Purpose

Adds abort-signal support to the openai-native and openai-compatible providers: completePrompt honors CompletePromptOptions.abortSignal/timeoutMs, and createMessage bridges the task's external metadata.abortSignal into in-flight requests so task cancellation actually cancels the provider request.

Changes

  • openai-native.ts
    • completePrompt: request-local signal via mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(options?.abortSignal, options?.timeoutMs) (falls back to a fresh controller signal) instead of clobbering the streaming this.abortController; AbortError is rethrown as-is so callers can identify cancellations.
    • createMessage paths (executeRequest and the makeResponsesApiRequest fetch fallback): Bedrock-pattern bridging of metadata.abortSignal into the internal controller (pre-aborted guard + { once: true } listener); abort errors rethrown as-is in the fallback path.
  • openai-compatible.ts
    • completePrompt: merged signal from mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout forwarded to the AI SDK generateText abortSignal option.
    • createMessage: metadata.abortSignal forwarded to streamText so in-flight streams abort on cancellation.

Tests

  • openai-native.spec.ts (extended): abort signal passthrough, timeout abort, streaming-controller isolation, merged signal abort, pre-aborted AbortError, fallback fetch pre-aborted + mid-request abort, non-Error rethrow, gpt-5.1 request-body coverage (service tier / reasoning / verbosity / prompt cache retention), response id and encrypted-content accessors.
  • openai-compatible.spec.ts (new): completePrompt signal/timeout passthrough, timeoutMs <= 0 disabled, pre-aborted AbortError, error propagation; createMessage abortSignal bridging (pass-through, absent metadata, pre-aborted, mid-request abort).

Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404.

Updated 2026-10-11 (head bbc3a5b71)

  • Merged current upstream/main (995167eed) (merge commit bbc3a5b71), clearing the has-conflicts state.
  • openai-compatible.ts conflict merged semantically: main now wraps createMessage/completePrompt errors with handleOpenAIError; this branch adds the abort wiring. The merged catches re-throw the raw error when the request signal is aborted (a cancelled request is not an API failure — the shared abort contract surfaces unchanged, which is what this unit's pre-aborted/mid-request-abort tests pin) and wrap everything else exactly as main does.
  • openai-compatible.spec.ts was an add/add: main created the provider-behavior suite and this branch created the abort-wiring suite for the same path. The file now carries both: main's suite verbatim as the base, this branch's suite appended as "OpenAICompatibleHandler abort wiring", reusing main's hoisted ai-module mocks (the branch's handler class renamed to AbortWiringHandler to avoid the name collision).

Verification at this head: merged openai-compatible.spec.ts 31/31 passed (both suites); dependent base-openai-compatible-provider*.spec 27/27; tsc --noEmit 0 errors; ESLint --max-warnings=0 clean on both touched files; Prettier clean; src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged. No new as any, no changeset/CHANGELOG files.

Round 2 at this head (863c5e7aa)

CodeRabbit's single open thread (completePrompt abort tests settle before cancellation is observable) is addressed: a new pending-request test keeps generateText pending, rejects with the real DOMException on signal abort, and asserts the provider's rejection after a mid-request abort — pinning the merged catch's abort guard (negative control: removing the guard turns it red). Thread replied and resolved; 32/32 spec passes, ESLint 0, Prettier clean.

Updated this round (2026-10-13)

Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict in openai-native.ts handleStreamResponse catch: main removed the duplicate telemetry capture (the createMessage catch captures the rethrown failure once); this branch added the request-local abort guard that surfaces the canonical AbortError before the "Error processing response stream" wrapping. Kept both — guard first, then main's no-captureException comment in place of the removed capture.

Verification at this head: 194/194 green across the three touched specs (openai-compatible, openai-native, request-config-builder); tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Updated this round (2026-10-13, review follow-up)

  • SSE loop boundary: the between-pulls abort check in handleStreamResponse now throws the contract AbortError instead of breaking, so a cancellation landing after a chunk was handed out surfaces as name === "AbortError" instead of resolving with partial output (mirrors the SDK path's between-pulls checks).
  • New test pins cancellation between successive pulls (body yields one chunk then hangs); negative control verified (reverting the throw to break fails it). Two tests that encoded the break behavior now expect the contract AbortError; the fallback-still-runs guarantee is unchanged.

Verification at this head: 114/114 green in openai-native.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.

Timeout guard hardening (helper port)

Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.

Fractional-timeout rounding wave

Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).

Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)

The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • OpenAI provider requests support caller cancellation and configurable timeouts for prompt completion and streaming.
    • Streaming requests can be cancelled before or during execution, including when fallback response handling is used.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Cancelled requests stop cleanly instead of returning partial results or being reported as provider errors.
    • Concurrent requests maintain independent cancellation behavior.
    • Missing, non-finite, and non-positive timeout values do not trigger timeouts. Fractional timeouts are rounded up, and excessively long timeouts are capped.

