Combines every open PR into one branch so they land together and CI judges them as a whole:

Each branch is merged as-is onto main, in that order. Conflict resolutions:

zone_core kept its own copy of the terminal-control stripper that
abnegate-secret 0.1.3 already publishes as sanitize and sanitize_owned,
with the same redaction pass behind it. Two copies drift, and the
published one has since closed gaps the local one still had: invisible
formatting characters (zero-width, bidirectional overrides, tag
characters) let a credential split by a zero-width space reach the
transcript unredacted, two-byte escapes outside 0x40-0x5F and escapes
with intermediate bytes such as ESC ( B left their tails behind, and
the ESC X start-of-string leaked its payload.

ToolResult and zone_notify now call the crate directly. zone_notify
used zone_core for nothing else, so that dependency goes too. The new
ToolResult tests pin each output change, and a read_file test pins the
cost: file content reaches the model through ToolResult, so variation
selectors and zero-width joiners and non-joiners are dropped from what
it reads, though not from the file.

Clippy 1.98 flags Routing as a large enum: the Chat variant's Route
makes every Routing at least 856 bytes, 216 more than the next largest
variant, and clippy -D warnings fails zone_server on main. Boxing the
route keeps the enum near the media variants' size; it is built once
per turn, so the allocation costs nothing that matters.

abnegate-agent 0.1.x requires rmcp ^3.4, so moving to it later would
otherwise drag an MCP SDK bump into an already large migration. Bumping
now keeps that PR to the crate swap itself. rmcp 3.3 and 3.4 add
ServerConfig/ClientConfig and negotiate_initialize, route peer
cancellation by lifecycle and tighten HTTP transport validation; none of
zone's call sites change and the negotiated protocol versions are the
same.

Routing cancellation by lifecycle means a stdio server's
notifications/cancelled no longer fails zone's in-flight tools/call at
once. The call is then bounded only by ToolContext::command_timeout, so
a test now pins that a server which cancels and never answers ends in
the timeout error rather than hanging. It fails against rmcp 3.2.0,
where the call ended at once with the server's cancellation.

dirs 7.0.0 only changes preference_dir on Windows, which zone never
calls; the abnegate crates already pull 7.0.0, so zone_core now takes the
workspace pin instead of repeating the version.

wait_prompt cut each history poll's request timeout to whatever was left
of the training deadline. When ComfyUI was too slow to answer the last
poll in time, reqwest's own timeout fired first and the job failed with
"error sending request for url (.../history/<id>)" instead of "training
timed out". Under load the in-flight poll is the usual place the deadline
lands, which is how a_graph_that_never_finishes_times_out failed.

Polls now keep their own five-second request timeout and the whole poll
runs under timeout_at(deadline), so whichever of the deadline or a real
request failure comes first is reported as what it is. cancel_and_wait
bounds its polls the same way.

The timeout tests now mount a ComfyUI that marks the prompt terminal once
it is cancelled, so they assert the cancellation was confirmed and no
longer spend thirty seconds polling a graph that never ends.

catalog_pages_all_references_without_exposing_result_bodies_or_other_chats
acquired a 30-second lease and never renewed it, then made several
hundred store round trips paging the catalog seven characters at a time.
It takes about a second on its own, but with every test binary sharing
one Postgres under load it took 39 seconds and the final delete_message
failed with LeaseLost.

Production never holds a lease without keep_alive (session.rs pairs every
acquire with it), so the test now does the same and also asserts the
renewal never lost the lease. What it asserts about paging, redaction,
scoping and invalidation is unchanged.

std::env::set_var and remove_var are unsound while another thread reads
the environment, and cargo test runs tests on threads. zone_core::vpn::Hold,
config's tests and the local embedding provider's test each guarded their
changes with a lock of their own, so a test could rewrite variables while
another in the same binary read them, and the SAFETY comments claimed an
exclusion none of them had.

zone_core::variables::Variables is now the one guard: it takes a single
process-wide lock, records each variable before its first change and
restores it before the lock is released. Hold keeps its constructors but
holds a Variables, and hands it out so a test can change more variables
under the same lock. Variables::install sets a value a whole test binary
shares under the same lock. Config's, vpn's, the run_command environment
test, the local embedding cache test and the chat agent and handover
suites change variables only through it.

