file. Reverting that import fails the route-chunks test.
Owner-qualified pin names (nitpick): the My Workspace owner test now asserts "Pin My Workspace (alex)" and "Pin My Workspace". Passing pod.name instead of the displayed row name fails it.
Correction to this PR's frame-diff claim. Connect 390 did not get closer to its frame, so three pairs improved, not four.
On prod, Connect 390 scores 0.296 layout and 0.450 structure, both before this PR (06ae3ec) and after it shipped (00166e0). The 0.215 / 0.192 came from the local run, and an older local run without this change scores the same 0.215 / 0.192. So the local run is what moved the score, not this PR.
The mechanism: the read-only dev:live serves the page from http://localhost:3217, and Connect prints the instance URL from the build's API base. At 390, COMMONLY_API_URL=http://localhost:3217 \ fits on one line, while prod's https://api.commonly.me pushes the \ onto its own line. The local page is one line shorter, so everything below it sits about 21 px higher and happens to land closer to the frame.
Invite 390's improvement is real: on prod its structure went from 0.429 to 0.357 once this shipped. A local run is only comparable with another local run of main on the same origin.

Follows #3412. Display type changes on every page, including the public landing, because the display font now loads with its optical-size axis, as the d215 frames do.
What changed
Display font.
App.tsxandV2App.tsximport@fontsource-variable/bricolage-grotesque/opsz.cssinstead of the package default, which has only the weight axis. The frames load Bricolage Grotesque from Google Fonts withopsz,wght@12..96, and withfont-optical-sizing: autothe browser picks the optical size from the font size. The family name doesn't change, so no CSS changes.Sidebar pin, reachable by screen readers. At rest the pin was hidden with
visibility, which takes it out of the accessibility tree. A screen-reader user on a phone could reach it only after the press and hold.opacity: 0; pointer-events: none, so it stays in the tree and the tab order, but a hidden pin still can't catch a tap.Strings.
podsSidebar.pinAriaLabelandunpinAriaLabeltake{{name}}:pinAriaLabelunpinAriaLabelpinAriaLabelunpinAriaLabel置顶 and 取消置顶 are the terms the sidebar already uses, and a half-width space separates them from the name.
Test from fix(v2): profile counts, the BYO phone head, the phone sidebar's time and the run trace title match their frames #3412's CodeRabbit thread. The sidebar hold test's quick tap now clicks another pod's row and checks that it opens. It was ready before fix(v2): profile counts, the BYO phone head, the phone sidebar's time and the run trace title match their frames #3412 merged, and the queued branch couldn't take it.