OpenAI-compatible requests now forward caller abort signals and combine prompt-completion signals with optional timeouts. OpenAI-native streaming uses request-local cancellation state and cleans up listeners and unfinished readers. Native prompt completions merge caller and timeout signals and normalize recognized cancellation errors.

Native and compatible provider cancellation paths are ready to merge: canceled requests propagate aborts, avoid unintended fallback requests, and do not cancel overlapping streams through shared state.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 25417

Request-local cancellation improves isolation and does not demonstrably expand credential or network authority. A fallback stream can still report partial completion after cancellation, although the main task flow independently checks cancellation before marking the stream complete. Remaining uncertainty is limited chiefly to other callers and SDK cancellation behavior.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Caller cancellation now reaches a longstanding SSE path that can terminate normally with partial output rather than AbortError. When cancellation occurs between yielded chunks and the next loop check, normal completion bypasses cancellation error handling, weakening the provider's terminal-state contract for consumers relying on rejection. Reader cleanup still occurs, and the inspected Task consumer independently rejects cancelled completion; unauthorized tool execution or broader security exposure was not established.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new cancellation authority is request-scoped: a holder of the supplied signal can terminate the corresponding provider request. Local controller capture prevents that signal from targeting a later request through the shared field. Cross-tenant, cross-service, or environment-wide exposure was not established by the inspected paths.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — In the inspected native path, the external abort signal controls termination, not endpoint selection, bearer credentials, session identity, or request payload. The fallback continues to use the configured provider URL and API key. The public provider interface exposes metadata cancellation rather than access to the private controller field.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Transport cleanup and independent task cancellation checks contain the demonstrated partial-success issue in the main task flow. Other consumers relying solely on AbortError would not receive an unambiguous cancellation outcome from every native SSE exit; their effective exposure remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make cancellation terminal semantics consistent whether a dependency throws, emits an abort event, or closes normally. Preserve the existing request-local cleanup and independent task cancellation checks so failure containment does not depend on one transport's error behavior.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior regression remains unresolved. openai-compatible.ts rethrows every caught error when the caller signal is aborted in createMessage (lines 211–217) and completePrompt (lines 245–252). The tests cover status errors without an aborted signal (for example, openai-compatible.spec.ts lines 295–320 and 449–489) and abort-shaped errors with an aborted signal (lines 632–657, 729–750, and 799–850). They do not cover an aborted caller signal combined with a non-abort provider error carrying a status. Both changed error-classification branches can therefore bypass handleOpenAIError without a failing focused test.

Resolution

Add one focused createMessage test and one focused completePrompt test. Abort the caller signal, reject the SDK operation with a non-abort provider error carrying a status, and assert that handleOpenAIError preserves the status and adds the provider name. Keep the existing abort-shaped tests.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The prior duplicate-work failure remains in the changed openai-native.ts path. In executeRequest, an SDK error is caught at lines 519-537. If requestController.signal.aborted is true but isRequestAborted(sdkErr) is false, the code still calls makeResponsesApiRequest. That fallback creates another controller and calls fetch with an already-aborted signal at lines 678-702. The changed regression test at openai-native.spec.ts:1375-1431 explicitly reproduces this race and expects fetch to be called once. This issues fallback work after cancellation.

Resolution

When requestController.signal.aborted is true, do not call makeResponsesApiRequest. Propagate the cancellation or the original terminal SDK error without starting a fallback request. Update the race regression test to assert that fetch is not called.

Series follow-up flag: adopt RequestConfigBuilder for abort/timeout option construction

This PR currently builds its abort/timeout request options directly with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(...) from src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts. That is behaviorally identical to the RequestConfigBuilder path (src/api/providers/config-builder/request-config-builder.ts, introduced in #1008) - the builder wraps the same utility. The series plan is to make the builder the canonical call site for SDK request-option construction (typed TOptions variants per SDK), so this PR is flagged for that update.

Status: adoption commit in flight on this branch. A mechanical call-site refactor routing the openai-native and openai-compatible abort wiring through RequestConfigBuilder is being pushed to this PR before merge; this flag is resolved by that commit.
Abort semantics (pre-abort fail-fast, mid-flight bridging, the timeoutMs > 0 guard, and normalization to AbortError) are pinned by this PR's regression tests and are preserved by the refactor.

Handle SDK cancellation before fallback and error wrapping.

When the request signal is aborted, OpenAI SDK v5.12.2 throws APIUserAbortError, whose name is not "AbortError". executeRequest currently starts the SSE fallback, and completePrompt records telemetry and wraps the cancellation. Recognize both cancellation types before fallback, telemetry, or error wrapping. Add streaming and completion cancellation tests.

- Around line 414-448: The OpenAI SDK cancellation error is APIUserAbortError
rather than only AbortError, so update executeRequest to recognize both
cancellation types before starting SSE fallback, and update completePrompt to
skip telemetry and error wrapping for either type. Add tests covering
cancellation during streaming and completion, preserving the existing abort
behavior.