Safe set and remove over unsafe calls must not reach production, where
worker threads read the environment without the lock, so variables and
Hold compile only for zone_core's own tests and its new test-support
feature, which zone_context and zone_server enable as dev-dependencies.

zone_search was extracted to abnegate/crates as abnegate-search, so the
local copy goes and zone_server uses the published crate. The crate stays
neutral about where SearXNG runs and starts switched off; zone keeps its
own policy in services::search: the Gluetun query URL, search on unless
SEARCH_ENABLE_WEB_SEARCH turns it off, and off while public web waits for
the VPN (zone_core::vpn::allows_public, the same gate the old crate
re-implemented). The seven VPN-gating tests move with it, changing the
environment only under the Hold they already take.

The crate reads the timeout from SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECONDS. There is no
fallback to SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECS, and the config test pins that the old
name no longer sets the timeout.

The search observer now reports a typed Outcome, recorded under its
stable label, which adds the disabled, decode_error and too_large
statuses to zone_searxng_requests_total.

Every result title, URL and snippet now passes through the crate's
sanitizer, which redacts credential-shaped text such as a presigned URL's
token before the model reads it; a web tool test pins that. The capability
text names the search tool only generically, so the chat test now asserts
that sentence and that an agent model is offered web_search.

BREAKING CHANGE: SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECS is no longer read; set
SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECONDS instead.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The manager container sees only the variables compose lists, so the
search timeout could never be set in Docker: neither the old
SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECS nor the renamed SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECONDS reached it.
Listing it beside SEARCH_RESULT_COUNT, with the same 15-second default
the server uses, makes the setting take effect there for the first time.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The renamed timeout had no entry in .env.example or CONFIGURATION.md, so
an operator had no way to find it. Both now list it next to
SEARCH_RESULT_COUNT, along with the 1-60 and 1-20 ranges the client
holds the two settings to.

zone_email built SmtpTransport::relay, implicit TLS, for every port, so
the default SMTP_PORT of 587 opened with a TLS ClientHello against a
plaintext greeting and no verification or reset mail was ever delivered.
abnegate_notify::Mailer upgrades with STARTTLS on every port but 465.
zone_notify and zone_email were zone's copies of what abnegate-notify now
publishes, so both crates go and zone_server depends on the crate with
its smtp feature (testing for its own tests).

Account mail keeps zone's wording in a new services::mail module: Template
holds the two messages and AccountMail sends them through any
abnegate_notify::Mail. mail::Config is the one reader of the SMTP_*
variables for account mail and email notices alike, with the sender
policy as the only difference, so the two can no longer drift. A value
that is blank once trimmed counts as unset: docker-compose passes every
SMTP_* variable through even when .env leaves it out, so a blank
SMTP_FROM switched account mail off instead of falling back to the
default sender, and a blank SMTP_HOST was logged as configured and then
failed every send. SMTP_PASSWORD is the exception and is taken as given,
because both readers accepted an empty one and a relay may too. An
unreadable SMTP_PORT falls back to 587 with a warning for both, as
notices already did; that delivered if the relay served 587 and failed
otherwise, which beats switching account mail off.

The auth handlers hand a message to a task of its own instead of
awaiting it. A known address was answered a full SMTP session later than
an unknown one, which told a caller which accounts exist, and a stalled
relay held the request open until lettre's timeout. The token is stored
either way, so a send that fails, is dropped because MAX_CONCURRENT_SENDS
messages are already with the relay, or is cut off by shutdown is retried
by asking again. The bound keeps the public, unthrottled endpoints from
opening an SMTP session per request. Each send is also cut off after
SEND_TIMEOUT: lettre's async transport bounds only the TCP connect, so a
relay that stalls after it would hold a permit forever, and eight such
stalls would switch account mail off until a restart.

The state the server falls back to when the embedding service will not
start now carries account mail. It used to drop it after logging that it
was configured. AppState's three constructors built the same state three
times, so they now share one assembly.

The display name is sanitised before it reaches a mail client, since it
is whatever the person typed. The link is left alone, because redaction
would eat its token.

The notification workers swap imports. Slack and Discord now get
ZONE_NOTIFY_TIMEOUT_SECONDS for their own requests, as documented, and
Discord keeps its Zone footer, which the crate leaves opt-in. The email
channel no longer needs a Tokio runtime to be built.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The SMTP entries now say which port uses which TLS mode, that a blank
value other than the password counts as unset, what an unreadable port
falls back to, and where SMTP_FROM falls back. They no longer claim
invitations send mail; they never did.

Since 6162aad the trainer venvs are created with a plain `python -m venv`,
which bootstraps pip through ensurepip even when ZONE_TRAIN_SKIP_PIP=1.
Inside the nested CI venv on ubuntu that ensurepip call fails, so
test_install_trainer_inherits_comfy_site_packages has kept ComfyUI Tests red
on main. Both venvs are now created with --without-pip, and ensurepip runs
only when a pip install follows. For the SDXL trainer it runs straight after
the venv is created and before comfy-site.pth is written, so it cannot see
Comfy's own pip through the .pth and skip installing one into the venv.

The test now also asserts that neither trainer venv gains pip when the
install is skipped, which fails on every platform without this change.

ffc910c added a module-level V1 NODE_CLASS_MAPPINGS for ZoneIPAdapterFace.
The pinned ComfyUI loader registers that dict and returns before it ever
reaches comfy_entrypoint, so every V3 node in ZoneLoraExtension stopped
loading: dataset, staging, training, the loss and gradient probes and run
cleanup. Training graphs were rejected by a real ComfyUI as well as by the
graph contract tests, which have kept ComfyUI Tests red on main since.

ZoneIPAdapterFace is now a V3 io.ComfyNode with the same node id, inputs,
defaults, ranges, category and MODEL output, and its execute body is the
old apply body unchanged. It is listed in get_node_list with the training
nodes, and the V1 dict is gone so the extension is the only entry point.

The registry test now also requires ZoneLoadTrainFolder. New tests parse
the face graph people.rs injects and validate it against the loaded
schema, check that people.rs IPADAPTER_STRENGTH lies inside the node's
strength bounds and IPADAPTER_FILE matches PLUS_FACE, and run the
zero-strength pass-through through ComfyUI's own V3 dispatch.

CodeQL's Rust sensitive-data heuristic (HeuristicNames::maybeAccountInfo)
matches any call, variable or field name containing "account". Naming the
constructor new_with_account_mail, the field, accessor and parameters
account_mail made every AppState a sensitive source, so the GitHub API URLs
built in zone_vcs::pull_request were flagged as rust/cleartext-transmission.
Nothing sensitive flows there; the state only carries the mail sender.

The heuristic does not read type names, so AccountMail keeps its name, and
"mail" alone is not matched. The test client follows: with_mail.

Every agent worktree shares one cargo build dir, which reached 89-130 GB in a
day or two. Full debuginfo in dev and test builds was a fifth of each artifact
set while backtraces only need line tables, and dependency debuginfo is never
read outside a debugger.

Measured on a clean `cargo build --workspace --exclude zone_desktop
--all-targets`, then three edits to zone_server:

  full debuginfo     155 s clean, 32 GB -> 36 GB, edit-rebuild 33-36 s
  line tables only   123 s clean, 25 GB -> 29 GB, edit-rebuild 32-36 s

Incremental stays on: turning it off for tests saved another 9 GB but doubled
the edit-rebuild to 66-70 s. CI already sets CARGO_PROFILE_{DEV,TEST}_DEBUG=0,
which still wins over the manifest, and the release profile is unchanged.

Route grew past 856 bytes, so every Routing value carried it and clippy's
large_enum_variant has failed the lint job on main since 2026-10-05.

Binding port 0 and dropping the listener frees that port, and with nextest
running tests in parallel another test's mock server took it: the upscale
test got a 404 from wiremock instead of a refused connection. A privileged
port is never handed out by bind(0), so 127.0.0.1:1 is refused every time.
Holding the port bound without listening was not an option, because macOS
drops the SYN and the connection times out instead.

A status read listed the organization's logins, refreshed their usage, and
only then looked for the sign-in in flight. A sign-in that ended in between
recorded its login and dropped its attempt, so the read found neither and
reported signed out. CI caught it as a flaky agent_login_tests run.

A sign-in records its login before it drops its attempt, so reading the
attempt first means a read that finds no attempt finds the login.

Main boxed Routing::Chat's route the same way and unboxes it at the
prepare_chat call, so the merge unboxed it twice and the server stopped
compiling. Keep main's version.