Round 1 — final status: all checks green, changed-line coverage verified

Part of the abort-signal series addressing #404 (builds on #674, #901, #1008). openai-native + openai-compatible abort wiring + config-builder retrofit.

Final verified 2026-08-20: all CI checks green on this head (0 pending / 0 failed), CodeRabbit review clean, and zero new bot findings after this commit.

  • Final head: 470273876 (rebased onto main 252c69b52)
  • Work in this round: abort bridging in both openai-native executeRequest paths (request-local controller; named listener removed in finally both paths) and in openai-compatible (both createMessage forwarding + completePrompt); CodeRabbit minors addressed (incl. the primary-signal spec case).
  • Config builder: both completePrompt paths route through RequestConfigBuilder.mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout; builder statics + shared spec block are byte-identical to feat(api): abort signal support for openai-codex (completePrompt + createMessage) #1290's (verified by blob hash) so either merge order is conflict-free. The openai-compatible createMessage pass-through is intentionally kept direct — the builder writes the signal key while the Vercel AI createMessage options shape expects abortSignal (documented in code).
  • Changed-line coverage: 40/40 executable changed lines covered (100%), including the builder statics. 152 provider/builder tests green.

Thanks for contributing. This comment tracks the review sequence and the next action.

Current step: Awaiting fresh human maintainer or CODEOWNER approval.

Automated review is complete for the latest commit but does not replace human approval.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

The between-pulls abort check in handleStreamResponse broke out of the
loop, so a cancellation landing after a chunk was handed out and before
the next pull resolved createMessage with partial output instead of
surfacing the cancellation. The check now throws the contract
AbortError, mirroring the SDK path's own between-pulls checks.

Two existing tests encoded the break behavior (empty/partial resolution
after cancellation) and are updated to expect the contract AbortError;
a new test pins cancellation between successive pulls with a body that
hangs after one chunk (negative control verified: reverting the throw
to break fails the new test).

Verification at this head: 114/114 green in openai-native.spec.ts;
tsc --noEmit 0 errors; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on touched files;
prettier clean.

Conflict resolution (upstream Zoo-Code-Org#2038 unused-variable linting + dead
code removal vs this branch's abort wiring):
- openai-compatible.ts / openai-native.ts completePrompt: keep the
  branch's request-local merged signal (upstream's _options variant
predates the abort wiring that consumes options).
- openai-native.ts responses-stream catch: keep the branch's
post-loop aborted check and isRequestAborted classification
  (upstream's bare catch predates it).
- openai-native.ts SSE reader: keep streamCompleted (used by the
early-exit cancel guard); adopt upstream's removal of the dead
  totalInputTokens/totalOutputTokens locals.
- Per the Stryker-directive policy, the two pre-existing
"Stryker disable" comments in openai-native.ts are removed; the
mutants they suppressed are killed by the existing dual-direction
cancel assertions (normal completion asserts no cancel; early exit
  asserts cancel).
- eslint-suppressions.json: merged with upstream's rebaselined
  counts; openai-native.ts no-explicit-any is upstream's 27 plus the
branch's single pre-existing any (28, pruned to actual).
- openai-native.spec.ts: rename the unused mock arg to _options per
  the upstream lint config.

Verification at this merge: 147/147 green in openai-native.spec.ts +
openai-compatible.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit 0 errors; eslint
--max-warnings=0 clean with pruned suppression counts; prettier
clean.

…ch as unknown

CodeRabbit follow-up on the main refresh:
- openai-compatible.spec.ts: three comment arrows were mangled to
'??' by an encoding roundtrip during the merge; restore '->'-style
arrow glyph (the original '->' arrow character).
- openai-native.ts: catch (sdkErr: unknown) instead of any; the body
already handles unknown (isRequestAborted takes unknown and
instanceof Error narrows before .name). The no-explicit-any
suppression for the file returns to upstream's count of 27.

…meout delays

Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1300 timeout guard finding (CodeRabbit): Node's
AbortSignal.timeout throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for non-integer delays
(Infinity) and clamps delays above 2^31-1 ms to 1 ms, so a
non-finite timeoutMs threw a RangeError instead of running the
request, and an overflowing one aborted almost immediately. The
helper now treats non-finite values as "no timeout" and caps
finite delays at 2^31-1 ms.

Regression tests added; negative controls (reverting the guard)
fail exactly the two new tests.

CodeRabbit follow-up on the timeout guard: Node validates
AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5,
0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE just like Infinity did. The helper now
rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before
capping at 2^31-1 ms. Regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout
(undefined, 1.5); negative control (reverting the rounding) fails
exactly that test.

CodeRabbit: the fractional-timeout test only proved the call did
not throw and eventually aborted - a round-down mutation (1.5 -> 1)
would still pass. The test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins
the received delay: 2 for 1.5 and 1 for 0.5 (never 0). Negative
control: mutating Math.ceil to Math.floor fails exactly this test.