Walkthrough

The pull request replaces local server email, notification, and search crates with shared crates and server-owned services. It also updates ComfyUI nodes, timeout handling, environment test support, frontend E2E tests, and development setup.

Changes

Server mail, search, and notification services

Layer / File(s) Summary
Replace local service crates
runner/Cargo.toml, runner/zone_email/*, runner/zone_notify/*, runner/zone_search/*, runner/zone_server/Cargo.toml, README.md, docs/DEPLOY.md, docs/SYSTEM-PROMPT-RESEARCH.md
The workspace removes zone_email, zone_notify, and zone_search. Server dependencies and references use abnegate-notify and abnegate-search.
Configure and wire web search
runner/zone_server/src/services/search.rs, runner/zone_server/src/config.rs, runner/zone_server/src/agent/web.rs, runner/zone_server/src/metrics.rs, runner/zone_server/src/{services/chat,ws}/*, runner/zone_server/tests/integration/*, .env.example, docker-compose*.yml, docs/CONFIGURATION.md
The server adds zone-specific search defaults and environment handling. Search consumers use shared search types. SEARCH_TIMEOUT_SECONDS is configured with a default of 15 seconds; tests check environment parsing, metrics outcomes, and credential redaction in search output.
Add account mail service and routes
runner/zone_server/src/services/mail/*, runner/zone_server/src/state.rs, runner/zone_server/src/main.rs, runner/zone_server/src/routes/auth.rs, runner/zone_server/tests/integration/{common,auth_console_contract}.rs, docs/DEPLOY.md, .env.example, docs/CONFIGURATION.md
The server adds SMTP configuration, verification and password-reset templates, and an AccountMail dispatcher with a concurrency limit and send timeout. Startup and application state provide the optional service to authentication routes.
Wire shared notification delivery
runner/zone_server/src/workers/*
Notification workers import the shared notification APIs. The notification worker uses the mail configuration service to build email relays and applies configured webhook timeouts.

Shared environment test support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add shared environment guard and migrate tests
runner/zone_core/src/{variables,vpn}.rs, runner/zone_core/{Cargo.toml,src/lib.rs}, runner/zone_context/Cargo.toml, runner/zone_context/src/embeddings/providers/local.rs, runner/zone_core/src/tools/command.rs, runner/zone_server/src/config.rs, runner/zone_server/tests/integration/{chat_agent,chat_handover}.rs
Variables serializes environment changes and restores saved values when its guard drops. Existing tests use it for environment setup, including VPN test support and configuration tests.

ComfyUI face node migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migrate face node schema and execution
comfyui/custom_nodes/zone_lora/{__init__.py,face_node.py}, comfyui/tests/test_graph_contract.py
ZoneIPAdapterFace now uses the ComfyUI node schema and execution API. Tests validate its Rust graph against the pinned registry and check input links, constants, and zero-strength behavior.

ComfyUI training deadline handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound history polling and cancel timed-out prompts
runner/zone_comfy/src/train.rs
History polling is bounded by the training deadline. Timeout and history errors trigger prompt cancellation, and tests check cleanup after timeout and delayed responses.

Frontend E2E request and context checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update context-meter assertions
manager/frontend/e2e/chats-context.e2e.ts
Context tests check token counts instead of percentages. They also check Sources-button keyboard focus and retained counts after interrupted responses and reloads.
Handle multipart model requests in E2E mocks
manager/frontend/e2e/models.e2e.ts, manager/frontend/e2e/screenshots.e2e.ts
Model E2E helpers parse JSON and multipart requests, stage uploaded images by ID, and reconstruct training and caption requests. Tests account for WebKit’s missing multipart file bytes and match training URLs with query strings.

Runtime and development test updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add MCP timeout and sanitization coverage
runner/zone_core/src/{mcp/client.rs,tools/*}
Tests cover an MCP tool call that receives cancellation without a response and tool output that removes invisible characters. Tool results now use abnegate_secret sanitization.
Adjust integration test timing and fixtures
runner/zone_server/src/services/login/status.rs, runner/zone_server/tests/integration/*
Login status reads pending sign-in state before loading login rows. Integration tests add a login/status overlap case, keep a catalog lease alive during pagination, and use a shared refused URL for connection-failure checks.
Update development build and training setup
runner/Cargo.toml, runner/README.md, scripts/setup-comfyui-macos.sh, comfyui/tests/test_setup_macos.py
Development builds use line-table-only debug information for workspace crates and disable dependency debug information. The macOS setup script creates training environments without pip and bootstraps pip when installation is enabled.

Files read by the agent no longer show some invisible characters that are still in the file, such as the joiners used in Persian text and emoji. Edits based on that text can then fail to apply. Settle whether file reads should keep their exact text before merging. The remaining concerns affect test reliability and test coverage only.

…meter

Main's e2e suite has failed since the train flow started staging images
through /api/models/train/uploads and posting the job as multipart with
a workspace query: the mocks parsed the upload POST as JSON, and the
'**/api/models/train' glob no longer matched the job POST, so every
result fixture was bypassed. The mocks now stage uploads per page, read
captions and jobs as multipart, and match the job URL with its query.

The context meter shows used / total instead of a percentage since
438b12b, keeps the last observation when a socket drops, and the
attached-sources chip now sits between the draft and the meter in tab
order (6b13143); the chats-context assertions follow all three.

WebKit reports a multipart body without its files' bytes, so the two
upload-content checks compare filenames and captions there.

Validate the Rust model links instead of replacing one.

rust_face_graph assigns ['4', 0] to the face node without reading the Rust model input. It also omits the Rust code that links the sampler to the face node. If inject_ipadapter stops rewiring the sampler, test_rust_face_graph_matches_the_pinned_registry still passes, although the adapter no longer affects that workflow. Extract or exercise the actual links and assert both the face input and sampler output link. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve exact file text in read_file results.

When a file contains a zero-width non-joiner, sanitize_owned removes that character from the returned text. The new test in runner/zone_core/src/tools/file.rs, Line 1198, confirms that the file still contains it. A subsequent apply_patch using text copied from that result can fail to match the file. Keep file content intact, or escape these characters visibly instead of deleting them.

Update the read_file result handling that uses sanitize_owned so zero-width
non-joiners are preserved in returned file text, either by keeping the content
intact or representing those characters visibly; ensure text copied from the
result can still match the file in apply_patch.

Leaving this for a human decision rather than changing it here. #110 drops these characters on purpose: an invisible character between two halves of a credential gets past redaction, and the read_file test documents the cost. The alternatives each give something up. Exempting read_file output from invisible-character stripping reopens the split-credential gap for file contents. Escaping them visibly changes the text, so a patch still wouldn't match. Making apply_patch ignore those characters when it matches keeps both properties but is a bigger change. Flagged to the PR owner.

@abnegate Thanks for the guidance. Removing invisible characters before redaction closes the split-credential gap. My suggestion to escape those characters would not restore exact matching in apply_patch.

The patch-matching limitation remains, but the fix needs a security-aware design decision. I’ll leave this finding open for the PR owner’s decision, without requesting a change here.

Learning: In the Rust tool pipeline in runner/zone_core/src/tools/mod.rs, abnegate_secret::sanitize_owned intentionally removes invisible characters before credential redaction to prevent split credentials from bypassing redaction. This also affects read_file output from runner/zone_core/src/tools/file.rs; the read_file test documents that sanitized output can differ from unchanged source text. Exempting file output from stripping reopens the redaction gap, and visible escaping alone does not restore exact apply_patch matching. Treat this as a security-versus-text-fidelity trade-off, not an accidental sanitization regression.

… mock

The console stages training images at /api/models/train/uploads before it
posts the job, and the screenshot test never mocked that endpoint, so the
run never reached the job request it was waiting on and Visual Regression
timed out on main as well as here.

The backfill test ran the historical migration across the whole shared
database. Under plain cargo test (Code Coverage) every integration test
shares one process, and a parallel test's backfill seated an owner in a
workspace this test had just stripped, so it read "owner" where it
expected "admin". Each run now passes its workspace, and a new test
fails if a backfill reaches any other.

…ettled

A finished sign-in dropped its attempt before auditing the login, while
its staging directory lived on in the completion task until the audit
write returned, and an unrecorded one dropped it before saying why. A
status read in between saw a sign-in no longer pending with its staging
directory still on disk, or with no failure to show; CI caught the first
in agent_login. The attempt now goes last, after the staging directory
and the failure, so "not pending" means the outcome is in place.
